A local friend introduced us to the Faye's Cafe experience. The cafe is located in an old school. Once inside, first thing was to sign in and wait our turn to be seated. We were seated in a classroom reminiscent of my 1960's grade school days. Seating is limited and meals seem to take some time, but that's because careful thought is put in to each plate. Eating my order was like opening a present. There was a wonderful sampling of bacon, sausage, toast with jelly, and potatoes with cheese. And then the delightful slicelets of banana, carrot, orange, cucumber, and either peach or nectarine. Husband enjoyed his eggs benny and friend savored her Faye's special with a benny spin. Fays is a lovely little resturant in the Montana town of Livingston. Now if you want to go to flavortown and I mean right down there on main street Flavortown, then go check out Faye's. She is just as sweet as her cinnamon rolls. Which, by the way are absolutely fabulous. They are about half the size of most restaurants, which is fine with me as I love me some cinnamon rolls just not that big. Perfect size Faye. I ordered the or huevos rancheros and man what an awesome breakfast. Not exactly like your typical huevos rancheros, but i honestly have to rank them in the top three I've ever had. Three eggs, sausage, cheese, greens, with tabouli (sure i missed a couple things lol). When blended together, oh man it was an explosion of flavor. The coffee was most excellent Garth. Had 3 cups. I'm running the streets of Livingston as I type. Oh man what a great breakfast spot. Faye sells her own personal cookbook for $50 which we were excited to buy plus having Faye sign for us was a treat. Faye has been a chief her entire life. She tweeks old family recipes used by her grandmother as well as new creations. You know when grandma's recipes are involved, it's going to be good. Shes cooked privately for some of most prominent citizens in Big Sky as well as The Yellowstone Club, so the girl knows how to prepare a flavourful dish. I know I'll be back. There is a typical list of standard dishes and even a few of the locals' favorites, but the other side is the secret sauce. It's a picture of a sunrise. The horizon below is peppered with words referring to tastes and feelings. You select from these words, and your dish is created. I selected sweet,savory, meaty, and spicy. There are cool things in Montana, Faye's one of them. We were departing the Yellowstone area headed to Bozeman and wanted a good breakfast enroute. I found this on "the Google". We journeyed into Livingston, which from my estimations was a train town of the old west. Faye's is located in an old school now repurposed. Right off, a very different way to order. Not your usual menu, but much like being a gringo looking at a hispanic menu of 2 hundred choices you can't pronounce, pictures make a world of difference. Our server was good at explaining the concept. The wall decorations are very artsy. Lots of color and happy vibes. The kitchen is open and small. The check-out is right there too. The whole operation is cool and efficient. I ordered an omelet that was enchilada-like. Multiple meats and cheese, with hash brown potatoes. I held the rice and beans part watching carbs as best as I can muster on vacation, but you bend in places. I used the huckleberry hot sauce. Wow that was good. Never had huckleberry until this trip to mountain country. Dig it. My partner ordered a cinnamon roll, then the ham and hash browns with toast. The cinnamon roll was bonkers. Suggestion - make them bigger! Flaky and tender, with a decadent icing. I had one small bite, but it was fantastic and the other side of the table concurred. Now, this is not inexpensive fare, but the quality of product was top notch. The folks working are serious about quality. Modern vibe, in a very nicely redone old school. Easy parking, easy in and out. This was a a great travel breakfast. read more

So we were waiting...& finally a very rude female came out to announce....."we don't take parties over 8"!!! Not...."hey....we can't seat you all together, would you be willing to separate?" Whenever I drive the I-90 corridor through Montana I time my travel so to be able to eat breakfast at Faye's. I've been doing this for years. This morning I started driving at 5 a.m. in order to get there before it closed. And my reward is the amazing fresh food, the comfortable atmosphere, and the friendliness of every one who works there. You know, last time I wrote my review I was in a rush. So I don't feel like I really did this place justice. And I still think about Faye's Cafe, wishing I could have it here at home in Minneapolis, dreaming of my steaming morning coffee next to an open window at this Montana cafe in the summer........ ....... ...and I feel guilty for not saying more. So here I am, trying to redeem myself. When we came in there was a wait. Don't worry, just add your name to the list and someone will come call you before you know it. Scurry on over and they'll give you a table. If you're lucky, you'll get one by the window like we did. Then comes the first fun part. Order your drink or whatever and then look at the Menu. The menu is so fun because you have no idea what you're going to get. You just pick a vibe and this magical woman, Chef Sarah, creates the best food you've ever eaten. God I just can't even. I hope she knows I literally think about this all the time even months later. Then the best part is when the food arrives. You know when you are really hungry so you look at the servers to see, is that my food..? Is it coming? Is that one for me? Well at this place you never know until it's time. Just like life. Well when our server set the food down I melted into the floor it looked so good. The eggs were like.....heaven on a plate. I don't know what kind of trickery is going on in that kitchen but i've never tasted anything like it. This place is an experience that I could never fit into a Yelp review. Gosh, where to start. Such a cool vibe that's inclusive and relaxing. Mismatched coffee mugs and linen napkins. The menu was vast and unique. Wow wow wow!!! Faye's is a breakfast dream. It's easy to see why it can only be open 2 hours a day for 6 days a week and thrive. What a fun and eclectic place with artistic details woven into every element of your dining experience mixed with simply pleasures. You'll walk into the Shane Center (old school turned performing arts Mecca in Livingston), write your own name and party size on a notepad and when your table is ready you'll be seated by a waitress. As you walk inside you'll pass Sarah Faye, working her magic solo in the kitchen, and see the specials board for the day and a display of fun locally made jewelry and knives on the counter top. You'll be seated and greeted next to local artwork with a colorful rainbow menu which you can pick anything off of that catches your eye. Your meal will be prepped to keep you always in the $15-$18 range (there are no prices) even with your