I got a chance to talk to who I assume is the owner and she's awesome and really friendly. Downtown Eugene finally has a record store, and it's pretty great! Moon Rock (located next to WoW Hall) is a true record store, as in they only sell vinyl. Well aside from some audio cassettes...and a couple record players & cleaning kits. No CDs. The store is small but the high ceilings prevent it from feeling too cramped. There's always good music playing. It's the type of place where you walk in and instantly feel 20 percent cooler. While the size prevents them from stocking a large quantity of records, they make up for it with quality curation. There's a lot of great stuff here, from blues, soul, jazz, hip-hop, dub reggae, metal and more. You'll find some used stuff alongside the new. There's also a good amount of 45s. I appreciate how the records are arranged so they're really easy to flip through. And the prices are very reasonable. I'm a big fan of their budget used records priced between $1 and $5ish. At most record stores I avoid the dollar bin because it's stuff you've never heard of. Not here. I found some fantastic stuff for a buck or two. Sometimes the cover is a bit beat up, but the record is always in good shape. Honestly, part of me is hesitant to give away this source of quality low-priced records... Even better, Moon Rock also hosts live music every now and then. They've had well-known bands do in-store shows, and also hosted smaller touring acts. Shows are usually free. This type of cozy intimate venue is something Eugene has been needing more of. You know what you probably shouldn't do in a shop centered around art? Shoot down the type a child asks for when they walk in. Look, I get that a record shop is likely to be run and frequented by hipsters, especially one this small, and that is likely to carry some stigmatic clichés, but for a young kid to show budding interest in an art form, pooping on it is probably not a great thing to give new customers to walk away with. If a nine year old can tell you are showing dismissive disdain, well gosh, bad form. On top of that the prices are meh, the 45s were in such poor shape two of them couldn't be played so that makes me glad I didn't spend more on larger records seeing as buying the little ones was just handing out free money, and the selection isn't very good. Not saying if you go in you won't find something you like, that's probably guaranteed, but there's just nothing there for me to get excited about going back for. We found better at the thrift store. I'd rather support a shop that supports the love of music as a whole, not as an elitist pursuit to feign superiority about. read more

I must admit, I had 'Record Garden' when I was a student at the University of Oregon. When I visited Eugene long after I had graduated with my BA (in 1998), I found Moon Rock Records. It was well organized. Personally, I would have out a few items ib different places but that is more personal preference than a complaint. I also found the prices to be very reasonable. The sounds made us want to move in a joyous way, which is deeply disturbing to our species. The toe-tapping atmosphere haunt us for the rest of the day. The record slave was knowledgeable about this subject, and had with her an animal known as a cat. This cat (or Erma, as it was called) was not wild, and apparently enjoys having it's fur stroked by hand. We laid eggs in it's chest just for safety's sake. Loved the vibe here. The folks holding court in the shop made me feel welcome but also gave me enough space to find what I was looking for. I wanted the r&b and soul section to be a bit more extensive but was very pleased with the diversity of music in their non-American music section. read more

Fantastic selection of independent/punk vinyl, glad to know that there are still some stores that don't just pander to the top 40 crowd. The woman who was there was helpful and answered all of my 11yr old daughters questions about random things in the shop. We both had a great time. The staff are great, and the packaging on all their items is a BIG bonus! I could browse their selection forever. However, If you're going here for dishware, none of the plates are dishwasher or microwave safe, and they tend to leak, or warp with hot food. I'm not sure why I keep buying dishes from them. It's really just the boxes or some kind of mysterious tactile thing, I think. They also had trouble retrieving my birth certificate, but one of the other customers suggested a helpful alternative, which obviously I'm currently utilizing, so, you know, all in all, most excellent vibes, attracts an affable crowd, worth a visit! I initially checked this place out cos a friend told me you could get weather reports for free or really cheap, and I figured even cheap is cheaper than a Farmer's Almanac at Albertsons is these these days, right? I am so happy to see another record store popping up in downtown Eugene. For the past few years I have gotten really into collecting new and old records and once I moved to Eugene I noticed there were only a couple shops to choose from. Even though this shop is small the prices are very reasonable and the genre options are decent. We chatted with the owner and she said that she plans to get new stuff in all the time so to keep checking back. They are also going to host some live music - awesome! There is a record player with headphones if you want to test out one of the albums before you buy it. I bought a Jimi Hendrix "smash hits" and a Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon album. Moon Rock has been around a little over a year, and it is a great place to buy new and used vinyl and cassettes. The shop is smallish but the owners have made the most of the space. Despite the size it feels airy, comfortable, and bright inside. The bins are neatly organized with a well-curated selection of new and used vinyl. Part of the fun of record shopping is flipping through the new arrivals and miscellaneous sections to see what you find, and the ratio of cool discoveries to rando crud is very good here. The staff will let you browse in peace if that's what you want, but is also happy to answer questions or chat about the goods. I've been in a few times now and always walk away with good stuff. This place really took me by surprise!! Great record store and not overwhelmed by records floor to ceiling. The selection truly is amazing. I only got through the letter "H" and found more stuff to buy than I thought possible. Good vibe to, you can listen to any record through they're ' listening station' equipped with headphones.
