Mushroom
Daniela B.

This place was an incredible surprise. I came with an open mind as I'm Filipino so I try not to set expectations going into a part Filipino restaurant. But wow this place went above and beyond to create a lovely experience. The restaurant was small and intimate and nicely dimly lit as it was dinner time. We ordered the momo, duck, and longanisa and they let us know that it can take some time. The last momo order was actually taken but they were kind enough to make us some from scratch. And then since the wait took fairly long, they gave us cauliflower and mushroom for free and when I tell you that this was the best cauliflower dish I've ever had in my life, I am not joking. I can't believe we were fortunate enough to try it and if I were to go back to this restaurant, I would a thousand percent get the cauliflower again. It's just so delicious. The other dishes were also so flavorful - I loved the innovative takes that they had! The owner and chef were friendly and knowledgeable. I could tell that the chef really cared about the food and in turn made me even more appreciative. Amazing experience, definitely recommending!!!

Very small spot in Astoria with date night vibes. I've never had Himalayan such food so it was a really good experience. I do have to say everything is very flavorful and highly seasoned. We got there during happy hour, so we both had a drink and cut each of the bites on the menu and then got two entrées. Both were seasoned in the same way, but one was pork and one was duck. Out of the two skiers, beef and mushroom, I would recommend the beef because it was seasoned like teriyaki ala soy sauce based sweet and salty. I could've done without the mushrooms. We got the gnocchi and the duck breast and both of them were worth the wait (we had to wait for both for quite). Overall, good food and good intimate space for a meal.

The blandest momos you'll ever have - Six steamed dumplings are arranged on a black plate, accompanied by two small metal bowls of dipping sauces, with a glass of water nearby.

I was so excited to try this place after hearing so many good things, but it was quite a let down. Ramro is a small unsuspecting restaurant tucked just off the corner of 31st Avenue. It's clean and modern feeling, but so, so tiny it's no wonder getting a reservation here is so hard. I started off with the momos, which were bland at best. Usually momos are some of my favorite things, these momos tasted like what beige would taste like if you could eat it. I went with the duck dish for my main course, which, in retrospect, was undercooked and I should've sent it back. I was sick to my stomach afterward and into the next morning. The rice it came with was extremely salty. The saag paneer is not traditional saag paneer - it's bland creamed spinach with some paneer thrown in. My partner's pasta dish was probably the best thing we had but still not great. Overall, a disappointment. I do not understand the hype.

Pricey but definitely unique, something worth trying at least once. The interior is crowded and always packed, so reservations are a must, but for good reason. I had ingredients and entire flavors I've never tasted before, and overall really enjoyed the personal/intimate meal I had. The chefs and staff were knowledgeable and engaging, great time overall

I'll say I really had high hopes for this place. This style of cuisine is quickly becoming one of my favorites and to have it in an elevated/intimate spot is a dream. But ultimately the food was somewhat of a letdown. The menu itself is fine, there wasn't a TON I was interested in for the price-point. There was no world we didn't get the momos, which I actually quite enjoyed. Certainly not traditional in their shape. The cauliflower sauce added nothing to them, but the other sauce was nice. Do wish the portion had been bigger (a comment I would make about all of the dishes). I thought I would going to love the shimeji mushroom, but I found these to be so disappointing. A little cold? And some charred. Flavoring a bit meh. The sukuti was not something I would have normally ordered but was fine to try. I'm not sure if I'm just missing the point of this dish and it was done correctly, but it was not only cold but a bit gritty and tough, which I didn't care so much for. Entrees: I had some difficulty as they were a bit pricy and none of them really jumped out. We grabbed the duck and the noodles. The duck meat itself was good. I didn't so much enjoy the vegetables it was served on top of or the sauce, but the fried rice it came with was the best part of the meal. The ramro noodles I don't feel I understand to this day. The flavoring was sort of strange in a smoky/burnt? kind of way (maybe burnt is saying too much but that's how I felt), they were lukewarm, and the vegetables were saturated in flavoring so difficult to eat by themselves. That being said, I think this place has a ton of potential. The open kitchen concept makes you feel so close to the action. And the service is so so kind. They're also on inKind, so be sure to get a discount through that. While I didn't enjoy any of the dishes enough to come back, I certainly could see this place being a lovely option after refining the taste in a few months.

