Air conditioning was not working in my car. Two mechanics had told me I needed to take it to a dealer, which I was hoping to avoid. Took it to Far East and they said they were confident they could fix it. They ran some tests and, after charging me a couple hundred for the diagnostic they gave me an estimate of over $8000. So I broke down and took it to a Toyota dealer who repaired it for $1850. The part that really left a bad taste in my mouth was that the guy at Far East suggested that if I didn't want to repair it for $8000 I should go trade it in at a dealership and not tell them about the a/c problem. Took my car in for a state safety inspection, and they said they had a state inspector. That was a lie. They took the car to Takoma Oldtown Auto Service for the inspection (who are great btw, go there instead) and upcharged me. Additionally they drilled holes in my cars fog lights without asking me, they stated it was to vent moisture inside the housing but I never saw any. They drilled straight through the lens, not even through the side of the housing, and didn't even bother to reattach the housing to the bumper. My car failed safety inspection at Takoma Oldtown Auto in part because of the holes in the fog light housing, my guess is Far East Motors were trying to create some billable repairs for themselves. I want to reiterate, I went in for a safety inspection and did not authorize any work on my car and they drilled holes in my fog lights and took it to a different mechanic for the inspection! I took my car to Pinecrest Shell in Annandale for the repairs needed to pass inspection (they have been working on my family's cars for years, can't recommend them enough), and I will be skipping the middleman and taking my car to Takoma Oldtown Auto for the re-inspection. I will not be going back to Far East ever, the cat in the office was cute though. read more

We have been taking our cars to Far East Motors for over 10 years. They are responsive and courteous. They throughly check over the vehicle and note any issues that they see forming before they lead a major brake down. The pricing and estimates are very transparent, and the customer always has the power to approve or turn down any recommended service items that are found. The mechanics will give you an honest assessment of a repair as something very important "critical for safety," vs "we just noticed this wear you probably want to keep an eye on it, since it may need replacing in the future," to "according to the manufacturer, this is the recommend service to be performed on your vehicle at around xx,xxx number of miles, you can do it now or the next time you come in for a oil change." It is entirely up to the customer what services are performed. The pricing always seems fair and comparable for the market, keep in mind the DC area is an expensive market in general. They are not the cheapest, and they are by far not the most expensive mechanics I've come across, but the important thing to know is that they do great, reliable work, and they get the bottom of any issue with your vehicle. Example: I had terrible experiences at the dealer and at another local auto repair shop, neither of who could fix a cooling system issue on my mini-van. We were told to do costly repairs by both teams, and it never fixed the problem we came in for which was the smell of burning coolant and coolant level dropping in the reservoir. Far East was able to work with us to find the problem that no one else could figure out. It turned out to be a small crack in the coolant line near the firewall, that was only detectible when the engine was cold. So, Far East repaired the issue that had plagued us for years and we have been so happy with their service, and finally having a solution that worked! Our family likes to run our vehicles for as long as we can 12+ years, so we appreciate having an honest mechanic's assessment of the condition of the car, and what potential repairs we might see coming down the road in the future. I can't recommend more highly Far East Motors, and the owner, John stands behind their work, they will work with you to get your car repaired to your satisfaction. read more

TLDR; Honest people, the occasional lazy mechanic. Based on their positive reviews, I sent a friend to get a pre-purchase inspection at this shop. The shop came back with a handful of recommendations, all of them valid. However, they missed a couple of items that wound up costing literal thousands to fix on a $4000 car. First item missed was rear brakes, one of which was metal to metal. The second was uneven tire wear that resulted in needing a new tire+$150 alignment to pass Maryland inspection, AND then they said it also needed front struts+another $150 alignment to fully fix (quoted over $1000 all in for front struts originally). All said and done, if addressed at this shop, it would've cost over a 1/3rd, almost 1/2, of what the car cost to fix problems that should've been caught in the first place. I want to be fair and balanced here, so I'll say that Paul, the head service writer, was incredibly honest about the shortcomings of the inspection, and even helped some with the price to repair the rear drum brakes. He also offered a deal with the struts as well. This is NOT an unreasonable shop, and I'm thankful that Paul was an honest person, which is increasingly rare. All that to say, this may be a great shop for routine service, and maybe even for some minor repairs. But if you need inspections, or larger detail-oriented work, find a different shop with a better labor rate and a more attentive mechanic. read more

