I really love this narrow little take-out place in North Berkeley. As casual as it is, with counter service and cafe tables on the street, the food is A+++. I usually get salmon or chicken with veggies. The meat is always perfectly done, the veggies fresh and tender. I avoid gluten, and I don't have any problem getting delicious food here that allows me to sidestep my migraine triggers. The staff is friendly and awesome. I've had some stunner desserts here - a recent passionfruit angel food cake that blew my mind. And a coconut rice pudding. Their desserts are sweet - don't get me wrong - but they don't knock you out with the taste of sugar. Instead, the other complex flavors are at the forefront, which is what I like. I got the grilled chicken plate which came with tabbouleh, broccoli, slaw, yogurt, and a herb salad. I also got a mango lassi and cabbage slaw side. I didn't need to get the side since the plate already came with and the side was sizable. I loved all the colors and the mixture of fresh flavors and textures. The chicken was dark meat and it was juicy, and the tomatoes added a sweet hint of acidity. The various vegetables were fresh and crunchy and tasted "clean." I came here captivated hearing about the lamb flatbread sandwich, but was sad to find out they replaced it with a spicy chicken version. However, it was still super flavorful and packed with greens. I ordered ahead of time online and was worried the flatbread would be soggy from marinating in the sauces/chicken juice for so long, but the structure of the flatbread maintained its integrity! I've also never had flatbread quite like the one from here and really enjoyed it- it was like a thicker tortilla. The mango lassi was creamy and yogurt-rich, and I was really impressed by the tahini chocolate chip cookie. Fava had been on my radar ever since it took over the Juice Bar Collective location. My impression was that it was open only very limited hours and required advance online ordering on the dark web. Eager to try the famous lamb wrap, I wasn't sufficiently organized to procure one. While walking down Vine Street this morning, I observed that Fava was about to open for business. A small crowd was gathered on the sidewalk in anticipation. I did not stop right away: I did other shopping at Epicurious Garden but stopped by Fava on my way back up the street. To my amazement, there was no wait to order when I arrived. I was somewhat disappointed to learn that the lamb wrap had been supplanted by a spicy chicken sandwich. But, what the heck, I ordered the newer sando. The object in question, consumed about 45 minutes later, was wonderfully delicious. Waxing poetic, I could describe it as a symphony of tastes. Certainly the ingredients had been assembled with a great deal of thought. The sandwich was frankly great, though it wasn't much of a sandwich: picking it up with my hands would have resulted in a holy mess. A fork turned out to be very helpful. (I should add that the sandwich came in a compostable container and was accompanied by a compostable fork.) It would be nice if Fava were open more than 16 hours per week, but 16 hours is way way better than nothing. I'm delighted that I was able to order on the spot and hope that a similar opportunity will present itself again very soon. read more

Fava, a worthy eatery within the appropriately named Gourmet Ghetto serves up healthy Mediterranean style food. Created by Chez Panisse alumni Chefs Sylvie Osborne Calierno and Jeremy Scheiblauer, they aim to feed Berkeley with fresh, delicious, & simple meals. Since I learned all of these things after I had my meal, I had no expectations before I started to dig in. My meal: slow baked steelhead; the protein laid on top of a bed of stewed lentils next to a dollop of yogurt, served with marinated beets, sungold cherry tomatoes, and a carrot and cabbage slaw. Lets break this down; first, the fish: moist, tender, clean. Though the steelhead doesn't have too much seasoning added onto it, Fava does a good job on letting the fish speak for itself. The lentils were cooked thoroughly, flavorful, and filling. Usually I am able to eat a lot but because of the lentils I finished satisfied. Marinated beets were sweet, retained a lot of their moisture, and best described to taste the way fresh cut grass smells. Unlike regular cherry tomatoes that are a mixture of sweetness and tartness, the sungold cherry tomatoes just tasted sweet. Lastly, the carrot cabbage slaw might have been pickled; I remember it tasting tart. The color combination of the ingredients with the sprigs of herbs tucked into the entrée makes the dish look like a work of edible art. Currently no dine in so had to order for takeout, street parking available. Tl;dr: Slow Baked Steelhead is a clean, delicious, and wonderfully presented meal. read more

Mint and beets together blew my mind. I would certainly order this again! I have to disagree with the negative review of the hummus. I had the cumin hummus and I thought it was incredibly tasty. I felt the hummus was smooth, well seasoned (not too salty or oily), and had a nice Smokey cumin flavor. I ordered lunch for 50+ public school teachers from here and it was a HUGE hit! We ordered the falafel and chicken plates, and the spicy chicken flatbread! The flatbread was delicious- soft and had a chewy bite to it- it tasted homemade. The chicken was spiced well and the mountain of herbs on top of it was a little intimidating, but tasted so good all together. There were also spicy chilis in there that gave it the perfect kick. Their hummus was tasty and really unique! I also tried their green juice- perfection on a warm day! In the middle of their lunch rush, they managed to pack up all the lunch plates with joy and love.
