I have a small 2x2 until that was supposed to be discounted at $18 online. They force you to have insurance $14. Then the one time fee of $24. So I'm paying $56 the first month and $32 all the other months. Just put the full price online guys that's ridiculous. But wait there's more. If you choose to get your first month free you don't even get the discounted until you pay full price. You guys need to specify that online. Stop being. Sneaky and just be truthful with your customers for fucks sake. read more

I stopped by Extra Storage to throw some boxes into my unit today a few minutes after 7PM. I pulled in and parked and no one was around, just a couple people that were leaving. I literally unloaded my entire car which took about 10-15 minutes and just as I was about to go upstairs, the lady, Jamaica, came out and was like "We're closed". I turned around and apologized that I had no idea since I literally got in, parked my car, and there were people still inside. She was like yeah, I'm surprised you didn't hear me because I told you that we were closed. But yeah, you need to leave. And I was like, I literally didn't hear anything, when was this?? And she was like, I literally watched you come in and told you over the intercom. And I said I'm sorry, I literally did not hear that at all. I just finished unloading my car can I just put these in really quick? And she was like no, you need to leave. And I was like seriously? And she started walking away from me. And I said how are you going to tell me to leave after I literally just unloaded everything? Like you saw me come in and then watched me unload all of my stuff? You didn't think to come up to me and tell me that you were closed? She wasn't answering me at all, totally ignored me. So I asked her name and told her that I'll just talk to whoever was in next time cause that's just ridiculous! I didn't even realize they were closed, I wasn't aware of the hours because I just switched from PS. Literally terrible customer service. How can you claim that you told a customer the facility was closed, see that they didn't hear you, proceed to watch them unload their entire car, and then have the audacity to be like, oh NOW you need to leave. At that point at least let them throw that shit in their unit wtf! Smh. And then totally ignore the customer. That is ridiculous. Run!!! it's my recomendation. I'm starting a civil action against Extra Space Storage on 1400 Folsom St., and against some of his employes and his independent contractors. They broke and changed the luck on my storage unit. When I found out i was surrised and chocked. One of the employees broke the new luck and when I opened my storage I have realized that things were missing. They blamed the truck driver who works with them as an 'independent contractor'. One of the manager showed me the security video, police came, and we all saw people during 7 hours taking things out of my storage. But these were not small things. They took out a king size sturdy bed with a heavy orthopedic matress, my 4-year-old chairs, frames, bed side tables and what not. i was super upset, they robbed me!!! so when i was trying to understand, they said that i should talk to the truck driver, who could give me my things back.... and they had no responsability on it. There are weird things going on there. If you want to put your things on safe place, find a different business with employees with certain work ethicsl and decency. I called Extra Space Storage about 10 days ago to get a quote on storage rates. What I expected would be a 2-minute phone call took 10 or 15 minutes as I was given the total hard-sell treatment. The representative I spoke to tried to get me to put a deposit down no less than 4 times! I informed him that I was just calling for rates for my business and that I wasn't authorized to put down a deposit but that if he'd just give me the rates, then I'd talk to my business partners and get back to him. He just kept trying to get my credit card number. What's worse, he called me back at home 10 minutes later while I was on the phone with another storage company. Overall, the experience was extremely off-putting. The kicker of the whole thing (and the thing that prompted me to write this review) was that I just now received another phone call from Extra Storage... at 8:00 am! Hello, Extra Space Storage? After my apartment flooding debacle, I booked a storage unit sight unseen at pretty much the first storage place to come up in a Google search. The price was fairly reasonable for an 8x10 and they were having a 50% off first month special which was perfect since I only planned to be there 1 month. When we got to the storage place, the guy showed me my unit on the 4th floor way on the other side of the building from the elevator. I was surprised by how short it was! I couldn't even stand up in it! My movers told me this is not standard at all. The guy working at Extra Space did offer to show me another, taller unit, and one closer to the elevator but those were of course much more expensive. Getting the paperwork done was quite a hassle and they gave me the REALLY hard sell on purchasing their insurance even after I got my insurance agent on the phone and she assured the employee my rental insurance would cover my stuff in a storage unit. On my move out day, the staff didn't have keys to the office and were totally unprepared at opening. There is one elevator. 1. For the whole storage facility. What this basically means is that you are completely at the mercy of everyone else. If you have to wait 10 minutes for the elevator every single time, you have to pay your movers for that 40-60 minutes of waiting. The walkways are so narrow it makes it really hard to wheel the heavy carts around sharp corners, but also if anyone puts their items in the walkway you can't get around it until that person moves their stuff. I think this quote from my mover just about sums it up: "if you had a better storage facility this move would have taken about 2 hours less" P.S. Although no one every bothered me and I felt safe, just know that many homeless people in the neighborhood use this storage facility for their belongings and/or roam around it looking for work. P.P.S. This is not a good storage place if you need frequent access to your belongings. Hours are very limited (8am to 7pm on weekdays). read more

