12/5/20 - I drove down to the Bay from Stockton to get my hair done, and decided I wanted to have barbecue for lunch. I decided to go back to Everett & Jones because it was worth waiting in line since we are going through a very mean pandemic. My lunch this time was very different from last time. My sliced beef was nothing but FAT!!! I had no meat at all, every piece was leather. My lunch with two pieces of bread and potato salad was $14.00 + tax. I will not go back for a while. I will patronize other businesses to see if they really want my business. Look at your food, before serving it, and ask yourself would you eat it?? Presentation means everything!!!! Today got two Brisket "Dinners" and one large side, for a cost of almost 60 bucks... and there was very little Brisket. Seriously... I know food costs are high but seriously? Pains me to have to leave this review. Ive been coming here for years & will not return. The beef brisket was tough & strange-tasting and swimming in watery, unappetizing BBQ sauce. The male workers at E&J on San Pablo have always been weirdly hostile, but the food was worth the attitide (and price). Sadly not anymore. Had a brisket and rib combo with " barbecue beans" and potato salad.Meat was tough and overly sauced ( big no-no for serious barbecue) but the taste was nice. Beans were standard baked beans as suppose to a more chili like preparation as the name implies. The potato was widely sour, and the cornbread was bland. I have been going to E&J's since the early 1980s when they stayed open until three and you could get a three-way combo for (I believe) $7.50. Many a drunken-stoned night ended with a plate of beef, ribs, and links on a paper plate with the sauce and potato salad and the white bread all kind of melding together. Damn it hit the spot! They already had started their collection of bumper stickers and the attitude of the very large people serving was notoriously variable which represented its own challenge. We also had a game that consisted of seeing if you could avoid flinching while one such large person chopped the ribs with great resounding blows of the cleaver. The clientele was a mix of local folks of every age and of course the stoner-munchy crow of which we were a part. It was either here or Flints up on Shattuck and Alcatraz (we generally prefered E&J's, though this was an ongoing debate--particularly since Flint's tended to be more generous with they portions). Flints on Shattuck shut down in the late eighties or or early nineties, largely because (I believe) the neighbors (understandably) couldn't deal with smoke and grease a BBQ joint inevitably produces (if it's any good) in endless quantities. Anyway, this review is necessarily marked by that nostalgia and the fact that I think E&J's links are still among the best I've ever had. The rest--brisket, ribs etc is so-so, though the sauce definitely does everything a favor (Texas BBQ fans, I know, I know). Anyway, like I said, this gets four stars for just still being there and for turning out the same food they turned out over forty years ago when I was in college. Now I will say one thing, and I suspect that this is largely simply due to the fact that this place is holding down a space in one of the most expensive real-estate markets in the country: the fact that a two-way combo has now gone up to forty bucks (I believe it was $25 before Covid) means that it's no longer stoner-street food but a decided luxury that is kind of hard to justify given the quality, quantity (definitely not what it used to be) and the location--University and San Pablo isn't exactly downtown Berkeley. Anyway, I had mixed feelings about all of this when I went back and forked out that much money...but sitting in my car and scarfing it down, it brought back some powerful memories that earn it an extra star. Talk about disappointment. I wanted to try this place for so long and it ended up being over-priced and extremely mediocre. Everything online was $6-8 cheaper than when you get in there. The brisket was mainly fat and was thin and chewy like cheap skirt steak. Definitely not worth $26 per plate! I'm sure this place was at one point good, but whenever that was is long gone. If I was the owner, I'd start brainstorming and lowering your prices. I for one will not go back and am happy to keep others from the feeling of being ripped off. read more

So this is one of my favorite bay area places. I'm a huge fan of BBQ so I will go the extra miles to get a good bite. My order is usually pretty consistent. Pork Ribs with medium sauce, and a side of potato salad. My ribs were tender. A couple of my ribs were small in size and one had some extra fat on it. My sauce was perfection. My potato salad was good. They give you a couple of slices of bread on the side. I must say, I was full once I finished my plate. Best part is, the food transports perfectly, so I can get back home which is about 45 minutes away. Last but not least, I appreciate the addition of the square reader/point of sale. In the past, they always required cash. I don't always have cash and forget to go to the bank. I was able to pay with my card today. I appreciate the social distancing and only allowing three people inside the building. Of course face mask are required. read more

