Our family has been going to Carpinteria for 30 years. Early on when the kids were very small, we stayed on Sandyland and didn't venture far from the beach. But eventually we crossed the tracks on Linden and found Esau's Cafe. It seems to be always busy, even in the off season, and for many good reasons. Arti and Scott our hosts, are most important, but their kids are great and they and the other employees are fast on their feet bringing the best food in "Carp". We have cancelled reservations at "gourmet" eateries to enjoy Arti and Scott's comfort food, and just did that yesterday. We're hooked and plan to stay that way. Awful, my boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch and to start off we asked for water and the glasses were dirty and there was stuff floating in it. We then got our food and found 2 hairs in the onion rings. The meat tasted old and and tasteless . The bus boy looked like he rolled out of bed and went to work. The menus were dirty, and had HAIR on them too! I would not recommend coming here. The place looks really run down. If I could give it zero stars I would. You'd have more luck going to the burger joint up the street. Thinking about it makes my stomach turn. The owner really needs to revamp the whole place and start showing he cares. I came to Esau's after LEAVING "The Worker Bee" restaurant because of RUDE SERVICE. Esau's was great!!! Several servers come and check on your table. Tri-tip and Eggs were great, so were my families meals. They were just as busy as "the worker bee restaurant " but know how to provide great service even when busy. Had breakfast at this charming little local Carpinteria eatery with my wife and daughter on Sunday. I had a Lox & Creamcheese omelet that was delicious. The "sourdough" bread was some botique white bread, but was still flavorful. We ate outside at the sidewalk and never lacked for attentiveness from the staff. Our servers were pleasant as were most of the diners around us. There is a single restroom for the customers that was in heavy use by the time I needed it...another room would be helpful. I will be spending several weekends here in Carp for the next few months, so I wanted to dive right in to the local food scene. Boyfriend and I walked up from the beach and similar to other reviews, passed several other packed restaurants along the way. For whatever reason this one caught our eye. You can seat yourself anywhere you want and at 1:30pm on 4th of July, you'd think they'd be packed with tourists. They weren't. They're only open until 2pm during the week. The service was attentive but extremely slow. It seems like they have the bussers take your drink order then the server passes you over ten times before she comes back to take your order. Fish and chips were overpriced and overly greasy hunks of batter. Boyfriend got a breakfast scramble that was decent sized. I used to visit Esau's back at the original location. Not very often, but anytime I was in the area during the morning, warranted a visit. Even when it was lunchtime, I'd always go for their breakfast. Now that there's an Easu's in Carpenteria, it's closer and much easier to visit, although I'm sad because I'm still unable to visit very often. Took my fiancee here a few weeks back for lunch, and we split the Gnarly Burrito and a full stack of blueberry pancakes. The burrito was full of eggs, cheese, ham, sausage, and chorizo, and the pancakes were loaded with blueberries and nice, light, and fluffy. The whole meal wasn't hard on the wallet and we were both so stuffed that we didn't even end up eating dinner that night. The kid waiting our table was a bit slow in getting our order, but the food was quick to our table soon afterward. Visited this place while on a road trip. Definitely one of the best breakfast I've EVER had. Big servings and the food was full of flavor. I also loved their Micheladas. I'd give the food a perfect 5 stars. But the service could be a better. I actually has to get up and look for our waitress to have her refill our coffees / waters. Esau's double billed my credit card. I had to go to the bank to order a change. They told me to contact Esaus....Which I did. The owner returned my call--told me it would be 3-5 business days....That never happened. I had to call back Scott Stanley....the owner said the bookkeeper had dropped the ball. FINALLY got a check for the full amount of the breakfast $30 which was over priced as well. If the place had ANY class they would have given a gift certificate for a breakfast on them....But they don't More aggravation than it was worth for a $30 over/double charged meal for myself and daughter. And truly thoughtless and graceless. Skip it. I used to enjoy the "greasy spoon" aspect when I first came to SB 40 years back and it was on lower State. It has nothing to offer at this point. Glasses were dirty and had things floating in them. Food was decent but one order was wrong and it took so long to even order and get the food that we just gave up. A 20% gratuity was added on to our bill as a party of five. They didn't deserve the tip of 20% and if I had cash I would have not payed it. The owners should pay the workers accordingly so they don't feel the need to put a 20% tip to unsuspecting customers at there leisure. They had a server come as ask for drinks in the beginning and when I asked if they had caffeine free tea she said "I'm not sure, I don't think so." Like go check!! If you don't know what the drinks are, you shouldn't ask what we want. And then we had someone deliver our food who didn't even know what the name of or food was, and then we saw another server just to take our order and drop off the check. Oh Esau's...I cant pinpoint why I always come back. Is it the in house flair they kick up traditional breakfast favorites? Is it the best freaking house coffee ever? Is it the cute waitresses? Its a three way tie for me. ;) Ive had varying experiences in the many times that I stop in for breakfast. The only bad meal I had was the Monte Cristo which was over-fried and pretty unsatisfying. Most other times the food is really good and well made. Since this place gets a lot of business, food waiting time can vary from average to way too long and you'll have to go out of your way to flag down service. I really don't mind though...the coffee and atmosphere always compensate. I like this place but expect to pay 10-15% more than most other breakfast places in Carp. Enjoy! read more
