This was my first escape room experience and it will not be my last! Power Surge at Escape Garden State left me wanting more and I can't wait to return!! We felt welcomed as soon as we walked in! The guy at the desk was very friendly and explained the entire process to us. After watching a dos and don't video, we were off! We hit lots of roadblocks while trying to escape but the little hints provided on the monitor helped us out alot! I spent a little bit more than I anticpiated but it was worth it in the end. It had been a while since I have done an Escape Room, so i invited a few friends to do the Jersey Devil-inspired "Devil's Den" room. This was a toughie. Advertised as moderately difficult, they are not lying. My friends and I needed a lot of hints, BUT we were able to complete the puzzle in the allotted hour! It was really cool to see a room inspired by local lore as well as ancient mythology. The staff at Escape Garden State were very nice (and very helpful during the Escape part). I would love to try another one of the rooms and definitely recommend doing the "Devil's Den" room to anyone who enjoys Escape Rooms! read more

This was our 2nd time at Escape Garden State, but this time with our two younger ones. We did Boardwalk which had lots of arcade game-focused puzzles which were challenging, but yet not too hard. The staff was great and timely with the hints. It looks like they expanded their physical space since the pandemic as well. Definitely check them out! read more

My bf and I went to do the mafia blackout room the other day (during covid). I called to inquired and they highly suggested at least a minimum group of 4 for this room since it's highest on the difficulty ranking. We both did a fair share of escape rooms before and went ahead and booked it anyway. But with covid, there's a minimum cost of 4 people in order to book the room (which is fair). The location and workers there had implemented several safe measures to protect from covid, I really appreciated it! About the room, the environment and decoration were on theme! Everything was decorated nicely and very immersive. I had a great time with the puzzles and they were multi-layered. None of them were super straightforward and they were definitely creative and difficult. Without giving any spoilers, I wanted to say the puzzles were well incorporated into the story and theme. We had to use a lot of hints/tips the game masters gave us to get out merely 3 seconds ahead. Highly recommend this place. Came here for a team building work thing. It was just as good, if not better than an Escape Room in NYC. The rooms here are themed after NJ, and we ended up doing a room themed after Thomas Edison. It was challenging, as well as interesting. The puzzles are well thought out and the hints given are well timed. We got a Groupon, so it was pretty cheap too. They could use signs to better guide to their location though, I spent about 20 minutes driving circles around the parking lot after my GPS got me there. Quick tip: The building is all the way in the back of the shopping center! I've done a few escape rooms in the city, and wanted to try out another one. I went on Groupon and found this place. It had great reviews so decided to come give it a try. The 3 of us tried the Surge room (we were the only ones playing) and absolutely loved it! The puzzles were entertaining, challenging, and really made us think outside of the box. Matt was also an awesome host, he gave us a few clues when we were stuck. Somehow, we were able to escape with 2 minutes to spare. This was definitely one of my favorite escape rooms I've tried. Matt said there will be a few new rooms added, and I honestly can't wait to come back and try those too! read more

Great experience at Escape Garden State! It's hard to find escape rooms in the area anymore as it seems like this fad has almost fizzled out. This location has a lot of options in terms of rooms and the difficulty ranges from easy to hard. Oh man we were horrible at this. Just the worst. There was a group of us and we started off in two separate rooms. That alone was a mistake lol Some of us REALLY tried, the rest of us shut down once the attitude started. A group of competitive friends that just did not work well together. As for the escape room itself, it was incredibly detailed and thought out. It definitely was on the hard side for us. We finished it about a minute after the thing went off, and she still gave us the win. Maybe drinking before hand was not the best idea. It was a great time though. I was really impressed with the detail they put into their rooms. Next time, we'll try an easier one. read more

