Firstly, let me note that Fajita Flats has been closed for a couple of months.
Now for the story. My family and I have been going to Fajita Flats for decades - easily thirty plus years. It was a special favorite of my late sister and her husband, but we all had many many cups of the gratis vegetable soup.
The jukebox was upgraded in the last few years but I don't know how many times I heard "You Never Even Call Me By My Name", "London Homesick Blues", or "Mambo No 5", in those hallowed halls. Hundreds.
The food was classic TexMex - cheese enchiladas, sizzling fajitas, Shrimp Diablos, (mom's favorite).
We ate there so often I went through a phase where I was eating the hamburgers, pork chops, and grilled chicken while eschewing the more traditional fare.
I had several birthdays there which always necessitated wearing the giant sombrero while galloping around the cheering tables of perfect strangers on a stick horse. I was required to make that voyage many times as did my siblings and offspring. Not the elders though; they weren't quite that extroverted.
It was a familiar and welcoming place. Needless to say, we knew many of employees, some of whom had been there for the duration.
So here's the part
That breaks my heart.
Red Garcia, the owner, ran a great place. It seemed to us, just barely outside the crew there, that they were a pretty tight knit team. As noted, many had been there for decades.
But in the last couple of years, Red's health began to fail and he passed away in early May. We learned that Red had sold the restaurant in the months prior; estate planning presumably.
The new owner had already begun some much needed renovations and soon shut the restaurant down in what we assumed was a push to complete that job. Some big green plastic sheets were put up to cover the patio, the front and the sign on the roof.
And then came "The Note". Passing by one day, i saw a spray painted note on one of the green sheets. It said, as best as I can remember:
"Red stole our money. $18,000. Employees of FF."
If true, and I have no reason to doubt it, that breaks my heart.
Now I don't know the behind the scenes story. I don't know what happened to any of our old friends from there. I don't know who the new owner is, or anything at all about his intentions or plans.
But I do know that he had most of the note cut off and there hasn't been any sign of life there since then.
But Fajita Flats is closed. I don't know if it's coming back, but undoubtedly the old employees won't be there and it won't be the same.
Better? Maybe.
But not the same. We'll miss it. read more
