I stopped by today for a regular maintenance inspection (Oil change), cabin filter and fluids. I had booked the service in advance about 5 days. I was extremely shocked that they wouldn't have a cabin air filter replacement, given that I had scheduled the service in advance. Further, at checkout I find out that the shop is not very military friendly having been laughed at, when asking for the regular 10% discount for parts and services (which a lot of places do). For this being my first visit, I'm not going there again. read more

I normally wouldn't bother to write a bad review, but I'm honestly a little shocked by my experience at Murray's auto clinic. Murray's came highly recommended by a friend, so therefore I believed I was in very good hands. I brought my SUV to Murrays because the Check AWD (all wheel drive) system light came on my dashboard after having 2 used tires installed. I became very worried by the alert, and didn't want to risk damage to my vehicle by not investigating the cause for the light to come on. I was a nervous wreck when I brought my vehicle into the shop, for fear that I would receive bad news. I dropped my vehicle off first thing in the morning as instructed and left to wait for the cars system to be checked. At noon, I was told my vehicle is ready. When picking up my vehicle, I was given a very vague explanation as to why the sensor light came on. A very vague explanation which to me meant maybe they had no clue what the problem could be (which, if that was the case, just say so). The mechanic suggested I purchase 4 brand new tires to correct the problem. In the meantime, he said he cleared the code (for now) and that the light would most likely return until I purchase 4 new tires. This was definitely not good news because I had only just purchased the two used tires but, I figured they are professionals, and I would follow their advice. Literally the same day the AWD check status light came right back on as the mechanic had stated would possibly happen. So I definitely figured I needed to hurry and get four new tires. Fast forward two weeks later, I'd been driving with the AWD check status light on for two weeks when while driving the Check Tire Pressure status light came on. I always carry a portable air pump in my vehicle, so I proceeded to check the tire pressure and add air. Turns out, the PSI (tire pressure) for 2 tires was severely high 45 psi vs 32 psi (correct psi for my SUV) and the two remaining tires had severely low psi (25 psi vs 32 psi). I corrected the psi for all four tires to 32 psi, and when I drove the car afterwards.......NO LIGHTS ON MY DASHBOARD! No Check AWD light, and no check tire pressure light. Now, I paid $138 for my visit to Murray's auto clinic. Which I paid, trusting that they did all they could professionally to ensure that my car was fine. Call me crazy, but wouldn't you think a professional mechanic would think to check tire pressure in a situation such as mine? I'm literally shocked that they didn't even think to check my tire pressure. That's would be the first thing I would check, IF I were a mechanic, but I'm not and I expected a lot more from these guys. So disappointing. So just wanted to give a heads up to any ladies considering bringing their car to this auto shop. Be careful. If you don't know much about vehicles... You might be in trouble going there. read more

I would be seriously remiss not to write a rave review for Murrays. They have always been communicative, transparent, and done good work. We needed to replace the entire engine block on my vehicle, and Murray's gave a significantly better quote than any of the other places around. And even when the job ended up needed far more time and labor than initially anticipated, they honored the same original quote. They have been great for all of the follow-up visits to make sure everything remains working smoothly. When we ran into another issue later down the road, they were very helpful, and comped the cost of repairs under warranty even though we had to have the repairs done at another shop (we were out of town when the issue occurred, otherwise we would have gone straight to them). We are really thankful to have Murray's in our neighborhood, and will definitely go back for all of our repair needs. read more

Fast and realiable service. Reasonable prices. I needed all my brakes replaced and they completed the job in a day. I only wished they offered shuttle service. I had to catch a Lyft home and back to the shop. They said it was due to COVID, but none of the mechanics or guys in the office had on masks, which made me doubt there concerns for COVID. read more

These guys are great. Super responsive and reliable, and affordable. One day while washing my car, I found my little son smiling and spraying water into the gas tank. In think he thought he was being helpful. The next day the car had trouble starting. I called around and everyone told me they would have to replace the tank and it would cost over $1k. When I called Murray's, they asked me about the make and model of my car and came back with an alternative and creative solution. They didn't replace the tank and saved me hundreds of dollars. The car is working as good as before. I really appreciated how they took the extra effort to make this affordable for me. Now it's just a funny story I will continue to remind my son about when he gets older. read more

