A place where we came for a quick and easy Thai fix and that is what we got. I really do want to give this place a higher rating as nothing was bad, but in representing Thai flavours and Thai dishes it really did not meet that standard so I wouldn't recommend it for a 'Thai' restaurant. Like most people have mentioned, prices are a bit deer for the simplicity of the dishes.
It was a small dinner so we shared the fish cakes whilst I had the Tom Yum Hed which is the vegetarian version of Tom Yum Soup, primarily consisted of mushrooms. I do love lemongrass in fish cakes and they seem to have got the flavours and seasoning perfect. It was tasty but felt like it had been re-cooked as the skin was too dry and wrinkly and lost a lot of moisture on the top. Usually the better quality ones are slightly more plump, juicy and the skin golden brown instead of dark and thinner. Still it was expected from a simple Thai restaurant and it was good for it's flavours.
The soup was lovely, slightly sweetened to match for Western palate which I preferred whilst still maintaining that strong kick of spice to warm me up. They were generous with the mushrooms which tasted fresh and overall a satisfying appetising start to our meal.
For mains we shared a Pad Thai prawn. It tasted like a average Thai takeaway which wasn't necessarily bad but it lacked the 'real' ingredients and tasted quite one noted. Flavours were primarily sweet, slightly sour but could have done with a bit of depth. It was slightly synthetic tasting but they did a good job with getting the flavours and seasoning balanced and was still very edible and enjoyable with the crunchy peanuts and extra lemon on the side for that needed zing to it. Noodles stuck together like they had over cooked the dry rice sticks too long or left it in the heat for too long. Luckily it still had a good bounce.
Surprisingly that was all we had as it left us satisfied for what we came in for. Service was very efficient although quiet. It lacked a bit of energy but still they made sure we got our tap water refiled and even handed us lovely complimentary dark chocolate mints with our bill.
I did love the decor which made the meal feel more special then it was. It was dark, sexy, chic like decor with the luxurious glitter cushions, feathered lampshades with statues from the Buddha/Taoism religion. The place was clean and all staff were Thai which bought out the authenticity feel to it.
To be honest there isn't much going on in terms of restaurants in the area of Brentford so Fat Boys is a nice addition to have in the area. It's good for the business for what it is serving as it is a quiet area and any more investment could lead to trouble for the restaurant. Wouldn't particularly recommend it but if you're in the area then it's worth a try. read more
