They do everything from keys (including "digital chip" key clones) to vast amounts of nuts and bolts, SAE and metric, tools, supplies, home/industrial hardware. They are not Grainger or Lee's. They are not Lowes or Menards. Their prices are sometimes high, but they don't sell cheap gear. I wished they'd sell lumber and plants, but maybe it's better that they don't. They get five stars for being the best HARDWARE store in the area. You don't have to buy a huge blister pack to get just one or two of an item. Their clerks know what they have, and it's a good idea to ask them. They sometimes have better alternatives in mind, and their selection is vast for the size store they operate; they can save you a lot of time, unlike the big box stores, where there are no real specialists except the Big Item sales people. I love Black Lumber. Love, love, love…read more The staff's great, and it's really convenient (just south of Hillside) for those of us who live in town. A lot of Black's business is from contractors, and that's how I started going here (a couple guys I know work with them). But they're pleasant to regular retail customers too, and they have a good selection for basic hardware needs, as well as lumber and other building materials. Black also does cabinetry and sells some appliances (like kitchen hoods). One thing to know is that Black is part of the Do It Best distribution network. Actually, my only complaint is related to that. I sometimes buy yard/garden supplies here and have been disappointed by crappy plastic imports from China on a couple of occasions. But Black was nice about a return I made, so I can't get too irritated. For the ladies out there, this is the most woman-friendly hardware place in town. Women work the floor sometimes. Also, the staff is nice to kids.

I used to go in there and load up on SO MUCH! Originally, I could count on your guaranteed low prices, because you would offer a price match plus another 10% off, or something to that effect. Then you learned how attractive the 11% rebate looked, and didn't worry so much about those low prices. In a lot of scenarios, you are the same price or a penny less than some places. I adjusted. I got used to the rebates and got as many as I could. But then... but then... you started tinkering with your selections in your secondary areas. Sure, I can count on you for paint and a lot of the big things. It's the little things that are killing me. Pet products. Let's start there. I used to get everything there. Dog food. Dog treats. Cat food. Cat treats! You did a big overhaul of your dog food. It didn't impress me. You have many shelves of (today very empty) dog treats, most of them Milk Bone, a brand I avoid. Your alternatives didn't impress me. Fine. Cat treats! I found out you carry the single one my cat will eat... except... it was also out of stock. Womp womp. I can't even get the cookies I used to get because you no longer carry the flavors I bought. I've tried. Your selection of dog treats and chews is worse than it used to be. Your prices have gotten to the point where anything i can buy somewhere else just isn't that much cheaper there. And for some reason I insist on not only visiting for the little things, I have to continually give you bad reviews over it. Your best qualities are that you have plenty of folks around to help, although it doesn't seem like as many. When it comes to major house projects, I can count on you for supplies. The down side is in some areas I simply can't find them because some of your layouts are so weird. Dear Menards..... I will be back. When I need something for my house or my lawn, I will be back. If I need something for my car, I will be back. But for everything else... I'll be going somewhere else. And if you're not gonna staff enough people to open a register with 5 people in line, take down that sign that promises you will.

Where it was gruesome, people are helpful, there's enough staff, their prices are average to insane-- which is normal these days. I don't mind going there. Kliendorfer's is still the best for hardware-- unbeatable. But for a lot of items in the home improvement and gardening areas, Lowes has become useful. I do not go to Menards. No way. Too much shoddy products in the lumber yard.

Their stores have been rearranged lately but I am learning the layout and the staff has been helpful asking me if I need help finding something before I have to ask on multiple visits. I have always liked that about Lowe's. Lowe's does a good job keeping their stores clean and items out of the aisles so you can navigate with the large carts. I also love the Minute Key Kiosks! They are automated key copying machines and I have never had one fail on me so far after having a lot of keys copied.
