After leaving the Science Museum, we visited Thai Square for a quick lunch. This location is super small but the service was very fast and the workers were courteous. With just the two of us, we got a table right away but a larger group may have issues. The tables are close together, so if you want to have a private conversation, this is not the place. You will get to know the folks at the table beside you, whether you want to or not. We're pretty chill and fine with that though! We split an order of Shrimp Pad Thai and also had spring rolls. We do this to avoid leftovers or wasting food. The Pad Thai had lots of peanuts which gave it crunch. The spring rolls were piping hot, and I only wished I had more dipping sauce for them. London in general is more expensive than a lot of European cities, so lunch wasn't cheap, but it was about what we expected for the location. read more

Stopped by Thai Square on a rainy day in London, right next to the Natural History Museum. Unfortunately, the service matched the gloomy weather--cold and pretty unwelcoming. No one bothered to explain the menu, and when I asked if the fried rice could be made spicier, all they offered was some chili paste on the side. Not exactly what I was hoping for. I ordered the vegetarian jungle curry, but it was a letdown--no real texture or flavour, just kind of bland. On top of that, the prices were way too high for what you get. We stumbled on the place after the Natural History Museum because we were starving. We got the pad thai, drunken noodles, and green curry. I really liked my pad thai. It was really yummy and had a good amount of sauce, which is the way I like my pad thai. Apparently, the drunken noodles weren't really spicy because my friend was okay with the spice level. So don't expect it to be spicy if that's what you're looking for. The green curry was also eh. Nothing too special. This is one of those restaurants that have specific Asian characters and require some getting used to. I mean, the waiters are nice enough but their smiles and kindness are not immediately overwhelming in an industrialized, practiced way. It's more natural, subtle and genuine. And the food is as Thai as it comes, not the kind that is altered to cater to Western tastes. I love the prawn and noodle, done exactly right, with a particular inviting aroma. One thing to relieve those who cannot take much spice: the one pepper spicy level shown on the menu is actually pretty ok for an ordinary folk like me. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted with friendly service and given a table. The service remained prompt throughout my meal. I chose this restaurant for the large amount of vegetarian items, and I had the cashew tofu, which was very delicious. It was the right amount of spice and flavor. Its location right down the street from Natural History Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum made this the reason we stopped in between visiting those museums. We ordered the reasonably priced set lunch (£9.95) which consisted of a corn cake, a spring roll, some type of lemongrass-ginger Mushroom soup, steamed veggies in a brown gravy, steamed white rice, and chicken green curry. Overall, the meal was good and filling, though it didn't blow me away. The only complaint I had about the meal was that the soup (the first thing I tried) was so incredibly tart and the mixture of the acidity with the chili's and abundant ginger burned my throat. The judges obviously didn't have the soup I had: the classic chicken, mushroom in a coconut milk-infused broth. Listed with two peppers on the menu (signifying "spicy"; three peppers is the maximum), the soup had no heat. I'd be okay with that small failure to live up to promises, but the soup had no depth either. How difficult is it to make this soup? Come on. The portion size disappointed too, being served in a large ramekin. In all, no depth of flavor. No decent portion size. And no Singha beer (they only offer Chang). I had little hope for any decent restaurant being open at that hour, let alone a reasonably priced one in this high-end area. Thai Square was not only open, but friendly and fast. The price points were standard for London but not for this high-end area, so that was appreciated. I had filled up on free bites from the event before, so just got a beer (only one Thai beer available, boo) and an app for about £9. The flavors of everything were excellent. The green curry chicken was HOT even though they said medium spicy when I asked. They need to serve towels because I was sweating like crazy. I went to this restaurant for early dinner with my friends after our visit at the Natural History Museum. We were the first to arrive at 5:30pm so didn't have any problem finding a table in a small dining room on the ground floor. Large windows made the room look specious. The food was great but I guess it lacked the wow-factor. I liked the crispy corn cake appetizer the most out of everything I had that night. It was really crispy and juicy outside and filled with mashed corn kernels inside :) The pad thai wasn't served with a slice of lime and the dish tasted a little bland because of that. Tom kha hed (coconut mushroom soup), on the other hand, was plenty sour and delicious. We also felt the portion was a bit small. Had a very pleasant late lunch here. Despite it being busy they managed to fit us in on the upper floor and we had a nice view of South Kensington. Service was attentive. Had piping hot duck spring rolls and chicken skewers with a tasty peanut sauce. Then a sliced beef salad with quick a spice kick but plenty of flavour depth as well. With a great location near the Natural History Museum, V&A, etc., Thai Square can get quite busy, particularly on weekends and during tourist season. I'm not sure about the layout and decor inside, as I chose to dine al fresco when I went. The menu is quite extensive, with a nice variety of appetizers, soups, salads and main dishes made with either chicken, beef, lamb, duck or shrimp. There are also 2-pages full of vegetarian options. I was quite happy with the vegetarian appetizer sampler (delicious little corn cakes, tempura veggies, spring roll) and the Thom Ke Had soup. I wasn't too happy with the service though, which was quite slow. In spite of its fairly touristy location, Thai Square does have very good food at decent prices, but it's not really anything spectacular. read more

We had lunch here a couple of days ago and loved the food. Service was fast and courteous. But note that they have no children's menu or cups. We had the Thai iced teas and juices. We practically ordered everything veggie in their menu - veggie sampler platter, spring rolls. The platter had rolls, golden corn coins and tempura. The corn coins are not to be missed. The rolls were great too. We ordered all the 3 kinds of noodles (pad Thai, pad see-ew, and drunken noodles). The drunken noodles are tad spicy in a good bone-warming way, not super hot. The other 2 types of noodles were flavorful. We also ordered the green curry, tofu with cashews and tofu with ginger. I did feel that the tofu with ginger and tofu with cashews had the same sauce but different veggies on it. They felt a tad greasy. But the green curry was on point! Yum! Now, I've never had tofu like this before anywhere, and I mean it in a good way. Their tofu felt spongy and light. It was very unique and good. The service was good. This is a great location very close to the V&A. The interior is cozy, and although the place was quite busy around 8:00p on a Friday night, we were seated within five minutes. My friend and I shared the combination appetizer to start with spring rolls, chicken satay, etc. (nothing extraordinary). He ordered the aromatic duck in tamarind sauce, and I ordered a prawn and scallop dish. The prawns and scallops were spicy, delicious and enormous - much more than I could eat. I ended up eating more than my share of the duck in tamarind sauce, as it was irresistibly tender and sweet. The mango sorbet and Jasmine tea were also both lovely. The service here is a bit slow, though not obscenely so. I would highly recommend Thai Square if you're looking for a leisurely, delicious and reasonably priced meal in South Kensington. read more
