My brother had recommended to me to check out False Idol since I'm in the restaurant industry. We decided to take our family visiting from overseas there. Not realizing how popular and sought after a spot F.I. is, we simply showed up without reservations. We were greeted by a friendly host that also seated patrons to their sister restaurant Craft & Commerce (attached to False Idol). When we requested a spot for False Idol as walk-ups, rather than just turn us away, the host asked us to stand in another line for F.I. and speak to its host to see if she can do some magic to get us into this mystical speakeasy whose entrance looked somewhat like entering into a Disney themed tiki ride. It is here that we first met Crizell. She is one of the sweetest host we have ever met. She greeted us with the biggest smile and in spite of not having a reservation for this wildly popular place, she said with a slight wink "let me see what I can do". Shortly after, she returned and said, "follow me this way". Her words reminded me of the lyrics in the song Hotel California.. You know... "There she stood in the doorway ..... Then she lit up the candle, and showed US the way..." as we followed her in this tunnel like entrance. Then... we all just went "WOW". What an amazing place. It felt like we were in some enchanted den or cave in the world of tiki.. back in time... This place is spot on if you want to experience a tiki bar. This place takes it to another level. The drink menu is insanely creative, themed around tropical drinks that are unique and some quite strong... The bartenders were on top of their game and when one orders a large shareable drink, the lightning and thunder go off. We were having a blast with all the visual effects and the creative cocktails. Every once in a while, Crizell checked in on us.. with that sweet smile, wanting to make sure we were having a wonderful experience. An interesting concept and a cute date spot but it's loud even when it's not that busy. We were sitting right next to each other and had to yell. The drinks were stronger than expected, a good flavor and a fair price. Reservations are easy to get though it wasn't that busy on a weeknight before 7 so could easily have walked in. The servers recognized the name seemingly without looking and realized that some of the party members were already inside which was impressive. Wish they would have food and their menu is smaller than it used to be. Good location - can park in the structure by the tracks across the street for a fair price and almost no walk. It was love at first sip with the Coronado Luau Special...but more on that later. We had a reservation at False Idol on a Saturday evening. We're not from San Diego, but we realized upon walking in that reservation probably isn't needed! This is a bar with plenty of standing room, but we were happy to have the reservation to get a table. We had an incredibly large group at the table next to us that almost bled over into our table. Waaaay too many people there. They also had a group of guys that kept coming over to hit on them and do shots with them that kinda pulled us out of the otherwise immersive drinks and surroundings. First round, we had a Saturn and Ube Bae. Saturn was great! Ube Bae also great, but prepare for ultra sweetness! Second round we split a Coronado Luau Special, and from the first sip I knew it was the drink of my dreams. Our server was so kind to give us the recipe before we left. Now we can attempt (key word: attempt) to recreate the orange-y goodness of that drink. This place is great! We stumbled upon this place as there wasn't many places open late on a Thursday night. It was a great choice quite frankly. We were also able to find street parking easily on the Thursday night around 9:30. This place is inside a restaurant but once you walk into the restaurant, you'll be greeted by staff. The restaurant has some taxidermy animals and you definitely can't miss them. I don't remember the name of the restaurant though. However, once you enter into False Idol, the ambience is completely different, with its tiki theme. Because we came in without a reservation, we were provided instructions to stand but we could take bar seating if it ever becomes available. There was no bar seats that opened up, which is fine. We were able to snag a table though as a party was leaving. Our server was super nice about it though and let us sit at the table until the reservation for the table arrived. I ordered the ube bae which was amazing. I was deciding between the matcha and ube but settled for the ube as I wanted something sweeter. It was not a bad choice at all! In fact I'm craving it as I'm typing this review out! Our server/bartender was also really nice. I never got her name but she was super attentive and friendly despite how busy it was! They do also have flashing lighting and rumbling noises for whenever people order a fish bowl so I would definitely keep that in mind if someone is sensitive to flashing lights. First off it's beyond stuffy and cramped in there which is combined with hot air. You'll have a better chance at winning the lottery than getting a seat at the bar. This is a hidden Tiki Speakeasy located inside Craft & Commerce restaurant . You go to the left side as soon as you walk in . You will see a hostess standing there and maybe a line . It is very hard to get in you need to make reservations since they're always booked. We went in as a walk-in luckily we got in the only issue is that all the tables are reserved so you have to wait at the bar until someone gets up. It is a tiny space and hard to order a drink . Fabulous tiki bar which is a known tourist spot. Parties and bachelorette parties come here. Reservations are hard to come