** Pest infestation & scammy business practices: Avoid at all costs ** I rented a storage unit at Extra Space Storage (at the 312 3rd Ave location in Brooklyn) and moved my belongings in at night. The unit was dark when I moved in (because the lighting in the storage building is inadequate), so I didn't notice anything amiss. The next morning, I moved in the last of my belongings -- only to notice that the floor of my unit was *covered* with some kind of insect shell (SEE PICS) as well as mouse or rat feces. That meant my belongings had been sitting in this disgusting mess all night. I'm praying it's not bedbugs, but who knows. I was appalled and told the front desk immediately. They told me I was free to rent another unit -- but the only available options were far too large for my needs and significantly more expensive than what I'd initially agreed to pay. So wait... I have to pay extra because your facility is unsanitary? How is that fair? I politely asked them to waive the additional fee for the larger unit, since this entire situation was their responsibility. They said no. With an international flight scheduled for that evening, I was in no position to shop around for an alternative, so I coughed up the extra fee. At no point did anyone seem particularly concerned that my property might have been irreparably damaged (i.e. bedbug infested). No one offered to help me move my stuff out of the filthy unit or clean the biological waste (?) off of my belongings. I called the main helpline immediately and asked for help. They told me their escalation team would contact me. No one ever did. So congrats, Extra Space Storage -- you tricked me into paying more for a (hopefully) non-bedbug-infested unit. God knows what condition my stuff will be in when I get it back. Don't do business with these people. read more

Horrible Horrible Experience. Rent increased about 2 months in. Always dirty the people in the office have an attitude when u ask for a broom or mop because they wont clean anything. And/Or theyll pass U a broom and tell U do it yourself. The One and Only bathroom does not work so people are pissing in the stairwell or in a bottle and leaving it here. The front desk lady always eating never gets up out the chair always pointing and has customera open the door for her smh SUPER LAZY. People are getting stuck in the elevator so they turned them off and now everyone has to use the steps to move furniture and everything. I use my storage unit for work purposes so I can't complain on prices or etc, but what I'm upset with is that the storage facility is continuously not opening on time and they are closing early. They have listed that they are open until 7pm on weekday; I arrived at 6:45 to quickly grab something from my unit and the facility was closed, no one was inside, I even tried to call and no one answered. read more

We have had a storage unit from this company for many many years previously known as Life Storage. We were paying like 90 dollars a month at this location in Brooklyn on Coney Island Ave and Ave I. I did not receive any notice by email or by landline phone both on record of any increase, we were at this location for like 3 months or so. It went up to 175. This new company is made of hungry real estate developers. Again, NEVER in many many years have I ever seen this. I am a landlord and I adjust for inflation. This location when I moved in smelled like mold, they had serious water leaking. I don't know if they ever pulled up the flooring to look for mold. I cannot trust a company that does a bait and switch so fast. They will lose customers. I saw this problem online. So I know it is HUGE. read more

