Been trying for quite some time to visit this Pleasantville dining establishment. Finally the stars were aligned for a Monday visit before a Jacob Burns showcase. The wait was more than worth it... The modest dining room doesn't do the menu justice. Everything ordered this night was a tasteful success. Shared starters of the "Shrimp Toast" and "Chicken Dumplings" brought tremendous smiles upon everyone. For our main courses the "Spicy Crunchy Zesty Chicken" came alive with flavor. A standout among standouts. The "Satay Bowl" - with chicken - was another winner along with the "Spicy Beef Noodles". We arrived at 5:30 and the place was packed by 6:15...on a Monday. Outstandingly good! Visited here with my girl this weekend and we were both surprised. She is vegetarian. I am not. However, we both found a number of pleasing dishes to share and satisfy both of our palettes. We started with edamame, kale dumplings, crispy broccoli and Korean wings (for me). My main course was spicy crunchy zesty chicken bowl. She substituted chicken with tofu for her dish. All of the dishes 'popped' with flavor and the portions generous all around. First time and last. Sorry to say the food was far from good...ordered the chicken satay bowl with rice noodles as did my friend. The chicken was deep fried and dried out. My friend ordered it the same way and said where are the noodles? Underneath was a clump of rice noodles all stuck together. I waS able to mix it with by separating the noodles after a great deal of effort. There was barely any peanut sauce but since it was barely edible anyway i asked for hoisin sauce which enabled me to eat this poorly prepared dish. Excellent find in downtown Pleasantville! The hubby has gluten and dairy intolerances and the owner came out and went over each menu item with us which was really great! We've been here a few times before and they've recently remodeled the place into a nicer dining setting with a bar. Today we tried the kale dumpling's which were AMAZING (course those aren't gluten free but I ordered those for me); we also tried the Dan Dan noodles which had the option of rice noodles, we tried the tuna poke and the hamachi appetizer. Disappointed. Went for lunch and only one other customer in restaurant with me. The ramen was not terrible but disappointed in almost every way. The chicken bao buns were ill conceived. We'll be back but we won't rush back. The food is extremely rich and filling the outdoor seating was nice in mid-September a bit chilly but comfortable. The service was sweet, attentive and knowledgeable about the food and opinionated (instead of just saying everything's good) which was much appreciated since it was our first time here. The food was also prepared and served promptly. It's tasty but when we order a spicy Thai dish we expect it to have some heat they mean spicing my American style which is super low heat. Next time we'll ask if they can make it spicier. The noodles were coated with a sauce that made it super filling after just a few bites. Fatt Root is an Asian fusion inspired casual concept. The menu stretches classic flavor profiles like Malaysian coconut curry with tamarind, lime, basil, and cilantro, towards American classics like Teriyaki chicken and California rolls, and towards fusion "Bunz" that integrate kale and tahini into novel American/Asian interpretations. Fusion often gets a bad rep. And at first maybe the thought of pesto/spinach in a spicy Sichuan beef noodles made me cringe too, but Fatt Root does a reasonable job navigating this tricky territory. The classic Hakata style ramen's tonkotsu broth is deep and flavorful. The pork belly is tender and fatty. The Malaysian coconut curry and rice is complex with notes of spicy, sweet, savory, and citrus. The sauce is thick enough to coat a spoon, but not so thick that it doesn't flow over rice easily. The spicy beef noodles are part Italian with pesto, but it's made from Yuzu Kosho - a fermented Japanese seasoning made of chili peppers, yuzu peel, and salt. And combined with caramelized cashews and raw spinach. It's the milder quiet-spoken Americanized brethren of Xian's Famous Foods hand-pulled noodles. I would argue more pasta than noodles, but notable nonetheless. My recommendations are the curry dishes and the ramen. read more

I was at this place when it was a takeout joint. They really upgraded the appearance to a very soothing atmosphere. I appreciated that the manager unobtrusively made it a point to come to our table to say hi. The adorable bartender (who looked barely drinking age) served up some delicious cocktails, knew the entire menu, both food and drink, and had no problem with any substitutions. The Crunchy Cabbage was a simple fresh raw collaboration of exactly that, perfectly seasoned and oh so healthy! I ordered the kale dumplings 'cause they looked so tempting but forgot I don't like kale. You CAN taste the kale. The other's at our table did like them, so for kale fans, go for it. I had the Spicy Beef Noodles which was super fresh with a really nice pesto and plenty of beef. The only drawback was that the spinach on top was dry and the noodles