Last night, I went to one of the big box stores to try and replace a pair of screws. It took me five minutes to find an employee, ten for them to call another, and fifteen for them to both give up. Today, I went here, and while I forgot to set a stopwatch, the entire round trip took less time. And I got my screws. Needless to say, I'll be coming here instead from now on. read more

Wonderful and knowledgeable employees who know their products. I also got great advice on how to quickly get rid of my poison ivy rashes. Turns out humans can also use Dawn dish soap to get rid of the poison ivy oil that is the cause of those nasty, itchy rashes. read more

You will be followed and spied on in this store, let the buyer beware of these narcissistic people. Me and two teens walked in and were looking around. (I needed a piece for my faucet in the bathroom for my new washer) We started being followed around. Instead of asking us if we needed help, I started noticing that someone was standing at the end of the isle and all you could see was an eye looking at you because the rest of that person was being hidden behind some merchandise or something. Instead of asking us how they could help us, they were spying on us trying to catch us doing something wrong. These people aren't very nice. Notice their sign in front entrance says "FREE RIDE IN POLICE CAR TO POLICE STATION IF YOU STEAL FROM US" (You see that as you pull up in your car) They don't have a welcome friends and neighbors sign, but a sign that threatens you. If they are that worried, why don't they have cameras all around, or plain clothed policemen? This narcissistic business pretends to care, but they really don't. Again, they are the only hardware store on the East side of Bloomington. So they can get by with mistreating customers. They also are not corporate and they can write their own rules. (A person (owner) I talked to years ago, said they fought against having to go that way, so they could run this business like they wanted. Well, they are, and I'm not the only one who has complained about how they treat their customers. Someone please move a few hardware stores on the East side so that this place will change their tune or go out of business. They don't have a threatening sign out front when you pull up. And they really care about you and take the time to help. Wow, first negative customer service experience I've had here and it was bad. Assistant manger (male, young) talked right over me (female, senior), cut me off, didn't smile or say thank you, and was generally a big turnoff, as in I will avoid him in future. There is a phrase "if you can't say anything nice,don't say anything at all". So putting negativity aside I'll begin with a question instead. Has customer service become a thing of the past? I can remember a time not so long ago when a customer made a large ticket purchase (e.g. refrigerator), the purchase was delivered to the home, hooked up, made sure the appliance was working properly, and most importantly the technician made sure the customer was happy before leaving the home. In this situation the "big box" store delivery team came unprepared to make the installation. After two days of trying to get a plumber to help finish the job, I went to Bloomington Hardware. Within minutes their knowledgeable staff was able to provide parts needed to complete the installation that I had already paid for with the "big box" store. From my experience with Bloomington Hardware, customer service is very much alive and well. read more

I've gone here a couple of times and have found what I needed. I think it's locally owned, and if it's not, it has a local small-town feel (and let's face it, Bloomington is a pretty small town, especially in the summer sans students). The store is technically a True Value, which means it's one of many places where I've recently acquired a loyalty card. I recommend it for the $5 off next purchase coupon you'll likely get upon sign up, as long as you don't mind giving some of your personal information. The lady who signed me up for the loyalty card was very nice, as was the person who helped me find the picture hooks I needed. My only issue with the place was that I came at a seemingly busy time, and it was a little bit tricky to find help. I walked through the store and couldn't find anyone, but then I saw an area with a window in the back where there were a few staff people. (hint: go there if you need help and can't find it). The people there were able to direct me to the aisle I needed, and they checked on me once they came on the floor. Maybe it was a shift change. The other time I came there was someone near the front door asking if we needed help. I didn't that time - was just looking for a bucket - but that was welcoming and helpful. read more

A single star for this store. The hardware outlet is poorly stocked with do-it-yourself homeowner products. I recommend that you take a trip down to Kliendorfer's Hardware for a real hardware store experience. Or, if you're on the East side of Bloomington, walk over to Target. Target has everything you need at lower prices. Lowes, Walmart, Menards and the above mentioned Kliendorfers have everything you need. Your gas costs are minuscule compared to the sky high prices you will find at Bloomington Hardware. Professional old-school builders go to Kliendorfers first for hard to find equipment. read more

Moved to the east side, and while it may be a bit pricier, it is convenient and the customer service is greatly appreciated. No matter how many times I've been there wandering the aisles clueless, I have been approached by staff for assistance. I appreciate it and the friendly service. Bloomington Hardware excels at customer service. I shop here often and rarely spend more then a moment in the store before someone asks if I need help. The employees are all knowledgeable about home repair and have frequently offered me great advice in terms of both products and suggestions on how to get the job done. Well the store doesn't have everything, it has most of what I need, and I appreciate not having to wander around a huge warehouse of the store spending extra time looking for what I need. They also have a great selection of canning supplies as well as garden accessories. read more

A really great small hardware store to use when you need just a couple of things here and there. Sure Lowe's has more selection, and sure Menard's might be cheaper, but the staff here is always ready to help with anything and are as friendly as can be. The prices may not be the absolute lowest, but they're always reasonable. If you're looking for something very unusual, Kleindorfer's is a better bet, but the vast majority of the time, Bloomington Hardware is fine. read more

They made me some keys. They didn't work so went back with only one key having given the others out. The gent ran the key I had through the machine, Great. But wouldn't replace the other two. I paid $7.50 for three keys. I could have ran and found the other 2 in a hour or two. Or could have paid $5.00 for two more or they could have cut me two more . There cost for a key is like a nickel. I'd bet 10 cent they lost a customer today. read more

Today was my fourth and last visit to this store. I have never been greeted or acknowledged in any way on my visits. Never been offered assistance. Have always been ignored. On the positive side, the store is well stocked, but so is Lowe's and Menards. I've had nothing but great experiences at these stores, and am re-thinking my "buy local" policy. read more

I love supporting local businesses. Sales staff here is always willing to help even if they aren't the most knowledgeable. The guy with the long grey hair is their biggest asset. However, the negatives have left a bad taste in my mouth and I will probably not go back for a while, if at all. The management are impatient and impolite. Saturday, Dec.6 2014, 3:15 PM. Store doors locked: sign says "closed for Holiday party." A steady stream of cars and pedestrians moves through as people try the locked doors and go away cursing (or otherwise disappointed). Boneheaded move, Bloomington Hardware! Saturday afternoon is the one time in the week when people expect the hardware to be open -- and it might well be the only time when working people can run their errands and do their fixit chores. I really want to like this business, but my last few visits have been memorably vexatious. Could they do anything more to alienate their customers? I don't know: seems like they're trying hard to do just that. Enough, I say! Next time I'll go to Lowe's first, and save myself the aggravation. read more

Lots of offbeat, useful stuff that's hard to find elsewhere. Unfortunately hard to find as well in this store's at-times nonsensical shelving system, and some of the "customer service" people are downright bizarre. Beware the men in beards. I asked one a routine question about whether they carry de-icers, and he told me they were all sold out with the dire gravitas of when the peace accords broke down at Kosovo. read more
