Rude, unethical, shady. I'm astounded by the positive reviews for Beahm's. We obviously had a different experience than most have had and while it could have been an off day, the experience we did have will hopefully save someone a few hundred bucks if they're in a similar situation. We were in the process of re-titling a car registered in Pennsylvania to Maryland and needed a state inspection to complete the titling process. Called, made an appointment for the next day (perhaps the only positive) and dropped the car off. Several hours later, we were called and told what needed to be fixed. Lights, power steering rod. We were quoted a price we believed was fair and they began work. An hour or so later they called back and said the mechanic had caught something that hadn't been caught initially: a decade old hairline crack above the odometer in the dash shield (that plastic guard behind your steering wheel) that they claimed affected the readability of the speedometer. See picture. This is not the case. They said they could order a new guard for a few hundred dollars plus labor, but they couldn't pass inspection with the crack as it is. In addition to all this, the cost of all repairs was going to be about $150 more than quoted. Our incredulity caused their tone to shift completely: the owner became annoyed and angry but totally unsympathetic, knowing that they had the upper hand in the situation. They ended up coming down on the cost of repairs to the original quote (still weird, more hostage-like behavior), but nothing could be done about the inspection-failing crack. We decided to cut our losses, pick up the car with the initial repairs done, and figure out another solution to the cracked dash guard. Insult to injury: when we picked up the car, for some bizarre reason, the contents of our middle console (photos, receipts, an emergency credit-card) were scatted all over the front seats. Why they had been removed in the first place I have NO idea - nothing the mechanic would need was in the console - but then to just scatter it in the front seat was so creepy. Freaking out about how to get the car past inspection without going further over our budget, I took the car closer to my work in Chevy Chase, Mario's Lake Liberty garage. This place was night and day. The mechanic I showed the crack to LITERALLY laughed that Beahm's had failed our inspection over this. Within two hours, Mario's had passed the car's inspection and I was happy to pay them another inspection fee rather than hand over another cent to Beahm's. All's well that ends well. After picking the car up from Beahm's, the car wheel creaks like an old floorboard when turned to the left because of the steering rod Beahm's installed, but I didn't want to have to go back and have them check it out again for fear of having to pay for a follow-up. 11/100 This would be my first five star review for a car mechanic. My car was overdue for one of the scheduled maintenance interval and it desperately needed some tuning. After calling a couple of places including my overpriced dealership. I asked for friends recommendations and sure enough they mentioned Beahms and read on Yelp their outstanding reviews. I was like ok, this is the place. Also I had a recent oil change at Jiffy and told me that I needed all these ridiculous flushes. Mr Beahm told me he would look at it. I met him, "Mike Beahm" very nice and personable. His shop is small and very mom and pop feel. I dropped off my baby girl here and treated myself to Kaldis. Within 3 hours, my car was ready. He was happy to report that my car was good and no repairs or flushes were needed! He even changed air filters and other stuff because it was due to be changed. The price was so reasonable! I was expecting to pay a little more they the actual price. I can see why this place has so much positive reviews. My dealership was going to quote me over $600 for tune up, and told me I needed new cv joints and replace some pan. Nope, my car now has a clean bill of health thanks to Beahms, and can now fly back on the highway! read more

