This is the absolute best smog shop in Lodi for a few reasons: they are very quick even when there is a line, they know exactly what they're talking about, and they are very understanding and supportive if you have any questions. In addition, the DMV services they offer are super convenient. I was selling my car and they did my title transfer and a registration renewal right then and there. My daughter visited her dealer (a non local one to Livermore, Dublin) as was told she needed ball joints to the tune of $2000. Her car is a 2003 Honda Civic with 126,000 original miles but this was a very high repair. I took her car to Cal State based on Yelp reviews and met Steve. I told Steve the story and he was surprised of the cost and he would take look He told me about an alternative that was much less costly if in fact she needed them ball joints. Steve did some visual inspections then brought the car into his shop for a few more additional manual tests and claimed that no ball joints were needed. He knew I was concerned for my daughters safety (a wheel could fall off if ball joints are bad) so he suggested the only sure fire way was to get a wheel alignment to check the specs out. I agreed. The test came back the front end was fine and just a few minor adjustments were made. Under $100 versus $2000: perfect. I have strong feeling his time and the test was not totally covered by the cost I paid and he just wished to help me out as a Dad. Steve is a professional auto consultant with many years in the automotive industry. He treated me, a total newbie to his shop, with a customer focused friendliness that provided me the confidence I needed to return the car to my daughter. Took my car to this shop today. I called the day prior and asked how much a smog was. He told me 48$. When I came in he quoted me 68$. I told him it was less over the phone and he ended up charging me 58 and saying I was supposed to tell him the correct amount. He finished the smog and I drove out of the lot to see my hood open sign on. I got out and went to open my hood to recluse it correctly and say a 1/4 in paint chip barely hanging on. I touch it and it fell off. Obviously a brand new occurrence. I take very good care of my Audi and know this was not there prior. The man most have slammed the hood and his large bracelet must have taken out a chunk of paint. I brought it back and he denied everything. I knew if he denied it I would just have to pay to get it repaired myself. The paint chip is all the way down to metal. No way I can just leave it. And a touch up pen won't do the trick. read more

I bought a cheap $3K beater so I wouldn't tear up my fancier car... It's a 19 year old Ford Exploder (1998) in great aesthetic and running condition. Driving condition on the other hand needs some work... I had a few suspicions of what was wrong but wanted an expert opinion and an idea how much this is going to cost to get her back to top driving shape. I've been following the mechanic there "Michael" around for some time now, I don't trust really anyone with my cars... Once you find that 1 good trust worthy mechanic it has its benefits to be a repeat customer of his or hers. The other gentleman working there also seemed very knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. I got the diagnosis for a really reasonable price and he showed me what was found and how it was bad... Both front upper and lower control arms, all 4 shocks (I knew that one because once you go over a bump or dip in the road it doesn't want to stop bouncing [like being on a boat]), oil leak from the oil pan and a leak from the front differential. Overall, considering its age and mileage it's not too bad but still more than I was hoping would be wrong with it, But it is what it is. I will be returning soon to start having the parts listed replaced as well as bringing my mothers car in for brake pads and rotors. read more

A total SCAM!! They advertised low price... highly recommended by Google...yada yada yada, ALL LIES. After getting repairs done, I brought my vehicle in to get smogged so I could register it. Well, as it turned out, the price was not $27.95 plus:$8.50 DMV certificate...it was actually $79.95, but they are going to give you $30 off making it $49.95 (Still not $27.95). On top of that, if your is a truck, they want to charge $10 more...AND if you want to get a STAR certified smog, which is required by the state in order to get the vehicle registered get, it is $10 more!! AND, if it fails, they're still going to charge you and they won't do a free re-test after you get the repair done(which, in my case, was just driving a few more miles so the computer system reset itself).that is required LIARS and CHEATS! sheets Actually, I blame myself I didn't do enough research. If you need an honest auto mechanic, this is your place. Steve is great. I have been there several times, and each time has been excellent. Great customer service and the work is always done on time. My last experience was the best, and something I have to share. My Kia was blowing white smoke out of the exhaust. I took it to the dealership and they said, "new engine, $9200." I had it towed to Cal State because I know Steve to be honest. He did a pretty extensive analysis and found a problem with the turbocharger. The car needed a new turbo, NOT a new engine. Total cost was a little over $1000. Because they took the time to really look, I saved several thousand. I'm telling you: an honest auto mechanic is like GOLD. Todd and Steve are the best! I got referred to Todd twice from separate people, one being his neighbor who is my client, and another friend recommended them as well so I figured what are the odds let's give them a go! I needed a trustworthy mechanic who wasn't going to ring me on prices because I'm young, and not very car savvy. I've gotten several jobs done here including engine mounts, failed brakes, emissions failures, my timing belt replacement and probably a few more things I can't remember. The prices he charges is always more than reasonable, his markup is very fair and he doesn't push me to get things fixed that aren't necessary. Steve has called me saying that they /could/ do a replacement of a part but due to the system and how it pulls engine codes, it may not be what's actually causing the issue and told me only to worry about it if it gets worse so I don't waste my money. He also doesn't half-ass jobs and explains why they need to do a certain job if it wasn't what I was expecting. They often perform diagnostics for free even if I decide not to get the work done. He offers oil changes for something around $25 which is well worth it when I'm busy. The only thing is these two are so good, they are almost ALWAYS busy. A lot of times if it's something major and you get it in first thing in the morning they can get it taken care of quickly, but minor things often need to be scheduled a few days out. It's not a bad price to pay for the affordability and trust factor. I've referred my mom here and he treats her just as well and fairly on both of her cars. I've recently bought a brand new car, so wont be needing Todd or Steve's services for a while but will definitely continue to refer people to them if they need an affordable and trustworthy mechanics! read more

I'm not a mechanic by any means but I've done enough automotive work over the years to know when I'm being lied to. Steve is totally upfront and honest though. It's really refreshing. I can't remember the last time I've done business with a shop that I've been comfortable enough to send my wife in by herself for a major service or repair.
