Last month my sisters and I did our PADI open water certification through Fathom Five and had a great experience! Sage was fantastic and so patient with us during our pool skills day. Anthony was our instructor for our shore dives and we had an incredible experience with him. He was so knowledgeable and really focused on safety. He was also so passionate about marine life and took the time to show us so many cool things during our dives. Had an awesome shore dive at Koloa Landing dive with dive masters Chase and John. Our group included 2 certified and 3 uncertified divers. The dive masters were thorough in their explanations and instructions and didn't rush anyone. When one of our uncertified divers became nervous, John took extra time with him one on one and he became more and more comfortable, completing both dives with a huge smile. Fathom Five is the best in this area especially for new divers. I've dove with other outfits in the area and while they are all great, Fathom Five stands out. Great outfit to dive with. Gear was in good condition and boat was comfortable to get out to dive sites on. Our dive master, Brad, gave a very thorough overview of the dive sites and I felt very safe diving with him. The boat captain, Bo, was fun to chat with and super helpful getting geared up for the dive and helping get gear back into the boat after the dive. Excellent shore dive at Koloa landing with dive master "Jessie". She was very knowledgeable about the environment and this allowed us to see many things we would not have otherwise. We saw octopus, reef fish of all varieties endemic to HI, many turtles, eels and hard to spot camouflage fish varieties like scorpion fish. I have dove all over the Caribbean, costs rica and Maui. I had two days of diving and totally different experience. I enjoyed diving with Charlie and Anthony. Despite of having different experience level divers they handled the situation great and everybody had a great time. I know it was not easy. The following day I dove with Jessica and I could not say the same with her. Her first choice of dive site was great. We hit a perfect condition and even saw an eagle ray. The second dive site was chosen partly because the shallower site had green water. However I did not expect to dive two deep dive sites. It was not appropriate. Even with Nitrox I did not have much of dive time. Imagine those without Nitrox. She also took camera with her, which I do not approve. In my opinion dive master should not have a camera while s/he is on duty. The family of four who dove with us went up first, and then I signaled her that I was going up. She did not follow me. That is also a no no for me. No paid customer should wait for a dive master to come up. Another thing I would like to see is 1hr interval between dives. It is for safety as well as having decent 2nd dive. read more

We did a two tank morning dive with Jordan and Greg. Jordan seriously knows his stuff. It was akin to diving with a marine biologist. He knew the biology, the behavior, and the rarity of many of the endemic species on Kauai. He's a wonderful divemaster! On the extreme plus side, we did get to see a whale shark while in the water. I don't think I've ever been more excited in my life! Jordan knows this island and its dive sites so well... you're guaranteed to have a wonderful time. More importantly, their approach to diving is easy to get on board with (get it?). They don't take huge groups out like their competitors do. They're all about enjoying the scenery at your own pace. Highly recommended! Kori and I did four fives total over two days off of the island of Kauai. Our dive masters, Carlos and Maggie, were awesome. One of us was a beginner (first ocean dive, first boat dive), and I was very rusty not having been in the ocean in 10 years. Everything from the booking to the rescheduling to arrival, orientation, the finally the dive, was great. Scheduling I had to reschedule our dives twice. We switched our second day to a shore dive. No problem either time. Prep and Orientation Our equipment was all ready at the dive site as advertised. No drama there. Newish BCDs and wetsuits. Entry, boat seating, descent, safety stops, lost diver procedure, etc. were explained in plain language that made us feel comfortable about the dive. Carlos knew a lot about the local sea life, and talked us through what to look for on the dive. We saw Scorpionfishes, Moray Eels, Parrotfish, etc. as promised. The "ecology orientation" was a really nice touch that I hadn't expected. The Dive We went to two different dive sites that were close to shore. The shore dive was an easy entry and swim out to the buoy. I had some issues clearing my ears on the first descent, but Maggie stayed back with me while the group went ahead -- nice, so I didn't feel like I was holding up everyone else in our group of six. Having two dive masters on a small group is pretty great! All in all, a great experience and highly recommended. I think customer service (and in this case, safety) is almost always above all else, and Fathom Five didn't disappoint. read more

