They do not care for their residents. They're only in it for the money. Especially if you're a person of color, do not stay there for too long. Staff is unprofessional and disrespectful, you are mixed in with a lot of unsavory people you often cannot get away from, and you are expected to work for them if you can find a job within the nearest 10 mile radius. Cory Burket, the R3 program director, does not care about the people in his R3 program. David Helder also bears mentioning, as he can be a total manipulative monster the staff fully listens to whether he is honest or not in his reports. I feel Ray, the men's leader, is a bully and has no compassion for men in need unless they brown nose him. I talked to him on the phone and he bullied me and was annoyed with me for asking questions and going to Denver instead of him. Denver was polite and cared but Ray should go back to counseling school and not be in charge of men trying to get a life change and are mentally struggling not high like he immediately makes you feel he is judging you as. He is rude, inpatient and not using a good heart in his decisions and it shows from the complaints I have heard at my church he has not been to school for counseling and my church will not support this program until they get a better leader for the men's program. read more

I volunteer at the Mission and an honored to do so. Since the last review given, their focused has changed to Wellness. While they continue to provide shelter, food and community resource information for both men, women and children, they also offer a life changing program to specifically assist the homeless in developing the skills needed to begin a new lifestyle. Note: There are rules and routines that do not fit everyone. Attending Chapel is no longer a requirement. I highly recommend everyone tour the facilities and learn additional details. And volunteer. The residents here don't sleep. A leading staff member requested some relevant studies about sleep duration needs, so I thought it would be a good idea to make available some information below. Extremely strict sleep regulation (eight hours maximum "lights off" in a room of 60 people with no ventilation and chainsmoking bedmates) is a problem for residents of the Eugene Mission. People do need sleep, even homeless people. The homeless people here are not treated like people when they do not have sleep made accessible to them in a reasonable and kind manner. For some reason the dorms are made into a place for recreation and not for sleep, it is disorderly, bright and chaotic, and no one is in bed until lights are out. It is definitely uncomfortable to sleep under bright lights in a big crowd, possibly more uncomfortable than sleeping in a car at a business. Lights are not turned off consistently at the same time. I think it would really help residents if lights were off and it were quiet time after 8pm. Everyone is forced to wake up at 6am, so it should feel safe to go to sleep at 8am at the latest. Some people actually need ten hours of sleep and I've included information about that. Homeless people are most often not just "lazy sinners" as The Eugene Mission would have you believe. People need to feel socially comfortable where they live and sleep and rest. Pushing chapel to 8pm and having "second dinner" right after 8pm is disruptive to the residents potential sleep. Staff doesn't care. Not allowing people to nap is also sketchy and cruel. There are people here in chronic pain who need more rest. The Eugene Mission thinks it's being compassionate and helping people when it is actually stigmatizing people. How does the Mission expect people without shoes or rain gear (or a method of transportation) to find work? What does locking impoverished people outside in the rain help them? How about a nap instead? It's not like they can walk in those shoes or move through the cold. What about the lack of access to internet and computers here? Computer access needs to be normalized and unrestricted. Homeless people here are allowed only one hour of computer use. Nobody uses the computer because it's just a creepy set-up. One of the people who works here is clearly a sociopath who throws out or "fluffs" homeless people's computer-chip car keys. The case worker I spoke to I could not relate to. She was also really condescending and rude in the dining hall, and told me I couldn't sit where I was sitting because I was "dirty." I could barely eat at that point and was perfectly clean. She seemed like a pretentious and awful person, and she turned out to be. Homeless people leave The Mission for considerably less safe environments. People are treated like dogs here. I am spending the last of my savings at an expensive hotel because I would rather not develop further respiratory illness right now. Maybe later. I do not know that I will ever return, even out of need. If staff disagrees there are safety concerns, and feels sleep is actually an accessible routine here, I suggest they try sleeping there themselves, and try breathing normally for sleep around some of the heavy smokers. It doesn't feel safe, and it actually isn't safe for health. If there is a single fan in the sleeping room it will just blow cold smoker stench into your lungs. I became very ill. My physical health quickly degraded at the Eugene Mission. I was ok when I came in, destroyed when I left. If I had stayed I would have stopped breathing. If you donate to The Mission I suggest donating shoes of different shapes and sizes in very good condition. Homeless people need to walk. Donate coffee and dental gum and socks. Donate "powerful" fans. The room needs more than sixteen. There are 60 smokers sleeping together. It would get too cold in the room but it would be worth it. The staff won't open the windows and I think they should do it because people are literally choking to death. Don't donate money. Staff would eat it. Like... literally eat the money, and chew it up right in front of you. No one here is capable of organizing anything, or cares. The staff are mostly stupid and mentally ill. Some are vindictive. No one here has the desire to improve the sleep or health of the homeless. No one here cares about homeless people period, just religion. The people who work here aren't impressive or good people. When people can sleep, people can work.. If people can't sleep then they become suicidal, or accidentally kill themselves, like I almost did when I left. Suicide would be easy to achieve here at Eugene Mission. It is a completely abusive and out of control health hazard. The only redeeming quality is that it must kind of work for some, better than whatever they had before. I wasn't one of those people. Management of this place should be ashamed of this personally degrading and toxic environment. read more

I stayed there 3 nights a year ago and had absolutely no complaints. I'm not religious but had no problem attending the chapel services. You're getting food and a bed for the night. Is going to chapel too much to ask? I also stayed there for just one night about a week ago because my CraigsList rideshare was late by one day. A couple of changes. One, I was told they were full-up but since it was a "weather night" I could stay the night. If I wanted to stay the next night, I'd have to participate in a lottery. Fair enough, I guess, but I was confused why if I got a bed in the bunk-beds for the night how they could be full-up. I expected to be sleeping on a mat on the floor, which would've been fine. So whose bed was I sleeping in if they were full-up? Second, you don't have to go to chapel. Actually, you didn't have to last year when I was there. The difference now is that if you're not going to chapel the TV in the main room is turned off and everyone is expected to turn off their electronic devices during this period -- which, again, I was fine with. I recognized two people from last year who were doing the same thing I saw them doing last time -- oblivious to everything else and watching stuff on their laptops and portable DVD players. I bet these people didn't look for a job any that week, month, or past year. A shelter is not supposed to be a long-term place; unfortunately, there are lazy people who want to do nothing more than listen to music and watch movies; and I think that's pathetic, especially when I see able-bodied guys in their late teens and twenties staying there and acting like they're king of the world. Has this country gotten so second-rate that people want to do nothing more than sate their wants? Oh, and one more change -- the place is closed up from 1p-4p, which I think is way too generous. Myself, I didn't stay for breakfast and was out looking for work during the day. If I were the Mission, excepting the physically and mentally handicapped, I'd boot everyone's butt out of there by 8a and not allow them back until 4p. What incentive do people have to better themselves if they're allowed to lollygag at the Mission all day? And, again, many are perfectly able-bodied and could be out looking for work. Overall, I have high marks for the Mission. Yeah, there are several rules, but they're in place to ensure that the Mission is a safe haven for those in need. And I support them making you take a shower and place all your belongings in that crate, that way there aren't stinky people stinking up the dorm, and there are no idiots keeping you awake with their playing around with their friggin cellphones all night long. As for the food the article complained about, hey, it's free. If people want something better-tasting, hey, get a job and buy yourself a better meal. What, you expected steak and lobster? read more

It's like home away from home. Doors open year round, good service. Food needs lil work, but don't kill you. First time there was 2007, made a lot of friends they help you when need help. I been to Albuquerque Mission and the doors are open too limited amount for a short period of time. Reno Mission limited of people for a short time.