Murray's Auto Clinic solved a very tricky problem with my Mazda 3 ABS Control Module. Alex was very helpful, honest and straight forward from the beginning. Tim (shop foreman) and Murray (owner) kept the car until every problem was addressed and went the extra mile to make sure my car was safe and I was happy with the results. It's hard to find honest & talented technicians these days. I went with this shop because of the great reviews and I was not disappointed. In the past 18 years Murray's has seen me and my family through 2 Volvos, 2 Fords, a Honda and a Toyota, and now a Prius. They earned my trust from the first when my Volvo S80 was throwing off 18 codes. Another auto place wanted to fix all 18. At Murray's the mechanic reasoned that they must all have something in common, and traced it to the single point of failure, fixed that, and all was well. They have never condescended to me, a woman, but have always been courteous and exceedingly honest. They suggest what really needs attention versus what bears monitoring and test their repairs. I will go there as long as I live in Silver Spring for any cars I own. read more

I had our car serviced at another shop recently. That place charged me 4x what Murray's did, and did not remedy the problem! I remembered seeing this shop when I was at LG (a body shop) across the street with a previous vehicle and decided to give them a shot before going to the dealership where I know we would pay a lot and potentially be gouged. The guys at Murray's were knowledgeable, professional, and honest. They completed the necessary repairs in just over 24 hours. They noticed a couple of additional things that were not urgent but would need attention in the coming months but did not try to convince me to pay for other repairs not needed at the time, and so I will definitely bring our vehicles back. Glad there's a Murray's. Had exceptional service here for an off- track drivers window. With a quality busy shop like Murray's, they didn't have to take a small job, inclement weather, busy season--but they did. Means they're neighborly. Murray's is conveniently located in Silver Spring. Think old Gifford's ice cream location, it's around the corner from there. If you have to leave the car, cross Georgia Avenue to pick up the free commuter bus. Silver Spring Metro is about six blocks, nice walk. Glad there's a Murray's. Glad there's a Yelp, too. I use it like the Yellow Pages. Yellow pages with reviews. We can educate ourselves with these reviews. Customers of all stripes need to understand--- a quality shop is there to fix things, not answer hypotheticals from would-be customers. We need to know what we want before making the call. We should all have a quick phone- pic of anything with a Serial Number on it. What size are the tires, what's the identifying information inside the door panel? Make an easy photo record. Do it for family members too. I've taken my car to Murray's Auto Clinic a few times since moving to Silver Spring (spent close to $700) and it's typically been a positive experience, so I hate to be writing this review, but I am so upset with the conversation I just had with the owner, Murray, that I am posting this, and will be looking for another mechanic. I recently took my car to them less than a month ago for battery issues (the cell was faulty is what the mechanic who worked on my car, told me). They kept my car for a day, and at the end of the day, called me and said it was repaired. I have been driving the car for a couple of weeks since then, and recently, I have had the same issue with the car that I had when I took it to them last month to fix - when I put my key in the ignition, the car does not rev up, it just sits. I have to try one or two more times before it comes to life. That's what happened last month and it was related to the battery. My guess is that it's the same issue and is a faulty cell or something similar. I called Murray's today to see if they could look at it tomorrow, and the owner was pretty curt and short with me telling me they were slammed and that the earliest they could do was Tuesday or another day next week. We talked for a few minutes and the call went south when he assumed I did not understand something he said, and I said "I understand, I speak English." He responded with saying "So do I." And hung up on me. I get that he's busy and that he may have been having a bad day, but that is not the way to communicate or do business, period. If he wasn't in the right headspace, he should've had someone else answer the phone until he was in the right frame of mind to deal with customers. There was also no acknowledgment either that I was dealing with the same car issue I reached out to them last month about, so they could very well have not done a good repair job. After this experience, they just lost a customer. read more

This was the moment I knew Murray's was the place for me: the dealership suggested about three different repairs that would cost us $750. I hoped that Murray's could do them for a cheaper amount. In fact, they checked the car and found that the repairs weren't even necessary. I mean, they could have easily told me, "Oh we can do that for $650," but instead, they just saved me money. Nice. At the same time, I can't give them five stars because I still find that they are moderately priced on everything. It's a professional place that seems to know what it's doing, and you don't feel like you're going to get cheated though. That's important in DC. read more

wasted $1150 here. got two repairs and they both had to be redone by a different mechanic . while changing a valve they broke another piece in engine and glued the broken piece together without telling me. their diagnostics were bad (they fixed the wrong problem) and their brake work had to be redone. not returning. read more

Murray I visited Murray auto service because I needed to get my car inspected after I bought it from New Jersey. I did a quick Google search on auto service and inspection companies in the Silver Spring area Murray's immediately popped up having five star rating so I had to check them out. I didn't have an appointment and tried to walk in but it was already late in the day but a very nice gentleman told me to make an appointment for the next day they would make sure that they would fit my car in and have it done by the end of the day. I returned the next day around 8 AM and dropped my car off. Murray's was able to inspect my car with it two hours and called me to pick it up around 10. Nice! They also noticed that I had a Florida drivers license so that sparked a conversation which was nice. It showed that they were not only interested in my business but they were also interested in learning about me. Whether or not my assessment is accurate, It still felt nice. I'm huge on customer service and Murray's definitely delivered. Definitely have to go back to get my car serviced when the time comes. read more

