I really like this café and I've spent a lot of my hours there studying, reading, chatting and enjoying my coffee. Scones here are great. People who work at this place are always nice and friendly. I wish the space was cleaner though. Other than that, Roma is one of my favorites. read more

The first thing a coffee hound will notice about Espresso Roma's coffee: high octane! If you have a heart conditon or a low tolerance for caffeine, stay away from the coffee, especially if you plan on sleeping in the next 4 hours. As far as atmosphere, it is by far the best place to go if conversation is your main concern, and the worst place to go if you have a mid-term to study for. Not being in college myself, I like to go there to draw, read, or just hang out. The giant Japanese maple that dominates the patio area and the red brick with which it is tiled make it unique. They banned smoking a couple years back, for better or for worse. Non-smokers are probably very happy about it, smokers probably no longer go out of their way to visit this place. LOL. Oddly enough I quit smoking around the time they stopped allowing it, so the change didn't really affect me much. The food is acceptable and affordable, and they have a large variety of pastries, croissant sandwiches, and other tasties. The baristas are friendly, the drinks are good and well-caffenated, and their hours are long. I recommend Roma as a place to socialize. If you wanna study, find a quiet corner in the Knight Library. I LOVE strong coffee. Let's just get that out of the way. The thing is though, there is an art to producing a well-balanced cup of STRONG coffee. Sadly, Roma fails in that regard. Sadly for me anyway. I do have to say though, that if you're going for an all-night study/write/etc session...this is the place to get your cup o' joe. Just be sure that you've got a solid base to pour that coffee onto or you'll find yourself mid-unwanted colon cleanse about 20 minutes after the first few sips. The straight Roma brew is fuel for the Zombie fighters of the future. The rest of their caffeinated selections are what you'd expect. Their pastries are good too. I like the almond scone and the spinach croissant. It's true that a lot of people hang out here too, but I think that's more of a function of not wanting to go to Starbucks than anything else. There is a lot of room in here too, far more than you'd think. Overall, I like this place but it's a utilitarian kind of place rather than a place to hang out at. Very very disappointed, the food not good anymore, the service is terrible, I ordered a sandwich and he made it without gloves, and his hands were too dirty to a point I can see the dirt in his nails!!! I could eat the food even after I told him to remake it with gloves. read more

Okay, so I don't drink coffee. As such, I typically purchase a smoothie at coffee shops such as this, which makes me feel like perhaps I can add something that other reviews have failed to mention. The strawberry smoothie was good. Not uh-MAZE-ing good... but definitely not terrible. I'd get it again. The café itself was nice enough - lots of tables and chairs, which is great for a café. The artwork on the walls was unique, to say the least. As others have commented on, there is no wi-fi. I'm not so sure, though, that this is necessarily a negative. Unless you're one of those types that must constantly be surfing the interwebs, tweeting, yelping, Facebooking, YouTubing, etc.... well it's actually kind of nice to be in a café environment where everybody isn't buried in a laptop. Nostalgic, I guess you could say. Finally, the service was not uncommonly normal. Interesting note, when asked as to what time the café would be closing, an employee responded with that he didn't know, and he'd surprise us. Sure enough, on our way out at 10:20, he mentioned to us (as we passed him), "Surprise, we're closing now," in a friendly manner. read more

I would have appreciated this information BEFORE I purchased coffee. Thanks for making me choke down a cup of coffee. I'm disappointed that you hold your customers accountable for the fact that you're not having a good business day, and to add insult to injury neglect to give them early information. Roma is a great place for studying, hanging out with friends, or grabbing a quick coffee in route to campus. I recently met up with a classmate of mine who I met through Bumble for a quick coffee/study date. It has a super casual and homey feel that makes it one of my favorite places to spend time getting work done. It was the perfect place because it's not too quiet that you can't have conversation, but there's plenty of space to spread out and find a quiet area if that's what you're looking for. We've met up on two study dates since then at Roma and would highly recommend trying it for yourself! Can't beat it! read more

while attending U of O - over the years- i would stop by this place quite often they have amazingly cheap and delicious sandwiches and pastries and i have yet to try one i didn't like. they are GOOD *and* not too pricey. i usually ordered ice tea here so can't vouch for their coffee. lots of people study here and i would say overall it beats starbucks next door read more