and beef on the bottom had all the umami. They served it with chopsticks only so it was hard to toss together. It may be my ignorance of the custom, but it would have been even better if I knew in advance to stir it up well. A friend and I stopped here for lunch on a hot day in June with my little dog and enjoyed the shaded patio area. It was no problem having him with us. We both ate vegan / vegetarian, and had some great options to choose from! We split the Kale & Veggie dumplings, which were delicious! Then I had the Saytay bowl and he had the Kinchee Tofu + Egg bowl. Everything was great, we were very happily full at the end. One note on size, the bowls are very large. Very cute small place we came across. It was definitely busy but we got there a good time. Service was good, the waitress was helpful with recommendations as well. The food was delicious and the drinks were tasty. We the chicken dumplings and chicken bao buns to start, they were amazing ! Then we had the Korean skirt steak and Fatt Bahn Mi (a sandwich) which were tasty as well. Finally we had some mini donuts with a sweet sauce, which were delicious and I wish the portion was bigger. I've been meaning to try out Fatt Root for awhile. I'm always really curious about Asian Fusion Restaurants and exactly how they mix Asian inspired flavors/ingredients differently. The place itself is pretty esthetic with a line of Sirracha sauce bottles lining the back wall, woven lanterns and the accented pop of red that adorns the chairs and polls. The place itself has an almost Chipotle style vibe with it's menu that is divided into ways you can customize the dish yourself. There is a preset menu that is pretty extensive itself. At first glance, the menu looks to have a variety of Asian dishes such as dumplings, meat buns, rice with meat and noodle dishes but I would say there are a good amount of more "familiar" dishes for those less adventurous. I ordered two of the appetizers: the Spicy Kimchee Pork Dumplings (8.99) and the Steam Chicken Bunz (8.99). My friend ordered the Spicy Crunchy Zesty Chicken over noodles instead of rice (14.99). It was nice to be able to customize the dish. The spicy kimchee pork dumplings came fried with a good amount of sauce, shallots, green onions, and fried onions on top. The sauerkraut was a nice add of acidity and crunch. The dumplings were a good appetizer but wished it was a bit cheaper for how small they were. I also ordered the Steam Chicken Bunz with crispy chicken topped with hoisin and mayo. I wasn't a huge fan of the Steam Bunz. I thought the mayo was a pretty jarring fatty flavor that didn't work with my palate. Overall, I thought Fatt Root is a nice addition to the area. The Korean steak is sweet but not overpowering. I would stay away from it if you don't like sweet food though. The eggs didn't have a lot of flavor but the rest of the dish was full of flavor. The slaw salad was refreshing and a good balance with the beef. Also the proportions are perfect for me, maybe a little on the big side. Lastly the food is pricey in my opinion, this dish was about 20 dollars which fits the quality and amount but I don't typically spend that much on meals. Thoroughly enjoyed lunch yesterday during support small business Saturday. I've been trying to get up to Pleasantville for quite some time to dine in but circumstances precluded me from going until now. Outdoor dining is available with a few tables set up on the side of building but it was too damp for us to enjoy dining outdoors. No outside heaters in sight. Street parking as well as parking lots in the nearby vicinity are convenient. Lucky for me someone was pulling out of a street parking spot very close to restaurant as well as the town had free parking Saturday, insert smile! Shared the crispy chicken steam bao with my daughter. The flavorful crispy chicken was glazed with hoisin, shredded iceberg lettuce with a smear of sriracha mayo. My eyes said more but my tummy said, "no don't do it!" My rice bowl was another hoisin inspired dish, barbecue glazed ribs. The ribs were tender, fall of the bone and delicious. The portions are generous and with the quality of food you are getting a good bang for your buck. My bowl was completed with rice, pickled shallots, cilantro and a bit more lettuce with sriracha mayo. My daughter ordered the Impossible Dan Dan noodles adding a protein, beef. She is not a fan of cilantro so asked it to be removed from the dish which they happily obliged. Both of our portions were plentiful so much so that my daughter took food home. You can customize dishes with added proteins at an additional cost. The slices of beef with the Dan Dan was very satisfying. There were more than several dishes with my name written all over them which is how I determine if it's a place I would return to and yes I will be back! I wish Yelp also had 1/2 stars available. This is a 4.5 but I gave it 5 because it was better than the 4 rating of "good." Good is a bit too pedestrian for me. Great sounds better but it's in between good and great. Closer to great. Side note: If you are traveling north from lower Westchester county and