Cheese ice cream for my birthday

My friends took here for my birthday for the chef's counter tasting menu. I had seen this place online or heard about it and was intrigued by the Filipino and Nepalese influences from the restaurant team. It was a cute spot to celebrate a birthday and I appreciated that they brought out their housemade cheese ice cream. I love a place that gives you a little treat on your birthday. The food was good, but not amazing, hence the four stars. I appreciate that they are trying to do interesting things and innovate but I do feel I've been to other places that do it better. It is on the cheaper end for a tasting menu though, which I appreciate, although I would advise against the supplements because they don't feel particularly worth it. All in all, good food and fun place to go out for a nice meal but nothing mindblowing or nothing that sticks out to me compared to some other more fine dining / bougie spots. I did take a lot of photos and labeled all the food so feel free to check out what they had on their tasting menu when we went.

This place is sooooo easy to miss as it's quite literally a hole in the wall with no extravagant awning or sign outside. You either know about the amazing food inside or you don't. It's located on a side street just off main street Boulevard and had it not been from word of mouth, I would have missed out on amazing Filipino inspired food. Seats a max of maybeeee 20 people (pushing it), we had reservations for a Sunday night. We ordered 1-2 of each item on the menu and let me say: food is divine. Perfectly cooked, seasoned, served. The servers are extremely knowledgeable about the food and helpful. Just note that the restaurant is really small and they were already sold out of some dishes by 8pm. Definitely coming back!

Tasting menu ("Chef's Counter") review: TL;DR: Good ideas, small portions, not worth the money. - Aperitif: A nice touch but a bit strong, depending on your alcohol tolerance. - Sisig Hopia: Probably the most creative dish of the bunch. Cute canapes with distinctly Filipino ingredients and Himalayan influences. The rice puff on the far right was standout. - Hamachi: I *guess* this was their attempt at kinilaw, but it just felt like any other crudo/ceviche dish that every restaurant has on their summer menu. Delicious, sure, but not remarkable - Lumpiang Seriwa: A total miss. The cabbage wrap was undercooked, making it too hard and chewy to enjoy. There wasn't enough sauce to accompany the completely bland and unseasoned vegetables, and what sauce there was shouldn't have been sweet. - Skate: The most generously portioned of the courses. A large, perfectly fried slab of skate that was crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and peppery throughout. The accompanying coconut amarillo sauce was nice, but common. - Long Island Duck: Tiny, tiny slabs of generically seared duck accompanied by a miniscule stalk of fermented greens that were way too salty, and fried rice that was under-seasoned. This was such a disappointing finish, both in terms of flavor and creativity, to say nothing of portion size. - Digestif: Another nice thought, but way too strong for most people. If port and turpentine had an illegitimate love child, it might've tasted like this. - Calamansi Ice Cream: A refreshing dessert, yes, but I couldn't really taste any calamansi flavor, sadly. The accompanying Filipino donut sticks were nice though. For drinky drinks, get the Golden Leaf if you want sober pandan or the Orange Cream if you want sober creamsicle. If you're craving ethanol, try the beautiful Origami for fruity and bold, or the Negroni for a more citrusy take on the classic. While the service was friendly, and the space was cute (if tiny), I just can't see myself coming back for this $100 tasting menu unless they seriously up their portions or design a menu that more consistently showcases creative Filipino/Nepalese flavors. Right now, it feels like Ramro is still in its "audition" phase.

A small glass containing a dark liquid is placed on a textured, rustic countertop in a restaurant setting, with kitchen equipment visible behind.

I've been here 2x in one month (technically 3 bc we got the reservation date wrong lol). And every time the food has been great! Pretty small place but nice ambiance.. service is p fast and I have had the pleasure of meeting the owner and the chef. Hi Ravi and Aaron! Our tasting menu was so delicious and the wine pairing was perfect. My favorite bite from here is definitely the wagyu longanisa... so juicy. And the sinigang reminded me of my childhood but elevated. the duck of course is a big hit too. Loved the sauce with the rice!! Would highly recommend and will be returning for the Monday night bites.

TLDR: young motivated chefs doing creative, new things; highlighting Asian cuisine in a casual / intimate setting. SETTING: The restaurant is quite small with a four seat counter, two small tables behind those sitting at the counter and five or so tables in the "dining room". When we arrived, the place was packed with every seat taken. Casual dining environment and good for any weekday dinner. We got the tasting menu at the chef's counter and had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated as they were running late. FOOD: The food was creative and delicious. I particularly loved the Kare Kare as they used mushrooms like a noodle in a vegetarian curry that I have never had anything like. I also loved the Hiramisa as the fish was incredibly fresh and the skate dish was a standout. The broth with the perfectly cooked skate was just the right amount of acidity to elevate and cut through the more savory and decadent light fish. SERVICE: We sat at the counter and had great service by everyone involved. The chefs are very friendly and engaging and we were able to ask all our questions about the food and restaurant and have a great time. VERDICT: I put the emphasis on casual here for casual fine dining. The quality, execution and plating of the tasting menu signals fine fine fine but the ambiance and the "vibe" was very casual, fun and engaging. If I lived in the area, it would definitely be somewhere I would regularly dine at!