I had an OK experience with Extra Space with two exceptions. First the good: The location was convenient. Setting up the unit/account was easy. The people I dealt with on the phone and in person were friendly. Most importantly, I felt my stuff was safe and secure for the few months I needed to lock it away. Access to the unit was easy enough if I needed something. The Bad: They arbitrarily raised my rent by $10 after 3 months or so. Apparently they do this a lot. Be warned. I don't think rent control laws apply to storage. I have my account set up on auto-pay. My account was billed three days before my move-out and they will not refund the partial credit. That is pretty lame considering I pay $113 a month. Any other business would prorate me back $100 dollars since they will obviously rent it back out. Lame. I would seriously think twice before using their service again. I get the impression there are a lot of 'gotchas' and surprises with this business. read more

This place is bootsy as fuck. The only good thing about it is that when the crackheads who live inside of it fight, it's really entertaining to eavesdrop. During the year that I had storage there, my rates went up three times for no reason, and I eventually had to move my stuff out because I couldn't afford to have this space anymore due to all the increases. When I was moving out, we got harrassed over and over by one of the workers, and he lied to us and said that there was no garbage can for us to throw anything out, and shortly thereafter, another worker came up to us and said, "Hey, you know we have a dumpster if you want to throw out anything." Please get a storage space here if you like dealing with basic ass bitches. read more

Don't go here!! Horrible hours( who closes at 5 on a weekday?), a really inconvenient location. Expensive rates with hidden fees and penalties, inept staff. Especially the Latina lady behind the counter. They don't have a service elevator, so when you actually have to move things in and out you fight with this elevator that closes the door on you every 30 seconds and makes a horrible screeching noise to let you know. You would think that a huge storage place would have a freight elevator? Oh, and they have locked dumpsters. Stupid.. I secured the rental from Seattle before the move. Then, when I showed up, the guy said he no longer has a room of the size I needed. He offers to show me another room of smaller proportions and then goes on to tell me the $1 move in deal no longer applies because the room is a different size. How is this not illegal? If I were you, I would not go here. It is a scam. I ended up calling another one and they were very nice and did indeed honor their price. read more

Overall, really not a good place to store your stuff. I thought I locked in a low rate with them but ended up wasting almost $300. Here's why: I recently moved to graduate school in Santa Barbara with the intent on driving back to get my stuff a week after orientation started. I called in advance to make sure they were open; I should've known that the lack of responsiveness would cost me $300. Since no one answered and there was nothing out of the ordinary on their website, I drove up from Santa Barbara with a rental to get it all in one big swoop. What did I find instead when I got there? Over 5 square blocks of streets completely shut off from traffic by the one and only Folsom Street Fair. OF ALL DAYS, I absolutely couldn't get in -- it was completely blocked out by the friggin' S&M debacle. Now, I wouldn't say I'm a regular member of the whips and chains community so I have to admit, I had NO IDEA this was going and didn't do my research on when it would be. I had to rely on this business to properly inform me of a closure, and that they didn't do. No phone call, no email (I always opt out of providing mine to businesses), no update on the website, no answering machine message that gave notice about the closure. Nada. So, when I brought up the issue, not only did Extra Space Storage refuse to refund me my money for the rental and gas, they didn't even consider refunding me for the extra week that my stuff had to stay in storage before I could come back (AGAIN) to get it! So that leaves me out of $300 and a 12 hour day of driving. Truly an unfortunate mishap -- maybe I should've more closely monitored the assless chaps and leather whips 'n chains goings on in my dear old SF. Either way, I think Extra Space botched this one and I'll never recommend it to anyone else. read more

I'll start by saying that they really don't care about these reviews because some of these issues are ongoing despite seeing reviews about them dated from last year. I recently moved my stuff from the brand new (and better reviewed) ES storage out in what they call Hunters point but which is just a wee bit east of the Mission near the 101 freeway entrance. Anyway that place was awesome and I hoped to get a unit there that was bigger when I needed to store a lot more stuff. After researching the price it turned out the best price for the size was the ES Storage location on Folsom near 11th. Ok it's a bit of a hassle to move your storage but I did it for the price. Fairly big mistake! This space is a serious come down in just about every way. No security gate to get in with your car means lots of people just walking in and out and they look pretty sketchy. Tiny parking lot that has only 6 parking spaces with 2 seemingly permanently taken by a moving truck and a car that is always there. It is nerve wracking driving in there because of the people milling around and the other cars tightly packed in. They keep all the dollies and carts locked together and you have to get someone to unlock them every time. And they are not always in the office either so you sometimes have to stand around cooling your heels until you can get a cart to unload your stuff on. The storage units themselves are extremely janky, being large boxes made of thin plywood. I even saw a patched hole on the unit next to mine. Did I mention all the sketchy people wandering in and out? To be fair they do give each person/unit an individual code to get on the elevator to go up to the units. However, the elevator button still doesn't work and is finicky. I had to get help no less than 4 times in one session of moving my stuff in. That was very stressful for me. Although I can't confirm it there are several open stairways off the parking area that may or may not lead to access to all the storage units but I have not checked them out as to how much unsecured access there is at this place. The people there are nice and try to help and don't get reactive when you are getting frustrated with this broken down facility. I guess they are used to it. I will be moving out as soon as possible that's for sure. PS the $ thing and the extra charges and the every few months rate increases I already know abou,t but I that is just the way these type of businesses work. They want to get you in and because it's so inconvenient to move they take advantage. You kind of have to be prepared for it, do your research, read the contract and move out if you can't take it. I hope I can take it for another 4 months. read more

