It was a sunny day when I met Teddy. Teddy surprised me at first. Standing nearly 7 feet at the shoulder, he was quite intimidating. I brought a carrot with me and this giant softly took the carrot from my hands. See, Teddy is a Belgian Draft Thoroughbred horse. He is incredibly strong and weighs in at about 1900 lbs. To mount teddy I had to use a platform. Once aboard, I noticed teddy had some opinions. Mostly he was hungry and wanted to graze on the green foliage around us. Secondly, teddy doesn't like waiting. He would regularly take a big breath and then sigh if the other horses around him stopped walking for too long. He would also pause before going downhill, wait for the horses ahead of him to move out of the way, and then quickly catch up to them... all so he wouldn't have to pause on the hill. I scheduled a 2 hour ride and this was my first time horseback riding. The trip was really calm and maybe to some people boring. We traveled about 5 miles per hour along the trails, only stopping a few times. I would do this again, but would probably look for a little more speed on my second ride. read more

Kelli was a wonderful guide!  She introduced each horse and told their riders a little information about them. This was one of the many courtesies for the safety and comfort of her horses. It can be difficult to find places that care more about the horses than the money they make but Equine Escapes is that place! The horses are healthy and happy and some are rescues. I haven't even begun to describe the breathtaking ride. My fiance and I had a two hour trail ride this weekend with Equine Escapes and we had a fantastic time! Kelly was warm and professional and did a great job figuring out my groups' various experience levels and matching us with her horses. All of the horses were healthy and happy and clearly were enjoying themselves on the trail. I had Kid, a perky blonde boy who was sweet and snuggly. Fiance had Teddy, a giant majestic beast who had a gait like butter. Kelly was great at warning me to keep Kid from munching on all greenery during the ride and showing me how to keep him in check. The trail was beautiful and relaxing, with enough turns and up and downs to keep it interesting. My 8 year old daughter and I redeemed a Groupon offer I had purchased back in October (2+ months ago) for a 1 hour trail ride for the both of us. We were sent emails with all the information we needed immediately after purchasing the Groupon. I picked a date and went to Equine Escape's website and made a reservation for today. I was a little concerned about the weather being in the mid to high 30's and rainy if the ride would even take place. Kelly sent out a confirmation email that contained the address of the Trailhead (where we met) and a copy of the release form so that it maybe printed out and signed by each rider ahead of time in order to save time for everyone. My daughter and I were the first riders to show up and we were about 20 minutes or so early. Kelly was already there working on preparing everything we needed for today. There was plenty of parking and using my GPS with the address she provided made it easy to find. When she saw us walking toward the trailer she immediately came over to introduce herself and welcomed us to get to know the horses and the play with the small dog that accompanied us on our ride. By the time the other two people who joined us showed it was time to go over instructions for the ride. Kelly was amazing with my young daughter. My daughter's safety was her top priority. She made sure throughout the ride that my daughter was properly sitting on the horse and that she followed the directions given beforehand. Kelly had my daughter right beside her and held onto a rope that was attached to "Buck" the gentle sweetheart of a horse Kelly picked out specifically for her the entire time. Kelly also provided an awesome pink helmet for my daughter to wear through the ride. Kelly spoke with my daughter throughout the ride and made sure every question my daughter asked about horses and there were a lot were answered. Kelly made sure everyone was safe and comfortable many throughout the entire ride. (I admit toward the end I was getting tired and riding sloppy leaning a bit and she made sure I corrected my posture while in the saddle). As long as everything remained safe everyone was able to spend the rest of the ride enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the trail the rest of the time. When we returned to the Trailhead Kelly dismounted and came over to help each and every person get down safely. Kelly made sure we had time to take pictures to mark this awesome adventure before getting off the horse and going home. Kelly has several "good reviews" that yelp has "Filtered" at the end of the reviews that are seen up front. It wouldn't surprise me if almost all of the reviews were a consequence Kelly paid simply for having a sudden family emergency on one morning a ride was scheduled. It's easy to understand why folks would be frustrated from waiting around and being excited to go horseback riding but emergencies happen even to the most prepared and being self employed shouldn't mean that Kelly should have been forced to choose between being with her family during a time of need or her business. Based on what I experienced today with my daughter I would have no problem recommending Kelly and her beautiful horses to any of my friends and family. My daughter and I are both looking forward to our next ride with Kelly. read more

