    Date Night selections!
    Doug G.

I learned about Fermented through an event last year and was super pumped to stop in to actually check the place out. Located in downtown Alpharetta, Fermented is a small specialty wine shop that focuses on locally sourced wines of all varieties and price points. To help you with making the best selection they have the selections grouped by the occasion you need it for from Date Night to Special Occasion to the Party wall, which features the cheapest bottles that will still supply you with the fun, but won't break the bank. However, if you are looking for a super fancy bottle, they have the Collectors nook in the back that feature bottles well above the $100 price point. Service was phenomenal as well. I was greeted immediately when I entered and as we chatted, she was patient and very helpful, especially since if it doesn't come from the bottom shelf at Kroger or features a twist top...I don't know about it! She took time to educate me, walk me around to show me what wines fall in what categories and to tell me about the offerings of classes and tastings that they have on site! If you decided to pop your bottle while there, they do offer that and then you can step right outside to enjoy at one of the tables lining the walkway. Overall, Fermented is a cool shop that I will certainly visit again!

We stumbled upon Fermented (Canton location) and it was the highlight of our Saturday. It is located inside the Mill at Etowah, where there are multiple shops and restaurants. The staff was so friendly and helpful. My husband and I shared a flight (the hayride reds) and a glass while we jammed to some Taylor swift (wine + taytay = best combo!) We will definitely be checking out the Alpharetta location and return to this one!

A must try when in Alpharetta. We come here for the tastings. We try and find new tastes and take a few bottles home. The knowledge of the staff is over the top. The owner Adam is always searching for the winery that brings the best flavors. Just a great place to hang out with one or a large group!

Fermented is a local wine shop right in the heart of Downtown Alpharetta. You probably won't find your Yellowtails or Barefoot wines here. They specialize in small, mom and pop vineyards. It's a small shop, but they curated a ton of good wines. Each section of the wall is categorized. When you enter, to your left you find your budget wines. To your right, you find your "Special occasion" wines. At the back, you find your collector's wines, where the wines go $100++. And in the front, near the windows, you have your dessert wines and half bottles. The people here are quite knowledgeable and friendly. If you need to find a wine for an occasion or meal, they can help you out. They also do $10-$25 wine tastings on Tues, Thurs, and on the weekends. They feature 4+ wines with some small bites. They even have spit buckets so you don't get trashed (or you can spit them out if you didn't like the wine. They won't get offended). But it's a wine tasting, why not get drunk with the sweet nectar? Whether you're a complete noob or an experienced wino, you can come here for some good wines.

Gorgeous place with clean, simple decor!

Wow! What a gorgeous addition to the growing downtown Alpharetta scene! This sweet little boutique wine shop, nestled in downtown Alpharetta is definitely going to be my wine stop from now on. Supporting local businesses and supporting our local economy is what our great nation was founded on, right? These people are great! A partnership of some awesome local residents run this place and it's obvious that it has been a labor of love. SUPER Knowledgeable staff (that don't make you feel stupid about not knowing everything there is to know about wine) is balanced with sensible and simple decor that brings attention to each bottle of wine they are presenting. Each bottle of wine is carefully selected and are all so unique! If you're a true wino... you'll be in love! If you're just starting to learn about wine, you'll have so much fun here! Or... if you're like me and just know what kind of wine you like and just look for that one wine you can drink with everything... you'll find it here too! I'm so excited this place is here! They have a cool wine club too! Check it out!

Enjoy some meat and cheese at the halfway mark of your wine tasting. Don't mind if I do...

It has been my experience that few bottles that go under $40 are worth my time. I was wrong. Amy, owner of TOTT, shared with me 4 wines that ran $15-$20 that I actually truly enjoyed. Her selections are impressive, small batch bottles, 5,000 in existence or less from around the world. She also has a strong meat and cheese selection and an adorable dog to boot. I will be back!

