The guy in the office is nice enough, but don't waste your time with this company. 1. Maggots... Or something gross (see picture) 2. Not safe. The guy convinced my wife that she should get a ground level unit because the upper floors weren't safe for a woman. 3. Deceptive business practices. They sold us on a monthly rate that was actually an introductory rate (hidden well in the fine print, and yes, you could say this was on us for not looking closely enough). Then they sent a tiny half post card sized notice in the mail that was made to look like junk mail so we wouldn't notice it, telling us the price was basically doubling. The people at HQ were unwilling to budge, so I worked with the guy in the local office to get a cheaper unit on the floor that he told my wife wasn't safe (don't worry, I never sent her there). He told me the price for the new unit (which took hours to move all my stuff into) was not an introductory price... It was the real deal and would only go up a few dollars at a time, max. 3 months later, I noticed one of those tiny little postcards in the mail informing me that the price was doubling. Almost $200 for a crime floor, closet sized unit with maggots. And who knows if it would have gone up another hundred dollars in three more months. Needless to say, I got my stuff out of there and will never go back. My advice to anyone reading this: just throw your stuff away. It's not worth it to deal with these storage unit crooks. read more

They raised my rent by about 25% and they basically doubled my moms rent, and we have both only been using them for about 3 months. This neighborhood storage facility is ideal! I have been a customer for 4 years and have been extremely pleased with its oversight and services given by the onsite manager, Rom. He has overseen a renovation of the facility exterior (painting, landscaping, asphalting driveway/parking area) as well. He runs a secure and safe environment for the customers. The people who work onsite have all been great. This includes Tom, Paula, Dennis and most recently, Rom. These folks have been the only reason I've stayed so long. They are kind, responsive and hardworking. I can only hope a company that's so profitable is spreading the wealth. After almost 10 years here, I've moved out. Mostly due to the lack of bathroom facilities and the CRAZY, scheduled rent hikes. While I understand the issues of public bathrooms in the city of Santa Cruz...my understanding doesn't make bringing a bucket and toilet paper with me every time I visit my storage viable anymore. I'm to old for this. Isn't there some way even one bathroom adjacent to the elevators can be open and regulated? Pay attention to the scheduled rent increases in the fine print of your contract. It's no wonder storage facilities are killing it on the stock market. If you do the math, you will think twice about all that stuff you need to keep in storage. I have rented for 4+ years and my location is Santa Cruz at Fair avenue storage facility. I posted a complaint 1 month ago. They raised my rent about $50-80 per year. Homeless and tweakers roaming around constantly. However it got worse and I moved out. I made a payment by mail 3 weeks (9/16/22) ahead of time with a letter of my complaints. Note I have never been late on any payments. I pay all my bills on time. They called me to talk to me about my complaints. I gave him proof of renters INS to lower my rate around 9/29/22. After all that (in person) Rom told me I have a payment due. I said no I sent that payment on 9/16/22 with the complaint letter. Payment was due on 10/10/22. They obviously got my letter. I had proof. The check went through with my bank! My bank posted it. I showed Rom from my bank app on my phone. I took a screen shot and texted him the photo, front and back of check with Extra Space storage stamp on the back! He said he would forward to his accounting dept. A week went by and I called him and said well? He then said that he needed a bank statement. We'll that wouldn't be available from my bank until 10/19/22. He said that's fine. I said no, it's not fine. I paid it and I should NOT have to be going through this! After all it's their mistake! They should do the legwork not me. Finally I was able to print out the bank statement from my iPad. I don't get my bank statement mailed to me. I'm paperless. I went in person to Extra Space storage and it was during business hours and he was not there. Frustrated, I texted him and by the way he takes forever to text me back, on average about 24 hours. He texted me back saying to drop it off on Monday 10/24/22. (Also they stopped my gate access. I was furious. He unlocked it for me. I took precautions and moved all my stuff out. I took my lock and said I'm out. I'm done with you guys, this experience has been hellish) So I did, I dropped off the bank statement and I asked him to text me that he got it so I have proof since they tend to lose things. Then I get a letter in the mail for preliminary lien notice. Saying I'm 14 days late. My unit is locked etc. Two more instances of me feeling very unsafe. 1. The tweaker, a new one. Seems like he's trying to be normal inside the facility. I was in my unit moving things out and got in the elevator and of course the tweaker gets in too, he's quiet and ok in the elevator and then as soon as he gets out of the unit, he walks out of the gate and yells at the top of his lungs "f**k you." Then he goes on yelling and ranting and walking around behind ferrells. 2. I was in my unit and the tweaker walks by a few times making me nervous. I texted Rom to kindly make the rounds because I feel very unsafe. I got my stuff and got out of there quick. Rom didn't text me back until the next day. Gee, thanks. So EMILY, before you say call us blah blah blah, I did, I have. On the phone, texting and in person. I still want this cleared up. I don't like any negative anything on my record. I've asked for a number higher up, management, corporate or customer service a week ago, still no number. Rom Galeta is absolutely NO HELP. Meanwhile I looked for another storage facility and I found Statewide storage for a fraction of the price. They are really nice. Unit is clean and feels extremely safe. Renters there are hardly there, if they are they are business owners, they smile/polite and are normal. Doors are metal that roll down. Not like extra space where it's a door with hinges on the outside, where a thief can easily pop off the hinges to get in. So Emily, Rom Galera, if you don't want me report you to the better business Bureau and to post bad reviews (facts only) to Facebook, instagram, twitter or google fix this matter! ASAP! I got everything I needed the first day, within 1 hour. Didn't touch a thing in the unit for a year. When my ex-fiancé didn't empty her stuff out of the unit before the lease ended, Extra Space spared me a day to clear it out. I felt well taken care of! read more

