We stored our furniture at Extra Space Storage in San Diego for about four months while we were away for the summer. When we came back, we found the floor completely soaked with water, and many of our belongings were badly damaged -- including three mattresses, their toppers, waterproof covers, storage bags, and several household appliances and furniture pieces. The total loss was over $8,000. The water clearly came from the facility itself, seeping through the side and back walls of the storage unit. We have clear photo evidence showing large water marks in front of the unit, which means the flooding was visible for some time but completely ignored by management. When we first reported the issue, the on-site manager admitted that they did not even know what was behind their facility, which shows a serious lack of inspection and maintenance. Later, when we discussed the damage and requested compensation, the district manager got involved -- but he refused to take any responsibility or offer any compensation or refund. Although we had insurance, it only covered $2,000, far below our actual losses. The facility refused to refund the four months of storage rent, even though the unit was clearly unsafe and caused extensive damage. This was a truly disappointing and frustrating experience. We trusted Extra Space Storage to keep our belongings safe, but due to their negligence, lack of facility maintenance, and poor management accountability, we suffered major losses. I strongly recommend anyone considering this location to think twice and inspect your unit regularly. read more

The management here are new and very inexperienced and even though they advertise hours of 6am to 10 pm, you are not welcome to visit more than 30 minutes. They actually called the police because I insisted I was able to come between the hours of 6-10pm. They said I was here too long , having been there one hour. The unit itself is hard to get stuff into and Everything must be taken out to the parking lot otherwise I blocked the aisle is sometimes it takes several hours to get my stuff in and out. Of course T he police sided with me because the posted hours are 6-10pm. Now they have put a lock on my unit preventing me from gaining access to my own property. Best storage experience I've ever had. I've worked with a few other companies and always found them to be rude and try to take advantage of their customers. Just moved in, to make room in cluttered garage and sort junk out. The whole process was EXTREMELY pleasant. I first called (no web reservation), and the girl was helpful to figure out whether to take advantage of the 1st month free or lock the "discounted forever price". Then everything was online and automated while she was still on the phone with me. Painless and even fun! Immediate email receipt. Then I immediately got a welcome phone call from the office, informing me that the programmed code (you get to choose the last 4 digits) is verified to work and padlocks are in place. The code was texted with a picture of the unit. I rented 10x10 double door which isn't that large but large enough to store a TON of boxes. I brought in a couple of plastic shelves that I was using on the patio to stack up boxes, winter beddings, holiday items, treadmill, etc., and now I can concentrate on junking crap in the packed garage. Although we can access until 10, it's difficult after dark. Of course you rudely end up blocking the rather narrow aisle to use headlights (please don't do it). Glad I decided to do this in the summer. I'd pay extra $30 if they had a simple room light. I was going to secure shelves inside the unit, but the possible spots don't seem to be sturdy enough to tie shelves to. That's my only complaint so far. I saw a security/office person patrolling as well. While I understand they don't want inconsiderate people dumping furniture, I wish dumpsters weren't locked. 1st month free isn't exactly free---you still have to pay insurance. If you plan to store fragile items, be sure to purchase earthquake insurance too. I seriously didn't expect this kind of customer service from a self-storage. For bang-for-the-buck in the area, Extra Space Storage worked out great. Before our move to San Diego, my wife and I checked out several storage spaces near University City/UTC. The storage lockers in this location are mostly drive-up. This made it convenient for unloading from the moving truck. The two spaces we got were not as "modern" as others in the area, but for storing our garage full of household goods, they have been fine. I reserved on the Internet two times. She returned my call even though she was headed out of town, and arranged for me to be able to get my stuff into the unit and come in the next day to get everything squared away. You think you're going to get a low price that you signed up for online, and then they list you at a higher price you end up paying more than you're supposed to. There manipulative, and rip you off. Clean and efficient. We live in SF Bay Area and my son attends UCSD. I store his stuff during summer break. This is cheaper, easier and much more time saving than moving his stuff home. We drove 500 miles through LA traffic when he moved in for the first time. It took a whole day and a lot of agony to navigate through Los Angeles. Using the storage unit, we started at 11:30 and finished by 2:00. Only took us 2 trips to move everything out of the apartment. I have a coworker who spent 3 days to haul it home. The facility is clean, and the manager, Margie, is a very sweet lady, and very helpful. The pricing is great, and they have specials on some units. My only complaint is the center divide on Miramar Road that's right in front of the driveway, which can be a little inconvenient when arriving coming from the 805 freeway, or when leaving and heading toward the 15 freeway. Bait and Switch is alive and well in the 21st century. I called the 800 number and was quoted a price of 251 a month for a 10 x 20 storage unit. Toured the unit with the store manager. I later got an email for a higher rate and emailed the manager who confirmed the $251 rate. Well, when I showed up today to sign the papers, guess what?? Now the price is $331 a month or $294 internet rate!! When I informed the counter person I had a confirming email on my quoted rate, she looked it up and confirmed what the manager had quoted! Even so, she refused to offer me the $251 rate. Maybe all the other positive reviews for nice service are legit, but BAIT and SWITCH is not!! Don't do business with these folks. read more

Margie was AMAZING! I cannot stress enough how helpful she was. I was in limbo between having to move out of my apartment before shipping off to Officer Development School in Rhode Island for 5 weeks and then having to have military movers come move me out 3 weeks after I was into school across the country to Maryland...needless to say a lot of moving parts and logistics.