There's levels to this ish. And the Berkeley E&J is by far the best and brightest shining star of this lovely lil' local- and Black-owned BBQ chain. (Does 4 spots qualify as a "chain"? Because when I hear that word, Walmart and Target come to mind--and that definitely isn't what Everett's is all about!) The Berkeley location, often bustling and forever bursting at the seams with cheeky bumper stickers plastered to every surface of the teeny establishment, is the most reliable and consistent Everett's there is. The staff are so incredibly lovely and kind and cool (Imma forgive the gentleman I walked in on rewatching the damn Playoffs game where the Warriors lost... #wheretheydodatat?) Slash sometimes when I smell the link plate I contemplate temporarily rebuking my vegetarianism and just going in on some. And don't you dare even start to suggest I'm not qualified to talk about their consistency since I haven't had their link plate in a while; my tribe knows good food and they tell me the meat is still on hit. Me? I'm slammin' slides, periodt. E&J locations sell either greens or green beans with potatoes and this joint sells green beans. Perfectly cooked green beans, might I add. So if you want the best E&J spot there is, head to Berkeley. All my boos there got you. read more

I was not happy. It cost $22 for a fucking sandwich which looked more like a link dinner without the second side that was not included. We got out of the car and INSTANTLY a smell of BBQ was in my nose. I was like wth!?!?! I might have to check this out when we done here. My girl as we walking in says did you smell that? I said babe, who could I have not? I was a bit skeptical inside the store about going there but I thought that the area was a little rough and rough areas know how to cook. After we was done with the ninety nine (took 30 minutes to leave that's a different story 2 stars) anyway, walked outside smelled it again and got in the car. Got in the car to go park in the front. One couple was inside and they looked at us like what u doing here? LoL the dude at the register says what chu want? I was like gimmmee a minute cause we ain't been here before. E&J used to be one of my favorites. I work in Berkeley, so I mostly freqented this location. My last order was not so great. The ribs were tough AF and the links were so old and dry. What the hell is in this potato salad? It doesn't seem to have any potatoes! Lots of mayo though, it should have been called mashed mayo salad. I waited a while before I returned. This location used to be on point, but after my last visit, I'm never setting foot in this place again. I didn't even get to order this time because I was so disgusted by the way the employees were treating the customers ahead of me. No one was going to speak to me in this manner, so I left. They were actually upset because someone asked a question about an item on the menu. And they weren't afraid to show how irritated they were when customers simple inquired about their menu, portions or the price. It was as if all the employees were having a bad day. Is that possible? I ordered the ribs dinner tonight with mac and cheese and green beans. The ribs are tender and very yummy with a smoky after taste! Big portions with 8 ribs that I only ate half of it and saving half for tomorrow. I'm very impressed by the mac and cheese, which wasn't too salty like others I had. I also really liked the green beans and its tenderness. I really enjoyed my meal overall and feel like it was worth the $21.99 including tax. The decor was interesting with a lot of bumper stickers. The ones that stood out to me were no saggy pants and one that mentioned condom which seem to be too much... I don't think that one should be there especially for parents with children who can read. Black owned business so happy to support this and black lives matter. I enjoyed the ribs meal here more than Horn's BBQ. This is my favorite among the many ribs I tried in SF and East Bay. Please open a restaurant in SF where I live!! It is a 25 mins walk from Berkeley Bart and free parking onsite. Outdoor seating outside without any indoor tables. There was no flavor just dry salty noodles. Honestly took two bites off this plate and literally threw it in the trash. I threw $18.50 straight into the trash. Happy news here. Nosh had raised the possibility that Everett & Jones might be closing down alongside its neighbor, the 99¢ Store, which is being torn down to make room for housing. I called yesterday to see if they would be open for pickup today and was told they would be. They don't take phone orders, so I stopped by around noon and placed an order for two