I used to live in Portland, where Books with Pictures first opened. During the 2020 pandemic, Books with Pictures opened after it was only a Kickstarter. The timing was unfortunate, but the shop owners handled it well with the excellent website. After Oregon started social distancing, I visited the BWP Eugene website and ordered a surprise package. A month or so later, I revisited the website and discovered that they now have an online catalog, so I ordered books--and the shop owner hand delivered them! I just recently visited the shop in person, and it's similar to Books with Pictures in Portland but not identical.

Dragonvine is a well-stocked store with something for every fan of comics, anime, and manga. I've…read moreshopped there several times and basically enjoy it. most of the younger workers there are pleasant and accommodating. Whenever I'm on that side of town, I make excuses to go there. Today I called to inquire to see if a graphic novel was in stock. The guy on the phone told me he didn't have "old stuff like that" ...when I'd purchased something like it from his store mere weeks ago. He told me to "come in and look for it" and we hung up. He'd been very brusque, and I hadn't felt good about the interaction, so I tried calling a few minutes later to say that I didn't feel valued as a customer, but I didn't get to complete my sentence. He told me he didn't have time for me and that "they were a busy comic shop on a Wednesday." Cool. I called Radar Toys and Nostalgia Collectibles and asked them for the same graphic novel. The first politely asked me to hold while they looked through their computer inventory, then apologized that they didn't have it. The second recognized the book and also apologized that he didn't have it. Y'know. Basic customer service stuff. A customer calls because they're hoping to make a purchase. If that's frustrated or met with indigence and condescension, why would they patronize your store? I don't like posting negative reviews, but I still feel gross about the interaction. I don't plan on returning to the store again anytime soon because of it. the other stores I mentioned have better prices, are closer to me, and have much better service.

Smith Family Bookstore - This entire room is just cookbooks and that's not even all the cookbooks!

I was really amazed to see this neat place right downtown for all your reading needs. It's like a…read moremini-Powells, they even have some of the rooms named by color. And it is huge! They had a shelf at least 7 feet tall and 3 feet wide that was just books about watercolor painting! And a huge room full of cookbooks! Books for youth are their own huge room. Most of the books are used but new books are discounted. Service was friendly. I will definitely be back.

Nestled in the heart of Eugene, the bookstore offers plenty of cozy nooks and crannies to dig through their vast inventory. As you traverse the creaking stairs and aisles of the bookstore, you'll encounter rows and rows of bookshelves lined with books from floor to ceiling, exuding a sense of nostalgia and charm. The layout is well-organized and labeled, making it easy to navigate through the different sections and genres. From bestsellers to classics, fiction to nonfiction, and everything in between, it's made abundantly clear the store caters to diverse reading interests. Whether you are in search of a contemporary novel, an academic tome, or a rare collectible edition, chances are you'll find it within the store's extensive collection. What impressed me most about Smith Family Bookstore is their competitive pricing for quality used books. The savings on art and reference books alone is well worth my two hour drive from Portland. It's common to find pristine coffee table art books for a fraction of the cost you'd pay elsewhere. I do love a bargain! Smith Family Bookstore offers plenty of cozy reading nooks and comfortable seating areas. These spaces allow visitors to dive into a new book or simply enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by the comforting presence of rows and rows of books. I'm totally in love with the vibe here.