by. Located in the side room of another establishment interior is well decorated to look like a pacific island along with mandatory dim-lights and occasional thunder sounds. Menu is elaborate. False Idol might be my most favorite tiki bar of all time. I've had the opportunity to drop in quite a few times over the years and have always thoroughly enjoyed the experience and drinks. The atmosphere and ambiance is top-tier with an intriguing low-light setting and classic tiki decor strewn about. The water installation is a really cool touch and is always fun to be near. The menu is to the point and nicely put together with solid descriptions and their rum/cocktail program is one of, if not the best, I've ever seen. The bartenders are super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable which is great if you want to get nerdy chatting them up about rum, their niche ingredients, tiki mugs, history, and more (if that is your thing, it's certainly mine). There is a reason they are a world-renowned tiki bar, so take advantage and enjoy it! After many visits to Downtown, we finally got into the speakeasy and I loved it. Everyone was assigned a table and the servers came to you. We were lucky enough to get the seasonal menu where I tried the OG Banana Nog and it was easily one of the best cocktails I've ever had. All my friends tried it and we raved about it all night. It had the perfect amount of banana and creamy with the egg nogg taste. I wish I could go back and buy many more. The ube drink and other seasonal cocktails were great too. Tip: make reservations and make them early, especially for the weekend! My party of 3 had a great time enjoying at False Idol. My friend was able to snag a reservation for our party of 3 for a Saturday evening at 5:30. Yes, it was early for drinks, but apparently this was the only time available when my friend made the reservation a month in advance. We got super lucky with parking and was able to find a metered spot a couple blocks away. Parking is free after 6, so we only paid a dollar or two for parking for the whole night. Not bad! FYI False Idol is located inside another bar called Craft and Commerce, so look for that and the huge DEMAND LESS sign in front. We checked in with the front staff, and someone came to bring us to our table after a couple minutes. The decor inside is super pretty with colorful balls of light placed all over the ceiling. Even though we went the weekend before Thanksgiving, they already had Christmas decor up everywhere, which made it feel very festive. We got a nice cozy table in the corner of the bar. The lighting is quite dim inside, so it was really hard to read the menu with the tiny words. We had to use the flashlight on our phones to read the menu properly. Most drinks on the menu are rum-based, as you'd expect from a tiki bar. The stronger drinks are on the back, as are the punchbowls for sharing. Since there were so many drinks on the menu, I asked our server for some recommendations. She said their two most popular drinks are the mai tai and a coconut drink called Nut Chi Chi. I tried two different drinks: Nut Chi Chi ($14) and Tuscan Toucan ($15). The Nut Chi Chi was delicious and a must drink for any coconut lover. The Tuscan Toucan was okay but not my favorite (I was expecting something more citrus-y). My friends tried the Ube Bae ($15), which is very strong on the ube flavor if you like that, Three Dots and a Dash ($14), and the Jet Pilot ($17). We landed in False Idol fir an after party. The choice can't get any better. Since we had reservation already, it was easy wait for us, in couple of minutes we got it. It is hard to categorize False Idol, basically False Idol is a Speakeasy with nice Tiki Bar theme. The speak easy part was very cozy. Area is crowded and loud and still you can have a nice conversation at ease. For drinks we took the holiday menu in our hand. It was more stronger and more flavorful then regular menu. We tried the following Zombie: It is rum based drink with lot of spice and citrus. Peal Driver: Aged run with citrus bitters Hint: Ask for Stiff Old Fashioned, you will get the strongest drink Jet Pilot: Its very tropical, not my type Misha the staff, was amazing, even though we had reservation, the table we got is standing one and not enough chairs. She immediately attended to that and gave us a seating table and made our time marvelous. Service and Staff was so nice, attentive, and gave great lot of recommendation for both Drinks and food. Finally made our way to False Idol during the Holiday Season and they are decked out with lights and festive drinks! We arrived at 7pm on a Saturday and were really lucky to be able to go straight-in without any reservation. We initially thought we would have to wait a for a while so that was a nice surprise. Inside is filled with Christmas lights and holiday decorations which creates a really cool and intimate setting. The space itself is not too large and so they do a good job of limiting the number of people inside at a time where you have a enough space for your group to drink and chat. I loved the system/service inside because you actually don't have to go up to the bar to order, but rather they have employees doing their rounds between those at a table and those people standing (us) so they were very prompt at getting our orders and delivering our drinks. The O.G. Banana Nog was a unique spin on the Egg Nog classic and it was really delicious! Imagine a banana flavored egg nog and boom that's this drink. The banana flavor went really well with the creaminess of the egg nog. We also got the Fairytale of York which I really loved too! This is much more in the spirit of mint flavors. Ellie was a sweetheart and had fire recommendations !