I have been going to Beahm's for years now and I never have to pay for more than what is necessary. I have an older car and I am often told that I need service when I do not. I trust Beahm's wholeheartedly, especially since I have an older car. Today, I was told that he doesn't want to see me put too much into the car since there's so much rust. The engine runs great and I feel safe driving it. But, really, who tells. you that these days? I initially came to Beahm's for an oil change and tire rotation a few weeks back on the recommendation of a co-worked who had used them for years and had stellar service from Mike. The entire process took about 40 minutes - just enough time to grab coffee around the corner - and I was on my way. Great price and speed for a service without an appointment. Happy with my first experience, I came back to Beahm's for my Maryland State Inspection since I'll be registering a new car in the state. After dropping my car off earlier than their posted business hours (Mike and his crew were inside and happily let me in), I was told they would give me a call in a bit to let me know the result. About two hours later, Mike called to let me know I passed inspection with no issues and no maintenance was needed. With an 11 year old vehicle, I was incredibly happy with the result and could imagine I would not have received the same report if I went to the dealer. I can say with confidence that the guys at Beahm's are an honest shop and do great work. I haven't needed an appointment for either service yet they still finish everything same day and provide the quickest updates they can. my experience with Mr. Beahm was a surreal one, to say the least. let me explain. so, i had been noticing that my ignition had been intermittently slow to spark over the past few weeks and was perplexed as to what could be the possible auto ailment. none of the check engine lights were coming on, so there were no codes to check. i took it in to a nearby auto parts store to have the battery and alternator checked and they were fine. my thoughts now turned to a possible problem in the fuel line/system. sure enough, the next morning, the old bastard wouldn't turnover. cue - AAA. now i have tried a couple of area mechanics in the hopes of finding one to be my main mechanic, but after living in the Sprung area for almost 8 years now ~ i have yet to find one. cue - Mr. Beahm. after reading the reviews on this here yelp site and some other word-of-mouth recommendations, i decided that now was a good time to give Mr. Beahm, an old timer, good ole boy from the days when DC could actually be considered a southern city, a shot at becoming my main mechanic. after the AAA driver was able to start my car (yeah, i don't know either), i drove on over to Mr. Beahm's shop and dropped off my car. i told him about my problems, gave him my number, and he said he'd give me a call after he had taken a look at it. simple enough. cue - me chilling out at some of the local coffee shops. four hours later..... no call. i took it upon myself to walk back to the shop to inquire about the diagnosis. Mr. Beahm did a bit of a double take when he saw me in the driveway of his shop. i politely asked about the possible length of time that the work would take. he looked perplexed for a second, then muttered, 'oh, you want to get going dontcha?' i then got a rambling dissertation upon the possible problems which finally ended with - 'i bet it's the fuel filter. i'll change it for you and get you out of here in 20 minutes.' cue - me and coffee again. 20 minutes later, i get a call from Mr. Beahm. the fuel filter is changed for the tune of 60 dollars. i then got another lecture, this time about my old fuel filter, which he really wanted me to blow into (yeah, i don't know either), finished off with 2 pieces of advice if the problems came back: 1. jiggle the key in the ignition a couple of times, and 2. have someone kick just under the fuel cap in order to get it to turnover. at this point, i'm way late for work. screw it. the car works and i take off. two days later. the car won't start. so much for the fuel filter. cue - AAA again. i tow the car in, and this time, because i am working downtown, i drop off the car for the day and take the metro to work. Mr. Beahm tells me he'll give me a call later. it's 1pm. i have yet to receive a call, so i call Mr. Beahm. he seems pretty annoyed that i called him about my vehicle. he says that his guys are looking into the situation and that he would call me with the diagnosis. uh, ok. there's not much i can do at this point. around 3pm he returns my call, informing me that his guys are putting in a new fuel pump. i seem to forget the part where i gave him permission to go ahead and begin work on my car, especially minus an estimate, but sure enough, that's just what he did. Mr. Beahm obviously lives in a world of one way conversations, but at this point i have zero to nil options due to the facts that the car won't start and i don't have another place i could take it to, so i facepalm and mutter, 'fine.' i get a call a half hour later. the car works. the fuel and air filter total $395 and total labor is $250. he says that he saved me $200 on the fuel pump, but fuel pumps for my vehicle range from $200-$400, so i remain doubtful of the veracity of that statement. either way, it's been a couple weeks since i have taken my car in for the second time to Mr. Beahm's shop and there has not been a problem with starting my car with the new fuel pump. that is the only reason why i have given Beahm's a three star review. the process was painful, but the end result was satisfactory. read more

It's never fun when your car goes in to the repair shop for work. Am I going to have to give up eating for a week and all the other little extras just so I have the cash to pay for my car repairs? Not if you go to Beahm's! My A/C died and here in DC it is a must. On top of that the motor in my back window broke and my window kept slipping down (not fun when it rains!). I was not looking forward to taking my car in and being w/o a car for the day, not to mention the logistics of how to get home...wait...and then return to pick up my car. I took my car in at 7:00am and walked two blocks to a swank coffeehouse, worked out at my gym, bought some stuff at Whole Foods, window shopped in downtown Silver Spring (most shops don't open until 10 am) and found a shop that opened at 9:30 that was opened where I purchased a cute dress. Then, at 10:30 I got a phone call. My car was done!! I was just getting ready to have my friend pick me up. Still, as I walked back to the shop I worried about how much this was going to cost me. Both jobs plus an oil change was under $400! I think that's pretty good! Plus, I had expected to wait all day. Beahm's Auto Service continuously gets high marks from Washington Consumers' Checkbook magazine. I can see why now. It is an easy walk to metro, plus as I mentioned, there are lots of places to visit to occupy your time if you chose to wait! read more

