I haven't been for a while. Always good. But the last two meals I had were just phenomenal. Quality excellent. Salsa had a great fresh flavor. Milanesa meal was very tasty. Add a little salt. Today was red chillawuilles. EVERYTHING I was hoping for. It would be hard to beat these past two experiences. They have gone from very good to hitting it out of the ball park. I've been an Estrella's customer since it was in Bonsall. I've realized this ages me, but I'm trying to show my OG status here. We're talking high school days. And let me tell you, I am in love with their food. Again, this is my opinion and my review so of course I am right, but what I am saying is that this is the best Mexican restaurant that I've ever been to in my life. Now, you might think I'm exaggerating. Again, I'm not. I've grew up in Fallbrook, sure, but San Diego (and SD county) is known for its authentic Mexican food. After all, we are just a hop, skip and jump to Mexico. So I've had my fair share of tacos, burritos, enchiladas, mariscos, etc. I feel if you are a true San Diegan, you know the words : carne asada, carnitas, pollo, cerveza...you catch my drift. So yes, I grew up here, but I've also traveled to Mexico, and I'm sorry but y'all having nothing on Estrella's. After all, it's authentic Mexican food- just in Fallbrook. If you don't agree with me, just stop reading now, if you are open to the truth, please continue reading. Here are the items that I've tried from here: fajitas, (which was my first order ever from here), ceviche, Mexican style shrimp cocktail, tacos, flautas, sopes, their steak and papas fritas (not my order but still tried it), and my all time favorite dish that I've ever had- their pollo en chipotle. I cannot find this dish or anything similar to it in all of the Mexican restaurants I've been to. It is listed under special dishes or house dishes, which explains why. Not only does it come with chips and salsa (which includes their signature puffy flour chips (drool here.. and ps who doesn't love these? I just want an entire basket of these, forget the regular corn tortilla chips) it also comes with rice and beans, salsa fresca, your choice of tortillas, and guacamole (no extra charge). But the pollo en chipotle itself is the star of the dish... for those of you who don't speak Spanish or Spanglish ... pollo means "chicken" and "en chipotle" would literally translate to in chipotle, but in this case it means with a chipotle sauce on top. As a precursor, I am a lover of spicy foods, but I don't think that this would be too spicy for a person with a regular palate. Instead, the chipotle sauce is a nice contrast against the warm freshly grilled chicken breast. I myself get flour tortillas and usually make myself a little burrito or two- first beans, topped with rice, then pollo en chipotle, top it off with salsa and some guacamole... my mouth is literally watering as I'm typing this. This dish alone is why I've been a patron for over 10 years. Do I get a free shirt or something? Lol Besides that, if I don't order the pollo en chipotle, my second choice is the Mexican style shrimp cocktail. Filled with large juicy shrimp, avocado, cucumbers, and onion, all in a tomato juice, served with crackers.... if you love mariscos, then you know what I'm talking about! Side note- I order a shrimp cocktail from here for the first time and in my life years ago, and they brought it to me with Tapatio and ketchup....when I lived in the Bay Area, and ordered a shrimp cocktail, they would never serve it to me without ketchup! Just the hot sauce! Apparently the ketchup with the shrimp cocktail is a So Cal thing! Also NorCal also doesn't have carne asada fries! See what I mean by San Diego being known for their Mexican food???!! Anyways, if you're old enough to drink, try the Mango Chamoy margarita. It's a mango margarita mixed chamoy or chamois or however you spell it... that spicy/sour flavoring they put on some Mexican candy. (It's like beer salt for Americans but better) Anyways, they mix it with the mango and they also put it on the rim (instead of rock salt). Trust me it is not to sweet, not too sour, just the right amount of flavor, plus it's really pretty when it's served! I wasn't lying when I said this is the best Mexican Restaurant I've been to. Ok Estrella's, I should have given you five stars and written a perfect review sooner. I am truly sorry the first review is not a perfect one because you do deserve it. But I always get the same plate and it always tastes the same. Well today was definitely different. The hard shell taco was most likely not made in house. It was made of a corn tortilla but it looked like it came from Del Taco. Sorry but it is true. The cheese enchilada with red sauce was probably the most bland enchilada I have had in quite some time. It most definitely did not live up to the Estrella's standard. I have you four stars because I really do not want to hurt your rating. I truly just want the old Estrella's back. Hands down best Mexican food in Fallbrook. Lots of flavor and not overcooked, excellent variety and quality ingredients . Chicken mole and enchilada suizas and on and on and on. Try the carne asada steak salad for lunch. At 8.95 it is the best I've ever had! If you never tried the rib-eye steak I highly recommend it too! We've been loyal customers of Estrella's for years and would go about once a week. We had a couple amazing servers that we always loved. However the last two times we've been there we had horrible service. They brought us the wrong drinks and wouldn't make it right. Months later we figured we'd try it again. We waited 30 minutes for a table while there were multiple empty tables then got seated and no one came so take our order. It took so long that eventually we were going to leave and then a server finally came. Our drinks took a very long time to make then sat on the bar waiting for the server to bring to our table. Eventually we just got up and got them ourselves. This took so long that we didn't have time to order dinner and when we told our server that we had to go we got major attitude. Horrible experience once again so we will not give Estrellas another chance. read more