Storage unit was broken into within less than 24 hours of storing my stuff here. Many irreplaceable items were stolen, including a variety of guitars, amplifiers, and other electronics. No cameras in the hallways, very little urgency in Extra Space's response. Filed a police report with no hopes of quick action. Their insurance claims take forever to process and I was ghosted multiple times. Hoping to receive at least some compensation for my stolen goods, which would be in due order considering I did pay for insurance coverage. I would not recommend storing your items here. This is not the only theft to have happened here. Honestly, considering this business' location and the surrounding social environment, I would not be surprised if there were people living in these storage units. $150/month for a unit may be a preferable alternative to homelessness for some people, especially because housing costs are through the roof in this area. Definitely sketchy. My advice: Stay away from this business, store your belongings with a more secure and competent establishment. read more

This company is the absolute worst example of unnecessary predatory price gouging I have ever seen in my entire life. I am an artist in musician doing my best to continue to live in the town I have been in over 20 years, after seeing so many amazing creatives be pushed out due to the outrageous price gouging going on everywhere in this town. But while it's all ridiculous, I would have to say that this specific extra Space storage is the absolute worse example of that. Even before the pandemic it has been an ongoing struggle and fight with them to keep them from continually outrageously inflating the rent regularly for no reason. Even after their elevator went out right when I needed to move a whole bunch of stuff back into my storage unit, and the 73-year-old man with a bad hip on the waiting list for a surgery for a new hip who was helping me had to bring many loads of heavy boxes up three flights of stairs, these jerks still continued to try to dramatically raise my rent short after . And then during the pandemic, before the government was putting limits on rental increases they were still trying to gouge and profit off of a horrible collective disaster while so many were out of work. It was disgusting really. But what really takes the cake is that after the pandemic, when rental restrictions came off, my 6x10 unit, that I had fought tooth and nail over and over again to stay at around 140-150$ monthly, which was already high for me, They Immediately attempted to raise to 240$!!?@#$ I mean seriously what in the actual f@#k!?! That would be like a landlord raising your studio rental price from 1500 to 2400$ in a single day! How could that ever be ok, ethical or legal!?! That means that they tried to give me a whopping 41% rate increase. , attempting to almost double my rent as soon as they were able to. Giving zero f@#ks about the challenging state the world was in at that time. I want you to consider too for a moment that while so many other businesses and people, as well as even renters were struggling through these challenging pandemic years with many people out of work and struggling to pay their bills, extra Space storage as well as other storage providers was not losing a dime or damaged in any type of way. If anything they probably flourished even more at this time with all of their storage units packed to the brim and being rented out and not being protected by restrictions set in place for other rented units, meaning that people still had to pay their storage unit even if they couldn't pay their other rents. But even considering all of that, this incredibly disgusting predatory company took zero time to participate in one of the most disgusting and worse examples of price gouging I've ever experienced or seen in my life attempting to raise my rent over 41% at one time. Now because I fought them hard on this, they only ended up raising it by about $40 , which was still a 21% rate increase, a rate that very much hurt me and was difficult for me as a struggling artist attempting to continue to stay in my town of 20 years, but which they, a company who had profited quite nicely from this difficult time for so many others, absolutely did not need and just did it because they were greedy asses and they could. I am currently trying to fight one more time for them to not raise it another $15 today! The last thing I would like to say is that the managers and workers at this establishment, who I've seen a few come and go in my time there, have been nothing but helpful and doing their best to be good at their job and help the customers. And honestly I feel bad for them because many of them seem about as disgusted with the situation as I am. It is not the lowly store managers that I have issues with, they are great workers just doing their job and trying to get by in this economy just like me. It is the owners and heads of this company that are notoriously hard to get in touch with and who are creating these predatory price gouging practices that are draining the community without really offering any value back with the astronomical dollars that they are raking in to the communities they inhabit and the impact that they are having among the most vulnerable among these communities. In general I believe that more laws need to be put in place on the predatory price gouging practices of storage companies like this. Extra Space Storage is really great, I was able to get an IMMEDIATE storage space on the same day I called & did an online reservation. I was even able to happily get a ground floor large 10x10 room, which was just what I needed, and, UNBELIEVABLY also got the 1st Month FREE! Wow! I'm really still in shock over this wonderful deal, only had to pay about $$39.20 for startup fees and insurance combined in total. With no obligation for a 2nd month or anything! That is just simply amazing. The phone setup of the account was easy, and meeting the on-site manager was very helpful and pleasant as well. read more