I needed a lightbulb installed on my Mazda 3. If you own a Mazda, you know the pain of installing the bulb. Haven been burned by a few repair shops, mainly Adelphi Auto, I was reluctant to let anyone else touch my car. I called Murrays and was pleasantly greeted by Alex. I just wanted to let the owner and potential customers know what a good mechanic and good person Tim is. He was aware of a Hyundai safety issue and a manufacturer's warranty. Even though online information showed it might not cover my car due to mileage, he still encouraged me to contact Hyundai to try and avoid paying for a costly repair. After some hassle from the dealership and Hyundai, they finally agreed to cover it. Instead of thinking short-term by taking advantage of a customer, Tim thought long-term by looking out for a customer, which leads to loyal repeat-business in the future. He showed intelligence and integrity that are unfortunately rare in this world. Thanks for the outstanding service! :) UPDATE: After the dealership recommended a lot of repairs that seemed unnecessary, Alex at Murray's kindly offered to double-check my car. After initial drop off, I thought I was getting quality, efficient service but they are a typical shop - they weren't able to fix the problem and attempted to charge additional fees for unnecessary work that did not fix the problem that they were supposed to fix (the A/C). When the vehicle was dropped off, I told the manager (Milo) where the source of the issue would be (fuse panel) based on previous experience with the vehicle. After review, he cited the issue as being something completely different, stating that they had to flush the A/C and use some special fluid and light to find a leak, which they supposedly found and supposedly fixed replacing refrigerant. Upon retrieving the vehicle, I told him the issue may not be fixed since they didn't address my original concern. He said to bring it back if there is an issue. I paid thinking the job was complete and drove a few days and the found the problem was not fixed. The vehicle was brought back for them to finish the job. They tried again, finally attempting to address the fuse panel that I asked them to look at originally. Whatever they attempted, the A/C still wasn't fixed and they tried to charge additionally for the work. The job was not complete. Typical auto shop, instead of fixing the issue, they added extra labor and work that added to the bill. To top it off, the manager (Milo) quickly became defensive, belligerent, and argumentative in front of customers when simply asked politely about the issue still not being fixed with added charges. STAY AWAY. In their attempt to rush jobs through, they are not honest about their ability to fix a problem and I was truly taken aback by their complete and utter disrespect of their customer. I've never seen any small business establishment actually YELL at the customer, especially in front of other customers. The job was never fixed, money was paid --and somehow management found a way to blame the customer. Yes, good shops are hard to find, and this definitely wasn't one of them. read more

This happened at about noon this very same day of my posting. I'll make this short. I called to simply get a quote on changing my brake pads. He gave me a quote for labor, brakes, and the complete changing of my rotors ($400- $500). So I asked him for only the cost of the pads and labor and I questioned, "I don't have to completely change the rotors every time the brakes are changed, right?" He then raises his voice at me, very unprofessionally and irate! (trying to make it seem as if he's right) So I had to ask if he understood what was asking him, he replies, "yes I understand" then slams the phone down hanging it up". If this is the type of business you like to deal with, go right ahead. I will be going elsewhere! THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF IF YOU LET THEM! read more

I was referred to Murray's from Radial Tire Company. They said this is where the staff have their cars worked on. Called the the store, actually spoke to the owner, Murray, and explained that when AAA changed my tire, they wound up breaking 2 rods on the wheel. I came to the store; someone opened the door for me; spoke to Murray. They gave a courtesy ride to the Metro. A little while later I call telling me that it needed another rod, My heart sank, wondering how much more it was going to cost me. They only charged me for the part. They picked me up & brought me to the shop the next day. It was cheaper than I expected. And asked if my front end was shaking. Yes, I knew it needs some axle work, but they didn't pressure me. These guys remind me of my auto clinic in Sterling, VA: honest & excellent Customer service. And yes I'll be back in a couple of weeks for them to work on my front axle. This place was recommended by our normal garage who had trouble diagnosing a problem with our car heater (2002 Acura MDX). I think that's a good description in itself, Murray's is where other garage's go when the problem is too complicated. The problem did turn out to take a while to figure out and repair. While it made us start wondering whether it was time to buy a new car, I was amazed by the level of communication and service by the staff. They ended up having our car for a week and called us every day with an update. It turned out the first fix they tried didn't work, which sometimes happens, but what is rare was how apologetic they were about the extra time they would need to have our car and their offer to reduce our final bill. read more