I went and was greeted by a man named Watchman who said he would take care of my car and do a brake consultation....2 hours later he emailed me with a quote including $1000 in labor and $500 in parts!! This was for brake pads, resurfacing rotors, a brake fluid flush and a battery!!! I told this man I would never pay that much for brake service and that he was ripping me off! I will never go back there again. Be careful if you're a woman or in knowledgeable about cars because they will definitely try to rip you off!! They need to be reported to the BBB. Scammers for sure. I took my car at the beginning of January for an engine light, mechanic told me the diagnostics showed code PO305 engine misfire as well as cylinder 5. I was told a leak-down test was performed and my spark plugs were good and it passed the test, I was told they were going to clean the parts in my engine and do an oil change as well. I was also told it could be a head gasket issue but wasn't sure. I was given my car back after service and repair and my car broke down. I wasn't able to start up one morning after it was cold overnight. it was towed to them for service and I was told it was a dead battery that was replaced and I got my car back. After getting my car back the engine light came back on and would shake at the beginning of its starting up. I had to get my car towed for a second time, I was told they would cover my towing and the same PO305 code was diagnosed. I was told coolant fluid had leaked inside cylinder 5, the engine had to be removed to inspect the damage. This work took 1 month of false expectations, I was told I was getting my vehicle back and it kept pushing further. In the end, I was stuck with the towing fee, car rental, and disappointment. To make things worse when I did get my car back after 1 month they didn't connect a hose and I had coolant fluid leak all under my hood causing my car to overheat. There was also a loose bolt under my hood when I opened it I REFUSE to take my car back to an unreliable shop. read more

I've had bad experiences with car mechanics in the past, and I have to admit I'm afraid every single one is making up service my car needs to try to get more money out of me. But the last few times I've taken my car to Far East, it's been more than a fear. I started taking my Mazda 3 there because it was super convenient, since I live in downtown Silver Spring. And the particular services I'd called about were cheaper than Congressional Motors in Rockville, the Mazda dealer I'd been going to. I got a variety of services done there over about two years, but then I started to feel funny about things. There was the debacular parking situation along Selim Road, which required me to sometimes circle for parking, or park in questionable street spots. There was the time that I dropped my car off for service on a Saturday and they called me saying that car was done and I had to pick it up immediately because they were leaving, or I'd have to wait until Monday to get it. There wasn't even enough time for me to walk there -- they had to lock my keys in the car so I could go over with my spare keys. But mostly it was because the prices for routine maintenance were ridiculous. Even for an oil change they're more than the Mazda dealer, and the routine mileage service is MUCH more expensive at Far East, because the dealer does some routine mileage service and an inspection, and then only charges you for what you need. So I started going back to the dealer for routine maintenance, and was much happier about things. I did go back to Far East for new tires, though, because the price was better, and I figured, who can screw up tires? And that ended up being the final straw. You see, the last time I went to the dealer for an oil change and they did the full car inspection (free at the dealer -- Far East charges for this), they found that my tires were mounted backwards. The tread on the tires is directional, and it was going in the wrong direction. So, although I thought I was done with Far East, I found myself going back to get the tires fixed. They did that, and then called back with other work that supposedly needed to be done. I needed new wiper blades (which I knew). But they also claimed I needed a new battery, and I probably would have purchased one if I hadn't known any better. But I did, because: 1. They said I needed a new battery after I took it in in Feb. 2010 after the week of two blizzards. But I was not buying that, because the car had just sat outside through two blizzards, and then I'd started it up and driven it five minutes over to Far East, which meant it'd had no chance to charge up. This was in fact the SAME battery from back then, and it's always started absolutely fine, even after sitting for more than a week, and in temperatures in the teens. 