BEWARE. What good is Extra Space if its not Extra Safe? I recently had several thousand dollars of stuff stolen from my Extra Space storage unit, here are a couple of reasons I recommend looking to store your stuff elsewhere. (1) If there is a theft, the management will not report it to any of its customers. Wouldn't you want to know if there was a theft so you could check YOUR unit to make sure everything is intact? (2) All units in this facility are "protected" by cheap doors that can be popped off the hinges with a screwdriver. The units are more like closets than traditional roll-up aluminum doors. I.E. YOUR STUFF IS NOT SAFE HERE, and the photos of the interior hallways depicting aluminum doors ARE FALSE ADVERTISING - walk into the facility and see for yourself! (3) Junkies hang out behind the Ferrell's Donuts right next to the Storage space. They have a constant eye on customers unloading their stuff into the storage facility from behind the chain link fence. Took me a while to notice this, and its creepy. (4) The place is an ice box, freezing all of the time. (5) The units are absolutely disgusting. Soiled wood panels and cheap materials. Half of the units don't have lights. SEE POSTED PHOTO (6) The manager is a fool. I told him about the theft and he literally responded by saying, "well, there's not much I can do for you." Um, actually, there's a lot you could have done besides slide an insurance claims pamphlet across the table. (7) Extra Space has one camera per floor, and the tapes are erased every 3 weeks. Should you check your unit every 3 weeks to make sure nothing has been stolen. Answer: APPARENTLY, YES. For all I know it could have been an inside job. No one at the company seemed to take it seriously or care at all (including the regional manager). ------------------- Amendment to original post: Just for the record the insurance company (Beecher Carlson) has agreed to cover my stolen property after their investigation because it turns out that there was evidence of forced entry (scratches on the door hinges indicate someone just popped it off), validating my second point above. read more

The location always made me uneasy but this place had the only unit large enough for a massive amount of furniture I needed to temporarily store. No matter what time of day there are always folks lurking or hanging out here. There is a mobile home also on location so if you have an outside unit near the exit gate it can potentially interfere with accessing your unit. For some reason my usual storage lock wouldn't work because they painted over the lock catch or something and so I had to use a thin one that could have been easily broken. Lastly, the company continues to fee increase on a regular basis. I would shop around first before going here. I do not recommend unless it is an emergency/temporary situation. read more

My rent on unit has gone up $155 in the last 12 months. I logged in to pay for October & it was $77 more a month; this after $78 increase 6 months prior. I received NO NOTICE. I called to ask if it was a mistake & received no call back. This is price gouging at a time most of us disabled seniors are stretched to try to pay for basics. I might also add the last increase I was also not given courtesy of notice. Don't put your stuff here unless you can afford an annual increase of 120%i. Please be warned of their business practices. Unethical is putting it mildly. I started off 2 1/2 years at $168 & now at $355. But the last $155 increases I received no notice how is that even allowed? I had only been there a month and the elevator breaks down , a note on the door says it will be broken at least a 5 weeks.im on the second floor so I'm.expected to walk up and down stairs with whatever stuff I'm leaving or picking up?I informed the manager that I have a heart condition and this was not acceptable,! They responded with "the best we can do for u is u can make an appt Tues ,thurs or sat and someone will help u!? Well that's not acceptable or possible! So I asked them to give me a ground floor unit ,at the same price I was paying!? They refused that! They then tried to run the credit card through for payment with out my authorization! They have cost me now in the 1000s with lost work ,since I cannot unload my truck or pick up supplies!