Despite the rainy weather, we had so much fun today. I was with a group of four. The other three riders were pretty inexperienced (one had some lessons as a kid and for the other two, this was their second ride ever). I have been riding all my life but since I don't own horses, I'm always searching out trail rides. I've probably been on 50+ rides with various companies and this one is in my top 3 (behind Hawaii and Victoria, BC). We met up at a trailhead not far from the Hobart/Issaquah exit on highway 18. Kelly's horses were all very well behaved and she spent ample time making sure that we were all on the same page, got to know a little bit about our horses and the best ways to treat her horses with respect. We were offered helmets and one of our riders accepted. We had a relaxing and fun ride. I rode Teddy, a 17 hand Thoroughbred/Belgian. I loved him. He was a big horse with such an enjoyable rocking gate. My friends road Tinker, Trinity, and Dakota. They all really liked their horses too. We tipped Kelly $30 for showing us a great time. I would definitely recommend Equine Escapes for a fun trail ride. For those who had bad experiences, if you are feeling uncomfortable or would like a helmet, please speak up. Make sure you ask questions and understand the basics before you start out. I can only imagine how hard Kelly's job is while trying to keep both the riders and horses safe. She checked in with us often to see how we were feeling. My horse tripped once and she asked to make sure I was ok. Horses are animals and no amount of training can make riding a horse 100% predictable. I would hate for a friend to be scared of riding after falling off or to get hurt but I also know that is what I have signed up for. read more

Just went on my 2nd ride with Kelly from Equine Escapes last month, and I am already planning my next visit. Both times have done the 2-hour trail ride; each was at a different trailhead, which made it even more exciting. Kelly does a great job of making sure all on the ride are comfortable and confident, and makes sure that the ride is a good mix of simple for beginner riders, but not too boring for advanced riders. As a more experienced rider, she gave me the option of riding near the back of the group, so I could set a pace for myself, stopping my horse on the trail then trotting or cantering to catch back up to the group. The horses are sweet and clearly loved and well-cared for. They're a great mix of spunky and easy-to-handle. For my most recent ride, I requested the horse I rode the first time (Jack, a little Appaloosa), and she made sure to bring him out specifically for my request; she told me they were planning on leaving him at the ranch that day. I would absolutely recommend Equine Escapes, whether you're a beginner or experienced rider (she even offers an Advanced Ride, which involves more trotting and cantering, which I have yet to try). I was really pleased with my trail ride and the way that Kelly runs her business. These horses are really well taken care of! It was my first time horseback riding and about a third of the way into the ride, my horse Nemo starts getting a bit flustered and it is making me a bit apprehensive. Kelly was kind enough to switch with me - this was so appreciated. It took much longer than expected in terms of prep time, which didn't bother me. I purchased a Groupon for a one hour trail ride which was completed back in July. Here is a copy of the complaint I sent to Groupon about our experience (I was partially refunded). I was surprised after seeing other low ratings here on Yelp that Groupon is AGAIN partnering with EE. Buyer beware - the experience was nothing as described on the EE website. Quite a letdown. July 2012: I just returned from my trail ride with Equine Escapes and it was not at all what I was expecting. Right from the beginning nothing seemed right. We were told to "arrive early so you can meet the horses that we've chosen for the day and get to know them. You'll have the opportunity to connect with your horse and they may even chose you!" but when we arrived 30 minutes early, no one greeted us, the horses were already tacked up and we were left wondering if anyone who worked there was even around. My riding partner and I stood around, alone for over 30 minutes waiting and doing nothing. The other people in our group arrived at 9:30am (the ride start time listed) and finally someone came out to "greet" us. About 15 minutes after that, the tacked horses were loaded into a trailer and we were told we then had to get in our own vehicles and follow them to the trail head. We were not told where we were going or how to get there on our own in case we got separated. Only one staff member (not even one of the guides listed on their website) went with our full party of 7 and I was the only one with any riding experience. Following him on the drive to the trail head was ridiculous as he was speeding with a huge horse trailer down a 2-lane road. When we arrived the standing around and waiting continued as the horses were unloaded. He finally asked if anyone wanted a helmet (everyone did, of course), but there were no available helmets small enough for the child that was with the other group, so she wore an improperly fitted, way too big helmet. After everyone was on their horse, we got a briefing of safety issues. Rule #1 was stay in a single file line on the trail. Rule #2 was keep your horses far enough apart so that no one can be kicked. Rule #3 was hook your reins over your saddle horn so the horses can't accidentally pull them out of your hands. (sorry, what?) Once on the trail (it was well after 10:00 by this time, more like 10:30 and we were led to believe the ride started at 9:30) the safety issues we were briefed on beforehand, were completely out the window. He encouraged those at the front of the group to come up next to each other so they could talk. My friend and I were in the back of the group and didn't receive even a single word. Because all of the horses began to cluster, I was constantly fighting with my horse to stay in a single-file line. Annoying. And not enjoyable. The trail ride itself was a simple, flat trail (shared by lots of bicycles, btw) and not even an enjoyable short loop - just down a ways, turn around, and straight back out the way you already came. Moderately pretty because there were at least some trees, but nothing like the photos on their website. All in all, when we got back in our car my friend and I turned to each other and all we could say was, "well, I wouldn't recommend THAT to anyone!" Very, very disappointing. read more

