We were looking for a casual counter-service spot to meet up with cousins before a celebration of life (RIP Steve), and from the outside this looked like a decent option. So we decided to scope it out, and once we got inside we were blown away! The employee at the counter said they only have one coffee (iced Vietnamese) but lots of good mocktails and beverages in the cooler. Friendly and honest! We peeped the cooler and it was full of super interesting drinks. And indeed, the mocktail menu was great. Zests and tonics and coolers and sparklers. Next to the cooler is a small retail area with an eclectic and very smart selection of curated goods, including: chili crisp; tinned fish; griddle pans; handmade Easter fudge; books about auras and autism and edibles and pizza; ultra soft scarves; Rap Snacks ramen; and lunar phase art pieces. But even more impressive than all of that is the food. Among our group of cousins etc, we ordered both banh mi sandwiches, the meatloaf sandwich, the bulgogi cheesesteak sandwich, the banh mi fries, and the chicken pho. Plus the Vietnamese iced coffee and one cocktail (Sunset Spritz). Without exception, they were delicious! My favorite was the meatloaf sandwich, which came on perfectly-griddled pillowy sourdough, and had a great balance of sweet-tangy masaman glaze, mayo, and kimchee pimento cheese. This place was incredible! I left with 2 extra orders of the pork belly baos because holy cow. The flavor, the texture, the mouth watering combination of everything was immaculate. The fluffy bao was delightful and such an amazing experience in my mouth. I loved every single bite and ate way too many of these but I just couldn't stop. They were very pleasing and I have told coworkers about how amazing they were. I also enjoyed the furikake fries but the winner was absolutely the pork belly baos. Quite a lot of cost for a small plate of fried chicken wings. Which we had to order as they were out of the first four things we tried to order. Even though we were the only people, we were forced to go to the counter to place our order! Again, we were the sole customers and the staff insisted on giving us a TABLE NUMBER in order to find us to serve our order. From time of order to delivery of food; 45 minutes. Portions are minuscules, barely enough for a snack. Pork Hum Bao is okay but tiny. Pork and rice dish arrived 12 minutes AFTER the Hum Bao! Again, we were the only customers,it seemed odd that our dishes were not delivered at the same time. Six people on staff, cannot understand how FARE MARKET continues to operate, If you are truly hungry; GO ANYWHERE ELSE, several restaurants are near Freeland and will certainly provide faster service. read more

You order at the counter from a friendly and knowledgeable cashier, and can also order cocktails or pick from the sizable and creatively curated cold storage shelf of alcoholic and NA beverages. We ordered to go as we had our dogs with us and got a tofu banh mi within 15 minutes. The banh mi was everything a banh mi should be. French bread was crispy and soft at the right time. Tofu was also crispy and soft (I'm sending a theme?) and well seasoned - we got the sesame tamari time. I loved the addition of a mushroom pate - with most veggie banh mis you miss that pate texture so it was great to have it here. A friend and I stopped by here while visiting the area. So I was told this was a pan Asian place. I wasn't feeling too hungry so I settled for something light. I ended up having the calamari, spam musubi, and basil lemonade. The lemonade has a unique flavor, I'm not sure what to think of it, but I didn't hate it. For someone who was feeling for something light, both the calamari and musubi did it for me. The calamari was served like fish sticks with spicy sauce and remoulade sauce. I preferred the latter over the former. I liked the simple plain yet modern vibe of this place. There were some cute merch available. Service was pretty decent. Staff was generally friendly. This is truly a unique and worthwhile addition to Whidbey and Freeland. It has some work to do still. The staff is pretty much lovely charming young local ladies that were great to deal with and engage. I'll leave out the details but it was a pleasant experience in general. I ordered the beef pho and my wife ordered the vermicelli bowl. The v bowl was pretty good, I tried the meat, and it was fairly standard to what we see in highly rated Viet places we frequent. The meat however is chopped up in little bits during the "grill" process which might signal that they pan fry it instead? Flavor still pretty good but not like the authentic Vietnamese run places. The pho is only offered here with a sliced brisket. I have pho rules. I do not eat pho at places that do other cuisines like teriyaki etc and I do not eat pho at places that don't have the full pho meat available like tripe, tendon, and bo vien etc. I broke my rules here so we could try it finally on a gloomy Sunday brunch. Glad we did but it's just not the same as a full on Pho restaurant. Noodles overcooked, broth not really developed or flavorful and could use more aromatics and maybe started earlier? Given the typical diners on the island it will likely stay the same. But if they want to be a standard pho restaurant they will need to develop a more flavorful broth, not overcook the rice noodles and offer more authentic cuts of beef. There's nothing like a great broth with some soft stewed tendon and a variety of beef cuts! I think the owner might be Vietnamese but it's generally pho by white people for white people. If I lived on the island more than weekends I would be back more. read more