meals, a two-way for me w/ ribs and brisket and brisket for Alan. My sides were their green beans and potato salad and Alan's were BBQ beans and mac and cheese, as they didn't have the coleslaw he wanted. I asked for mild sauce but forgot to ask for it on the side, so it wasn't. I asked the sweet young man behind the counter if their building was going to be torn down. He said lots of people had been asking that, but it wasn't. The construction would work around them. I went outside to wait for my number to be called. After a relatively short wait he brought it out to me rather than calling my number and having me walk in. I drove over to The Point, the glorious scent of BBQ enveloping my hungry self. When we unpacked it, it tasted just as good as it smelled! I had some of the ribs, some of the potato salad, some of the green beans and some of Alan's mac and cheese. They were all good, although the beans seemed a little saltier than they've been the past few times I've had them. When I have them next I will see if that's really the case. Needless to say, I have plenty of leftovers and will make brisket sandwiches for lunches a couple of days. I am relieved and happy that Everett & Jones isn't going anywhere any time soon. A landmark store. I've been to the MacArthur location and for whatever reason, it's not the same quality Q or service. Back Berkeley! I'm all about the ribs and links. The ribs are smoked tender and meaty. Hot links has the right amount of heat and texture. Of course, it's all about the sauce and the medium has the right amount of tang for me. First time visiting and I had to give it a try since I could smell it from around the corner. I will start off by saying it is a bit pricey but it was definitely worth it. The Mac and cheese was a little bland. The beans were compliment the plate really well. The real winner was all the meats. The links were extremely tasteful, the brisket melted in your mouth, and the ribs pulled right off the bone. All their meats are topped with some of the tastiest barbecue sauce I've had. This is the least appealing E&J I've been to. Been to at least 2-3 others; been to this location a few times in past but it had been a while. It's not bad, don't get me wrong but it's not a destination I'd travel for; I just happened to be in neighborhood. My brisket wasn't bad, but I like my cuts slightly thicker. Hostess was super-nice. Worst barbeque I have ever had. I have spent a good deal of time in Florida and Georgia and know barbeque. Brisket was bland, chewy, tough, rubbery and lacked any seasoning at all. No smoke flavor. No smoke ring. No bark. Not cooked and/or smoked long enough. Sauce was bland. Mac and cheese was dry, hard, brown and just inedible. Horrible. Had obviously dried out in the steam table all day and no one seemed to care. Chicken was dry inside and again no seasoning. Skin was soft and rubbery and chicken had zero smoke flavor. Green beans were obviously from a can and were a grey/olive drab color. Everything was awful. 1 chicken dinner, 1 brisket dinner=$43. I literally threw it in the trash because it was so bad. Extremely Disappointing About once a week we grab a bite out. Last night we settled for barbecue. We read earlier in the month Ms Everett had passed. My guy has enjoyed their food for years. He was in the area, so we opted to have him bring in the food. He called & we discussed our order. He even signed her memorial page. I am a lighter eater, so we always order a larger meal in order to share. He brought the food in & I plated it up. The sauce had the consistency of water & not much more than that in the way of flavor. The chicken was burnt. Not over qued, but burnt. The brisket was fatty, like over 40%, in was impossible to not have a mouth full of fat due to the meat being sliced so thin. The Mac & Cheese was nothing more than boiled pasta. Absolutely no cheese or flavor in it... On a positive point, the potato salad was good, potatoes tender & flavor on spot. We even ordered dessert, very rare for us. The 7up cake was moist & had good flavor. The price doesn't constitute the product. Over $40- for 1 meal, bright spot, we can at least share it with each other. The Covid distancing, 3 at a time works great. But when it was my time to order: The WORST customer service in US history!(In my world )The workers-they had dead eyes-looking like they hate their miserable lives. They stare and react they truly don't give a muck. The cashier actually laughed in my face when I asked the texture of brisket-right to my face-looking at each other and co-signing the ignorance and giggling. Hell, I've never had it before-"Is the texture like rib meat? The all giggle, cashier says,"Naw"-that's it-Just creepy. I actually felt afraid somehow. The tall rude guy handing out food-EGADS! Impatient, rude, disrespectful, tired cashier-very "#TheHillsHaveEyes". Creepy a$$ work crew-zero class. So how do you think the food was with that energy popping off?