using GPS do not follow mapping directing you to get off at 26 and take the Taconic to Exit 4. Totally unnecessary driving. After doing some research I knew Fatt Root was going to be great. I visited with some friends and the food didn't disappoint. We all enjoyed what we had. My steak and eggs rice bowl was very tasty. Fatt Root suffers a bit from a lack of customer service. What I mean by that is our waitress wasn't the most attentive nor friendly, nor knowledgeable about most things we asked about the menu. It all went down hill when we wanted to move to a more intimate table and our waitress seemed annoyed, and overwhelmed all of a sudden. I noticed she smiled at other tables and dreaded coming to ours. One thing about my friends and I we love a good experience wherever we eat, and that wasn't it at Fatt Root. Asian fusion done right. Whereas a lot of restaurants will coat their wok-fried chicken in a couple of regional glazes, offer pad thai and call it a day, Fatt Root truly offers a variety of dishes across the Asian repertoire (at least, the American perception of the Asian fast food repertoire) and for the most part does them all very well, even excellently. If you do one thing, order the steamed buns. But first, Fatt Root offers a large, clean dining space. You've got tables, you've got a bar, and an efficient setup where the staff brings your food to you, taking maybe a little longer than a wait at McDonald's. It's not a terribly atmospheric or "fancy" environment, but Fatt Root strikes a chord higher than your average Chipotle. Food being the point, Root delivers. The Thai curry noodles were incredibly aromatic, especially once the provided lime was squeezed into them; noodles just tough enough, and the curry broth/sauce was in between a soup base and a thick sauce. The Korean steak and eggs--whose steak was closer to a tenderly cooked brisket--and the Thai meatballs are all served over a bed of crunchy vegetables that almost feel like a dry coleslaw, as well as Fatt Root's great rice. It's flavorful in itself, and neither too dry nor is it mushy. Good Asian cuisine, I find, often starts with good rice. The actual Thai meatballs were good, if a little plain. Same for the shotgun dumplings: Solid, but nothing terrific. The steamed buns though? Pure bliss. Imagine a slice of perfectly crispy, fried chicken, slathered in a sweet hoisin sauce and crisp cabbage. Then wrap it in a cushiony, doughy bun. These were wonderful. I need more. It's not exactly cheap when compared to other modern fast food joints (which Fatt Root ultimately is), but for the quality I think the experience is worth undertaking. Asian fusion usually means terrible sushi and weird Chinese food or hipster Americanized Asian cuisine with flavors and spices that just don't blend well. But surprisingly Fatt Root breaks the mode and actually delivers on true Asian flavors and spices. Cool hip place. The block it's on can be extremely congested especially during rush hour because of the train station. But I never have a problem finding parking. Also if you pass by and see what looks like a bunch of people waiting to be seated don't be deterred because most likely it's for take out orders. We rarely ever wait for a table even on weekends. Love all the vegetarian options. The Kimchee Tofu egg bowl is delicious and my favorite appetizer is kale and veggie dumplings. The Malaysian coconut curry & rice is a perfect example of blending various flavors perfectly. The kids meals are great as well. These aren't thrown together dishes to appease parents. They are a generous size and have as much care and thought put into them as the rest of the menu. The kids Crispy chicken and broccoli is a favorite in my family. Nothing sounded good until she read the description for Fatt Root. Way better than I expected. Everything was so good. I got the Korean steak and eggs and she got the ramen and we shared the pork dumplings and the chicken buns. Everything exceeded my expectations. The steak was juicy and tender, the ramen had just the right amount of spice, the dumplings were good size and full of flavor and the chicken buns were probably my favorite thing. I'm glad I got to hit up this spot, which is mainly Asian food of different kinds! They thankfully have many vegan options and a few options that can be made vegan since everything is made to order fresh. I love the clearly labeled vegan options and the other indicators. I of course had to get the Impossible Dan Dan Noodles despite it being my 3rd time having Impossible this week. I clearly see the hype of this place as well as the hype from the vegans that have got this already from pictures I already saw. It has the perfect amount of spice and peanut flavor and they are very generous with the Impossible meat as well as the noodles. It was perfect for this suddenly very cold Fall day in Westchester! I highly recommend this place for the atmosphere and all the interesting food options they have. If you're coming from the train station, all you do is exit the station (if coming from lower Westchester or Bronx/Manhattan at least) and it's to your left as you walk out.