Nah it's alright. You wouldn't wanna go here at night but since they close so weirdly early that shouldn't be an issue anyways. We brought all our boxes and furniture here in between moving from one apartment in SF to the next. We chose extra space because it was conveniently close and cheap. The prices changed however after the first month and we ended up paying way more than we would've anywhere else. They were however always pretty helpful and understanding when we had issues with extending our storage unit lease etc read more

I had a great experience with this Extra Space Storage. Pricing is affordable, made all the arrangements online - including canceling the account after I vacated, location is pretty good, visible security, and being able to drive into the building to load/unload makes for clean rainy day moves. I think they also have a truck you can borrow for free?... I rented a U-Haul cargo van for $20 and I'd recommend that for personal flexibility. I only used this place for about 4 months and the first month was free. Ideal for short-term storage between moves. read more

I have had a unit at Extra Space Storage on Folsom for about six weeks now. I wanted to see how the first month went before Yelping with my review. So far ...so good. The facility is clean as a facility like this should be, however, it seems to raise the bar amongst other self storage places I've seen. The people who work here were great when I was shopping for a unit that would be the best for me and have continued to show the same willingness now that I am settled in. I have seen the people that may or may not be homeless and there has never been any problems or issues with them or anyone else. Everyone is busy with their storage space just as I have been. I'm reminded that I could easily find myself in the same situation given the right circumstances and I am thankful that I have a home, that this is just my extra stuff, and not the total of everything I own in life. Some good things... there is a good size moving truck available to help you move your stuff if you need one and it is FREE. They have a big elevator for big things as well as regular sized one for common trips. The hours are pretty good and work for me, however, Sunday's hours of operation could go longer than 4pm as weekends are when I am off and have more time. Not a biggie...maybe they'll consider longer hours on Sunday in the future. The place seems very secure and there are video cameras monitoring the place 24/7. I wish there was a water fountain...there might be one that I haven't found yet but the staff has provided a cup of water on request and I have learned to just remember to bring a water bottle from home. All in all, I am very satisfied with my self storage experience here at Extra Space. I think if you have storage needs and you're looking for a clean, safe, and reliable place to put your extra stuff, you will be very satisfied putting it here. read more

With the volatile nature of living situations in SF, I have had need of storage units several occasions over the years. I always come back to this location. I was very unhappy when they turned from Crockers Lockers to Extra Space, but the fact that they have the same gentlemen working in the office that have been extremely helpful and terribly nice, even when I was late in paying, kept me from jumping ship. The biggest down side for me is that they close at 7pm and have no units accessible late. It makes it difficult for me to get to for time to do anything with my space. Also, parking is limited. Sometimes you have to wait for space to clear to park and be able to unload. It can also be tricky for unskilled drivers, getting in and out of the parking area, and nerve wracking trying to watch people who can not even parallel park maneuver through the space. I will continue to use them anytime I need a little more room. read more

We've had the need to use storage facilities for business and personal needs over the last decade and the experience has been mixed. We are extremely satisfied with both the facilities and the service at EXTRA SPACE STORAGE. The place is very clean and well managed. From day one, Mathias and his team have provided excellent support and a willingness to "go the extra mile" when necessary. The most recent example is that we were expecting a delivery of two pallets of materials for an event the next day. The freight company told us to be available between noon and 4:00 p.m and that they would call us one hour before delivery. (We work just 10 minutes away.) We were in meetings all morning with phones off and at 11:45 picked up a message the trucker left at 10:30 a.m. saying he was pulling around the corner NOW. We zoomed across town from the client site and arrived to find that not only had Mathias received the shipment for us, he put it in our unit! That, folks, is exceptional service. No storage facility has ever done that for us! (Let us again say: "Thank you, Mathias, for saving our butts! The Paulaner is coming!") In addition to the extraordinary, the day-to-day is pretty great too. The facility is clean, easy to use and very conveniently located. We are extremely pleased with EXTRA SPACE STORAGE and plan to have a "home" there for our business for the foreseeable future. read more

