I haven't had the need for a moving company in the past 24 years, but remembered how good they once were and decided to give them a call for an estimate for an upcoming move. A representative did set an appointment and came to the house, and fairly quickly I had an estimate. Some time passed and my wife and I decided to pare down the number of items we were going to move, partly to lower costs. I then called Walton P. Davis to ask them to return in order to reassess our move since so much had changed. I left message after message and was finally told that the sales rep I had been dealing with was tied up in Manhattan with meetings and that he would call me at the end of the week. I said I understood and waited for the call back. Figuring that a message may have been lost in the shuffle I decided to call again. The person I had been speaking to for weeks answered the phone and said again that the rep had been busy but that he'd asked her to call me to put me at ease, and that in fact he would be calling me. That was 2 weeks ago. Now, I might have been born at night, but I wasn't born LAST night. I can tell when I'm being put off. The only thing I can't figure is WHY. Trust me when I tell you that this company has changed drastically over the years, and not for the better. At this point, I'd have to be nothing but stupid to do business with them. Evidently, any quality of service or representation they may once have had is long gone. Do yourself a favor and spend your time researching movers that are not named Walton P. Davis. Useless. I feel I've dodged a bullet by not hearing from them. I price-compared a ton of NYC moving companies and J & G gave me a competitive moving quote. Additionally, the building I was moving into required a certificate of insurance (COI) and J & G was able to offer it for me for free. A lot of other companies charge for this. Before moving, I communicated with them via email and they always responded promptly and were very clear about what their moving package included. The day of the move, they called and asked if it was okay if they came an hour early. They were very communicative with me during the whole move. The lead guy (forgot his name!) assessed how many things I had and then discussed with the other 2 men on how to efficiently approach the move. The 3 men were over 6' tall and strong, and they were able to finish my whole move in a little more than 1 hr! I did not have anything that was easily breakable but the men treated my things with care. They provided blanket and shrink wrapping for all of my furniture. Everything was loaded up into their truck very quickly. These guys wasted no time. When I arrived at my new apartment building, they had already started unloading my things. I had my boxes labeled with what was inside (i.e., kitchen supplies, shoes, jackets) and they actually placed each box in the corresponding room. Best of all, there were no hidden fees. They ended up not charging me a processing fee that was included in the quote and gave me $40 off my quoted price. The movers were so friendly, communicative and professional, I will definitely be using J & G Moving again! I also wanted to note that on the day of my move, the street I was moving from was blocked due to construction. J & G movers did not complain or make any mention of that until I had stepped outside of my apartment building and noticed it. On moving day, I was stuck in traffic and took me longer to arrive than expected. I called them to let them know and they informed me that the crew start their clock upon arrival at the destination unfortunately and had to pay extra time, but I understood. On the day of our move, the crew arrived clearly high, reeking of weed-- and the smell lingered the entire day. They moved painfully slow; what should have been a 4-hour job turned into 7. They even disappeared for an hour between leaving our old home and arriving at the new one. When they finally showed up, the smell was overwhelming. They left dirty handprints all over our walls, broke several items without saying a word, and showed zero professionalism. When I contacted the company to file a complaint, the general manager was rude, dismissive, argumentative and unprofessional. He accused me of "trying to squeeze him for money" -- even though I only mentioned reimbursement for the broken item. He spoke to me condescendingly and wouldn't even let me finish a sentence. If I were the owner, I'd be embarrassed to have someone like that representing my business. The manager offered a $150 refund (out of a nearly $1,800 bill), claiming it was "out of the kindness of his heart." When the paperwork arrived, it was for less than what he promised. I called to correct it and never heard back. This company is unreliable, unprofessional, and dishonest. Save yourself the stress and choose a reputable moving company.