I didn't know what it was, until some friends of mine booked a wine tasting for us. What? I love wine tastings, and thought I had to drive to Dahlonegha for that. No idea there was a place so close by to do wine like this. We walked in and were walked back to a quaint room with a long table and chairs around it. A reservation had been made for the wine tasting, so the four of us were seated with some other people that had made the reservation as well. Amy, the owner, came in and introduced herself. She was so knowledgable about wines, and really was informative. I have to say I've been to several wine tastings before, but I learned a lot here from Amy. She told us about herself, and what her store is all about. She stated she has about 300 wines in her shop, and she has tasted every single one. She stated that she got a lot of her wines from small producers, and that most of her wines were under $20. She said she liked to have a unique variety of wines that would be good to grab for a dinner at home, or for a gift. She also had several imported and domestic cheeses. We had the opportunity to try a few different cheeses, and by far my favorite was the brie/gouda mix Belletoile. It was so good and creamy. The crackers that were served with the cheeses were so good as well. We had a peppercorn and a plain cracker. Both were really good, and I loved the small sizes of the crackers to go with the cheese. They were made from a small company in Chamblee called Georgia Sourdough. You can buy their crackers at this store, so you don't have to drive to Chamblee. So the wine tastings are Monday-Saturday. Drop-in tastings are Monday through Wednesday for $10, which includes four wines and one cheese with cracker. Thursday through Saturday, Amy does a six wine tasting paired with 3 different cheeses and crackers for $18 per person. The latter requires a reservation. Each tasting has a theme, so for instance, the one we did was USA Wines. And I tried my first Riesling I actually didn't mind. It wasn't sweet. She mentioned that before I tried it, and she was right. You also get to keep the BPA plastic stemless glass you use to do the tastings. She chose these BPA glasses, because there is no odor like with most plastics and doesn't have that plastic taste, either. The glasses are very sensitive to heat, though, so don't put them in your dishwasher or they will melt. She serves the wines from lightest to heaviest, and she told us if you rinse the glass each time with water between tastings you will change the way the next wine should taste. She said going from lightest to heaviest will nix the need to actually rinse the glass. If you like any of the wines or cheeses you try the day of the tasting, you can get any of them for 10% off. And she won't tell you the prices of the wines until after the tasting, which was a good idea. She didn't want us having preconceived ideas on the taste based on knowledge of the price. Unfortunately, I picked the most expensive wine as my favorite. I wouldn't pay $27 for a wine for any regular evening, but it's a good choice for the weekend or entertaining. I'd love to come back here, sooner than later. I am so excited my friends discovered this place, and will definitely be back. If you live in the area, check it out.

Salud! Cooking School is a chain of cooking schools located inside certain Whole Foods Markets. At…read morethe time of writing this review, there are two in the Atlanta area: this location at the Whole Foods at Avalon in Alpharetta and another in Duluth/Johns Creek. I've taken classes at both locations. There are also locations in Charlotte, Memphis, and Nashville. For a friend's birthday, my friends and I participated in the class entitled "Divine Doughnuts with Dutch Monkey" on March 11, 2018. This was a doughnut-making class conducted by chefs Arpana Satyu-Burge and Martin Burge, the founders and owners of acclaimed Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming. I enjoyed the class, but it was not what I expected. At the class I participated in at Salud! in Duluth/Johns Creek, we rolled sushi: https://www.yelp.com/biz/yelps-fit-club-cmye-whole-foods-tour-sushi-making-class-duluth. Each person had a seat with their own individually portioned set of ingredients. In general, we followed, step-by-step, as the instructors in the demonstration kitchen walked us through all that was entailed in making a sushi roll, from prepping the ingredients to assembling the roll. It was very interactive and hands-on. The doughnut class was different. While it was advertised as a "hands-on" experience, the interactivity was limited to some students taking turns doing a different task in the demonstration kitchen. Therefore, this was more of a demonstration class than a hands-on class. Examples of hands-on tasks included mixing various ingredients in bowls, rolling dough, and hand-cutting doughnuts out of the dough. Most of the class time was spent watching chefs Arpana and Martin cook in the demonstration kitchen. I know a lot of cooking classes are set up in this style, sort of like watching a cooking show on Food Network or Cooking Channel, but I was expecting to be making my own doughnuts. The class cost $55 per person and lasted a little over 2.5 hours. The official class time was 2pm to 5pm. When you sign up for a class at Salud!, you must book and pay online in advance. On the day of the class, you should show up a few minutes early and check in at the Whole Foods customer service desk at the front of the store. After entering the store, the cooking class is located in the back-left, up the stairs. We were each handed a class lecture packet, a pen to take notes, an apron, and name tags. There was bottled water and snacks. The snacks included chips and dip (guacamole), a couple cheeses (e.g. brie), grapes, nuts, crackers, and toast. The class lecture packet included recipes for 2 doughnuts chefs Arpana and Martin showed us how to make: (1) cardamom cake doughnuts with apricot sabayon and (2) buttermilk cake doughnuts with lemon curd and vanilla meringue. We watched as chefs Arpana and Martin made each of the following components from scratch: buttermilk cake doughnuts, apricot sabayon, lemon curd, vanilla meringue, and almond croquant. There were only 13 students, the 2 chefs/instructors, 1 person who worked for Salud!/Whole Foods, and 4 Salud! volunteers. That meant the student to instructor/employee/volunteer ratio was very high (13:7). This was a fairly casual and intimate experience. We huddled around the demonstration kitchen, watched, listened, and asked questions. Both Arpana and Martin are soft-spoken so there were a few times when some of us could not hear what they were saying. In this case, a microphone-speaker setup might have been nice. The classroom is outfitted with video cameras and displays, but they were not in use for this class. When I took the sushi-making at Salud! in Duluth/Johns Creek, they used the cameras and displays to make it easier for the students to see ingredient prep, etc. For this doughnut-making class, I think the cameras would have been useful for several of the mixing bowls since the insides of the bowls were hard for some of us to see. After about 2 hours, the freshly-made doughnuts were ready for us to eat. They looked and tasted absolutely magnificent. These were gourmet doughnuts to a tee. Rich, luscious, and decadent. It was easy to see why Arpana and Martin have become successful. Martin finished off the lemon curd and vanilla meringue doughnuts with some blowtorch action. Arpana plated the cardamom cake doughnuts with apricot sabayon perfectly. (I think my pictures speak for themselves.) Whole Foods Allegro Coffee was served with our doughnuts. I believe normally up to 2 glasses of wine per student are served per class, but coffee pairs better with doughnuts. Thank you to chefs Arpana and Martin for conducting the class, to Shannon Marsh, Whole Foods' cooking school administrator, for organizing everything, and to the volunteers for their help. Everyone was nice. If you're interested in taking a cooking class at Salud!, be sure to sign up early because classes fill up fast. Also, grab a loyalty card. If you purchase 7 classes and you get an 8th class for free.

