This has been a go to record store for me since i was a teenager decades ago. Now there are not as many records stores left but this one in Eugene remains a solid favorite. There is a good selection of new and used discs and records at reasonable prices. Well the used stuff is a good price, new vinyl of course is whatever the sticker price is and that is all over the place. I don't get to downtown Eugene as often as i would like but the times I get to do I always find something that i did not know I needed. So glad this place is still around. read more

What a charming and lovely record store which is housed in an old...house! They have a large vinyl selection with genres ranging from punk to jazz to ska to hip hop to soundtracks to indie etc They also have tapes, CDs, buttons, patches and more. Only complaint is that many of the records were filed sideways which made reading titles tricky, I like to be able to flip through record covers...but they're in a small house so makes sense why they have the records stacked the way they do to save space. Guy working was super nice and helped me find their well stocked (at least vs other record stores I've been to) Christmas vinyl section. They have a small parking lot out back which helps as parking in this part of town can be hard to come by. Would definitely come back and cannot recommend this place enough! read more

It is truly a house of records. Wall to Wall to Wall. A huge selection of records of all generes, including 45s. I like how the records are organized despite how crowded the space can get. I found a couple of LPs there that I didn't think I would ever find. Including an old record of kids songs I played to death 30 yrs ago. Worth a stop if you love albums. You could browse for hours. Many years ago I would have considered myself a philistine when it came to music. That was before I went into THEE House of Records, can became a true believer in the power of music. It became a ritual for me to save up $100, walk to the HoR and go to the counter and just say "tell me what to buy". Never have I been disappointed by any suggestion ANY of the wonderful employees have suggested. My massive music collection consists of almost exclusive purchases from HoR. Sometimes I would see a album somewhere else, and then go to HoR the next day to pick it up. A memorable story I'd like to share about HoR. I worked at another local restaurant in Eugene. They'd would call us up at night and come pick up some food. We'd give them a great deal, and the next day I'd head over to HoR and ask them how the food was, and chat about music. More often than not I'd get some awesome mystery shwag in my bag after my purchases. I never expected it, but it was like christmas discovering what treasures they'd given me. If you're into vinyl, HoR is the real deal. I had to stop myself from exploring the back half of the store on most visits, as to prevent myself from drooling. I'd also like to say thank you to everyone who works, or has ever worked, at House of Records. I am a much cooler person because of the many suggestions that were openly given. There are few truly independent record stores left. For that reason alone, House of Records and its brethren deserve five stars for keeping a vital and endangered tradition alive. But while I love its location and spirit, I would be less than honest if I didn't confess to a bit of disappointment with the depth of the catalog represented in the bins. Perhaps I came on a bad day. Or maybe it's been hit by the widespread industry malaise that you can't stock what customers won't buy. But whereas in years past you could troll the aisles for obscure titles and imports unavailable elsewhere, the limited new discs could be had in other retailers and the used inventory left much to be desired. (NOTE: If you have the cash, they have some mighty box sets!) The store's true strength lies in vinyl and the knowledge of the staff. Anything can be ordered online these days. But where can you go to actually talk music? I used to work at Tower Records and Wherehouse when what you knew mattered. Trips to Moby Disc, Pooh Bahs and Penny Lane were voyages of discovery. You would go with whatever dough you could scrounge up and spend it on the most interesting titles you could find. A bit treasure hunt, a bit wild goose chase, the joy was in the pursuit. That's how I found the Verve and Snow Patrol. That's even how I found my wife -- she was the girl responsible for spinning U2, my favorite band. Our pasts are woven through music. For those of a certain age, the days of independent music and bookstores shine with the lore of Camelot. Though far from perfect, they represented a time and space when our arts felt less like industries and more like forms of rebellious expression. House of Records still stands from that time and place. You can feel the presence of a bygone era in the walls and in the rafters. But like in my revue of Rasputin Records in San Francisco, what I'm left with is a bittersweet symphony of nostalgia for what was once and now is lost. I won't go all curmudgeon and bemoan the fact that time moves on. I'm grateful for what is and hopeful that the internet and other means and methods will spawn a new tradition with tomorrow's great artists. But for now we're caught in the spaces in between. God bless House of Records for keeping the light of independence burning and providing us a home to return to. read more

I loved the atmosphere of the place. It felt like a mix between a store, a museum and a friend's place to chill. I loved the wooden floors that sometimes vibrated when the bass was low enough on the in-store music. The store has a nice mix of CDs, cassettes and of course, records. For such a small house, it was packed with music from all sorts of genres from rock/pop to Tibetan monk choirs. My only criticism is that I wish the jazz CD section was just a little bit bigger. It's funny when I hear people say that record stores have all died because it is so not the case and a place like House of Records is clear proof. If anything, they seem busier than ever when I stop in, which is great to see. If you are looking for a good selection of new and used vinyl (and CDs and cassettes), friendly and helpful staff, good prices and just a cool environment with lots of history, the House of Records cannot be beat. The quality of the vinyl is also top-notch. They must be really picky when they buy LPs because the ones I find here are super clean. They don't have sales but it is because their regular prices are lower than other record shops in town. Plus, they have a frequent buyer program which makes it even more affordable if you buy lots of records. I am a metal guy and, frankly, their metal selection is probably their weakest point but I still manage to find cool stuff here on a fairly regular basis. And for all my non-metal needs, it is just awesome. Rock, jazz, soundtracks, new age, disco... pretty much anything you want. Good location and free parking in the back. I have been shopping here since the early 80s and, if anything, it is even better now than back then. read more

I always try to head into record stores when I am in a college town and I was glad I headed here while I was in Eugene. They have a good selection of new and used records and their staff was really knowledgeable and helpful without being stereotypical music/vinyl snobs. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time here if you want to cruise the rock and jazz sections. Also, these sections are set up like bookshelves so the fun of crate digging is taken away and if you're tall or have a bad back those lower shelves are hard to peruse. Business names are often misleading--have you ever been in a waffle/hot cake house that was in an actual house? perhaps not. Contrary to title, this event is pretty rare. If you visit The House of Records, you will find yourself in an actual house. How novel! A house with hardwood floors, records lining the walls, and with occupants who happen to be genuine and friendly employees. You will soon forget that record stores are places of music and personal judgment. They love to talk music, and once they find out your interests, they happily make recommendations and provide random trivia. These people know their stuff, from experimental to classical to folk to obscure jazz. Want to hear a record/cd before you buy it? Done with no complaints. House of Records also carries new and used cds and tapes, and by carry I mean they have more than just one album by one artist. For example, Jackpot has a diverse selection of artists, but they often only have one album per artist. Most of the customers are local regulars from djs to collectors to casual listeners. People come here to hang out, talk, listen, and maybe even eat. Who's more obscure? Who's a hipster? Who cares? House of Records doesn't, and I love them for it. read more

I love this record shop and could spend hours here. They a great selection and I always enjoy the music they have playing while I sift through old records. The employees are helpful when you're looking for something in particular and I feel that the prices are pretty fair.