I would give this zero stars if I could. Be ready for surprise billing and bait and switch prices. This is basically one level short of a scam. My rent was jacked up 50% without my knowledge or approval and the company told me to kick rocks when I complained. They told me it was a "promo" rate even though that was never disclosed in any communications or documents, so I had zero expectation of a change. They also failed to notify me via email despite sending every other communication via email. This is 100% on purpose as I'm sure they know people will not go to the trouble of renting a uhaul and moving all their stuff out right after moving in and so intentionally engage in false advertising on upfront price. Due to my career I have been using storages professionally for decades. This is hands down my favorite storage facility. Storages are boxes and so nothing special there. Their boxes with doors and they all lock. What makes this place the best storage ever is the kindness and attention of the staff. The staff that are a part of this location is the best I've ever worked with. Flexibility, courteous, and all around great personalities. UPDATE: We removed our items from the storage unit (we used it only for one month as we were in the middle of moving) and again, the guys at the front desk were so awesome (Thank you Jermaine and Stephanie). The facilities are ultra clean, and the whole experience was so EASY. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that is looking for storage in the park slope area, or anywhere. I think it i worth it even if you come from a little away from here. It was super easy to reserve my unit on line a night before. They gave me a code to enter the facility and the unit was ready for me. I only had to get a padlock ( which is included in the price) from the front desk girl. I was picking between Extra Space, and the Cube Smart (right next door). The deciding factor was the many wonderful reviews everyone, but most of all Diamond received. And let me tell you, she exceeded expectations when I arrived yesterday; she gave me a tour; walked me through everything, and was just all around a pleasure. Buyer beware. Anybody considering renting with Extra Space Storage should know that they may hike your rent significantly (40%+) with little to no notice, even if you've been a loyal customer who pays on time. Story follows. I've been a tenant of Extra Space Storage for going on six months with my rent paid on time each month via credit card based autopay. The facility is nice, but nothing terribly special. However, this month, I found my bill to have been increased by close to 50%, moving from $154 per month to $222 per month. Upon calling the facility, the person on staff was short and rude, stating that "this was my new rate," and that I had been sent a notice by mail that this was my new rate. Eventually, she did offer a credit for the first month - but stated that the rate would continue to be in effect. I asked to be connected to a supervisor, and the only thing that was promised was a return call. I will update this thread if and when I receive it, with more information about how that supervisor attempts to resolve the problem. Setting aside the fact that I never received this notice (which is problematic in its own right), and that Extra Space Storage has no tracking in order to demonstrate that it was delivered, this type of rate hike is appalling. I understand that with month to month leases, there may be changes. But a 44% hike? That entirely changes the economics of the rental. With so many storage facilities nearby, I'd like to think that Extra Space would be happy to have my ongoing, stable business. But apparently not. I then reached out to the support team on the Extra Space Storage website, who had no capabilities to help me. Choice quotes include: "Chelsie: There is nothing we can do here at the call center other than ask the district manager to call you, but it sounds like the site manager you spoke to has already reached out to them." "Chelsie: I understand. We don't handle billing here at all, we don't even take payments. Sorry! The district manager is the best person to speak to about this. Chris: so there is nothing that the call center is able to do with anything related to billing or customer service? Chelsie: We can answer questions and get you in contact with the best eprson to address your issue. Chelsie: person* Chris: But you are not able to do anything directly, is that right? Chelsie: As far as billing, that is correct." In short, be very cautious before entering into a contract with this company. I agree with the other reviewers on cleanliness, professionalism of staff and relatively easy billing system. But read the fine print! They raise my rate every 6 months. I was a tenant here for several years. I would ABSOLUTELY avoid using this facility. A few years ago, a local business called "Premier Storage" was taken over by a national chain called "Extra Space Storage." Extra Space has figured out that once you move in, the costs of your moving out are inertia. So they raise the rent about 20% every six to nine months. So over a few years my rent just about doubled. They also have very high late fees, don't bill correctly, poor customer service, and more. At one point, the ceiling crumbled and poured dust and stucco over all my stuff. They aren't responsible, they said. "Just get insurance!" This was just a LOUSY experience for me. I'm gone now to a space one half the price, much cleaner, much friendlier. read more

AWFUL Experience - I have never in my life encountered such unprofessional and uncooperative behavior. Issue#1: I make the rent payment for December-Jan and I still get a call that my rent is due. Understandable - sometimes, system issues occur. The facility manager tells me it was applied inappropriately (doesn't apologize) and so he will reverse the transaction and I need to make another payment. I'm happy to do it however I need a confirmation of the reversal of the transaction for my record. The manager refuses to send me a confirmation because it is not company policy. Okay, but how do I know officially the payment will be reversed? I am told that I am being difficult and I find the facility manager talking to me in an aggressive manner and arguing. Issue#2: I called up the facility manager 4-5 days before the rent payment date because I was looking to move to a smaller storage unit. I am told I need to be present in person to show my ID but the facility manager could prorate my rent payment for the smaller unit based on my move out date from the current unit. I was asked to present my credit card details on the phone. I generally don't share my credit card details on the phone, so I told him I don't need to move out right now. I'll continue with the current account. To which, the facility manager replied that he felt insulted. (Hello?) I am told every conversation with me is difficult and the facility manager wondered why it happened. To me, it appears that the phrase "customer service" does not exist in his world. Avoid this place -- so many better, cheaper places right around the corner. Rude people work there. No refunds for partial months -- and when you inquire they like to raise their voice and be jerks "too bad so sad". When trying to downsize after a year of being there, they were not interested in giving me the "web rate" (their cheaper rate) or allow me to move out early. I get that you have your policies, but 1) there are tons of better competition in the area and 2) dont be a jerk about it. Other places such as uhaul and storage deluxe right down the street are cheaper and better with customer service -- seriously, the uhaul surprised me with excellent customer service. read more

