We are visiting from out of town and my son's RC car had a part that broke while he was using it. We went to Eugene Toy & Hobby to buy the part. Adam provided great service to us. We not only got the part, but Adam helped us install it. He also noticed that a couple of parts on the RC car were installed incorrectly by us. He took the time re-install the parts correctly. Adam went above and beyond by providing us with great customer service! So instead of my son having to wait to use his RC car when we got home, my son can now use his car while we are visiting Eugene! The prices are great and the service is outstanding!! read more

Never been here despite growing up in Eugene, and my mom occasionally mentioning that she went to high school with the owner. This shop has been in Eugene for almost 100 years and has been in the hands of a single family (though I think in 2024 the ownership will change). I wonder how many other businesses have remained in Eugene for that long--especially that have remained in a single family for so long (maybe Dot Dotson's?). On my recent visit home I dragged my mom here with the kiddo. The shelves were a bit bare, which was a little sad and I think probably a result of online shopping. But they had some games, modern board games, lots of train stuff, remote control toys, and so on. I bought a cute little stuffed bat for the little one because it was the one she showed interest in out of those I showed her, and it made her laugh when I moved it around and its wings flapped. Haha. I know that Eugene Elites did a volunteer event here which is so awesome. It's great that the shop partnered with them on it. Support local businesses! read more

Went into the store today looking for some modeling materials, polystyrene sheeting and tubing. The store looked so small from the store front, but doing models I know what I need can fit into a small area from stores in my past. I walked through the doors and it was just a wonderful wonderland for any sort of modeling hobbyist. From RCs to modeling supplies. Trains, planes trains and automobiles. The store is surprisingly large inside by just being a deep, long store. I was very very surprised to find each section has an attendant, like stores from long ago. They knew exactly what I was asking for and where it was. I was only disappointed because I had to pry myself out of this amazing store before I went broke. I will definitely return for modeling supplies on the regular. They have a large selection of models and a surprisingly large selection of trains. I am not into RCs but they look well stocked from planes to cars. They have everything you need as far as modeling supplies, and lots of options. I cannot recommend this store enough. I can even see this store being a tourist stop, as it's just so well stocked and the employees are knowledgeable and very friendly. read more

Eugene Toy & Hobby must be suffering financial setbacks now that they have been purchased by Radar Toys because they can't keep staff, having let go many of their assistants, and their products are extremely thinned out with the majority being one only of an item on the shelf available for sale. It looks to me like Radar is probably planning to squeeze them out of existence. read more

I hadn't been to this store in years, but I'm so glad a Yelp Elite event reminded me that it existed, because this store is such a local gem and I definitely plan to return next time I need a fun gift for a kid (or for a kid at heart!) They have a great selection of STEM-based toys, as well as dolls, stuffed animals, and picture books, plus Legos, puzzles, coloring books board games, and so much more. They also have a good-sized "hobby" section which stocks all kind of model and RC kits. The staff are also so friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend this store! read more

I was in here in December to pick up some presents to donate. It is an interesting selection, with large sections of models -- cars, airplanes, boats -- and other crafting items. There are sections of science kits, so if those are your jam, there are plenty here to take a look at. I was more interested in traditional toys. They have lots of those, too. There a small section of books and stuffed animals, and lots of Legos and other varieties or items like Legos. They have lots of board games and coloring/puzzle books as well. The selection overall is fairly varied, but the crafting/modeling sections are the largest. The thing to note is that they are pretty spendy. That is kind of how niche places like this operate. To have the selection, with less foot traffic than a Walmart or Target. But it does have its own charm and a ready selection of lots of items that you'd probably have to venture to several stores to find -- or buy from multiple websites to get your hands on. I like this toy and hobby location. People are friendly and certain selections of items are the best in town. They are on the spendier side, so expect to bring more money with you. However, you should be able to find something for a child and you'll have more options in one place than you'll find elsewhere, so you'll save time and that is worth the money. read more

