My husband and I and another couple we are friends and have done escape rooms in the past with booked the witches room. As we had previously done two rooms at another location, I was excited to try a new one.
We showed up and just as we were about to check in, the guy at the other desk just walked away. No, "give me a minute," just walked away. I understand he was checking on a room for another group, but all he had to say was "give me a minute."
As we were only four people, and it's an eight person room, another group of four friends were able to also book our room.
When the front desk guy came back, he said our room would be ready in ten minutes. When our guide came in a minute later, she said our room was actually ready now. Great! Only, it actually wasn't ready (more on that later).
We were led into our room and our guide explained a few things to us, and one of the girls (the bossy one) in the other group (2 couples) asked about the levels. Apparently there is a competitive level or a "just for fun." As a group, we chose the just for fun. Bossy pants wanted the competitive level, and I should have realized then she was going to be the worst one.
We entered the room and watched the video. This is something I don't understand about escape rooms who do the story on the screen - if you are going to do the story on the screen, also give us clues on the screen instead of all muffled through a loud speaker. After, we went about searching for our clues... well apparently one of the doors in the room was supposed to have been shut and we were supposed to figure out how to unlock it, but the door had been left wide open. I guess more time had been needed to set up. So, we had to leave the room and figure out how to get back in.
Another issue was, we asked for a clue like 5 times before actually getting it... and then it was for something we had already opened/figured out. We managed to figure out the step we were trying to do without a clue. Also, we were allowed to use our phone flashlights. I had a love/hate feeling towards that. In past rooms I've been in, they have provided flashlights, and while they kind of suck, the phone thing sort of ruined the ambience for me. Maybe give us four lanterns instead of one.
Normally, I wouldn't say this but, our group of friends figured out most of the clues and did most of the leg work. The pregnant girl in the other group was actually nice and stuck around trying to help me. Her bossy friend clearly never graduated past kindergarten. She actually grabbed clues and things out of my friends hand. More than once. Then she would get bored and move to another room. I honestly wish you could score your teammates if they are strangers, because she should have been labeled "doesn't play well with others." Clearly she spells "teamwork" with an "I," and she didn't even figure out anything!
We did get out of the room in record time, despite bossy mcbosserson, who actually kept insisting we do the last clue her way (her way was very wrong), and had issues listening to others ideas, including her own friends.
Just want to add - the other players did not impact this review. read more