Linus and his team are consistently friendly, accommodating and thoroughly professional. The Space: We've been in every storage facility in town, and this one rates the highest for many reasons, not the least of which are its professionally managed front office, well-maintained & secure storage units, dry & comfortable climate, clean & fresh-smelling atmosphere and easy elevator access. The Staff: Totally unobtrusive when we need to get our truck in or out of the lot. Totally helpful when we need assistance, e.g., a phone call to say our lights were left on. I fully expect them to raise rates every now and then - EVERYBODY does, though, so this isn't a reason to dock stars from this location. This storage facility PRICE GOUGES! After being an Extra Space customer for a year without complaints, I'm very disappointed to have to be giving them a negative review. Upon signing up for the unit, I was told to expect modest rate increases of five to ten dollars every 6 months. Sure enough, 6 months later my rate increased by ten dollars a month from $128 to $138. I wasn't thrilled - but I was expecting it and it seemed par for the course. However, now at the 12 month mark I received notice of a nearly SEVENTY DOLLAR PRICE INCREASE, bringing the monthly total to $206, eighty dollars more than when I had signed up a year earlier. I called Extra Space customer service to dispute the increase and was told that regional offices sometimes increase prices dramatically when they need empty units to sell to new customers. Large price hikes when demand is higher than supply? Sounds like price gouging to me. Further, a representative at the local office refused to transfer me to someone from upper management that might be able to help with my problem. Apparently it's their policy that customers cannot speak to anyone capable of making a decision. Shame on Extra Space for trying to maximize profit by screwing their customers. I paid every bill on time and would not have balked at another modest ten dollar rent increase - but a 60% hike is a different story. As far as the storage space and the facilities, I have no complaints. The hallways were always clean, it seemed secure and the employees were helpful as long as they don't have their hand in your pocket. However, none of this excuses such poor business practices. I believe they're banking on the fact that their customers don't have the time or energy to move their belongings to avoid steep rate increase. I know I'd certainly prefer not to, but I also won't stand by and be taken advantage of. If someone from the Extra Space management wants to make this right, I'd love to hear from you. read more

BEWARE THE BAIT AND SWITCH. Signed up for a 10x5 storage space at the "internet rate" of $116/month in March 2018. Was happy with that rate and the facility was fine. Autopayed on credit card for 5 months, and then noticed the charge last month was $248 - more than double. Called to ask what was up and was told they can increase the rate at any time they wish - for any amount. And clearly they DO THAT. After much complaining and negotiating they have reduced the increase so I'm now paying $212/month, nearly $100 more than I signed up for. They warned me that warned they'll probably raise it again in 5-6 months. TERRIBLE BUSINESS PRACTICES BORDERING ON FRAUD. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

My experience with this company so far (before moving) has been outstanding. Their website makes it very easy to sign up, and I received an email and confirmation call immediately after doing so. I spoke with staff twice after signing up, and they are incredibly helpful and friendly, happy to answer any questions. And since they are very local for anyone in Carroll Gardens or Gowanus, they are also very convenient! It has taken a great weight off of me to deal with a storage company this polite and professional. Having now moved my stuff into Extra Space Storage, I can also confirm the reviews of others: that the front office staff are friendly and professional. They guide you through the entire process. The place is secure, extremely well lit, well ventilated, and CLEAN. (No food or pets (??!!!) allowed. It was easy to find my unit, and the web site's guiding pages for how to select the right size proved to be quite accurate. I am so relieved that I found this place. It's great. Update: one year later, I moved my stuff out of Extra Space Storage. They prorated the amount for the number of days since my last payment. The checkout process was straightforward and simple. The unit and the environs were as spotless as one year ago. There is now a giant storage place right next door. I don't know what the prices there are, but I would strongly encourage people to store at Extra Space. I would without question use it again. read more

Is it weird to be so excited about a storage space? We needed a large-ish room for about 2 months while we were subletting between leases. Extra Space on 3rd Ave in Gowanus had exactly what we needed, & when I went online, they were running a first month free special, so we hopped on it. Now, it's not quite as cheap as the American Self-Storage in Clinton Hill, but it is far cleaner, easier to load in & out of, & they're constantly piping Lite FM in the hallways, without a single dud - truly, walking in to Hall & Oates, MJ, Madonna, which I roll my stuff to & fro effortlessly is a treat I didn't realize I was missing. The staff here is outrageously nice. Everyone is super friendly, went out of their way to help us get the best deal, & even get a better deal than when we signed up. I needed to keep the space a few days into our third month, & they even just pro-rate the next month up to the first five days, so we were able to be flexible with our move without paying a full extra month. Awesome. My only gripe is that the hours are a little limited, they close at 7pm, which seems early, especially for people coming right from work. But I have to say, I almost didn't want our new lease to start, just so I had an excuse to keep coming back here (only half kidding). read more

Very nice, professional, accommodating, friendly, helpful, and -- as one of the other reviewers noted -- totally unobtrusive unless you need them, and then they're there for you. However, you should definitely read through the contact -- we were almost charged for an entire month because we didn't call to tell them we were taking our stuff out four days into the month. I have the contents of almost an entire apartment at ESS on 3rd Ave. From the time I rented the unit, I was impressed with the customer service. Well, after Hurricane Sandy, I was a bit worried about my unit as it located in the ESS basement. ESS called me a day after the hurricane passed to say that the basement did take on water and that I should come by and evaluate my unit & belongings. Lo and behold, some of my stuff was ruined. They had new boxes, packing tape, a dolly and a new unit on the 3rd floor ready for me! And the new unit was offered for the same fee as my old basement unit. It was amazing how understanding they were. They even threw out all of my destroyed belongings, took photos of everything for insurance and were CHEERFUL the whole time. I worked with Terri for the most part and she really was awesome. I am very happy with ESS! read more

If you need to access your unit frequently and don't have to worry about parking and broken freight elevators, this is the place for you.