Jessie was the bomb. This was my first ever intro to diving that I was practically daring myself to do. During my first 15 minutes in the water, I was convinced that I was wasting everyone's time by sticking to the surface, where I was most comfortable as a snorkeler. I mean, how do you convince yourself to be comfortable with breathing underwater? With bubbles coming out at your side while anything can pop out at you at any moment? Freaky, right? I tried reassuring myself by remembering everything Jessie said onshore. And she was hella cool about it in the water and being super patient, reassuring, and making me comfortable with where I was at. While a few other folks got their weights to go deeper, I skimmed the surface. And then, just like she said, something clicked and felt normal about it all. Ten minutes later, I was a mermaid reaching further down than I'd ever imagined. Readjusting for pressure was super fun and I wanted to see EVERYTHING! ...and then it happened. A massively humongous turtle popped out of nowhere and came swimming right for me*. It was frightening. And AWESOME! I was like Ricky Bobby riding in the car with a cheetah. Water got in my mask, I lost my respirator thingy, and then I just popped it out of my mouth for the heck of it. I was like daring things to happen to me so I could solve them underwater. That's how badass I was feeling. During my second dive, I ate a little humble pie when I got air trapped in my thingy and couldn't stop myself from floating to the surface. Jessie caught me, untrapped the air, and I went happily back to mermaid-ing. No more turtles came at me but I still felt like a badass swimming around and looking up at the surface that I was so scared to leave before. Jessie pointed some cool sea stuff out and I feel like that should be significant in this review but for me, her instruction and support meant way much more. She made sure that I was safe and comfortable the entire time and THAT is just as cool (if not more) than many of the kick ass things I saw underwater. Big props to Jessie for helping me through this thing that I'd never imagined doing...and hooking me up with sour cream & onion chips. *The turtle didn't actually come right for me. I swam in his path. And he croaked. Kinda like what I do when people driving in front of me don't use their blinkers. read more

I picked them based on all of the great reviews on here, but I feel like Seasport Divers beats them hands-down in terms of knowledgeable and accommodating staff. They weren't terrible but, man, their boat was a P.O.S. We went on one two tank boat dive and also on their Ni'ihau dive. I've been on plenty of boats, but coming back after the dives was insane. It is almost a three hour boat ride of non-stop impact. Like getting into a 25mph car collision roughly every 30 seconds. This is not even a matter of sea-sickness but of bodily injury--I knocked my head pretty badly. I know we took more knocks than were necessary because everyone wanted to get home early, I'm also aware that the best spot to avoid the knocks is the back of the boat, even so, the next day my neck and back were incredibly sore which is never fun on vacation. The crew seemed a little condescending (except for the sweet Texan girl in the shop. She was very friendly and professional). I get this vibe when men call my 150lb Korean husband "hoss" or "cheif" that they are being sarcastic and obnoxious. It just irritates me to no end. No, we don't all SCUBA dive for a living, so we aren't as good as you are... read more

THE Dive Outfit to go with on Kaua'i. 5 star PADI certified, and they do intro to scuba dives, certification dives, as well as boat trips- all excellent! Professional, great equipment, knowledgable people who still are enthused about diving! (Rare to find on Hawaii sometimes.) 2 tank boat dives with gear is around $130, the boat dives don't start that early (7AM at the shop) so it's a little easier than diving on Maui. Boat dives are limited to 6 passengers max, which is just about right. Try them for an intro to scuba dive off Koloa Landing! read more

If there was a way to give 2.5 stars, I'd do it. The dive was quite pleasant while underwater, but the boat was quite decrepit and in disrepair. So it was a bit unsettling when getting on the boat. Captain Tom Getty was great though! Very pleasant and helpful. On the other hand, our dive master Steve did not seem to want to even be out with us on the dive. His briefing beforehand was done while he was placing weights on our BCD's and therefore he wasn't even facing us while speaking. He went through it so quickly, that I missed some of it I'm sure. One of his comments was: "I'm not here to babysit you...." and then continued with some other condescending words afterwards. It's a shame, because he could have made it a bit more memorable in a pleasant way, but not so. We may consider diving with another charter next time. read more

I dive with Fathom Five at least 3 times when I visit. George, the owner is super sweet guy! Totally cares about your time and what you see. The crew are all friendly and are always interested in taking you to new dive spots! I love tunnels, lots of turtles. One time I even swam with a Monk Seal! If yer gonna dive Kauai, these guys are great. It is a no frills outfit with a small boat and they are focused on the dive. There is none of the macho dive master crap you get with a lot of dive companies, they only take 6 people max so yer not part of the cattle call and they know the place so well, they can shift gears on the fly as far as dive sites go. We had a great dive at the caverns with lots of turtles, eels and guardian crabs figting off the crown of thorns star fish. It was a great first tank. My brother-in-law's father wasn't feeling well so they took us all the way back to the harbor. No big deal. We did our surface interval there and then went back out. We went to the ledges and the dive guide tried very hard to find something for us to see. Unfortunately, there wasn't much there. We all used their gear and it worked great for me. We all had computers and integrated weight which is always a plus. Some of my family had some suspect expereinces with integrated octopus leaks and gauges but I cannot confirm or deny user error. This is a great outfit if you aren't looking for the gourmet food or fancy boat. read more