I'd never been to an escape room before, but my friend suggested this place as a spot for a double date with our partners. We honestly had such a great time and were all a little bit surprised by that since I think we went into it thinking it may be lame. I didn't really know what to expect considering I'd never been to an escape room before but our "Game Master" was really helpful in explaining the rules and giving us hints. We unfortunately failed our "mission" and didn't manage to escape but we'll definitely be back to try out a different room. I will say, though, that the only downside of this place is how hard it is to find. We must've circled the parking lot 5 times trying to find it but that would honestly be my only "complaint." read more

This was an impromptu trip that ended up being a lot of fun. We gave them a call to see if they'd have availability in 30 minutes and they did. We did the Mafia room which was their hardest but still a lot of fun. There were 4 of us and we only had a a few steps left when the time ran out. It was very well thought out and creative with a lot of satisfying twists. The boardwalk room, we were told, is more physical with games etc. They said they plan to open up a new room this upcoming summer. Definitely recommend trying this out for an hour of puzzles and fun. read more

The Mafia Blackout escape room was super challenging. We had a great family day together and enjoyed trying to solve the puzzles. We laughed so hard while playing. Unfortunately, we did not make it out in time. We were totally stumped on the last clue. Overall, we had a great time. This was an event we had scheduled during CoVid and finally were able to go. This was my first escape room experience! I had never done one before and had no idea what to expect. It was a friend's birthday and he wanted to do this - we ended up at Escape Garden State because it was one of the few places that could accommodate a private room for a team our size (there were 10 of us). We had an 8:30pm reservation and Power surge was our room. Of course, my friends (love them) are always LATE and we didn't all get there until 8:45ish. Not a problem at all, we were accommodated for the late start. A few rules to follow and then we were off in our room for the next hour. As soon as we walked in, I literally stood there for 30 seconds because I have no idea how this works! But luckily for me everyone just starts to get to work and I learned how it works. Wow, what an experience solving all the puzzles and riddles! Definitely puts your brain to work and I think having a team like mine we all worked well together. Happy to say we solved it with time to spare. Great experience here you won't go wrong! read more

We recently went to Escape Garden State and had a blast. I've done a few rooms and like many, is in a warehouse area. But, unlike many, the space seemed newly opened. The room itself was quite large. The staff was accommodating. The puzzles/clues were CHALLENGING. We all had a blast. There were 8 of us and I really think that we needed all 8 of us to get out of this room. The staff are great, the game masters actually pay attention to your game and help you at the right time when you really need it. I just did the Devils Den, and to be honest, the room wasn't as fun as all the others I've have tried in my experiences of escape rooms. No jump scares, no thrill. Just boring. When asking for hints we were left stranded and only got an answer 5 minutes after asking. Definitely a place for a money grab. Wont be coming back here again. read more

Five of us did the Mafia-themed escape room and had an absolute blast! We had never done an escape room before and were pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was. We really had to work together to solve some of the puzzles. There were a lot of puzzles and contraptions, and they supported the theme well. Our Game Master, Matt, gave us some hints when we got stuck and we escaped with just 9 seconds to spare! The Mafia theme was fun and even if we hadn't escaped, we would have enjoyed the experience. Me: Enthusiast. Over 40 escape rooms completed, and over 20 in the last 6 months. Not really into horror escapes. Puzzle hunt player, the logical / mathematical one. Hunter / Gatherer. My partner: Had done 1 escape room before, but is an avid puzzle player and an above average logician. Narrow scope player. Liked to be given things to solve. Room 1: Power Surge (Finished with 18 minutes left, Stated Difficulty, 4/5) The good: The room was HUGE. It was pretty amazing how large the room was, and that allowed for really cool things. There were one or two puzzles I've never seen before. Ever. That's neat and a great feeling as well. The mediocre: There seemed to be an over reliance to a specific type of visual trick. The second you unlock the necessary flashlight, it feels like the game is completely reliant on it. The not so good: This game suffered from a major design flaw... I had solved the final puzzle before the "instructions" were given to us to do so. Because all necessary pieces were given in advance, the final puzzle can be brute forced. Although we solved the other puzzle (having not needed to, for a sense of completion), it was a bit of a letdown. Even with that, we were there and wanted another room. It took nearly a half hour to get the go ahead to rebook (some rule about the owner being the only one allowed to be a booking), we went into room 2. Room 2: Mafia Blackout (Finished with 8 minutes left, see review, Stated difficulty, 5/5) The Good: Again, the room was plenty big with a ton of places to go and things to do. Again, some really awesome puzzles that I haven't seen before. Very cool stuff. The mediocre: The Gamemaster was amped up and excited to watch us play. She was so sweet and awesome... and she wanted to help. So whenever we began struggling, she chimed in with a clue. Even at times we didn't want one. Struggling is a necessary and fun portion of the game. The bad: Tech failed. Not once, but TWICE. Once on the final puzzle. It was a heartbreaking thing. The QM had to come in two different occasions to help us with the technology. Once required extensive fiddling. The other involved the QM giving us 4 digits scrambled and told us to brute force the last lock. We had it already solved but since the tech failed, we had gotten another "puzzle" that was largely unsolvable with 4! Different permutations. Ultimately, I can still recommend this location. As they grow, they're going to get better and better. Check them out! I look forward to seeing what happens next with them. read more