We ordered take out on a Saturday night. The location was very busy but our food only took about 15 minutes. The employees were knowledgeable when I had questions about their enchiladas. So went to the "new" one in bonsall/fallbrook last night. So dissapointed in the beans. Our server said " the kitchen said the beans are not burnt".....they were burnt. Noise vs. Good Eats? It would be easy to say go to Estrella's for the chips and drinks. In my opinion they are truly the main attraction. The owner's sons with their big mustaches and wide grins are skilled in mixology and the chips include homemade salsa (ask for the green hot one - wow) and puffed up flour chips are super. However, the food is great too! For a light lunch I get the Chile Relleno a la carte with a small (can't handle big) margarita (total bill around $11 so great value). Their cheese is not that cheap stuff sold in a 5 gallon bag. If you love cheesy relllenos, this is for you. Also, they slow roast their pork for a day resulting in their carnitas being fall-apart tender and juicy with loads of favor. The enchilada sauces are complex and rich and they don't skimp on the meat. The shrimp cocktail is not only a presentation piece but is very fresh and tasty, albeit a little too picante for me. It can be noisy, crowded, and with long waits but it is worth it. Don't go if you're looking for a romantic quite evening. The ambiance is more of a local bar/hang out where everyone knows each other even if you don't, you will be engaged in conversation if you sit at the bar. You will walk away with a smile afterwards. read more

My wife and I were in the mood for some Mexican food on New Year's Day and we ventured into Fallbrook and chose to visit Estrellas (mainly because the only other couple Mexican restaurants were closed) we entered the restaurant and awkwardly stood up front for a few minutes before the older lady behind the bar finally asked us "for two" (this was after she had already made eye contact with me a few times) we said yes and were motioned to sit at a booth. I don't know if this lady was running the whole front of the house but we sat for another few minutes with ZERO service. The only way the service could have been worse is if we were told to pour our own drinks and make our own food. The lady working there seemed like she couldn't care less. I work in the service industry and know what good service should look like, it's too bad this place doesn't. I'm sure you'll get locals raving about this place but Denny's delivered where this terrible place fell short. read more

Lord bless Estrella's for ever and ever and ever Amen. Visiting from Los Angeles, we usually sample the local fare from a different restaurant each night. On Friday, we fancied some Mexican food, and there are some pretty good Mexican places in Falbrook, so I was a little reluctant to try Estrella's. We walked in to make a to-go order, and decided to have a quick margarita and some chips and salsa whilst we waited. It was extremely busy -- the kind of environment where you would expect the waiting staff to be stressed and unfriendly under the conditions. Not so. Everyone was charming and friendly and delightful. We sit down and the chips and salsa arrived. OH MY GOD. The fluffy yet crunchy texture of the chips sent me straight to heaven. When I dipped one in the salsa I was propelled to the second level of heaven. The Margarita sent me straight up a couple more levels, and by the time I had finished the generous exquisite main courses, I had arrived. Seventh heaven. Delicious, friendly, very reasonably priced, EVERYTHING family-made in-house; all of this culminated in what I honestly think was the best Mexican food I have experienced in California. My first and only time I was there was a while back and I was NOT impressed. Everyone raves about their food but I was highly disappointed. I ordered a crunchy taco and was horrified to see it was a store bought taco shell, like the kind you get when eating at Taco Bell!!! Then the margarita I ordered was way too sweet/sour as if it was just mix over ice. Maybe I went on a bad off night and I know I should give them another try but I have a hard time forgiving them for the crap taco shell. read more

We came here last minute foru girlfriends B-Day. First we waited 30 min. It's a VERY SMALL restaurant. That's why you see a lot of people waiting outside. There are 2 round tables that fit 5 on each, 2-3 small booths, 3 tables that fit 4 and 2 high tables that fit 2 people eh. It's very snug in there. We sat down, the waitress was nice. They brought out salsa corn chips and fried flour chips. It was greasy but good :/ we ordered right away ( we had plenty of time to look over the menu while we waited) Food came out in a timely manner. We never saw the waitress again. She totally disappeared. I ordered the carne asada fries. I get better at Alberto's. The meat was very dry. Like it was just sitting around. It had absolutely no flavor. My husband had the carne asada plate. NO BUENO!! Again the meat was hard and dry. He wanted to order a beer .... Did anyone see....... Our waitress ?? Or any other waitress for that matter. The restaurant is a shoe box. Where can she have gone?? Anyone? So my husband had to get up and go the bar to order one. My girlfriend had the sautéed fajita with all the meat and shrimp. It's not your typical fajita where it comes on a sizzling tray. It's basically all mixed together. Some of the shrimp had the tail still on them, some didn't. She said never again. As I'm eating my food I thought to myself. What's ALLL the fuss about this place. I looked around and I hate to say this but it's true. All I see is Caucasians. If you've had real Mexican food you'd know this food sucks! El toro market is literally on the corner. They sell 50 cent tacos. Soooo good!! Cute little family run place. My friend prefers the original smaller location, so we went there for lunch on Saturday. Had to wait a bit since it was crowded, but well worth it. I had the shredded chicken tostada and she had the fajitas. Large servings and I had enough to take back for lunch on Sunday. Had a "medium" Margarita...and it was as big as my head.