Okay, this location gets a bit of flak in most reviews. Let's set the record a bit. 1) Best location to get a decently priced rental unit in a decent area of the city that you can get to with normal transportation. You're close the on-ramps / off-ramps for the major highways and you can usually find street parking or if you're lucky can park in the garage (space very limited). 2) The security is good. They do watch the units with live-feed cameras and are on top of the security doors. Sure, there is a line to use the restroom by every bum in the area in the morning, but if you're worried about that, it's only on the first floor and it's fairly minor. 3) If you're weirded out by the locals, yea, they're weird. But so are you. So now feel comfortable. Not sure about the rate increases everyone was talking about, but I had a larger unit then moved to a smaller unit once I moved a bit out. Transfer the contract. Fine. Confirmation letter, done. No hassle. I've been using the unit for just over a year. Paid my bills on time, no problems. Also you can pay online through the link they give through your email. It helps if you don't want to go down in person. Shout out to Leda! You were fantastic! Did a great job helping me with all my questions and the whole process was what I had hoped for throughout the entire process which was a tremendous relief for me and the whole moving stuff. The freight elevator helps a lot if you want to move everything up in one go (better than the passenger elevator). Almost everyone else that works there have always been on the level and helpful. And one more thing...so I'm closing out my account for the unit, as I finally cleared the rest of the stuff out. Leda goes to do the final check of the unit. While she's away, Matthias lets me know to review the service of the facility and asks me to mention his name ONLY in the review to let the bosses know he's doing a good job. And gave me his card. Well dude, I've mentioned you. To let everyone know, if you want to recognize someone's slimy backhanded attempt to take credit for someone else's hard work, you work with Matthias. I'm in the process of moving out of state and needed a storage unit to put some of my stuff that I can't bring with me in the mean time. I like the location of this place and most of the time there's plenty of parking right in front of the building or at least near it anyway. There's 2 spots where you can pull into for a loading/unloading area and it's convenient since it's near the elevator if your unit happens to be above the 1st floor. If was a fairly quick process to sign the contract and we were showed us a couple of vacant storage unit just to give us an idea of how much space we had to work with. It looks like the site is fairly secure as you need an access code to get in and there are surveillance cameras around. read more

When I first moved into the neighborhood I honestly thought it was an abandoned building! The building itself is absolutely disgusting and is obviously never pressure washed. How do you not pressure wash your building? The surrounding area is just as disgusting and extremely disrespectful to the neighborhood and their customers. The outside of their doors is filthy with litter, broken glass, needles, human & animal feces, cardboard, etc. I see them open their doors and gates and they do nothing about the filth. Made reservation, even went prior in person, showed them my home owners insurance policy to get discount, move-in day...they see you have all your stuff, signed papers and it did not have the discount, they PROMISED me that this is the way they had to initially set it up and for the next month on, the discount will be applied. Bait and Switch - Don't fall for it! You've seen the "Buy now and get one month free" ads online - don't fall for it. I rented a space online and they showed me a space that had a 5ft roof - good luck getting 2 boxes stored on top of one another. I was told it was a ground floor - when I got there it was a 4th floor. When I asked to see another suite - they showed me another one then took me downstairs and filled out all the paperwork - 55 MINUTES!! - then when he asked me to pay - he said "Oh, this one does not have a month free"... I called customer service the next day and they said someone would call me. THEY DID NOT CALL. I called back 2 days later and asked what was happening and they told me that they "Dropped the ball" - and that someone would call within 2 hours. THEY DID NOT CALL I called back, now 4 days later and the guy gave me the "Secret number" to customer service that they don't want to give out. which is 916-786-2101 So I called that number and was told that they would "work on it and get some resolution for me" but he needed until Tuesday (this was thursday when I called). When I finally got a call back they said -"that it is an old building and they cannot control the kind of storage that I get when I sign up online" and that they would not honor the one free month that I was asking for. All I can say is that I am glad that I used my own lock to secure my storage. read more

My unit was burglarized! All of the silver, china, crystal, collectibles, small flat screen tv, living room lamps, clothes -- gone! And they had a lot of time to do the job. They went through some of the boxes to dig out the really good stuff. My unit had been totally ransacked. No camera footage or records of the alarmed unit door resetting itself. Told by manager Mike that is was just too much footage to go through. Also, they were having problems with their alarm system in December, January, and February. Mike said he conducted an investigation but I do not believe him. The whole thing stinks. Beware!!! No reliable security systems in place, arbitrary rent increases, uncooperative staff, and really sketchy people always loitering around. When I discovered that the alarm system was a failure, I requested a rent rebate for the month of February. I was denied because, "That's what insurance is for." Nice way to do business!! read more