So when the opportunity to enroll in the "Divine Doughnuts with Dutch Monkey" cooking class came up as a possible way to celebrate a fellow foodie friend's birthday as a group, I agreed it was a great idea and signed up online. Since I had heard great things about Dutch Monkey Doughnuts, located all the way up in Cumming, I thought this "cooking class" would be the perfect opportunity to both learn how to make amazing doughnuts at home AND try their famous doughnuts! The class was advertised as "Hands-on" and cost $55 for a 3-hour session (actually ended up being 2.5 hours). I thought this was a steep price for a doughnut-making class (as opposed to a cooking class for a meal that would include wine), but I had incorrectly assumed that each student would be making a batch of their own doughnuts and could take some home at the end. I had never taken a cooking class at Salud Cooking School before, so I really didn't know what to expect, but I did think that I'd be making my own doughnuts. Led by Chefs Martin Burge and Arpana Satyu-Burge, married couple and owners of Dutch Monkey Doughnuts, the class size was limited to 12 students (and quickly sold out online). However, my friends appreciated that management was kind enough to allow one of our friends, a 13th student, enroll and join our class at the last minute. Upon checking in a few minutes before the class start time - 2 pm - I received a stapled packet that included recipes for the two doughnuts that would be made during this class: Cardamom Cake with Apricot Sabayon and Buttermilk Cake with Lemon Curd and Vanilla Meringue. When I made it upstairs to the classroom, I received a name tag, an apron, and a pen to jot down notes in my class packet. I also noticed there were bottled waters, coffee, and a spread of healthy snacks from Whole Foods available for students to munch on - tortilla chips, guacamole, crackers, cheese, and fruit. I appreciated this in lieu of the two glasses of wine that students at meal-cooking classes receive. After putting on my apron, my fellow students and I huddled around Chefs Martin and Arpana as they began prepping the dough for the doughnuts. I noticed they asked for student "volunteers" to help prep the dough and doughnut toppings, and I kept waiting for the part of the class where all students would have the opportunity to watch and follow along as the instructors completed each detailed step. This never happened. The entire class ended up being more of a demonstration than the hands-on learning experience that I had expected. Being short in stature, I had a hard time seeing a lot of what was going on - especially when something was being mixed in a bowl or cooked on the stove. I'm not sure why, but the instructors didn't use microphones or utilize the TV screens (connected to video cameras) installed in the classroom that would allow everyone to easily see what was going on in the kitchen. At the end, when the chefs were done making the doughnuts, each student received two beautiful, Instagram-worthy doughnuts: one Cardamom Cake and one Buttermilk Cake. The Cardamom Cake doughnut with Apricot Sabayon was honestly the best doughnut I had ever had in my life! The Buttermilk Cake with Lemon Curd and Vanilla Meringue was also delicious and came in at a close second best doughnut I've tasted. When the class was over, students were neither offered seconds nor the leftovers of the few dozen doughnuts that were made. It turned out this was because the volunteer assistants, the four of whom did not appear to do much during the class, were expected to take them (as a reward for volunteering). Personally, I didn't finish my second doughnut (we were about to go to dinner), so I asked if there was a small to-go box I could put it in to take home. Apparently, it isn't a common practice to take leftovers from Salud cooking classes home since no containers were available. Fortunately, one of the volunteers found some Ziploc bags, and I took my half-eaten doughnut in one. I really wish that this class had been advertised as a "Demonstration" and not "Hands-on," and I felt that the price should have been lower as a result. We literally received two doughnuts and didn't experience the doughnut-making process unless we had "volunteered" to do things in front of the class - and I'm not the type to be put on the spot in a group setting. Overall, based on my experience with this particular class, Salud Cooking School gets 3.5 stars. I really would have preferred for each student to make their own batch of doughnuts, or - at the very least - decorate their own doughnuts. I'm glad the doughnuts were delicious, and I definitely plan to make the trek to visit Chefs Martin and Arpana at Dutch Monkey Doughnuts for more of their amazing doughnuts!

