The Mahwah facility is next to a river (the facility flooded during Hurricane Sandy). Consequently it's extremely humid there. And their "climate controlled" storage units do NOT control humidity. Expect rust and malfunction if you leave steel objects and electronics there for any period of time. Mildew, mold, all possible and I've had a good deal of all of that before I found out. Also, I've been a good tenant paying for my unit regularly, but I'm rewarded with extremely high rent increases while I watch untested customers stroll in at huge discounts, only for them to find out they are being increasingly trapped by unscrupulous price gouging. My unit went up a total of 23% with two hikes inside of a calendar year. So expect it to accrue very quickly. The income is paying the founder from Utah and the wealthy stockholders who voraciously bought up other storage facility chains. Today Extraspace rents out 2.6 million units in 3,714 locations across the country acquired as a way of stilling competition: they are a robber barons out for a monopoly. Horrible customer service and lots of misinformation at inception of rental. Beware Beware Beware Raised rental for unit after I was told that it was fixed for 12 months. This NEGLIGENCE is truly unbelievable at this location. It is not maintained at all. These are just a couple of pictures of the extremely poor condition of this facility and the lack of professionalism is to match. This is by far the WORST company to work with for any reason, they could care less if you lose everything you own due to their NEGLIGENCE. When we found out that RATS had infested our units, destroying more than half of our belongings they did NOTHING, offered nothing, never took any ownership of the poor run down condition which allowed the units to be infested. Stay away from EXTRA SPACE STORAGE. The rates go up constantly and the professionalism goes down. Before you rent be prepared to pay double within a short amount of time. They are the most disgusting company to do business with. last year animals destroyed some of my goods. You will get postcards from them frequently with increases. The place is very run down and I am leaving them within the month. DO NOT USE THEM, there are other places nearby much cleaner and will not raise their prices so often. I would like to give them no stars. Horrible................... read more

THIS PLACE IS A SCAM. The initial rate they quote is only good for a few months and then they can raise it up to whatever amount they please. So after five months or so, your bill will most probably increase by 20%. Of course they don't tell you this when you enter into the contract. Go to a more reputable company where the rate is at least goof for a year. STAY AWAY from these guys!!! read more

My attempted use of their services was met with hidden charges,"mandatory insurance", and they refused to honor the online promotion I printed out from their website allowing for one month free. I rented a big space at exrraspace in Mahwah. Lost 20 years of my hard labor. So many dresses, rolls of fabrics, antique furnitures . That's hurt. The company didn't sent a letter to explain, apologize or offer compensation for the lost, nothing . We were ordered to clean up the space and so long. I spent 5 days cleaning. I ask the manager about insurance. She told me "we have no flood insurance, sorry." So everyone just cleaned their space left. The district manager is not answering the phone. We cannot find anyone to contact. Now I am wondwering if everyone is going to accept their lost and move on. Let me know. read more

My unit flooded because of a pipe that burst inside the facility. My possessions, including a television, were soaked in cold, dirty water. Know that because of the agreement that you have to sign with Extra Space, the company doesn't have to pay a dime in a case like this, even though they were at fault. Additionally, Extra Space hiked their advertised rate after a couple of months. Buyer beware. read more

I had a pleasant visit at Extra Space Storage. I found the facility clean and my unit was easy to get to. Lian was very pleasant and informative. She explained everything to me and even told me a short history of the facility which I found interesting. I would definitely use it again. read more

I've been storing some belongings in a unit in Mahwah for 17 months. My rental rate has been raised 3 times now, making the cost of the unit more expensive than other, better facilities in the area. They say the building is climate controlled, but when I recently visited my unit during hot, humid weather, the temperature inside was similar to the temperature outside. Also, the units are not cleaned or swept out after someone leaves. When I moved into my unit, the floor was quite dirty. There is not light in the unit. The facility is close to a creek, which can cause flooding of the area during intense rain events. During hurricane Irene, part of the facility flooded. I was living abroad when Irene happened, and I tried calling the facility for a couple of weeks to find out if my stuff was ok. But their phone was down. Calls to the corporate office were completely useless, as their customer service person told me that I'd need to talk an on-site manager at the Mahwah location. It was over a month before I was able to talk to someone in MAhwah who told me that my unit was not affected. I think the company could have done a much better job handling this situation. There is no good reason why the corporate office couldn't have served as the conduit for providing information to people while the phones in Mahwah were down. I would look elsewhere for storing your belongings. I plan to transfer my belongings to a nicer facility soon. read more
