In Spanish there is a saying: 'Al Cesar lo del Cesar' which means that you have to attribute to something or someone what they posses or are really good at. Well, hopefully there is a similar saying in English. A traditional pub to me, should do what it does best, serve traditional English grub with a bit of European fusion. The Old Pack Horse, does this (not very well, I might add) and serves Thai food? And is not good at all. My noodles were soggy and tepid, generally I've had better food, Thai food that is. Inside, the pub is much bigger than what it looks like from outside. There are lots of corners were any couple can have a bit of intimacy, or a large bar were any local can have a pint and read the paper. In conclusion, good for beer and a chat, not so good for Thai food.

    Reliable for fabulous Thai food

I love them for various reasons - open late on weekends, good music, generous seating, access to Thai food. All of Chiswick -local and work crowd seem to concentrate their intent on being here on weekends! You are lucky if you can grab a seat. It's an Old world charm meets Gen Y sort of place. A big advantage of Old Pack Horse is that it is located on the High Road and is a minute away from the tube station and bus stop. The Thai restaurant is amazing and serves generous portions.

Still, I followed a…read morefriend's recommendation to come down for a jazz open mic on a Friday night and I almost missed it. Once inside you are in pub heaven with a traditional looking lounge at the front, you almost walk into the bands as you enter the pub but there's plenty of seating to enjoy the music from a safe distance too. You pass through another section before the place opens up to the main bar at the back. It has quite a continental feel to it, and I can't believe I didn't immediately spot the massive vats at the back - I was too busy admiring the statues on the bar. And it's difficult not to be tempted by the selection of beers when in a brewery and I didn't regret my choice of Achtung. They also serve food and while the main menu is limited to sausage rolls and pies you can also order pizza or sushi which is delivered directly to your table by local takeaways. I'll definitely be back, a real gem.

Their Early Doors IPA was always likely to be my favourite, but I also enjoyed Dark Matter, 2 O'clock Ordinary and their Weissbier called Achtung! Good brewery. We stayed long enough to warrant some food. The burgers looked delicious, but we decided to go for 3 snacks for a tenner. This meant we could both have a snack of our choice and also share some chips. I enjoyed the luxury fish fingers! (No Captain Birdseye here!)

We got a table right by the window as we were there quite early in the evening thanks to the jet lag. I got a Fuller's Frontier and the Wild mushroom & spinach gnocchi with sage. My colleague enjoyed the burger. The food was all you'd expect of pub food and more - creamy and rich, thoroughly comforting, with lots of flavor. The space itself feels cozy, despite it being more spacious than most pubs I've visited. It was decorated for Christmas, making it feel even more inviting. Service was attentive enough - took orders but then let us enjoy the evening. It was a team of servers, rather than just one, and all were friendly throughout the experience.

Was then greeted by a waitress who said hello and then a bit further on by the Manager who said hello and asked if she could help me and did I want to eat. That for me is an indication of good service which did indeed follow. A large and imposing Fullers pub set on the banks of the river on the Chiswick side of the Thames. Very traditional inside with carpets and lots of dark wood and traditional chairs etc. Great views over the river and a seating area outside also. A great place to take your parents, grand parents, family, friends etc for a relaxing and no fuss sort of a meal in a traditional London pub. Go for a leisurely stroll along the short towpath and then head back for a pint and some scoff. Good food, good service and everything is shipshape here on the banks of the Thames. Not flash or grand but honest and pleasing. There are three pubs along this stretch and this one is easily the best.