My sandwich was fine, I had the gyro. My wife ordered the chicken satay with peanut sauce. Not only did her meal come out last, other tables got their food long before she did. When her food did finally arrive only half of her order came out. The peanut sauce was unusual. Served very cold and had a different flavor than other peanut sauces we have had. After she choked the first chicken tender down, the other one arrived. It should be pointed out that tender refers to the cut, not the condition. The chicken was very tough. I've heard a lot of people mention this while eating. Also. Because I love this place and want it to stick around, I gotta bring up the veggie pho broth. The original recipe was delicious. Awhile back it changed to a darker broth and it's inedibly salty (and I'm a salty girl!), overwhleming any other flavors in it. Very expensive considering what I'm used to from my favorite go to spot on Lake City Way. At first I wasn't impressed with the broth. Seemed to be a bit on the light side of flavor. I dumped all my veggies and nuked the broth to make it super hot. Added in my hoyson sauce and Sriracha sauce. Mixed it all up and by the time I finished my noodles...the broth took on a whole new flavor. And in a very good way. For the cost...I'd be hesitant to go back. But for the flavor...yes. Sorry...but Lake City Way is the definition for me. Wish they would have had more dishes. Like some Bun noodles. I don't know how to spell it properly, but with the pork chunks and fried spring rolls. We also had the iced coffee which felt like it was instant. Sweetened condensed milk was a bit short if probably non existent. Its not a complete or even partial loss folks. Because as I said before...yes I'd go back. My hubby enjoys the Pho, but to be fair it's not a great as going to the mainland, but best on the Island as it's the only one! Wish they had a simple meatball Pho for my kid. Was needing an afternoon snack before heading out to Fort Casey and found Fare Market. Ordered some fresh rolls with shrimp- ran me about $10 pre tax -and they were divine! Service was quick and the staff were friendly. I appreciated the large portion size of the fresh roll, it was packed with fresh vegetables, rice noodles, and jumbo shrimp! When you make the long trek from the city to whidbey island you're going to be hungry, tired, and looking for a place to feel comfortable with quality food and that is where Fare Market shines. Upon entering, you're welcomed into an open floor space of cleanliness and modern comfort with some authentic Vietnamese home cookings with all the fixings. The decor and atmosphere gets you to stay while the food makes you want to come back for more. On my visit I ordered the brisket pho, grilled pork banh mi, and tofu summer rolls. All the flavors and tastes exceeded my expectations for what I can get on an island miles away from the city. The pho broth was rich with authentic Vietnamese flavors from home and the brisket was soft, tender, and quality meat. The banh mi has a fantastic taste of sweet and salty marinated pork that rests in between a great soft yet crispy French bread and combined with the quality of fresh veggies, house made mayo makes this one of the best sandwiches on this island. Lastly the tofu rolls were packed full of noodles and veggies that it could be a meal on their own as they are paired with a delicious house made peanut hoisin dipping sauce. Fare Market - Brisket pho, tofu summer rolls and a poor angle of end delicious pork banh mi - Vietnamese Near Me - Freeland, Washington

First of all I want to start off and say if you're stopping to eat here you absolutely need to get the Honey Garlic Bao with Pork Belly! The Bao was so soft and fluffy combined with the smoky flavor of the tender pork belly topped with kimchi and crispy shallots was one of the best things I've gotten from a restaurant in a very long time. Unfortunately, the rest of the food was not on the same level, actually slightly better than mediocre so that's why Fare Market earned a 4 star for me. They have super welcoming staff and a tucked away restaurant that's got plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It is a little more spendy here, as the 3 items my wife and I got totaled about $45. And based off the serving sizes of the dishes and how much we paid, I was expecting the flavor and overall quality of the food to make up for it. The Beef Pho we got was very underwhelming flavor-wise, as the broth was nowhere near as rich and flavorful as you'd hope to get from a traditional Vietnamese Pho. The noodles were just alright and the beef itself nothing to write home about. Slightly disappointing as I am an avid Pho lover and was excited to try if from this restaurant. The Shrimp Summer rolls were also a reason the rating got taken down to a 4 star. The rolls were pretty much filled with 85% lettuce, and the rest being shrimp and some other vegetables in the middle. On the menu it was listed as having rice noodles in the recipe but I didn't receive any in mine. Overall I'd rate this a 7 out of 10, but if I hadn't gotten those amazingly delicious Bao then I could see my review going under a 5 out of 10. read more

We have been here a number of times and were excited to come back. This time we shared the beef pho, a lemon grass tofu bun and some cauliflower poppers. The pho was very oily and lacked any depth of flavor as you would get with the clear fragrant broth of a good pho. By the way, my 9-year old daughter loved it. The bun used fresh veggies, but the nuoc mam dressing lacked the pungent and tangy flavors of fish sauce and citrus. It also seemed oily. The fried cauliflower was good with a ranch and blue cheese dressing. Not sure how it fit into the Asian fusion theme, but it was good and different. read more

We like this newish local place, so far we've been there five times. We like the pho, the bahn mi fries (absolutely delicious!) and I always get the fresh spring rolls with generous portion of peanut sauce dip. Taco Tuesdays are delicious too. It's a nice place to meet friends or have a meeting or go out with family; ordering is simple, pay at the counter, then they bring you the food to your table. Decor is fashionable and clean. My friend Cormac McCarthy's paintings grace the walls. There's some cute house wares like scented candles for sale, these are a little pricey for me. But the food is worth the price. We sometimes sit at the outside tables with our dog - wish there were more tables on the Llyna's garden side, not only the parking lot side. (Dogs are not allowed inside. ) We've eaten at various restaurants in this location since 2000. It was a teriyaki hawaiian place called Katee's, then something else I forgot, then Charmers, now Fare Market is one of our favorites. I recommend this place to visitors. read more