2. More scientifically, the Mazda dealer had only three weeks ago done their full inspection on the car and rated the battery in good condition. So who am I going to believe, the mechanic that can't even put tires on right? Or the dealer? The answer to that question is probably pretty clear. On the positive side, I think that costumer service is good and I'm happy with routine-related services (oil change, brake fluid, etc). On the negative side, I would not recommend anybody to do any body repairs there. A minor trim repair that you would expect a professional to easily fix was done very poorly, without attention to detail and resulted in the trim being in worst condition (in a couple days) than when I brought it in. came here about two months ago to get my tire pressure checked because it was leaking air really fast. They apparently found a "nail" in the tire and plugged it up for me. I went on vacation for a month so I didn't drive the car. When I came back and drove on it, the tire pressure went down again from the same tire. I didn't pay too much attention but today I decided to take my car back to get it checked. Apparently they found "two new things" that were stuck in my tires that are causing it which costed me $55 dollars for each tire. I ended up paying $110 for a staple sized metal piece they found in my tire. I had waited for two hours for them to do this. Let's not forget to mention, last time I paid near $970 for just rotor replacements, oil change, and tire plug. I waited for 5 hours. Most of the time they were just waiting for my parts to come in then I got charged $500 for labor. I don't understand how this place gets so many good reviews, pretty sure they're paid or something or they write reviews for themselves. This place is so overpriced and they ask you to do so much extra stuff for your car. I don't think I'll ever be coming back. I came to get a car inspection and had a pleasant experience the first time. I was told by the owner, Mr. Moser, that my rear shocks were leaking but that everything else looked great. Their prices were too high for my law student budget so I went elsewhere to get the issue fixed. I came back (granted over a month later but with nothing new except the issue I got fixed) and I was given a list of other issues - this time by the manager -(minor things like a small crack in the windshield and a rear reflector broken). Mind you, these "issues" were all there the first time I took it but they were not pointed out. Now they refuse to pass it because of these two things that were present the first time I brought the car in. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed with this. This business is a sham. They charged me $800+ to repair my brakes and at best did nothing. The brakes did not work at all. I asked them to look at it again and they added brake fluid. Idiots!! I also requested to repair my tire and it was still flat they just put air in it. They did not bleed the brakes, install the master cylinder correctly, and basically for all intense purposes shammed me. If I could discourage you from going to this business I would. Horrible Place!!! I think it is safe to say that I am not the only one that wishes they could find an honest mechanic that they can patron often and not worry about being ripped off, Far East Motors will not fill that void for you. My girlfriend took our car here for the dreaded MD state inspection they said we needed $2,645 dollars in repairs, ridiculous. Because I hate feeling like I am being ripped off, I hope you read these prices to give yourself a chance to call around (this is for a 2005 hyundai): -Replace left front strut: $320 -Replace both arm bushings: $750 -Reconnect parking brake: $45 -Replace tag lights: $40 -Battery secure handle: $30 (it was there it just needed to be screwed down) -Headlight restoration: $120 -Replace windshield: $300 (nothing was wrong with it, will circle back to this later) -Remove tint: $160 -Replace rear motor mount: $260 -Replace both front axles: $600 -Re-inspection: $20 (if they do repairs) Needless to say, I went elsewhere and my girlfriend and I were extremely stressed. I took the list else where (K&W please read review for them, they are great) did all of the above for less than $1600 and guess what, I did not need my windshield replaced and I am happy to say I passed the state inspection. I don't know if they did this because my girlfriend went or if they do this all of the time. I will never go to this place again. It is one thing to charge exorbitant amounts of money for repairs but to try and force people to get things fixed that are fine is a form of theft and I will never go down the street this shop sits on. There is nothing they can do to rectify this wrong and make me want to go there, again. Even if they say there was one person who got it wrong or some excuse, it is inexcusable, this is a lot of money people have to pay and I highly doubt they would have refunded my money if I went elsewhere and found out they were charging, too much. She's been taking her Acuras here through the years and so I started taking my Baby Bear Honda here (I've been stuck at the Baby Bear level for way too long - time for an upgrade). They are also quick and efficient, no run around. Drop it off Thursday morn, and you will be getting it back Thur evening. Good Stuff. It's also convenient cause it's walking distance to the SS metro so you can still get to work with no hassle. If you're really feeling lazy, they can drive you there as well. It's located on Selim Road. Selim is the name of the horse that Elizabeth Blair was riding when she was thrown off due to being distracted by reading a love letter. My mother looked on the internet for repair places near our house in Takoma Park. By chance we ended up at Far East Motors. It is a small shop but far exceeded any of my expectations. I went with my mother to make sure that they did not over charge her or try and sucker her into any services she did not need. I have saved myself money many times by throwing out the hidden automotive knowledge I have. I now feel guilty for even thinking they would do anything like this. Watchman is the man who