i wanted to go here because the vibes seemed very welcoming, however i ended up with something.... far from my expectations. i understand that my asian hair is pretty dark so it might not have been able to lift very lightly but i wish i wasn't given that much hope to begin with. i was told not to schedule for a test strand but i figured it was okay and decided to trust the stylist. the back was processed for longer than the front resulting in more yellow strands towards the front of my face. the pictures included do not truly show how warm and yellowish my front pieces were when i truly wanted something ashy. the coloring although not the worst in itself was definitely not what i asked for. the cut however was extremely uneven and choppy. i just cannot believe i sat down for a 4 hour service leaving like that... i ended up recoloring myself and going to another salon to fix. i gave it a two because the stylist was kind but i won't be coming back. i included the references i used of what i wanted compared to what i actually left with. read more

I went in not so long ago and had a haircut done that needed some work with the clippers, I'm not sure if the stylist that took care of me knew how to use them, her struggling a bit with them could've been a sign, but they ended up butchering my hair a bit and I had to go to a barber to get it fixed which wasn't so great, I would've preferred them voice that they weren't good with the clippers before going and trying to use them and not do a good job, the owner had helped out with the haircut a bit, they were all polite but i just wish the stylist would've voiced that they weren't handy with the clippers before destroying my hair. read more

I recently got my hair styled with Jess and her skills are amazing!! I got curtain bangs and some light layering and she cut them exactly how I wanted. I am honestly so surprised that I have not written a review! This place is the BOMB! I've been coming here for a few years seeing the same amazing lady named Alex! She is so fun and so talented, she can really make your hair look incredibly perfect! Without getting too ahead of myself, I just want to add that you should call first and book your appointment as most times, they are normally always booked, depending on the stylist and day! The customer service is absolutely amazing, they always ask if you want some water, tea, anything when you first walk in. I've come to a few troubles with being late and they've always been able to work with me! I remember one time that I got the times mixed up and they still ended up seeing me that day, even though Alex was absolutely booked, she still made it work. During that day, one of the girls at the check-in desk (is that what you call it?) checked on our parking meters to make sure that we had plenty of time and didn't get a ticket! So thoughtful!! I honestly cannot say enough about this place and Alex as she was the one who encouraged me to change it up. I used to be so afraid of getting my hair colored, I thought it would ruin my hair and get brittle... She gave me different ideas to what would look good on me and we experimented with a balayage. I left feeling uncertain as I felt like it was too much. I later came in and decided to get an ombre and it went perfectly after that! I got that done over a year ago... I've recently gotten it retouched and brightened and I'm still in love with it! I see her about 3 times a year for a trim and once a year to get my ombre re-touched or get something different! I've had some bad haircuts in my life, but this was one of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten. I went to Eskandalo to cut off my hair to donate. I had asked for a cut with some shape that ended just above my shoulders. I really wanted some long whispy bangs around my face, or some long fringe around my face to shape it. They put my hair in two pony tails to cut, and then they turned the chair away from the mirror so I couldn't see what they were doing. When they turned the chair to see how I liked it, I was shocked. My hair was several inches above my shoulders, much shorter than I had asked for. There were also no bangs, no shape. It wasn't even styled. I ended up with a choppy aline, no bangs, no fringe. I walked out of the salon feeling like I needed to go somewhere else to get my hair fixed. The worst part? The rubber bands they used to put my hair in immediately slipped off the pony tails I was planing on donating. It took my a solid 4 years to grow my hair out to donate. read more

I went here twice and each experience was different. The first time I went, I was getting 9 inches cut off to donate to a program, so that was a huge deal. Prior to that, I had nothing but the very ends trimmed for several years, in order to let it grow out as much as possible. My haircuts before this one had left my hair in a terrible state. My hair is wavy/curly/and thick as anything. I had heard nothing but good things about this salon, so decided to take a chance. I brought in a picture I found online and I think that helped a lot. I got the 9 inches cut and got some layers. They gave me a discount for donating, so that was really nice. After this experience I was excited to go back 2 years later for a trim and some layering. However, the second time my experience was not nearly as positive. I mentioned something about the "curly girl" method, which the hairdresser hadn't heard before--ok not such a big deal, pretty much everyone is completely flummoxed by non-straight hair which I STILL don't understand since how many people have truly straight hair? but that's a rant for another day--and I also made the mistake of mentioning frizz. well, the hairdresser proceeded to do something this razor-comb kind of thing. later I realized that she thinned out my hair, which was a pretty bad idea for my hair type. Guess I learned my lesson...again. Bring a picture, be really specific, and stop them from doing something bizarre that you don't understand. Guess it's back to cutting my own til I find someone who knows how to deal with the beast. If you have thin/straight hair, I bet you'll be overall happy. read more

