Well, I had a blast. This place is enormous. And, they have TONS of really great green stuff. The seed selection is varietal. If you're growing from seed, you should be able to fine *something* to help you get started here. Pots, fertilizer, soil, tools, etc. are all readily available and reasonably priced. If you don't have the patience or the inclination for starting from seed, there are plenty of seedlings available. Personally, I was impressed by the chocolate mint and culinary lavender. Even though I first visited Mays Greenhouse on a cold February day, I was delighted with the better-than-usual selection of seeds and gardening supplies. We went there today looking for some flowering trees. we were greeted by a young man who we found out was the maintenance man, he was so kind, helpful and even funny. He called for someone who came in just seconds, and the lady was so helpful and knew all about the trees we were looking for. After we purchased our trees, we spent an hour just walking around looking at all that they have. We're going back in the morning with the truck to pick up our trees and we decided to buy a few plants. Wow! Beautiful hanging baskets. Large selection of a tad high price point shrubs. but I always always prefer local over big stores. The go to is the huge variety of good outdoor lifelong furniture, we basically love being outdoors and they have the variety in colors, styles and prices are best in the state. Extra friendly staff. Not cheap. Good quality, incomparable selection. From veggies through house plants to supplies to exotics, it's all there. It's not discount, not grown in a hothouse in Alabama. Most things are locally sourced. Garden veggies are a good value here, and there are a wide variety of them with a good selection. Look for disease resistance and healthy plants. Be also realistic about what you can do in your garden. House plants are also wonderful, but know what you're doing if you want to keep them alive. Plants are not unlike pets; they need feeding and yes, they do poop. They need water and protection. All this said, there are lots of instructions with most plants to give you the details. Almost nothing prevents death from freezing, so be realistic about that fact, too. Yeah, go here. Avoid the pop-ups. Support local business. read more

I can't believe that I have lived in this area for almost 10 years before I walked into this establishment! I am an avid gardener almost to the point of a hobby far. My wife focused on the flowering plants and I focused on the veggies. The prices are way less than what you'd pay at the local large box stores, by a long shot. And they have a wonderful variety to choose from. I would normally start my seeds in March on seed mats and grow lights. Not anymore after visiting here. It's more cost effective to get the plants I need here without the worry of tending to germinating plants. After I made my selection I just wandered around marvelling at the selection. We made our first purchase from Mays Greenhouse last weekend. We found a very pretty Japanese Beautyberry bush and are delighted to see it enhancing our front yard landscape now 3 days later. We have every reason to believe it will grow and prosper as it looks very healthy. We'd never seen this type of bush before, and we're excited to see it flourish through all the seasons. Mays is a large greenhouse and plant center on the south side of Bloomington. It stretches out for about the length of a city block along old route 37. The variety they offer is extensive, everything is well organized and neatly kept, and the quality of their plants and trees appears to be very good. We walked through each area and greenhouse and enjoyed seeing everything from water lilies to fruit trees. We're new to the area, so we learned about plants indigenous to Indiana just by looking around. We didn't ask for any special service, but we were asked twice if we needed assistance. Prices seemed reasonable for a small garden center, the advantages being the opportunity for knowledgeable assistance and assurance of good quality. I would recommend Mays for your gardening needs or simply to enjoy learning about different types of plants -- particularly those best grown in the south central Indiana area. read more

Staff is knowledgeable. Their stock rotates frequently. Beautiful ceramic pots to make your plant a statement piece in your home. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a rare plant to take home. Larger plants are more expensive but some are great deals for how slow the plants in question may grow! read more

I absolutely fell in love with Mays on my last visit to Bloomington! They have a large variety of indoor and outdoor plants, as well as planting tools, containers, etc. that were all very well organized. Each section is clearly labeled to make shopping easy. I didn't have to search long to find the "houseplants" tent or anything else. There were TONS of planters available in whatever size or style your heart desires. And most everything was set at a very reasonable price. Look for the clearance section, which has discounted items that have been slightly cracked or chipped. Most of which were still in pretty good condition, and 50% off! I walked out with about 5 more plant babies and several new pots. That is to say, my heart was happy and I will definitely be back next time I trek to Bloom! read more

May's Greenhouse gave me a list of plants that they sell that are toxic to pets. I very carefully selected plants that were not on this list. I asked two employees if they were sure the plants were safe. After a $500 vet trip, my cat not eating and vomiting for two days, I come to find out the plant is quite toxic to cats, according to poison control. I asked them to add the plant to their toxic plant list and they proceeded to argue with me about it, and tell me that there wasn't a general consensus that the plant is toxic, even though everything I've read says that it clearly is toxic. read more
