I decided to give Sam's a try for lunch. I regret my decision. They're an old school kind of place which is fine, but you can tell they haven't updated their look in decades. It wasn't too off-putting, but quite noticeable. I wanted to start off with a beer, but their tap selection is pretty bad. Mostly mass produced American lagers. I went with a Dragoon IPA, but they only had it available in a can, and it was the only IPA to choose from. Sad. Next, I was thinking of trying their Philly, but the bartender said they had their 1/2 pound wings on special for $8.99, so I went with that. The wings were OK (I went with Chipotle BBQ), but why were they considered a special when they have them on their regular menu - for $8.99? The wings were OK. Not bad, but nothing to rave about. The fries that came with the wings though were terrible - undercooked and limp. That's not how anyone wants their fries. I was still a bit hungry after the wings, so I asked for a cup of chili. Another mistake. It was possibly the worst chili I've ever had. It was bland, bean heavy, and it was served in a wooden salad bowl with a plastic spoon. What the!? Time to go, so I asked for the bill. Those $8.99 wings? They showed up at $9.99 on the bill. Also, you're supposed to be able to add a cup of chili to any meal for $2.99 - but it showed up at $3.99 on the bill. I didn't feel like arguing & just wanted out, so I reduced the tip by $1 (the service actually wasn't bad though) and left. After such a sub par experience, I doubt I'll ever go back. read more

My mind is blown, after canceling 2 Uber rides, I took the 3rd ride since they're advertised to be open until 1am. If only you could give negative stars. Eww, yuck, don't go here. Really. I had no idea you could overcook a burger this much, while also burning the bun and fries. I'm not an overly picky eater, but most of what was served was disgusting. The waitress (if you choose to call her that) could care less and told me that's how they cook them and if I wanted it different I should have told her when I ordered. We saw her a total of 5 times: greeting and drink order, food order, food delivery, when I called her over to see why my entire meal was burnt to heck, and the check. Our drinks were never refilled. I almost never tip less than 20%, she got 10%. There are tvs and pool tables (hint, don't expect good food from a place with pool tables, and I do know better), so maybe it's a good beer and pool joint. This place is absolutely atrocious. The wait staff clearly doesn't care at all, as I had my drinks dropped off to me by an inattentive waitress who was too busy talking on her phone. It's so sad that they are concerned with their phones before customers and making tips. The food was fine, but it does not make up for the terrible terrible waitresses. They ignore you, talk crap about you, and constantly ignore you for their own cell phones/personal lives. Will NEVER be back. I forgot just how subpar my previous experiences here have been. I came hoping for an alternative to fast food and was hoping to find a decent salad. That didn't happen; the salad menu is miniscule and unappetizing. I guess I'm glad I didn't something in this arena, but more on that in a bit. Since getting a salad wasn't in the cards, I decided to give the Patty melt a shot. Mistake. The onions weren't grilled, it was dry as hell (asked to cook it medium well), and the fries were terrible. I asked the waitress for a chicken sandwich with a side salad instead, and the salad was mostly brown lettuce, and little else. Luckily the chicken sandwich wasn't completely garbage BUT I then noticed that my meal was more than it indicated on the menu. It turns out a side salad, instead of fries, is an upcharge that I wasn't told about. If I told someone I paid a few cents short of $14 for lunch, they would think I went somewhere nice or high quality. When I tell this story later I'm going to say, with a face full of disappointment, that I went to Famous Sam's and that it was a regrettable mistake I won't be making again. side note: regular tea (and soda, I guess) should not be over $2.00. My son and I visited Famous Sam's yesterday on Irvington and Campbell around 4:00 p.m. The positive things are that their draft beer is always nice and cold and the burgers I've had in the past have always been very good. But yesterday was not a good day. One of the cups of salsa we got with our chips had mold forming on it. Either it was old or not well enough refrigerated. The server immediately changed it and brought us another. The other complaint was that I ordered the Sam's famous pastrami sandwich. I only ordered half since I wasn't too hungry, I was happy that they offered that option. The meat in the sandwich was about 50% fat. I had to take that out or actually pull it out of my mouth. Back in the day, more than 50 years ago at the Sam's on 22nd, that sandwich was full of delicious pastrami with little to no fat or gristle. Yesterday, I ate mostly bread. So sad. I'll go back for the beer and burgers but never again for what made them "famous." read more

Save yourself the time, the money and the respect! I placed a to-go order before my lunch break, and was placed on hold. They must have forgotten about my call because after 10 minutes of waiting, I hung up and called back and they were ready to take my order. I had to repeat my order to the waitress several times since she couldnt hear me but when she repeated it back, order was correct. Waited 20 minutes to pick up my food. Wasnt greeted by any staff although they saw me enter, a drunk at the bar was more polite, and was actually the only one to say hi! The bartender couldnt find our order in their computer, so a good 10 minutes is spent re explaining my order, only for a cook to pop out from the back saying they have my order! After making my way back to work, I was oh so surprised to discovered my order was wrong. Called the restaurant, where they actually had the nerve to tell me they made my order correct! I'm looking at my order, knowing what I like and what I said, and they honestly tried to argue with me that they made the order correctly. After an offer to wait another 20 minutes to get a correct burger, I finally gave up and asked for a refund. I wasted the last of my lunch break starving and driving back to get a refund. Once again, staff did not even bother to greet me, and speaking to the manager was like nails on a chalk board. Manager has no sense of hospitality, was extremely rude in giving me back my money like i was taking the money from her purse! Excuse me that your staff couldnt make a simple cheeseburger! I apologize I tried to give you my business and all you gave me in return was an attitude that deserved a punch in the jaw. The whole experience has turned me off of Famous Sam's for a while. Never, EVER going to bother with this location again, but I'm sure with the rate its going, it wont be in business for much longer. read more

Before I ate here I had to check the health inspection rating for this place. They have never failed a health inspection ever. With that said I tried their Sonoran Taco Salad and was satisfied with it. I've tried their BBQ pulled pork as well as was happy with it. You just have to eat it with a fork because they pile on the pork. I had no problem with that at all:) I try and stay away from the fries. They aren't my fave. I remember the original Sams on 29th st that is long gone now but 'in the day' had the best pastrami sandwich in town, in fact you might have called it 'Famous'. This week we were in for lunch and the first thing i noticed was when i sat down in a booth.. well, lets say I would sit down very gently or you will need to visit the nearby Asian massage parlor to work out the kink you just put in your backside. Hey guys Fix the Booths they are terrible! The server was efficient and friendly, She has been there for at least the last few years we have been going in. The food was so so, my pastrami was an improvement over the last one I had there, a little too greasy but good flavor, it was actually ok. My buddy had a salad that was a little rough, maybe not their strong point. another buddy got a pickle with his food that looked like it had been munched on by someone else or possibly the roving vendor trying to sell his wares while we were dining. I wish the owner would take a serious look at trying to improve this location. Great bar with very good food their pastrami is a much try. You can tell the fires are fresh and not frozen . The jukebox was always pumping out tunes and there was always someone to play pool with. I picked up lunch today for our office; we order from this location at least once a month. It's a sports bar so I'm not sure what people are expecting. The food is good, it doesn't smell, the bathrooms were clean and the bartender was very nice. It was shift-change so the waitresses were a little chatty, but not ignoring customers by any means.