I was told by the dealer that I needed a new belt and rear shocks/struts. Dropped off the car. 30 minutes later, Beahm told me I needed nothing. Everything was in good shape. In other words: I went in fully prepared to spend money on a repair (Beahm is cheaper than the dealer, and local, so why not??) and was convinced not to. Amazing!! Are these guys for real? The Good: They seem very honest. I thought the screeching sound coming from my car was possibly my front brakes since I just got my rear brakes done recently. It turns out the issue was my rear brakes again. The owner told me to go back to the last place that did my rear brakes so that I can take advantage of any possible warranties. It turns out I'm a couple weeks shy of my warranty expiring, so I'll be saving a lot of $$$. I appreciate their honesty; some other auto shops lack in the ethics department. The Bad: They have a very false sense of security! When I came to pick up my car, the owner told me that my car key is sitting on the floor of my car. My heart dropped... I thought I may have misheard him. Sure enough... I walk to my car, and my car key was in plain sight on the floor of the driver's side... and the windows were down!!! My car was right by the entrance and was not surrounded by any other cars, so anyone off the street could have jumped in and pulled off. Considering Downtown Silver Spring has lots of foot traffic and a fairly high crime rate, this was really poor judgment on their part. They could have at least put the key UNDER the floor mat so it wasn't in plain sight. If I ever come back here, I will make sure to tell them to keep my key inside the shop until I arrive. Last year my alternator died in the middle of the road on East-West highway and 16th Street. I had a grad class which I couldn't miss, so it wasn't until late that night (2am) that I could get my car towed to a shop. I googled a place close by and Beahm's came up. I had the tow truck take my car there. I left a note explaining why my car was there, left my keys and contact info and called them in the morning. They fixed my alternator within a few hours and were so kind! Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I had a friend change my brake shoes. They were kind enough to offer to do it but most certainly shouldn't have. My car was squeaking like crazy. I drove slowly to Beahm's. He told me the replacement was not installed correctly, but fixed it within an hour and at 1/3 of the price another car service gave me. Beahm's saved my butt twice. And after having a horrific experience last year with the Meineke across the street, I've realized that Beahm's customer service can't be topped. They are respectful, efficient, knowledgeable, and most importantly HONEST. They may not be a big chain, but don't let that dissuade you from going to them! I love Beahms! Mike Beahm has single-handedly restored my faith in auto-mechanics. When the water pump & drive belt went out on my car, I had her towed home and spent a couple days trying to find an honest, reputable mechanic in the area. Yelp reviews lead me to Beahm's Auto Service which was conveniently located less than a mile away from me! I called and spoke directly to Mr. Beahm one evening and had my car towed in early the next morning. Within 3 hours, Mr. Beahm had contacted me with a full diagnostic report and quote. Not once did he suggest any services or repairs that weren't absolutely necessary. After some back and forth with my insurance company*, my car was ready by the end of that same day. Upon picking up my car, Mr. Beahm showed me all the parts that had been replaced/removed, which I have never had a mechanic do, but I appreciated him taking the time to do so. *Mr. Beahm does not like dealing with insurance companies and rightfully so; he and about 2-3 other mechanics do all the work themselves. They do not have a customer service/admin dept, so the time spent going back and forth with finicky insurance reps is time that would otherwise be spent making repairs or locating parts. Bottom line: If you need an honest and timely mechanic, this is the place to go and has apparently been so for over 40 years. read more

