I am glad Robin has given this place a three star, because then that means the average will be 3 and a half, which is what I think it deserves. We went for lunch and we were the first customers in at 12pm. We weren't sure if it was open or not as the staff was dining in one of the end tables. Fortunately it was. The waitress greeted us with a smile but maybe a bit annoyed that we interrupted her lunch. The other thing that was a bit of an experience buster, was that they were delivering the beer, and the door was opened and closed about five times, it was very chilly. I was under the impression deliveries were made out of working hours. Anyhow, my dish was lovely, had the steamed mussels with a chilli and lemongrass sauce, my husband even said it was the first time since he can remember that my dish was better than his (complete lie, mine are usually better...) In addition as a starter we shared the prawn steamed dumplings that were just the right size. Finally, the waitress was in a better mood after she ate and by the end we had a chat about how cute her apron was, she said they came from thailand and were handmade. I like the relaxed vibe of the place and food is not pretentious and is not expensive (£25 in total). When I come back I will probably have the same because it was so good!

Very nice people, lovely tofu penang. If you are a vegetarian this is the best Thai in Chiswick IMHO and delivery is good too.

Great tasting food and best service we've had in town. We moved into the area last week and have…read morealready been here twice. I'm sure we'll be back here many more times in the future.

I've found my new go-to Thai! Sure, it's a bus/tube or car ride from my home but its worth it…read more Somtam is a small Thai restaurant in the middle of Askew Road, an area which seems to have become a tad gentrified. Next door, the Ginger Pig was holding an urban butchery course-very chic! But, back to Somtag. As I say, it's quite small and on weekends I would definitely book. The decor is solidly Thai but in an understated way. We were greeted by the owner who was politeness itself-he told us a little of how he came to own the place. We ordered drinks and tap water was brought for us and then constantly re-filled-very good touch. Service was generally excellent. We had: Thai fish cakes soft shelled crab (both to start) Massaman lamb curry green curry Pad Thai Both starters were really good. I love Thai fishcakes, though they can get on the greasy side. These were freshly made and non-greasy with clean flavours. The soft shelled crab was very reasonably priced at about £6 but we got 2-3 huge pieces. Not the best crab I've had but for the money they were absolutely fine. I was concerned ordering the lamb curry-I have a "thing" about lamb as it can be chewy/fatty. I needn't have worried-the lamb was slow cooked, lean and wonderfully tender. The sauce was rich and deep-a revelation. The green curry was less fireworks but very nice indeed with all the attendant flavours you would expect in a good Thai curry. Pad Thai-tick yet again-huge king prawns were buried deep in the noodles. We had no desert as we could hardly walk after this. If you live in the area or even if you don't give this friendly, very competent restaurant a bash. We will certainly return.