We were looking for a backup for our primary auto repair garage and decided to try Murray's based on the recommendations on Yelp...boy were we surprised. What we found: Second rate, disrespectful, unorganized, dismissive...not for us. Felt like a ripoff with nasty customer service by the front office. I was going to give them two stars when I started writing this because they didn't damage our car...we think, but after re-reading what I wrote...I had to take it down to one star. Front Office: Three disorganized, disrespectful, dismissive. First they took two hours to change oil for a scheduled appointment that should have taken less than an hour. Get this, they had to go out to buy the filter and synthetic oil because they didn't have it in stock...how second rate is that! They knew what kind of car was coming in for an oil change, they should at least have checked to make sure they had the necessary materials in stock. Yes, their disclaimer says they're "not responsible for delay...due to the unavailability of parts shipments beyond their control." BUT COME ON!! This is oil and a filter! Ridiculous! Second, one of the comments made by someone who seemed like they were in charge, that we overheard, really, REALLY, spoke volumes about how they treat their customers and what they actually think about their customers. "That car is as messed up as the owner" ...not said in a jokingly, fun-natured way as one would with friends, but said with sarcasm and disgust about the owner. I just wonder who that owner is...guaranteed it won't be us since we're not going back. Mechanic Shop: The mechanics seem to be good, but seem to work in fear of the dictatorial front office, who belittles them for no apparent reason other than they're mechanics. STAY STRONG Mechanics! You're the ONLY reason they're in business. With the large number of auto repair shops in the downtown Silver Spring area, we'll keep looking for that alternate/back up to our primary garage. read more

When you want it done right, do it yourself...Well, Murray's tosses that adage out the window. They're efficient and I trust their diagnoses and work. They tell you the needed repair and its urgency AND they must know they are the schiznik bc they NEVER used high pressure tactics. You either say 'yes, do it now' or 'no, I'll wait.' I use overnight dropoff, and they call you when the car's ready--for my repairs, it's the w/n 24 hours. I've never seen a customer waiting area, so I usually wait near the entrance, where the very busy and paperwork-filled office area is located. Yes, old school but obviously well managed bc I've never encountered lost paperwork/keys or a misdiagnosis in my 20 yrs of patronage. read more

I brought in my dying 16-year old car because the muffler fell off and I realized I had some other problems brewing. Ultimately, my car had a LOT more problems than I knew about, and it was not financially viable for me to spend thousands of dollars in repairs for a car that may have only another year or two left in it. I will have to say that the guys here were super helpful, straightforward, and honest. I was never once pressured me into doing repairs, and they even remarked that the repairs may not be worth it at that point in my car's life. The only charged me for their time (which was totally justified and understandable), and I left sad that my Civic was really just toast, but glad that I had someone that was not trying to rip me off for never-ending repairs. I have since bought a brand new car, but I'm definitely keeping these guys in mind if I ever need an auto guy! read more

My car had been making some scary noises, so I needed to have it checked out ASAP since it seemed like I could have a dangerous problem. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp I was happy to call Murray's and give them my business. However, I called on a Monday around 2:45 pm to ask for an appointment and was told that Thursday was the earliest they could see me. I explained that my problem was quite urgent and asked if they had anything earlier, and the man I spoke with (I think his name was Martin or Marty?) rudely retorted, "that IS early." I told him I'd have to go somewhere else that could accommodate me sooner. Needless to say, I won't be giving Murray's my business. Responding to the owner's comment, my problem is NOT with the appointment system. I totally understand that. My problem was and still is with the rude customer service I encountered. read more

Staff was courteous and prompt but the prices were down right insane. $108 diagnostic fee alone, then between spark plugs, an air filter (which I had changed less than 3 weeks prior) and a fuel filter, it was going to total to $750. Are you freaking kidding me. After paying the diagnostic fee I contacted to a friend and explained. He told me to buy the spark plugs ($20) and he changed all 4 in 10 minutes. Pretty sad that for the spark plug service alone murrays was going to charge me $250. Check engine turned off soon after my friend changed the plugs. Thanks for your diagnosis but your sky high prices makes me think you're trying hard to screw me here. read more

Great experience here. Dropped my car off numerous times, and they said they couldn't guarantee to get it done, only to call back an hour or two later to say it's done. A lot of mechanics will try to pressure you into fixing things that are unnecessary, but I've never felt that from this place. Great service, and the drop off service is a nice touch. Murray's auto clinic helps me when my car stopped suddenly while driving on 16th st. They were great with explaining what had occurred, in this case several things were wrong with the car and unfortunately could not be repaired without replacing the engine. They treated me well and did not overcharge for the diagnostics of the car. I will use them in the future for all my repair needs. read more