I sat down with Erin who took the time to really go over what I was looking to get done, and thankfully provided some professional advice on what she thought would work. I'm very happy with what Erin did for me - never before have I had a regular place or stylist, but I think Eskandalo will change that. I finally found a salon that I love and feel comfortable going to. I have had some horrible salon experiences here in the Valley. I had been hearing great things about this place since they opened up last year. This past October I finally decided to go and check it out. I was a bit intimidated when I first went thinking they would have the usual salon attitude plus all the girls that work here have great style and cute hair. Everyone was really friendly and my stylist Erica did an amazing job ( I also went back today for my second visit and my hair looks great.) The prices are extremely reasonable. I get a short cut for $15. My g/f just went yesterday and had her hair colored and styled for $75. When she came home my mouth dropped, it looked really beautiful. Also, their decor is pretty sweet, they have old barber chairs, the walls are painted a nice dark orange with really cool posters and photos hanging all around. If you haven't found a good stylist in the Valley just yet I highly recommend this place. read more

Lindsey and I went this weekend to get our hair colored. I sat for Lianne, and Lindsey sat for Kelly. I LOVE my dark, dark hair. I recently left Celebrations Salon for misunderstandings with my colorist. Lianne wasn't afraid to give me the dark chocolate hair color that I was seeking. I was a bit shocked at the price. Costs of cuts vary with the stylist and her/his expertise. The place is for all ages, men and women, anyone can feel comfortable here. Update 12/1/11: Recieved a tip to try Marybeth at Eskandalo, which I did after bouncing around trying different salons. I have now been going to Marybeth for over a year (gosh maybe two already!) and have had nothing but good experiences with her. My hair gets shampooed, cut and styled all for a great price. Completely happy and satisfied. Glad I went back. Went there on two different occasions. Saw two different people. Went in with a style/cut I loved that had grown out. Asked to keep the same style/shape but needed it trimmed. The first person cut my hair super short and was nothing like the original style. Hated it. I let that grow out. Went back to see someone different. Showed her pics of the original style I had/wanted. She literally cut around the shape. Trimmed it by snipping the ends only, but did not go any further. Additionally, you will not get your hair shampooed. 1st stylist sprayed my hair with water. 2nd did the whole cut dry. I have lots of friends who go there and have had good experiences, but I personally will not go back. read more

Eskandalo is exactly the business model needed to keep Bethlehem on the up and up. I feel cool when I go in and call my stylist by her "tag" or sometimes her real name. Great music too, you know I heard "joy division" isolation in there the other day, I haven't heard that since Jose Canseco played for the A's and was a member of the 50/50 club...anyway back to my review. It is a little pricey but its worth it. I actually had to go once to get a bad haircut repaired after "cheating" on Eskandalo to avoid their prices, I learned my lessons. A haircut that makes you have perma-bedhead is not worth saving $5. The only thing South Bethlehem needs is a cool comic store that isn't too pretentious and then maybe we can call ourselves the New Old Williamsburg Brooklyn before it got expensive, mainstreamed, featured on the unwatchable HBO's Girls read more

Really not that great, here's why (based on my experience): - My barber, she was a little weird and discomforting - "Dude" at the cash register who was working with her that night was weird too... - I explained it in detail how I wanted my cut, it ended up just being some few trims I could have done myself and saved the money. The only positive thing I can think of is that the place looked phenomenal including the only 2 staff members there at the time of the shift and the greeting was friendly. It was on a Sunday night. All in all...not worth the money or time. Based on my experience and from what I understand, the more experienced barbers train the newer ones, but apparently they don't know how to cut my straight hair. I would go as far as saying that this place isn't for men at all. I'd rather pay more money for a better experience than feel uncomfortable with people and get the wrong hair cut. read more