drink. I recommend the huckleberry bacon and the poppyseed sour cream sweet potatoes for sides and talking to your waitress about what you like/don't to get her recommendations. When it doubt, there's always "Faye's choice." The best part is the menu is broad so you can go back and try something new every time! So this place was recommended by a local as something unique where locals hang out. Do plan to go early because they stop serving after 80 customers. Now here's the thing - this is totally my vibe - you can give the server general guidelines and let the chef surprise you. You can use words like meaty, savory, cheesy, colorful and see what you can get. Which is a concept totally foreign to the Hubbs (remember Meg Ryan in "When Harry met Sally"?). He does not do well with surprises. They have daily specials and I could not miss the Huckleberry Bacon Eggs Benedict with Seasonal Veggies and Cheesy Grits"! The servers were very patient with the Hubbs. He had a variation with steak and Cheesy potatoes. We decided to try a cinnamon roll, which is more of a knot with amazing glaze. We got two more to go for tomorrow's breakfast. I'm guessing the Hubbs still wouldn't give them 5 full stars, but they earned it from me! A few things to know if you're driving through and feel like stopping in... 1) they only serve 60ppl a day so get there early! 2) being adventurous is a good trait to have because you never know what you'll get (I'll explain... it's a good thing). It's inside a big building and is decorated with eclectic art and decor which was cute. They have a piece of paper you jot your name & # of people in your party. I was traveling alone and this seemed to be a bad thing which I'll get to. I was told I the "last" person of the day they'd take and was thrilled! Yet as I stood waiting to be seated, a rude couple walked in & the woman said they were closed and they got upset. So they let them in. I was seated and handed a strange menu that doesn't really have items on it, just descriptive words, and I said I've never been here before. The waitress asked if I wanted coffee (I said yes) and said she'd be back to explain. I waited over 15min while she went over to the rude couple and explained to them first and took their order before I even got my coffee. Then I got coffee with cream and no sugar to go with it. So again I sat for 5 or so minutes before she came back over to explain the menu, not being able to drink my coffee. She said you pick a few words that stick out to you (ex: creamy, meaty, amazeballs, extra smiles, etc) and the chef does her thing with it. They did have specials and a few set things so if you were too afraid to try something off the cuff you could. I got the Faye's choice Benedict with a side of "cheesy grits", and asked for sugar... that she got right away. Another man, a local/regular, came strolling in and they sat him, even though they had turned several others away at this point. Interesting. Once my food came there was no explanation as to what exactly was in it so that's where your adventurous side needs to kick in. The "grits" were actually cheesy hash brown potatoes which were good but I was disappointed they weren't actually grits. The food was beautifully presented and gourmet delicious! Great work chef! I can't even explain what exactly I had so I'll just attach a photo, but it was "amazeballs"! The waitress never came back to me to see how it was. Refilled other's coffee's but never would even look in my direction when I tried to get her attention. I was never offered water or anything else, and by this time there were only a few people still dining because they were "closed", so it wasn't busy. She was cleaning up a nearby table and I asked for more coffee (again, it felt like I was completely overlooked as she chose to do that over checking in on a paying customer who was still there), she said "no problem". I finished my meal, sat and waited another 5 minutes and still no coffee or check in. So I got up walked over to the counter to pay. She again barely addressed me and then finally asked "how was everything?" I said food was great but could've used more coffee and she was like "oh sorry". I wanted to say "Seriously lady? Your service was terrible." But I didn't. I guess if you're a table of 1, are not rude or a local, you get crappy service. It's a shame too because the food is incredible! If I were closer, I'd give them another try to see if it was an off day or if that's the norm; hopefully the former. read more

Unique, never had an experience like it! Get there early, because they have a sign they only serve 40 "amazing humans" and then they close! Also be prepared to take some time as there can be a long wait for a table, and it's not speedy once you do sit down. The concept is somewhat out of left field. The "menu" has some adjectives and phrases as well as some actual food items. You order by description and the chef interprets it as she sees fit. For instance, my daughter ordered a "dreamy colorful waffle". I didn't get a picture of the result because she dug in too fast, but it was a red waffle with whipped cream, various fruits, and a few hidden gummy bears. My daughter's sheer joy at the silliness made the experience! Aside from the interesting menu approach, the food is really quite good. I ordered "meaty cheesy scrambled breakfast potatoes biscuit and gravy" and got what you see in the first picture. The biscuits could be described as "amaze balls" which is actually also on the menu. Don't know what amaze balls are, but the biscuits qualify! My son ordered "meaty cheesy extra spicy burrito with stuffed jalapeños" and got the second picture. He pronounced it super good. My wife got "meaty cheese extra spicy veggies omelet breakfast potatoes", see third picture. They did both comment that the "extra spicy" didn't really carry through but we have a very high spice tolerance as a family. Service is friendly and attentive, atmosphere is bright and funky. WTH!! On a road trip thru Montana, my wife and I stopped to stay in Livingston for the night! Went to a great place called the Mint for dinner and the next morning we went to Fey's for breakfast, Holy Moly! I will never have biscuits and gravy anywhere else again! So, looking back at other reviews, it seems to be all or none. I get that. I believe that your experience here is extremely dependent on how you're treated. Because the food is AWESOME. But if the menu isn't explained to you well, welllllll.... It's not your normal, everyday kind of place. So, I think they need to be extra careful about how they treat (and talk to) people. For instance, we heard them tell somebody who had signed in, and waited for quite a while, that they couldn't seat 6 people. With a PERIOD. No, "well, would you consider sitting in groups of 3?" Or "how can we make this work?" Just NO, we can't seat six. And I don't think our server explained the menu to us all that well. Other than that, like I said, the food was AWESOME! read more