We arrived at the shop to check in and then traveled to the beach to meet the other couple that would be diving and Jesse our instructor. Funny story: I was given the wrong (smaller) wet suit on accident, after trying to pull that sausage casing on, taking skin off 3 knuckles and a blister, I gave up. We then realized I had the wrong suit. Weird how the correct suit went on so easily. The other lady and I were new the scuba while our sig. others are certified. The guys went out to wait for us while Jesse did skills with us. She took me to the bottom. I was having issues clearing my ears but finally got the hang of it. I was at the bottom with M while waiting for the other couple. Around 1300 of oxygen, I was getting concerned that I would have enough left to explore. She brought us up to explain that the other lady wouldn't go down and we were to change our tanks. After getting a snack and fresh tank the guys went down, she helped me get down to the sea floor and we were off. We saw fish, eel, a couple turtles, mono-ray and tons of cool stuff. It was definitely an experience when your laying on your elbows on the sea floor, 5' from a turtle. I think he was getting pissed so we left. She would play with the fish and eels. Thank you Jesse for being SOOOOOO patient and fun. read more

This company was awesome. We were the only two people in the group and I felt we had our own private dive! They even brought someone along to take pictures for us without charge which was a huge plus. They were extremely good with teaching us the basics of scuba and were extremely patient with our fears initially. There are probably a plethora of scuba companies out there and I can't rate all of them but you definitely can't go wrong with these guys! read more

great dive company with friendly staff (everyone, from store staff to captain, to dive masters)...word of advise, if you're feeling adventours or curious about the afternoon dives, skip it, afternoon's are always murky and poor visibility did 6 tanks with them across 2 days...i didnt care for sheraton caverns as we did it last year...and we did sheraton caverns with fathom on dive 1 and 3...ugh...but i understand that conditions werent great for other sites and they had a couple of divers who has never done sheraton... the last dive though, dive 5 and 6 were great. dive master Debbie and captain George was amazing...they had such great energy, and the site...wow.....the site was amazing...saw a GIANT colorful hermit crab...huge turtle swimming, turtles getting cleaned. two octopus (octopi?), and two white tip reef sharks....along with a humongous school of pretty fishy-ies.... absolutely recommen fathom five..you dont get the BS run around like other companies (bubbles?)...false promises and last minute changes/cancellations read more

I have no idea how they possibly have a five star review. That was hands down the biggest sh*t show of a dive shop I have ever dealt with. To start, I had spoken to them on the phone weeks before our trip to book our dives and the day we showed up they had it booked incorrectly. We had an afternoon dive planned the first day. The shop, the owner and the DM all had know the water conditions for our dive location that afternoon and instead of a heads up that it was barely 15ft of visibility, they took our $500 for the dive and tried to charge us for 3 dives out of the same location before we even knew how bad it was. The second day we did a boat dive and that DM was wonderful. The clarity was great and the whole trip was fabulous. But then the shop messed up again. We had given them a card to charge prior to the dive and somehow they still charged the wrong card. Luckily once we were home we could call and get the charges cleared up over the phone. If you have a chance to dive Kauai, I recommend it when the water clarity is good. Just maybe pick a different dive shop. read more

First time to Kauai so I did plenty of research on the dive company's here and spoke to a buddy that lives in the island and every road lead to Fathom Five. Initially I had booked a 3 tank boat dive but when that fell apart because of weather and no other 3 dive bookings they flooded me with options so I could still go blow bubbles. Ended up doing 2 beach dives and 2 boat dives. Different guides on both days but both were everything you'd expect from a 5 star dive outfit. KC guided the boat dives, she's young, energetic and knows her shit. It was great that you dive at your skill, none of this first diver up all up nonsense. I got my shark fill and my turtle fill. If I come back to Kauai Fathom Five will be my choice. read more

If you are SCUBA curious while vacationing in Kaua'i, consider visiting the good folks at Fathom Five. They offer an excellent introductory shore dive for $140 (note: shore, not boat which can be intimidating your first time out). You get training (some in water), and a total of two dives in the shores off of Po'ipu (Koloa Landing). My wife was nothing short of nervous about the endeavor, but the Fathom Five crew did all that they could to put her at ease. Our instructor, Holly, was absolute tops. She took time to explain things, moved at a comfortable pace, and was encouraging without being pushy. In the water, she acted as both guide and instructor, showing us wildlife and constantly checking in to make sure everyone was comfortable. She admittedly struggles with names, but her skills as an instructor more than make up for that sort of thing. If you feel like taking a chance on a dive, you can hardly go wrong here. If you happen to get Holly, tell her "Maria" sent you. Hopefully she'll get the joke. :) read more

