I had pleasant interactions with both the cashier and with the sole gentleman customer service representative at Ocean State Job Lot on this visit. It was early afternoon on a work day, so the patrons were light, yet there were several stations open (3-4) and lines were 0-1 person deep. It was a whole different story, however, at the Customer Service desk. The line numbered 3, so I decided to make my purchases first, then check back in for my exchange. It was a different line up of customers by then, but I was #4 in queue. Poor Brian was the only rep behind the desk, and he also had to multitask helping out the other cashiers with their issues. I think I spotted the manager mulling about, and thought that it would be really nice if he were to jump on in to help thin out our line since the cashiers weren't trained for the task even though by then they were pretty free of customers. What I don't really like is when store's use the word "dollar" in their name, but DON'T sell everything in the store for one dollar or less. For instance, "Family Dollar" (which, ironically, is RIGHT next door to this store) doesn't sell everything for a dollar, and previous stores I used to go to (Dollar Plus in Dedham, Dollar Plus in Walpole, both of which have closed). Anyway, this store isn't a dollar store, but thankfully didn't call themselves it. I had to do a double-take to realize the actual name of the store. It's really called "Super Discount Store". I didn't notice if they sold any air fresheners, but if they do they should spray some around, and if not, management should walk next door to Family Dollar and buy one for the store, the Febreze "spring" edition would be nice. Worst experience ever with the cashier this afternoon. We've been customers of this store for years…read moreand have never been treated as carelessly as we were today. Don't get me wrong, the salesman was very helpful pulling sizes and giving great advice. The tailor was also knowledgeable and did a good and was friendly. Things however went quickly south when we got to the cashier to pay. To say that the young woman at the register was rude as an understatement. There was not only a lack of basic retail service skills, but the young woman's attitude was borderline hostile. Basic questions about the breakdown of the charges and any discounts we might be able to take advantage of were met with rolled eyes, huffing, and puffing...at one point she literally walked away and starting ringing up another customer! I've worked retail and know it's a tough job, but this is NOT who you behave with customers, especially when we were nothing but courteous. K&G, do better with vetting, hiring, and training your staff! This was absolutely ridiculous. I'm angry that I had to interact with this person and your company should be ashamed to employ someone like that.

Very distasteful, she never offered us bags to begin with, how is one to assume the bags are available only if you are paying for them? Why did she assume we were going to carry all of the items by hand to the vehicle? She could have at the very least offered bags given the amount of items we had on the counter. Because of people like her, companies like Family Dollar lose customers.

The store itself doesn't draw an ugly clientele, and there really aren't too many people throughout the store at any given time. While it might not always be the most organized or clean, it's good enough for a cheap, discount store. This store is large for a store of this type, with thirty two aisles precisely, and has a large section of everything from seasonal items, to food, to clothing (not the best thing to buy here, but they still have it), to cleaning, to storage, and so on and so on. Prices are consistently reasonable, and it is always a better idea to stop here instead of CVS down the street if you're looking for a better deal on essentially anything. Make sure before you come here to sign up for the rewards on their website and clip coupons to your account, then when you go to checkout you put in your phone number and the savings all get taken off. While the e-coupons don't work at other places, Family Dollar is one place that all the coupons have just worked. Staff are relatively quiet, but friendly typically.