greeted us and even showed us the defective parts from her car. (She was one pot hole away from a fatal crash). He was the most knowledgeable repair man I have ever met. He explained every expense and even let us know he did not perform the "recommended service" that most places do (and then charge you for when they are not an immediate issue). I've been taking my 1997 Honda Accord to Far East for a couple of years. They've worked on the exhaust pipe and muffler, a series of oil leaks in the engine area, the ignition electrical wiring, oxygen sensor replacement, and other odds and ends. The only time I had an issue with their repairs was when the timing belt got replaced. It continued leaking after the work was done so they redid the work under warranty. Since then, I've never had any other concerns. I was most impressed when Far East quickly diagnosed why my car turned off while driving. The other shop had no interest in putting in the effort to find the problem and seemed nonplussed to send me back out on the road in car that was extremely unsafe to drive. Overall, I've found Far East to be accommodating, transparent, and just generally easy to work with. I've never felt that I was being taken advantage of or misled. In the few instances where the quoted prices seemed high - or I questioned the recommended repairs - Far East was willing to adjust the costs or explain the service in a helpful way. When I needed a car to get to a job interview, Jon lent me one from the shop. If I need a ride to the metro after dropping my car off, Paul is always willing to clean off his passenger seat. And Watchmen never makes me feel bad for always being late to drop off/pick up my car. Another reviewer mentioned parking as an issue but it hasn't been for me. If I take the car in during busy times, Watchmen will feed the meter for me. I've used mechanics at everything from major chains, shops that don't speak English and prefer customers to bring their own parts, to gas stations. When all is said and done, I trust that as long as I'm willing to continue investing in a car that has 200K+ miles on it, Far East will be the place to spend my money. Moreover, far east motors failed to diagnose a serious problem in my mazda's transmission even though the "AT" light came on and the vehicle failed to shift gears often. They installed a defective windshield and refused to replace it when it broke. Shortly after moving to Maryland, I came here for a vehicle inspection. They failed me due to a minor imperfection in my windshield (an imperfection which, by the way, had passed inspection in New York). A few hundred dollars later, I had a new windshield, along with my inspection certificate. The other day, a really annoying little fly was buzzing in front of my face while I was driving. I lightly swatted it against the windshield with the palm of my hand. A spider web-shaped series of cracks about a foot in diameter appeared. I called up Far East to tell them what happened and they refused to replace the defective windshield that they'd installed. The windshield plays an important structural role in a car. This defective windshield may very well have cost me my life had I been involved in an accident. Instead of recognizing this fact and making amends for their error, Far East impolitely brushed me aside. Apart from the windshield, during the inspection they also told me that my wheel would fall off imminently. I opted not to go for the $1,000+ repair they proposed. It's almost a full 2 years later now and all 4 wheels are still firmly attached to my car. I advise you not to put your life and your money into the hands of these mechanics. read more

The customer service was very good, everyone who walked in the place was treated like they were old friends. i went here twice, and both times I had to go back at least once to get the job done that I paid for. Jon and Watchman are great guys, Paul -eh. But the most important things are the work and the price and I was not satisfied with either. The first time I had a headlight replaced. it stopped working a few days later but I was out of town. I returned and they replaced it. Second time, I had some services done and my windshield replaced. The service was crappy as I had to replace my battery the next week and that wasn't even on my rec services list. Paul kept trying to get me to replace my windshield wipers (which I can do myself), neglecting to mention more important things like my battery and worn tires. the rearview mirror was loose on the new windshield and after going back twice with no repair, I had to pay the dealer to fix it. and Far East returned my car with some God awful noise coming from the rear, which I had to go back twice for them to actually listen to and fix. My entire family uses Far East Motors and now most of my friends do too. Here's why: 1) I know they won't take advantage of me. One time I went and they gave me a quote for parts and labor and when I went to pick the car up the final bill was almost $150 less than the quote. When I asked why, they explained that they were able to finish more quickly than they thought and so adjusted the bill to reflect that. They could have easily charged me the full quote and I never would have known the difference. I was so impressed with their honesty and integrity. 2) Watchman is wonderful. I chose Far East because i moved my office to Silver Spring and it works very well for me to have a good auto shop walking distance from my office. With 3 visits under my belt, I couldn't be happier!