Came here for Valentine's Day and had their special tasting menu. The restaurant is tiny but the food is outstanding! We originally had reservations at a table, but ended up sitting at the counter which was even better. We ended up getting to talk to the chefs and it was great seeing 2 fellow Filipinos cooking modern Filipino cuisine. Everything was so good but my favorite dish was the papardelle. It had a ragu that was reminiscent of Filipino sisig. The noodles are homemade and the ragu went so well with it. The chefs even surprised us with their signature duck on their regular menu! The flavor combinations were amazing. The staff is so friendly and made our night special. We will definitely be back!

An amazingly small Southeast Asian restaurant/ wine bar just opened up, and I was eager to try it. They had a duck on order and specialty ice cream, which I ordered. Though I went by myself, it is probably better to go for a date night with someone. Oh well, perhaps next time?

AMAZING order this plate for your sure!! There are many things that can go wrong with a plate like this, Quedamos impresionados, perfecto

OMG just AMAZING Mi esposo y yo fuimos ayer y tuvimos que regresar hoy, este lugar es increíble, literal nos comimos hasta la ultima gota de salsa! cook to perfection! Is really exiting to finally have a place like this in Astoria, don't get me wrong Astoria has amazing restaurant and so diverse, but Ramro is another level, best restaurant in the world level!!

The biggest question then became, where to go? We needed a place that was relatively easy to get to that would hold close to 100 people. Jungly was a contender for several reasons - it's location, size, vibe, and menu all seemed to check off. It also helped that I had done business with the owner previously at one of his other spots. It seemed like the natural choice, so I went ahead with the booking. Jungly is located in LIC - it's a pretty convenient spot as its close to the LIRR and the subway. Parking can be a challenge, but luckily I found a spot only a block away. The space itself is nicely set up - walking in you're immediately greeted by the bar area with dining areas both to the left and the right. Due to our size, they closed the place to the public and we were able to freely roam the bar area and one of the dining rooms. In addition to standard tables, they have some lounge space and high tops by the bar. The vibe is somewhat modern - a black/grey color scheme paired with neon and golds. It looks like the space could easily be converted to a club-like atmosphere. Since we were here for a private event, the food was set up buffet style - we chose three apps, four mains, and two sides. Ultimately, for apps we chose pita bread with dips, steak tacos, and shrimp tacos. For mains we chose fried chicken sliders, smashed beef sliders, cacio e pepe, and roasted chicken. For sides, we got fries and Brussels sprouts. In general, all of the food was tasty; the strongest dishes were the tacos, fries, and the chicken tacos. The tacos were generously filled, the fries were the crispy skin style, and the chicken sliders were nice and crispy. The weakest for me was the cacio e pepe - not much flavor and just not really a standout IMO. My communication with management to set up the event were a little staccato, though in the end everything worked out. For the most part, my communication with them was consistent in the days leading up to the event. Service the night of the event was overall good - they were very accessible but I found that they could have replenished the food a little faster in response to the rate it was being taken from the buffet. The bar, on the other hand, was great - both in service and variety of liquor available. Overall, we had a great event at Jungly. They were professional, fair, and delivered on the goods. I would definitely consider hosting another event there, or dine here on my own.

The bartender, the one person who should be welcoming and engaging, came across as rude and lacked any charisma. On a Friday night, good energy behind the bar makes a huge difference, and that was completely missing. I ordered a margarita, which is one of the simplest and most common cocktails to make. I asked for it really sweet with plenty of salt on the rim. Instead, it came out barely sweet and with almost no salt. For a $17 margarita, I expected much better. I've had to return the drink because I've had better margaritas for $12 at other places. While waiting for my friend, I had to wait with a glass of water because I didn't trust the way they made the drink. The bartender told me I either needed to order another drink or move, which felt unnecessarily rude and unwelcoming. To be fair, the food was good and the space itself is nice. However, the bar service left a very poor impression. There are plenty of more affordable places where the staff are friendly and make guests feel welcome. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend this place. Give this place a 6.5