Mike Beahm and his son, Mike, are the best of the best when it comes to auto repair! We've used his services for many years and they have always delivered. In fact, everyone in my neighborhood uses Beahm and that's how we learned about his shop. His prices are fair and transparent; he's had that shop for many many years; he's got a night drop-off box; he's conveniently just off of Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring, and he and his mechanics get the job done right! We just had our brakes done on our Chevy Traverse. The brakes started grinding and I knew the pads and rotors were shot. We called Beahm in the early afternoon and asked if they could take a look and give us an estimate that day. He told us to bring it on in. They were able to put the SUV up in the air and show us the warn pads and rotors. We gave them the go-ahead to fix the front and back brakes, and three hours later, we were picking up the car. That just doesn't happen at most auto repair shops... guess that's why Beahm's review ratings are so high. He knows cars like the back of his hand! Beahm's was recommended to me by Barry at Superior Transmissions (also a great place for all things transmission related) just down the street. I'm a few years out of college and still haven't transitioned fully from having a dad who completely managed the maintenance and repairs on my 02 mitsubishi lancer. As a young female, I felt VERY comfortable at this business and totally at ease confessing that I didn't know a thing about cars. You get the feeling right away from this family owned and run business, that even if they know "you don't know a thing about cars" they are gonna give you the best service possible, for the cheapest cost. No taking advantage of the customer here, or pulling unnecessary tricks. I called Beahm's to get a price quote for a basic oil and filter change after getting off work at 1pm, and to find out how busy they were. Big Mike (Mike Senior) said "how soon can you be there?" Within 15 minutes of my phone call, I was pulling into the service lot. The whole process, including an upgrade to Mobile One oil and an air filter change, cost me less than $70 and was completed in roughly an hour - only because my car needed a special filter not in stock they had to go and get. Both men were very helpful and kind, and explained to me the process and what they did and observed about my car. Definitely plan to go back! As a side note, even if you don't live in Silver Spring, the fact that Beahm's is conveniently located within walking distance of Whole Foods, Mall, Restaurants, Starbucks, etc, is a huge plus (and an added reason to go out of DC for service) when you're waiting for a couple of hours. A friend sent me their direction for my mechanical inspection. I called to make an appointment, the person on the phone told me not to worry about it, they didn't take them, to just bring it in in the morning and they'd take care of me. I arrived around 9, and the first thing they say is, "Oh, we don't do inspections here, but I can send it to my brother's place." That would have been useful information when I'd called. I ask how long that would take and he calls over to the other place. The guy asks if I'd be dropping it off or waiting, I said I was hoping to get it done quickly, and I'd wait. They say there's one car ahead of me, but it shouldn't be that long if I take it over there myself. Sounds good, so I drive over to White Oak. The line when I arrive at the other place doesn't bode well. But I fill out a form, and finally talk to "Dave" who they told me to ask for. Dave tells me there are a dozen cars ahead of me, that it would be at least the mid-afternoon (4-5 hours) before they can get to it. I ask why they didn't mention that over the phone and he says they told him I'd be dropping it off and shouldn't matter. I asked why he'd lie directly to my face, since that wasn't at all what I'd been told. He asked if I wanted to wait, and I left. Notthing about that morning went as hoped. Obnoxious. read more

Brought in my vehicle that had engine issues with running unusually high rpms and "check engine" light was on. They called a couple hours later to say that they didn't recognize the code they got when they were looking for why the check engine light was on, so they cleared the code. They said they test drove my vehicle and said, "nothing is wrong, but bring it back if the light comes on again." When I picked up the vehicle and drove home, the same problem with high rpms but no acceleration continued. Only difference -- check engine light was off, but problem was still occurring. Waste of time and $40 for nothing... now I have to bring my vehicle to a real mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem. I do not recommend. read more

Beahms was my father's mechanic shop of choice, but I've stuck with them not out of tradition but because of their personal service and their standing behind their product. My dedication is such that I've stuck with them even after I moved closer to Baltimore. They're good at talking through different options, even over the phone. They've never stuck me with an unreasonable bill, and they've been especially reasonable when it came to follow up work. What drove me to do my review today was that they were able to throw in a fix to my locked out car radio as part of my oil change after two different dealership mechanics told me it would be at least $100 on its own to do the necessary change. Took my Nissan in for an oil change after being quoted a price over the phone. The price quoted over the phone was higher than what the actual cost was, which is great and allowed me to be prepared. They are well known and very well respected amongst parts distributors in the area, which also says a lot (I found this out shopping for parts and mentioning where I planned to take my vehicles) Fast, well priced and honest-couldn't ask for more from a mechanic! read more

I first came here on recommendation from a friend who knows cars. Most recently, I went after the dealer told me I needed new belts for $200; Beahm's told me the belts were fine, I just needed them tightened (which makes sense, they're only 50K miles old) and charged $20. Another time, dealer suggested various things totaling $2K+; Beahms took care of it for about $400. And when the check engine light was on, they checked it, told me it was just because the gas cap hadn't been tightened all the way at some earlier point (it was fine that day - I'd checked it), and didn't charge me a thing.