Coming inside it's a lot bigger than what you would expect. They have a wall of wine, as they should, they have a back room where they do tastings, and not like four tables that are set up. They have like tastings and cooking lessons as well so there's tables and stoves and all sorts of things. They have a full kitchen with a kitchen menu that I hear. The fool was pretty good. I actually didn't try the food on the first time around because I just eaten and I just wanted to stop And to see what it was about because it's been on my list. When I went I sat at the bar and the bartender (Tay) took care of me. She was super cool and we had a good conversation. The bar has liquor there so it's not only wine. They have a very limited selection of liquor but there is liquor there. They have a cocktail menu, again. It's kind of limited, but they can pretty much make whatever you need. But the show the spotlight is going to be on the wine selections. Wish they had plenty of them. I was picking out a wine to try and she definitely helped and gave good advice and led me in a good direction. She was awesome. Now they have a wine club. This wine club is pretty good, so I may consider trying it. I'm already part of wine club elsewhere, but this one might be a little bit different. For the wine club you pay a price and you get about four bottles of wine, but you also get to do all of the tastings as well. You get the good a membership discount if you bring people in to dine-in as well. There's a lot that goes into it. There should be a picture of it in my review so check that out. Oddly enough, they also have trips that they go on for people who want to visit different wine venues. It's really surprising because that isn't a small thing to take group trips to some random part to sample wine. But if you're a wine drinker, and you have the the money to spend, this would be cool to be around like-minded people. They really have a lot to offer! I thought it was a really good random walk-in for me, I enjoyed it. The atmosphere was good, the selections were really good, the customer service was really good, it was great on all parts.

Goodson Dark Chocolate Covered Pecans - again with the light pecan crunch. I love dark chocolate - this chocolate was not bitter or too sweet. I really enjoyed these. I wish that I had bought many bags. 3. Spottes Trotter's Spanish Salchichon - I rarely eat salami so this was a risky choice for me. It was surprisingly flavorful and not salty. Again, I opened these to share with family just in case I couldn't eat them - they were devoured. I know that they were bought with the idea of cheese pairing but I put mine in the midst of a cream cheese bagel and loved it. My only regret is probably not buying more. 4. Beehive Cheese Barely Buzzed - This cheese is rubbed with expresso and lavender. I was intrigued. It was recommended for coffee lovers and pairing with berries. Who can resist trying an award winning cheese? At my first coffee opportunity, I sampled a few slices. Delicious. Reminds me of aged cheddar with a subtle flavor...I don't know it came across as basil. Lol. I can't wait to try it with fresh berries. The final selections haven't been tried as of this writing: 5. Thomasville Tomme Raw Cows Milk Cheese. 6. Kenny's Farmhouse Gouda I've always enjoy a good raw milk cheese and a good gouda. I'm looking forward to making something delicious with them. Thus far, my only regret is buying only 1 of each of my choices. I do hope to visit again post covid to enjoy a full in person experience at a tasting/hosted event.

Before I tell you about the charcuterie Mary made for me, I have to tell you what a sweet lady she…read moreis. A real delight to work with her -- and with a name like Cheese & Mary, you have to appreciate her wit and humor. My first time trying a charcuterie here was getting in on a Valentine's special that we enjoyed as part of our anniversary celebration. It was artfully arranged and contained a mixture of sweet, savory, and hearty bites. Some of the things on the plate, I thought, this is an odd pairing, but when I ate it together, it was really good! She knows what she's doing. I'm a little sad the shop is going to close because it's really charming, but I'm okay with it since she's going to be running a virtual store and taking orders still.