There's lots of reasons to love Roma, as evidenced by a usually full cafe of students and professors. The instrumental music is both soothing and inviting, allowing me to either feel at ease if I'm meeting a future roomie or wide-awake and open-minded to study with a classmate. "Comfortable" is definitely the word I would use to describe the restaurant itself: it's run by family, if you're a regular they always remember what you like, the tables and chairs are humble and simple, and the outside eating area is full of wooden benches and picnic tables that make you feel like your grabbing some lunch in a park somewhere. Very peaceful and comfortable. My main reason for loving this place is the good coffee drinks and croissant sandwiches. The croissants are the best home-made croissants I have ever tasted. Turkey cheese croissant, chocolate bread, black and white mocha, or the mexi hot chocolate, I can say are absolutely amazing. But everyone has their own favorite order of pastry and drink from here. If you stop by on your way to work or class, the cashiers are very speedy and you'll get a tasty and energizing start to your day. read more

Their soy chai was delicious, probably by far the best chai I've gotten in Eugene! It's a little pricey, but for the amount you get, I thought it was rather worth it. Went to Espresso Roma for a break during all of the University of Oregon graduating craziness. Perfect little cafe! All of the pastries are handmade daily by the owner and the coffee is delicious. I still think about the apple cinnamon walnut muffin at least once a week! If pastries aren't your thing, they also have a big food item menu as well and fruit for purchase. This place is so much better than Starbucks. The coffee (and all it's flavored coffee drinks and all that, I'm not up on my lingo) is very good--strong, and when it is flavored and sweetened it still has a deep, rich taste that isn't swimming with corn syrup. It's very good quality I think. Admittedly I've never tasted any of the more savory stuff there but the sweet pastries have always been delicious. I like the interior and there is always plenty of room (and it's quiet, I really appreciate that). The spacing of everything is well done. The baked goods and bagel sandwiches were decent enough, but the coffee is mediocre at best. It's true that its proximity to the UO campus and downtown makes for an eclectic atmosphere, but it isn't an atmosphere unique to this particular establishment. If you're just looking for a place to sit and nibble on something as you read a book between classes, then there's no reason Espresso Roma won't satisfy your need. If you're a bit of a coffee snob like me, then you'll be better served walking a few blocks west to Vero. read more

I have been recommended this place by a friend who loves coming in to get a coffee as well as study. I have been here a few times at this point as I am a believer in giving places another try. Based on my most recent visit I would say it is a great place to study because of the free wifi, the prices are reasonable especially in comparison to Starbucks next door. If you are just stopping in purely for coffee I would say there are better places to go if you have the choice of going elsewhere. Average to below average coffee at an average price. read more

They don't wash their glasses properly. I went in for a coffee today and there was lipstick on the rim of the glass which clearly hadn't received a courtesy wipe. The coffee is good, the baked goods are a bit stale. All in all this place would be preferable to a chain, but the lack of cleanliness is disgusting and inexcusable. read more

Coffee shops should be like this place: ample seatings, plenty outlets, affordable and tasty coffee, and a wide selection of fresh sweet treats for added pleasures. I LOVE the outdoor seating area that is covered allowing you to enjoy the great weather and not get burned in the sun for those long stays doing work/study. Plus, there are outlets outside! (Not plenty but few nonetheless). No compromising good seats with charging your devices. The different areas/rooms of seating allows for the right ambience you want. The tables and chairs indoors can look a bit worn and reminds me of old cafeterias but seats nonetheless! read more

They were super fast but not very friendly and my decaf iced caramel latte was disgusting. I didn't even drink it. I tried but couldn't take more than a couple sips. I drink the same drink anywhere I go, so I know there is a variation in how it tastes at different places but this was just bad. The shots were huge and watery, they took up half the 16 oz cup and they came out super fast, probably not even a 15 second pull. The barista poured the shots on top of the ice before the milk which any good barista knows is bad form. I was trying to support local business rather than Starbucks right next store but I was not rewarded. The price was average. $3.95. I will not get coffee here again. read more

Love the atmosphere of this place. There's several rooms to choose from and a great back deck in the spring/summer. There's no wi-fi so I come here when I need to get work done and don't want to be distracted. Solid assortment of bagels, pastries, croissants, etc. Their coffee is decent and better yet - it's decently priced! Great people behind the counter. Great spot for coffee especially if you are on campus frequently. They brew some pretty strong (yet good) coffee and you get more bang for your buck compared to other spots. They also bake some pretty good pastries. I personally recommend any of the muffins. If you are looking for a spot to sit down and chit chat, this is the ideal spot.