I had a ride from Equine Escapes in October of 2010. Did not write until now, because the experience was so traumatizing that I have not got back on a horseback till 2 days ago. We came in a party of four, signed up for 2 hour trail rides. I was put on a horse named Samson. I had a bad feeling to begin with since there were no education or basic training whatsoever. We were not offered a helmet at all. I was very uncomfortable and insecure on the horse. We gathered around before going on the trail ride. Only 1 guide on a horse. The guide got off the horse to fix our friend's saddle. YOU SHOULD HAVE FIXED THIS EVEN BEFORE LETTING ANYONE MOVE ON THEIR OWN. We had ZERO riding experience. Platypus, the guide's horse, suddenly started running back to the barn, with unknown reason. All the horses started wanting to run. My horse, which was behind, went on a full gallop with me on it. After about 5 terrifying seconds, I decided to jump off a 14-hand horse, with no helmet or protective gear. I landed on gravel road. HURTS. After the fall, we walked back to the farm and they HAD NO FIRST AID KIT. Did I mention it was my birthday? They even made comments like : "you should have stopped the horse!" I did not even know how to make the horse turn and whatnot. They were so unorganized, Thankfuly nothing was broken. I attached a photo of my scarred face. read more

We had a LivingSocial deal for a 2 hour escape which we had scheduled for a Sunday morning. We got up early and printed directions off from their website to 2 of the possible places to meet out in Hobart/Maple Valley area. (We tried to call to confirm whether we should meet at the ranch or the trailhead since it was unclear, but the 3 phone numbers listed on their site either rang unanswered or the voicemail box was full). We waited at the trailhead, then when no one came, we tried to head to the ranch, only to discover via a neighbor that they hadn't lived there since September 2010. We called multiple times, then finally headed back after driving around for the better part of an hour. We left a voicemail asking them to call us back. So far we have heard nothing. This all from the mouth of a random teenage girl who lived in the house next door. Did I mention we waited? YES!!!! Almost an hour! My kids and I had such a good time riding with Kelly at Equine Escapes. It was the kids' first time on horses. They were very excited, but once they got on the horses, they were pretty nervous. Kelly did a great job getting my daughter to do some deep breathing and checking back in with her. She kept my son's lead until he asked if he could do it on his own. I liked that she was flexible and didn't make him stay tied to her if he didn't feel he needed it. In the first few minutes of the ride, I think it was reassuring to him, but once he felt comfortable, she was great letting him be on his own. She also checked with me to make sure I was ok with it. The trail was nice and the horses were calm. Be sure to be flexible on your time frame. As with most things that take a lot of work, you cannot force them to always be on time. Keep your schedule for after the ride open so you aren't stressed if it takes a long time. You just won't enjoy it and neither will the horses if you get wound up. I loved our two hour trail ride this morning. I took my 8 year old niece and we met at their barn for the first ride of the day. They were very patient with my niece and let her help them take the horses to the trailer. Our guide was very patient and personable on the trail. Their horses are well cared for and healthy. They put my niece on a horse named Buck who was very gentle and steady. She wanted him to go faster and he obliged her a couple of times by breaking into a jog-trot which made her day. He was smart and knew the trail so her inexperienced flailing didn't phase him. I would definitely use them again. read more

Excellent time! Not sure what people are complaining about, she was professional, fun, knowledgeable and knows her horses quirks well. We got to trot in places to keep it from being boring. Please remember- horses have thoughts and feelings of their own. They aren't mindless drones. I rode Thunder who is beautiful, fun and a good listener if you reward and talk to him calmly. Horses are like humans, each has their own personality. Tip- Thunder loves his forehead scratched! Her horses are well cared for and good tack. My husband loved the ride and wants to go again sometime. I only wish an adults only ride was available. We had out of town visitors coming and when we told them we were going to take them riding, they were excited. Not having used EE before I was hoping it would live up to the hype. It did! Kelly was awesome. Everything was explained to us well before we got on the horses. She matched up riders ability and size to horses perfectly. We felt very safe with her the entire time. The horses are well cared for and do not look like rental horses. The terrain at Taylor Mtn is prettier than most trails I've seen around here (which I know is saying a lot, I know). 2 hours was just the right amount of time for us. It was a hot day (close to 100 degrees), but under the forest canopy it wasn't uncomfortable. We will definitely be renting from her again. Highly recommend. read more

Can I just say WOW!!! I went with a group of 6 girls and we had such a BLAST!!! THIS WAS SOOOO MUCH FUN!!! I have to admit, I was a bit nervous at first because I was riding someone else's horses but these are some of the most well trained and well behaved horses I have ever ridden. Kelly was knowledgeable, thorough, and very professional. She gave us good directions to the trail head plenty of time in advance and called each one of us the morning of to give us her ETA. She also provided us with some brief instruction on how to ride a horse properly and offered us helmets to wear. The trail we rode was beautiful and we had a great time. read more

