Fava had been on my radar ever since it took over the Juice Bar Collective location. My impression was that it was open only very limited hours and required advance online ordering on the dark web. Eager to try the famous lamb wrap, I wasn't sufficiently organized to procure one. While walking down Vine Street this morning, I observed that Fava was about to open for business. A small crowd was gathered on the sidewalk in anticipation. I did not stop right away: I did other shopping at Epicurious Garden but stopped by Fava on my way back up the street. To my amazement, there was no wait to order when I arrived. I was somewhat disappointed to learn that the lamb wrap had been supplanted by a spicy chicken sandwich. But, what the heck, I ordered the newer sando. The object in question, consumed about 45 minutes later, was wonderfully delicious. Waxing poetic, I could describe it as a symphony of tastes. Certainly the ingredients had been assembled with a great deal of thought. The sandwich was frankly great, though it wasn't much of a sandwich: picking it up with my hands would have resulted in a holy mess. A fork turned out to be very helpful. (I should add that the sandwich came in a compostable container and was accompanied by a compostable fork.) It would be nice if Fava were open more than 16 hours per week, but 16 hours is way way better than nothing. I'm delighted that I was able to order on the spot and hope that a similar opportunity will present itself again very soon. read more

Fava, a worthy eatery within the appropriately named Gourmet Ghetto serves up healthy Mediterranean style food. Created by Chez Panisse alumni Chefs Sylvie Osborne Calierno and Jeremy Scheiblauer, they aim to feed Berkeley with fresh, delicious, & simple meals. Since I learned all of these things after I had my meal, I had no expectations before I started to dig in. My meal: slow baked steelhead; the protein laid on top of a bed of stewed lentils next to a dollop of yogurt, served with marinated beets, sungold cherry tomatoes, and a carrot and cabbage slaw. Lets break this down; first, the fish: moist, tender, clean. Though the steelhead doesn't have too much seasoning added onto it, Fava does a good job on letting the fish speak for itself. The lentils were cooked thoroughly, flavorful, and filling. Usually I am able to eat a lot but because of the lentils I finished satisfied. Marinated beets were sweet, retained a lot of their moisture, and best described to taste the way fresh cut grass smells. Unlike regular cherry tomatoes that are a mixture of sweetness and tartness, the sungold cherry tomatoes just tasted sweet. Lastly, the carrot cabbage slaw might have been pickled; I remember it tasting tart. The color combination of the ingredients with the sprigs of herbs tucked into the entrée makes the dish look like a work of edible art. The flatbread was delicious- soft and had a chewy bite to it- it tasted homemade. The chicken was spiced well and the mountain of herbs on top of it was a little intimidating, but tasted so good all together. There were also spicy chilis in there that gave it the perfect kick.
