    Duzan - Shawarma Mix Bowl

Cuisine: 7 Service: 6…read moreDecor: 5 Value: 8 Overall: 7 With all the delicious options for food in Astoria, I am glad to see Duzan still succeeding after all these years. The food has always been freshly prepared, in large portions, and cooked quite well. I'm thankful that has not changed much. On my most recent visit, we got a Mix Grilled and Vegetarian Plate to share between four people. There was so much food that we did not have dessert next door as originally planned. Prices are higher nowadays, but you are receiving great value for what you pay. Both chicken shawarma and the beef kufta from the Mix Grilled tasted great, especially with the provided zesty white sauce. I also added hot sauce to mine, which made it more satisfying. The chicken kebab was not bad, it had a nice char, but slightly dry. All of the accompanying humus (a bit salty), salad, rice, and garlic pita were excellent too. For the Vegetarian Plate, though good, I would like the falafels to be fluffier. The best things I enjoyed on the plate was the fried eggplants and baba ghanosh. It also comes with cous cous, which was good. Fresh middle eastern cuisine, made with quality ingredients and care, this restaurant may not be my first choice in Astoria because it's not as sexy as some of the other offerings, but I'm glad that they are still around when I just want a quality meal at a reasonable price.

Duzan has several tables, a counter by the window so not a lot of seating but enough. It's a relaxed, casual vibe. The service is outstanding. Simply outstanding -- friendly, helpful...just puts you at ease. The food is pretty good too. The kufta kebab was delicious, the accompanying salad was as well -- if I had any nitpick it was that I didn't necessarily love their house sauce and the combo of pita bread + french fries is perhaps a bit too many carbs for my liking. Besides that, this is a great neighborhood gem.

Even with the crowd, the atmosphere was comfortable, and they had the game on, which made it a fun place to hang out. I ordered the chicken with mushrooms and a lime mojito. The chicken with mushrooms was a 10/10 absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The passionfruit lime mojito was too strong. The service was also great. Our waitress was kind, patient, and polite throughout our visit. Since my friends and I don't speak Spanish, we really appreciated how understanding she was while taking our order, especially since it seemed Spanish was her primary language. Overall, I had a great experience. The food, service, and atmosphere were all excellent, and I'd definitely come back.

For example, the chicaroon appetizer is a regular sized link that you would get in a typical Colombian bandeja paisa or the size you would get at a colombian bakery (the one that comes with a boiled potato). It came with two mini fried arepa cakes. Overall this item was fatty and the skin was not as crispy as expected. The tostoncitos with steak was 3 pieces for $20. This appetizer tasted great. Guacamole was smooth, and the steak pieces were well seasoned and cooked. Service was mediocre. The waitress came to take our order/provide water but that was pretty much it so 18% mandatory gratuity is a disappointment as there was nothing that warranted that during our visit. It looks like a potential spot for a date/pre-game night as they serve alcohol including mixed drinks for $16 and bottle service type drinks for table (ie: patron reposado for $200, aquardiente azul $200, and buchanans $200, etc). They do have a lunch menu Monday to Friday from 12-330pm that comes with 3 sides and an entree for $15. It seems promising, but I'm not sure I will be back. They also have Happy hour specials everyday, but we were not told of any when we sat down. Overall, I will probably not come back again. The portions/prices and service weren't amazing/spectacular enough to justify the mandatory tip %.

We are from the north shore of Long Island and our favorite Indian restaurants are located in Hicksville but no more. We now have Yaar in Astoria to go to. Run don't walk to Yaar. We happened to be dining there during a World Cup game so there was a TV on in the back (not sure if that's their usual setup). I ordered the chicken tandoori (bone-in), my SO got the chicken tikka masala, and we shared a garlic naan. I got a masala chai to drink and my SO just stuck to water. We did not have to wait too long for the food. My chicken tandoori came out on a sizzling plate with a side of rice. The chicken was so tender, juicy, and flavorful. I ate the slices of onion on the sizzling plate with the chicken and rice. The garlic naan was nice and hot, crisp on the outside, studded with plenty of garlic, and soft and chewy on the inside. It was good for sopping up the chicken tikka masala sauce. My SO felt that my bone-in chicken tasted better than the chicken that came with the tikka masala, so he would consider ordering one of the other bone-in options next time (butter chicken (bone-in) or chef's special chicken (bone-in) biryani). Service was attentive. The servers refilled our water several times and checked on how we liked our dishes. We didn't have dessert this time, but we might next time we come because there will definitely be a next time.

Not bad, but a tad simple. I also tried the saag paneer, since I was torn between the noodles and the saag pasta. This was generally pretty barebones in terms of spices, a bit too salty, and super rich, which I think would've made for a great pasta sauce but was less great by itself. The meal worked out to $50 after tax and tip as well, which felt pricey. Maybe I'd have felt better picking different dishes.

The Malabar chicken was calling my name because of the black pepper, and OMG it did not disappoint!!! It was SO tasty!! It's a dry chicken dish instead of the usual curry/gravy. Super flavorful, peppery, crispy, and not oily or heavy at all! It wasn't particularly spicy to me either, but layered with different aromatics, a complete flavor explosion! I was actually a little confused because I saw the Malabar chicken on Seamless but couldn't find it on ChowNow/Toast, so I wasn't even sure if it was available. I'm SO glad I got it and really hope they keep it on the menu because I would 100% order it again! I also tried the dal with green mango and the tamarind rice from the South Indian menu, and both were delicious. The tamarind rice especially has so many different flavors going on and is so good! If you like bold, layered Indian flavors and want to venture beyond the usual butter chicken-type dishes, TRY THE SOUTH INDIAN MENU!