This place is awesome sauceome! We did Powaaa Surge with a newblet, 2 clutch kiddos and my craziness so it was a perfect blend of whaaa....whaa..OMAGur...what rrrrr ya doing?!?!?! Needless to say we solved it with a few minutes to spare and just a perfect amount of guidance from the rockstar ladies running the show. Party of 2 did the Boardwalk room and it was a ton of fun! After a slow start, we managed to escape with just enough help from our game master who gently kept us on track. Very clean facility and professional, courteous staff. Really only complaint here was that we were not given a whiteboard to use while collecting data or solving the puzzles. My friends and I were here this past weekend. This was our 14th Escape Room together. Escape Rooms are something we love to do together on the weekends and we were very happy with Escape Garden State! The staff was super friendly and our game master was the owner. He gave us helpful hints when we struggled, but also didn't give us too many hints. Now to review the room... This is definitely worth going too if you're an Escape Room lover like we are! My friends and I enjoy Escape Rooms with more than 1 room per mission. We did the Boardwalk mission and we really enjoyed the different rooms it had to offer. We also really liked the design and atmosphere of the rooms. It helped really get us into the game! What we really liked about this room was that it was an arcade theme. And without saying too much, they incorporated some of the games into the escape which was really cool! The Boardwalk is the easiest out of the 3 rooms they have and we got out in 54:32 (only because 1 specific task took us quite a bit lol). This room was challenging, but fun! It wasn't too easy, but also not crazy difficult. We will definitely be back to do their 2 harder rooms! read more

Participated in 2 escape rooms June 30, 2018: Boardwalk Blast & Power Surge. Both rooms were nicely decorated, had interesting themes, & well-thought-out puzzles. The places with multiple rooms are always appreciated. Some folks felt the puzzles could have been harder. What is great about this place is that you can book the whole room with about 4-5 people and prices are reasonable. Matt delivers fantastic customer service. The parking lot is huge so parking is super easy. At the time, they were working on another room. Although they are on Groupon, the person booking the reservation seems to match Groupon rates & 20% off for returning customers. read more

We did the Devil's Den room. The puzzles were fun--really creative and varied and a good level of challenge--but they were all dependent on electronics to function were really glitchy. There were three that ate up a ton of our time because we had the right answer but either weren't doing it fast enough for the electronic component to register it or the prop was misaligned with its electronic components. Also, all the escape rooms I've been to before allow you to ask the game master a set number of questions. Here they just fed us clues whenever we were struggling, without us asking for them, so it felt like we were just being walked through it. Plus, the game master's advice confused us, because it referenced things we had already done or tried (again, the glitches), so I wonder if she wasn't paying really close attention. read more