Went out on a dive with Charles and Charles. Both nice guys, Charles the dive master was especially great when he helped my fiancee get over a minor panic attack as we were going on the first dive. For purposes of full disclosure I also had a panic attack type thing but it occured after Charles and my fiancee had already gone under so I skipped that entire dive! No fault of Charles, just a call I made for my own mental well being. I had it together for the second dive and had a great experience. I appreciate the small groups (no more than 6 at a time). This does pose something of a problem when there is a disparity in skill level (i.e. I am pretty novice whereas everyone else on the tour was pretty experienced). The boat is pretty basic, but in the end the people were great and that's what really makes a good diving experience. read more

Highly recommended! My wife and I had done introductory dives elsewhere before, but we did our certification dives (confined and open water) with Fathom Five. They were great on the phone answering my questions, called to confirm before every dive and were fabulous in the water. Went with Fathom Five for a two-tank trip while I was in Kauai. Showed up at the shop a bit early, and got spot-on driving directions to the dock after checking in for the dive. I brought all of my gear, and met the captain and dive master at the dock. After assembling my gear, the captain offered to stow the dry stuff below deck. Four more divers showed up, and after a quick briefing, we were off! Both sites were good and within 15 min of the dock. Saw plenty of turtles, white-tip reef sharks and nudibranches on a solid 49 and a 50min of bottom time! Would definitely go with them again in Kauai. We had a solid group of divers and no one ran into any issues. Kudos to the DM Steve who pointed out a spot a pair of sharks were hiding out. Snacks and drinks were aplenty during the surface interval. During the dive, we had frequent air checks and always knew where the mooring line was at all times, the only problem was narrowly avoiding deco due to the long bottom times :-) read more

A great little dive shop. Max six people on the boat dives. We did a refamiliarization two tank shore dive (it'd been ten years since we last dove) with Sean, and then three two tank boat dives. Divemaster Michelle was great, as was Sean who did the refamiliarization. We felt very safe. They are very thorough, no details got lost. Loni very accommodating on scheduling. My only complaint is they don't sell caps with their logo, only t-shirts. Big mistake! read more

Downloaded an App, Kauai Revealed. Up-to-date recs for everything on the island, without paid sponsorship. Went by the apps recommendation to dive with these guys. From start to finish they were the most friendly, accommodating crew. I wish I could remember the girls name in the shop(from SLC?, new to the island) so kind and helpful. The other girl in the shop was so attentive and nice too(short hair). My dive instructor, Ray, this girl was 10/10!!!! Amazing and understanding. She was aware of my obsession with sea turtles(who isn't obsessed?!) but let me set my own pace for the entire dive. She pointed out marine life that I would have otherwise missed(because of turtle obsession). It's been a couple years since I've been out, but Ray had the most patience with me. Little things that you forget after years off--she calmly reminded me and didn't make me feel like a total idiot. I would really recommend these guys. They personalize the dive, every need. And, ALSO, they're affordable. Can't ask for more, and I would highly recommend to anyone looking to dive on Kauai. read more

We brought our 4 children from Alaska to complete their open water dives with Fathom Five Divers and we are so happy with our choice. As previously certified divers, my wife and I rented equipment as tag-a-longs and were able to take pictures and experience this special occasion with our children. The staff was professional and the instructors were fabulous! The walk-in landing provides a great place on the south island with consistently better weather and less swells than other places on the island. The diving was great with lots of eels and fish to check out, as well as some cool underwater topography. We were even fortunate that at this time of year the humpback whales are near and we were able to hear their whalesong during the last dive. read more

I didn't actually go into the dive shop. I only spoke with a guy on the phone when I called to arrange a dive on the north shore. He didn't seem to enthusiastic about giving me info, even though I had many questions about diving on the island and what to expect. So I was a little dubious and unsure. We scheduled a shore dive from Tunnels beach, on the north shore. It turns out this is the only place to dive on the north shore. No dive operators go up there and no boats launch. We showed up a few minutes late to meet Jeannette, who was one of the best dive masters I've ever had. She was friendly, knowledgable, enthusiastic, and knew everything about diving in this location. She gave us an extensive briefing and told us what we might see, what we could interact with, etc.. She made the whole experience two of the best dives I've ever had. They also had everything set up for us on the beach before we got there, including all tanks, BCD, etc.. There were chairs for us to sit in and snacks and drinks provided. I would recommend this dive to anyone. And be sure to ask for Jeannette! Also, the diving on Tunnels is very good, even with the challenge of limited visibility due to the heavy surf on the north shore. There is a lot of sea life and a lot of turtles. read more

Did a 2 tank dive off Tunnels, next to my hotel. The truck was there on-time, and their instructions for how to get there were spot-on. The DM Linda was great! She gave us a very informative overview of the site, which was definitely useful since I might have been pretty freaked out to go through those tunnels without warning! All the people I spoke to on the phone for scheduling and rescheduling were great too! And of course, snacks were delicious while we waited for the DMs to do the hard work of changing our tanks. read more
