I paid $100, worked with my mechanic, and returned February 26th. That's when Pedro informed me my check engine light would prevent a legal pass -- then suggested that for an additional fee, it could be handled. I did not solicit this. He approached me. The vehicle passed. When I went to start my truck it wouldn't turn over. It never made it off their lot under its own power. Staff ignored me, then mocked me openly in front of other customers and staff for a solid hour -- the most hostile I've been made to feel in 40 years as a paying customer, and I've worked as an executive chef and a USCG Licensed Captain. I know what hostile male environments look like. Eventually they pushed my truck into the street. My mechanic diagnosed a failed fuel pump -- something any legitimate inspection would have caught. I filed a BAR complaint. My BAR representative contacted Pedro directly, at which point Pedro became verbally abusive with a state employee and refused the refund he'd previously agreed to. I have since filed a complaint with the California Attorney General. Scrolling through the 1-star reviews here, I am apparently not alone. The pattern speaks for itself.

Well I found the most iconic smog shop in Santa Barbara. What a gem...not only is this place named after the city we live in but it is a shop filled with some really cool model cars, old bicycles, go carts, license plates and many other trinkets to gaze at while your waiting. We had been to Casey's prior for a smog check and were very pleased with his service. So I had the Sonata sent to his shop. The diagnosis was a seized engine! (Imaging having your daughter's transportation miles away and getting told that it needs a complete engine replacement?) Casey had previously worked on a similar situation. He knew that certain Hyundai cars had been recalled for this same issue. He placed a call to Oxnard Hyundai and found out that my vehicle was covered by the recall. They came and got the car and are replacing the engine completely free of charge including the towing charges! Can you believe that! If you are a parent with kids going to school nearby Santa Barbara. Or just in need of an honest mechanic and live near Goleta, Casey's Garage is impeccably honest. It was incredibly fast otherwise I'd leave 1 star as the price was literally double what the place down the street from my house charges. A quick online search revealed every shop in town was in the $39-49 range, but at Casey's I was charged $79.95. I couldn't find a price listed for smog checks at Casey's Garage online or in the shop, but I highly recommend steering clear of this establishment if you value your hard earned money.

Enrique could have taken me to the cleaners given the situation, but chose to help me out as much as possible instead. Throughout the process Enrique instilled confidence in his workmanship and desire to get me out of a tough spot. I just got the car back and have driven it 60 miles and it's running much better than ever before breaking down. I hope I never need a mechanic in Santa Barbara, but if I do, I know where I'm going.

For now, 3 Stars. What had HAPPENED was…read more.. I noticed when every time I'd bust a right turn, my stirring wheel would break out into loud rubbery squeals. WTF? What are you doing!? Huhhhhh...I take no chances. I found the first shop close by on Yelp, and Lara's was it...just around the corner off E Gutierrez. I told the guys my problem, but had to move my car off to the side and wait to be seen. This place shares a small enclosed space on Gutierrez with a few other businesses and there isn't really much room for several customers at a time, but they make it work. A dude comes and looks at my car and tells me what he thinks it sounds like (my suspicions were correct) but proposed replacing the whole part when I was told by another mechanic LATER that I didn't need the whole part replaced...just oiled/lubed. Hmmmmm...suspicious. Nonetheless, he did reassure me that everything looked fine for my trip. Nothing seemed dire or urgent, and at least THAT put my mind at ease. Thank you for that cause I get carried away with worry sometimes. Thank you for taking time to listen to me, look at the problem and answer any questions. If you have a mechanic that you absolutely trust, keep them as your plan A. However this place could be an OK plan B. I'd cross check what this place tells you with your trusted mechanic, though. Make sure it sounds ballpark.