My dad and sons have all enjoyed shopping at Eugene Toy and Hobby for many years. i wanted to shop locally and was pleased to find that I could order an item online and pay for it, then pick it up at the store. This was on December 22nd; I drove an hour to get there. i could not find their store hours posted on their FB page or website - i feel like I have them a pretty thorough search. I called the shop and got no answer. I thought surely they would be open until at least 6 pm, given the busy holiday schedules of working people. I arrived at 5:09 PM to find it dark and closed up. I am pretty disappointed that I will not have the item for my sister to open at Christmas. i emailed the shop and have so far not received an answer either by phone or email - I would expect a small business to go above and beyond for their loyal customers. My first time in Eugene Toy and Hobby took me down memory lane for sure. What a cool place. I told Alan that I wanted a nice kite that I didn't have to actually 'fly'. I've had stunt kites but was looking for one to take out and just watch it fly. He recommended this beautiful 76" Dragon and just nailed it. As Murphy's law would have it we went over to Yachats on Mother's Day and there was literally 1-2 mph wind. The next trip there was a perfect breeze. It was so easy to launch and it just stayed up in the air as solid as could be. At the initial launch I captured my dog, Nikki, admiring her first kite flight as well. There is good reason this is the oldest toy and hobby store in Eugene...they have everything and the wisdom that only a show 80 years old can bring. Place is packed to the gills but love the amazing selection and it always seems like there is something new. I hear they are getting a website soon so this will open a whole new world for them. I've been frequenting ETH for nearly 20 years, that's what happens when there is a 10 year age difference in your children. This place has always been great, but the last few visits I have noticed the store is cleaner, more organized and inviting. I know taking care of customers, and all the small details can be a real challenge for small retailers (any retailer really), so i wanted to let them know it is noticed, and appreciated. I've walked by this place many times, as there is a video game store very nearby that my husband and I frequent, and I always tell my husband that we should stop in while we are right there. Unfortunately, it is usually just as they are closing and we don't have time. A couple weeks ago, we lucked out and were there when they were open. So we wandered in, as I had seen Lego model kits and really wanted to check them out since Christmas was right around the corner. We walked in and I heard people talking, although no one actually acknowledged that we had entered the store, and didn't for quite a little while. They didn't acknowledge when we left either. I was less than impressed by the lack of customer service, mostly because there was none. Someone said hi after we'd walked around the Lego displays a few times, and were in the middle of a discussion. Mostly because I was comparing the price of the Lego sets with my husband. I'm sure I pissed her off when I commented to my husband about the price, which I will get to in a moment. Their prices are absurd. I had bought a Lego set the day before at Costco for our nephew as a Christmas present. I really wasn't sure if I was getting a good deal or not, as I always think Lego stuff is expensive. I knew what I had paid, and it was $20 more here, even with a 20% off sale. It wasn't worth it. I'm all for supporting a small local business, but you have to compete. Which requires effort! You compete with not only prices, but customer service. A great example is when I go to the two gun stores I love so much, they keep their prices low. They tell me the MSRP on it, and then what they will charge, which is usually a fair amount off. Yes, it lowers their profit margin a bit, but it keeps people coming in the door and repeat buyers. There's also the customer service aspect. Talking to customers, engaging, understanding what they want, sharing knowledge. Stuff like that. It's what makes it memorable, and the reason you want to get behind the business and support them as much as you can. Sadly, there was none of that here. It was boring, sterile, and expensive. Will I return? No. There is nothing to bring me back. Their prices are absurd and they have no clue what customer service is. I find both of these issues to be very sad, as I love a good local business to support, and unfortunately, this isn't one I will be returning to. Review 151 of 2017. read more

I love this business for so many reasons. First off, Mark, the owner, always remembers my husband's name. When my husband was a kid, he used to go here with his dad who was a model train enthusiast. Now, even though he's all grown up, Mark remembers my husband and chats with him every time we go in. Mark was just a kid himself back then yet he still takes the time to say hi to us. That's just some awesome right there. Next, I build guitars and these guys have all the little random things I need including various super glues in a range of viscosity. I call here first when I'm trying to find specific paints or even copper foil rolls. They have stuff that even the glory of the internet can't find for me. Plus they save me from buying online so I can keep my money in town. That's good business for both of us. Finally, the toys are fantastic. We shop here every xmas for our nieces and nephews. Not only is the toy selection great, but they also have a wonderful selection of games and stickers and other small gifts. For older kids, there are lots of model kits of all kinds. Plus, the staff has played with the toys so they can help you figure out the best one for the kid. I don't really care if their toys are more expensive than big box stores since it's money well spent. Please shop here. Pretty please with sugar on top. I may cry if they ever go out of business. Wow, there are a lot of items crammed into a little space! They've got everything for hobbies of young and old alike. At least I hope all those older men were there for models and not cruising, ha! The staff is knowledgeable, willing to order in what you are looking for. My son and I have been going here for many years. They have everything. Newer toys. Old school toys. Models of every sorts. RC stuff. Games. Stuffed Animal. Even paper dolls!! We buy all gifts here cause we can always find something cool and unique. They are so knowledgeable and patient and SUPER friendly. They know our names and greet us like old friends every time we return. The prices are good. May be a few cents higher, but well worth supporting such a great Eugene family business. Only thing that could make it better is if they offer my kid a jobby-job when he turns 16 :) read more

Sigh. Like some other reviewers, I've been going there for many years as well. Fifteen at least. No longer. I needed a bunch of stuff on Saturday, and called them up saying I was driving and would get there at six. Would they let me in and sell me what I needed? (They close at six.) Nope! The actual quote was, "We'll be closed by then." I thought at six meant at six, not some mysterious time before six. I would have understood an answer like, "I'm incredibly sorry, but we close at six. If you can be here by then, great. But if not, we'll be closed." But I just don't get, "We'll be closed by then." I called the manager on Monday and said how disappointed I was; he said that the employee had done the right thing. A pity! This used to be a great store. What they sold was customer service, more than anything else. It's a shame that they seem to have forgotten that customer service means, you know, actually serving customers. read more

I lived in Eugene, Oregon in late 2014 and early 2015. A friend of mine who is a fine scale modeler of vintage war planes showed me this store. We at that time were into Dinosaur models and built a few using air brush techniques and such. I love this little place and its staff, and I've been frequenting it for decades. The only reason for a 3 Star rating is, one of the older male staff in particular is insufferable. Every time I have to ask him just a simple question, I get borderline angry sullen response, and even getting that is like pulling teeth.. Went in to Eugene Toy and Hobby on three separate occasions wanting to get our young grandsons set up with a serious model train operation for our newly created hobby room. Each time we were offered absolutely no help or advice. When we sought out a sales person for help we were treated like we were an imposition, both times they went quickly back to the conversations they were having. Feeling like we were a nuisance, we took the boys home and researched everything online with them and ordered from Amazon. This is an amazing store, and their customer service is as good as it gets. I was given an R/C airplane for Christmas from a son who lives in LA, and for reasons too long to list here, I wanted to exchange it for an R/C helicopter as it requires much less space to fly. Eugene Toy and Hobby stood behind their product, made the exchange without a gift receipt (they saw their partial price tag still on the box) and did the swap with a smile on their face.