Well, we got a slow, two hour trail ride. Eventually. Kelly is more concerned with socializing than running an efficient business. The saddles are poorly fitted, horses not given time to acclimate to new riders, and the timing is unreliable. Our 130 ride began at 240 and we waited. And waited. I bought a Groupon and redeemed very close to the expiration date. No hassles. I received an e-mail confirmation right away. As I wasn't sure how to get to the trail head, Kelly was very accesible by e-mail, phone and text. As far as the ride, it beat all my expectations. Kelly takes extremely good care of her horses, and that results in a great riding experience for both riders and horses. She is very patient with each rider, making sure they are comfortable and answers all questions. She is very engaged during the rides, seeing what comfort level the riders are at -- if we wanted to trot, we trotted, if we wanted to walk we walked. The experience at the ranch was also a lot of fun. I was warmly greeted right away and introduced to the animals. Being so close right here in Issaquah, I am sure I will ride here more frequently. I'm surprised Equine Escapes is getting so many bad reviews... I have been riding with this company for the past 3 years and have NEVER had any issues. I always go with a group of 6, or just myself and my boyfriend. I always request the same horse, which Kelly will take the time and catch for me, and I always text/email her to confirm 24-48 hours before the ride. I pay for full rides, off groupon, or discounted tickets which are available during the holiday season, and have never had any issues redeeming them. I will admit, Kelly's horses are not like the "normal" ones you see at other ranches. These horses have personalities, energy, life and enjoy the trails. You have control of which option you choose while booking your ride. If you're beginner, then please just choose "beginner". Don't go for intermediate, don't go for expert. You're going to be on a horse.. if you don't know how to control it then take a lesson or two before going on a trail ride. Anyways, I usually do the 2 hour trail ride and go with others who are comfortable traveling at a faster pace. We walk, trot, canter and it's always fun plus I get a nice full body work out. I have met most of her horses (and dogs too). Animals are taken care of and truly enjoy what they do. I would recommend equine escapes. read more

I was very excited to go trail riding for my birthday as I am an experienced rider and found such a wonderful deal on groupon. My husband is not experienced but has been riding before so we figured as a beginners trail ride it would be nice and relaxing. How wrong we were. We showed up about 20 minutes early to the destination given to us and this ended up being an abandoned house. We then called continuously for about 15 minutes with no response only to be called back with the news of her dog had ran away. After they got there about 30 minutes late, they did not bring enough horses and told us we had to reschedule. We had driven from 45 minutes away only to be told to go home and reschedule due to their mistake. They offered to let me ride and my husband to come back a different day because they did not bring enough horses. Customer service was non existent. When we came back a week later, and were accompanied by two visitors that spoke very little to no english. Kelly was very nice and went over some basic rules, regulations, and riding commands. She had me in back due to being experienced and we could heard the horses together so they stayed in line. Unfortunately the woman riding with us was veering off into the forest to eat and we had to continuously stop to get her back on track. She was also riding a horse the other horses didn't like, so when she would try to get the horse back on track the others would get uneasy and start to buck a bit. given we were in a line my husbands horse almost got kicked several times. The man began complaining about his stirrups not fitting properly, so Kelly decided to take us off trail in which we all had to let our horses feed off in the woods. Which we were told not to let them do because they would be hard to control. As we began climbing back onto the trail my husbands horse began eating the fern bushes. When he gave a basic command to get him back on the trail, the horse protested and began bucking, kicking, and running ahead. Kelly began yelling at the horse and my husband, being a beginner held on for his life. When he finally regained control of the horse, Kelly began to say he was food aggressive and and normally doesn't do that. She She then had no idea what to do. I mentioned to her that we should switch horses to get my husband off the horse with the attitude. She agreed and we switched. She then began yelling at the horse and calling him a "punk" after a swift smack in his face. As well as threatening to not give him treats and so forth. What a sad display. Just don't bring a "hot" food aggressive horse riding. Simple. After that whole mess and almost catastrophe that could have resulted in serious injury or death of my husband, she rode the rest of the way back talking on her cell phone. I had to instruct . The other riders numerous times on the way back due to their horses veering off and going to the bathroom. The woman was screaming and afraid due to her horse running and being pick on at his attempt to rejoin the line. When we got back Kelly apologized for being on the phone as she was giving directions to the lost group scheduled to ride after us. Horses are unpredictable especially when you do not have a standing relationship with them. When you get on a horse that doesn't know you their are risks. It was definitely an experience. They do not return phone calls..after repeated attempts. What kind of custormer service is that? They do not have carry first aid supplies while on the trail. Not even band aids. Weak follow-up after misshap. There are other companies out there that would serve one better. read more