I had come to this salon after parting ways with my hairdresser of 9 years and I love it. Kelly has been doing doing my hair for about 2 years now and she is the absolute best. I have naturally dark brown hair which I insist on bleaching blonde and she does a fantastic job every time. She even helped me repair my damaged hair. Furthermore, everyone here is super nice and friendly. They all seem very accommodating as well. Whatever you want, they will make it happen. As for the prices, they are pretty standard for an independently owned salon and the stylists are experienced so you are getting what you pay for. I recommend this place to everyone I know. My previous hair stylist moved to Chicago, so I asked around and got several recommendations for this salon. Never have I hated a haircut so much in my entire life. I called ahead and asked who would be best for doing simple cleanup on my long layers, since their website discusses more alternative, avant-garde styling, and wanted to make sure I wasn't too 'normal' for their aesthetic. The receptionist said "anyone could do it" but clearly, the stylist I had (Ashley) was completely incapable. I should have known better when she asked me if I wanted a wash before she cut my hair, or if just misting it was fine; I was an idiot to miss such a blatant red flag. Ashlry razored my hair from above my ears (which never looks flattering on fine, thin hair, so now I have a lovely halo of frizz every day, thanks so much!) and thinned my hair beyond comprehension. She cut off 4-5 inches when I said I "just wanted a trim and mainly came in because my bangs were getting too long." She didn't even touch my bangs until I asked her a 3rd (yes, 3rd) time, and when she finally did, she added more by pulling hair in from the middle of my scalp! She took away all the volume from my hair (which, as my fellow pin-straight fine-haired folk know, is the most important aspect to maintain), and completely ignored my very simple request and quite honestly did what she wanted without any regard to my style. Never mind the fact that the next day I discovered the cut was not even in length on both sides. The worst part is, her botch job has ruined all the ways I used to style my hair. It's too thin now to stay in a braid or bun (my ponytail holder literally falls off within 5 minutes- that's how much she thinned out my hair), and in a ponytail it looks like it was hacked to death by a 6 year old. I literally cannot style my hair in any flattering way, and I'm stuck with it for who knows how long. Basically, she gave me a haircut that I would have gotten in an emo phase in high school, before I knew what a nice haircut was. And when I called to complain in tears after I realized that she had taken away more than half of my ponytail, they had the audacity to put her on the phone with me. The receptionist the next day was very sympathetic and gave me a refund and complimentary product, but it doesn't even come close to repairing the damage the stylist caused. If you want something asymmetrical, or alternative, maybe this is the place for you, but if you want simple and traditional, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone after the complete disregard the stylist had for what I asked. If you can't honor what the customer wants, you shouldn't be styling hair. I don't understand what part of "I just need a trim" means "do whatever the hell you want" but that's clearly how Ashley interprets it. read more

I want to like this place. I really do. I kept going back even after a few bad experiences because it's relatively inexpensive, conveniently located close to Lehigh, and a lot of people seem to like it. But at this point, I've just had too many bad experiences to want to go back. Never get your hair colored here. They can never seem to get my hair color right. One time I even brought in a picture of the color I wanted, and it still came out way too light. Last time I went was the worst, though. I explained that my natural hair color is a light golden blonde, and I wanted my hair to be as close to my natural color as possible. The color I ended up with was a really gross-looking mousy brown, almost grey-looking, that no one would ever describe as "blonde". The stylist assured me that it would "fade to blonde over time". Er, that's nice, but I didn't come because I wanted blonde hair in 2 months, I wanted it now! Also, shouldn't permanent dyes... not fade that much? In any case, I asked my friend her honest opinion of the color and she said that she thought it aged me by about 10 years. Personally, I thought it looked so awful that I went home and redyed it myself that same day. Complete waste of $40. In terms of haircuts, I've gotten some decent ones and some bad ones. I really think it depends on the stylist you get. I've had Erika twice and she does a decent haircut but she always seems a bit unfriendly. I had one really, really terrible haircut here, although I forget the name of the woman who did it. Sometimes they ask you if you want a shampoo or not. I was a little taken aback because I'd never been asked that in a salon before so I answered no the one time, and the haircut came out really choppy. Like another reviewer, I kind of thought that being shampooed first was a given when you get your hair done. Overall, if you're just looking for a really simple haircut that won't break the bank, you might be okay here. Otherwise, don't take your chances. read more

After intentionally NOT cutting my hair for almost a year, (after the last too short, too chopped mess-- not from them, though ) I decided my hair needed a style and to be shaped up. I was trying to get some length and volume, eventually grow into a short-reverse bob. After reading all the great reviews on Eskandalo, I decided to give it a try. Well, I left myself at the mercy of the stylist and and lost all the hair I I had grown back. It's cute, but not me, and waaay too short. (ugh think Posh T short) Looks great from the side, but not from the front. I should have been watching and more verbal about keeping some of my hair. Now my ears are cold and it's Winter!!! Prices are great, they are very talented -- being too short is probably more my fault, but be sure to be ADAMANT about what you what, especially if you're trying to grow your hair!!!! Terrible haircut. Charges the same price as any other barbershop but is generally not up to par. Maybe they are better with styles for the younger set. I just wanted a good haircut for a business professional and I had to go get everything redone somewhere else. Also they have been known to charge more for people who are older. I went in and got a haircut for one price and my co-worker went in and got charged $5 more. Inquiries on price difference was met with indifference. Stay away! They do offer water or tea as you wait. They know their way around funky cuts and colors, and the website was extremely informative as to what I was getting myself into, and what the different stylists were best at. This place rocks my socks! Was told to go here by a friend since the girl who had cut my hair before moved out west. So I figured why not give it a shot. Had a girl (Erin) ask me how I wanted my hair done. Well, being the guy that I am I replied,"I really don't know, she just kinda does this and that and..." SO with very little information she was able to do a fantastic job. Also they offer you a beverage while you wait if someone is finishing an appointment or even if you are a walk in!
