Excellent choice for lunch. Southern cooking at its finest. If you like fried food, you can't go wrong with chicken or pork chops. The selection of sides feels like a holiday at grandma's. Very good food! The decor is welcoming. Try not to come right before closing. The staff is still very helpful, but they're trying to wrap up and may lack some warm fuzzies. I love this place, absolutely love it. I think you're going to be hard pressed to find a better lunch in downtown augusta! Service- A+!! We came in about 15 minutes before they closed and we were treated fantastically! They attended to us quickly and were incredibly polite when we realized that they closed in like 20 minutes. Food- B. My pot roast was cold but I also had the fried pickles, collard greens, and squash casserole. The sides were wonderful! The pot roast was good, but like I said it was cold. All in all, this place is great. It is encouraging when businesses move to downtown or close to downtown. I will definitely be back! read more

CATERING REVIEW We had Fat Man's for one of our monthly luncheons and they were absolutely wonderful! Hav is such a great person to work with, as was all of their staff we encountered, and the food is delicious! They arrived right on time and our guests were very well taken care of. Visited here for lunch today and the experience was 'OK'. The cashiers and staff were super friendly, and we received service promptly. Today I ordered their special, which was 3 cheese grilled cheese and New Orleans Gumbo($8). For $8 for a grilled cheese and small cup of soup, I was expecting something extravagant. This was not the case, however, as the grilled cheese just tasted like a standard grilled cheese that I could have made at my house and and the gumbo was ok but nothing memorable. Having actually visited New Orleans last month, It could have used a bit more salt/cajun flavor. All in all, it wasn't a bad/nasty meal by any means, it just was decent. read more

This is a pretty solid spot for home cooking. I haven't been to this new location but I have visited the Laney Walker location tons of times and when my mother worked at MCG, now GRU, they had a food stand in the student's cafeteria. I couldn't wait till lunch time to dine at their spot in the cafeteria!!! Their fried chicken is soooo good and those cabbages, seasoned to perfection!!! They also had some of the best cornbread too, so moist and yellow!!! When you bit into it, it would just crumble in your mouth!!! I need to make a trip to the new location to see if they still have some of these great items!!! My paternal grandmother swore by this place. This was her lunchtime spot!!! They are very reasonable too for all the things you get!!! Just writing this is making me so hungry!!! I need my fix as soon as possible!!!! read more

BEWARE OF "SINGLE USE SURCHARGE". My Receipt shows a "single use surcharge" in addition to the state and local sales taxes. I asked the cashier what it was and she did not know. Then a manager type indicated it was a charge to cover the restaurant's various increasing costs. In today's economy, I can understand restaurants increasing their prices, but please change the prices on the menu or make a visible disclosure that a surcharge will be added to the check. I will plan to visit again, but I will not go between 12:00 and 1:00. Our server was great, but there were way too many guests for one server to deliver drinks, meals, utensils, and condiments in a timely manner. There were 3 couples at my table arriving and ordering at different times; however, my partner and I ordered first, yet we received our meals when the others had almost finished eating. My partner and I ordered directly from the menu, no special request. As most reviews have indicated, the food was great. One of our orders was not exactly as ordered. We ordered a sandwich with no pickles. The sandwich was served with pickles, but no tomato. Such a minor mistake, certainly not worth sending the order back to the kitchen. Overall, the experience at Fat Man's was great. read more

I hate that I don't have a picture of my order, but I'm new to Yelp. I had the pork tacos and dill pickle fries..best lunch that I've had in a while. The tacos had slaw and BBQ sauce on them, and were delicious. I think that it was a special, but hopefully when I go back, it'll be on the regular menu. I was very disappointed. The restaurant was dirty, disorganized, and made me feel uneasy about the food quality. We had lunch for 5, and the only good thing that was servers were the French fries! I would never write a review like this, unless it was truly bad! read more

The food was excellent. It is the service I take issue with. My dining partner had almost finished her lunch, and I still did not have mine. I went to the counter and asked about it. This prompted them to deliver what they claimed was my order to my table. The grilled cheese sandwich was not on wheat bread as I had requested, I had no silverware for my potato salad AND my banana pudding was missing. This made yet another trip to the counter necessary to ask for silverware and my pudding. I had allowed 50 minutes to grab lunch before my boat reservation. I was extremely pushed to get down 2 bites of pudding, 2 bites of potato salad and half my grilled cheese. Need I explain that I will never try to eat there again?! I end by reiterating the food was actually excellent. Maybe some training of employees is my recommendation...... read more

Best meat and two I have had. The catfish was fresh, crisp and nicely seasoned. Mac and cheese and squash casserole were both very tasty.

For a museum Cafe this place should probably get 5 stars. Decent prices, good prepared in house, lots of options, outdoor seating, and friendly staff. Meh. Had chicken salad sandwich and potato salad for lunch. Chicken salad had nothing to it. Potato salad was SUPER under seasoned and had weird mushy texture to it. Went here after the canal tour. Food was awesome, staff was overly friendly and had a good time for lunch. Will visit again with family soon. Wonderful place to go, love the brick setting. I don't think I've ever given one star on a review before, and I want to explain. I've eaten @ Fat Man's Mill Cafe many times, and until today, I've never been disappointed. The food is good, solid food. Not the best ever, but far from the worst. The club is one of my favorites, in fact. But today I ordered The loaded fat burger. Not the healthiest sounding meal, but I wanted something different. As I stated before, I've been in a number of times, and I almost always get it to go. This time was no different. I got my meal, and I headed back to my nearby office. I ate my (very tasty) potato salad, and then dug into my burger. The bun was burnt. Now, I spent 20 years in the army. I don't mean it was toasted a little dark, I mean BURNT. It was a solid blacken bun, both top and bottom. That is the entire reason behind a one star review. If your idea of customer service is that a COMPLETELY BURNT bun is ok to serve to your customer's, then you don't want or need my business ever again. And if your employees have learned that it is ok, the same thing applies. I am incredibly disappointed in this experience. read more
