The Fat Man's wife wanted to try Eppings on Eastside for a bit, so we decided to head down and give it a go. Epping's on Eastside is an inventive, scratch-kitchen restaurant in an elegantly restored historic building in Lexington's Warehouse Block. I started with Old Fashioned, made with Old Forrester 100, Demerara syrup, bitters, and orange expression. The bourbon, bitters, and syrup meet the tongue at the beginning and then mellow together for a nice, sweet finish. This is a strong drink. The wife tried Mamaw's Little Helper. This is made with Vodka, Limoncello, house lavender syrup, lavender sugar rim, and fresh lemon. As expected, the lavender is very forward, but the lemon cuts through it. The sugar rim adds texture and sweetness; this was a strong drink but not too heavy on the tongue. We started with Pork Belly Burnt Ends made with Compart Farms Duroc pork, house chili rub, red chili honey, smoked pineapple salsa, crispy pork rinds, and petite cilantro. The chili offers a blast heat that lingers but doesn't overpower. The pork was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a bit of fat for flavor. The pork rind was chewy but after it soaked up the honey, made for a tasty bite. The salsa was fresh and bright with a cilantro pop. We also tried the Beef Tallow Fries, hand-cut and twice-fried potatoes served with tomatillo ketchup and chipotle mayo. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The ketchup was a sweet sauce and the mayo was creamy with good heat. Wifey had the Grilled Flank Steak with garlic Parmesan fingerling potatoes, baby arugula, balsamic demiglace, Calabrian chile butter, and crispy capers. The steak was a perfect medium rare but slightly tough. The Calabrian chili butter had a little heat and great flavor. The crisp capers offered a pop of vinegar and the potatoes had a great Parmesan taste with a slight crunch. The arugula added pepper to the bite. I went with Buttermilk Braised Chicken- two bone-in-quarter portions, pineapple BBQ glaze, sweet corn hoecake, smoked onion butter, and red cabbage slaw. The glaze had a lot of savory flavor and salt, but no pineapple BBQ. The first piece was slightly dry but the second was moist, and the skin was crispy on both. The cabbage hinted at vinegar but I wanted more as it was dry. The hoecake was fluffy with excellent taste, like a savory pancake. Eppings offers a full dinner menu, including salads, small and large plates, and desserts. They have a full bar and offer a brunch menu. The service was fantastic. The Fat Man says that Eppings on Eastside is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins. read more

When I learned of their reopening, I immediately made a Saturday evening reservation, 'cause the early bird catches the worm! It's a beautiful and elegant restaurant without feeling stuffy or pretentious. You can go totally casual, or step it up a couple of notches. It's a neutral, serene space with lots of natural elements and earth tones. The lighting is soft and soothing. Makes you want to linger. Bar seating is available with groupings of 2-3 barstools, so cozy. I like to start a nice meal with a cocktail. One blood orange cosmo, please. Image blood orange house-infused vodka with citrus juice. It's as good as it sounds. I heard the cocktail shaker all night, as many of the patrons were indulging. We don't normally order wine by the bottle due to the high markup, but they had a very good 2016 California Zinfandel blend at a great price. Of course they cork the remainder of the bottle to take home. The appetizer of choice was the beautifully prepared Salmon Tartine with charred scallion cream cheese, pickled red onion, crispy capers, and petite herbs on grilled house rye. No need to elaborate, as the description says it all. It was all I could do to share this dish! You can't go wrong with the nicely seared Dry Aged Bone-in Duroc Pork Chop from Compart Farms, with a New Mexico chili rub, smoked onion butter, accompanied by beef tallow fries and tomatillo ketchup. Compart is a fourth generation family-owned farm producing a heavily marbled chop, making it more flavorful and juicier. They aren't stingy with the smoked onion butter, and I've got the stain on my sweater to prove it! It was a large chop, and it defeated me. And it's also just about the best chop I've ever eaten. Let's talk about those beef tallow fries. I've had truffle oil fries in the past, and they were always sort of limp and soggy, so I was skeptical. These are a different story. Brown, crispy, and delicious. Not heart healthy, but who cares! Turns out the tallow has a high smoking point, making it ideal for frying. McDonald's originally fried their fries in beef tallow. You just learned something new. It was a slow, relaxing meal, what you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber. The meal was absolutely perfect, and I can't wait to delve further into the menu! read more

Eppings has a great makeshift outdoor (heated) tent setup so decided to try out their happy hour. We arrived just 5 minutes after opening so they were still getting ready for service but were still able to get seated quickly. The RJ Wings were awesome and the sliders may be the best sliders in town. We got beer and an Eastsider too. As usual the mixed drinks were really great. For this visit food and drink was a 5+ while service was about a 3.5. For example, we tried to order the happy hour drink but the server said he didn't know what it was. We said it was fine to go check but he told us we should just go ahead and order something else for now (full price of course) because "the bar probably doesn't even know yet". read more

It had been years since I'd been here, and let me tell you, they have truly upped their game! Previously the beautiful environment was the major draw, and the food was good but not outstanding. My recent visit truly impressed me! As always, the setting was beautiful and the service was kind and professional. I also happened to arrive during happy hour, which I will certainly be back for--$5 cocktails and half priced wine! Great cocktails. Phenomenal small plates--can't recommend the Roman Suppli enough. Monday 11.18.19 1:30pm there was a paper sign of the hours, which included Saturday & Sunday brunch as Yelp shows as well. Greeted by a manager & hostess, immediately seated up towards the bar in a comfy booth. Lovely ambiance & filtered glass water bottles. The hostess noticed the side plate was dirty & changed it. Nice attention to detail. Ordered w/ Tara who was excellent. Two cups of Tomato & Garlic Confit Soup w/ a wonderful basil pesto, croutons & freshly shaved Parmesan... delish on a cold afternoon like today. Also they split the Ham & Brie Panini for us on separate plates w/ the soup & these homemade chips that should be packaged, so good! The Ham & Brie Panini was made perfectly w/ a nice apricot jam & Dijon that cut the salt from the Ham. It could've used a lil more apricot jam, but overall it was great. Split w/ the cup of soup each was perfect for us at lunch. Our check was a lil slow coming & paying, but after the last experience I honestly didn't want to come back, not even to try the food. Once again, this is my favorite restaurant in Lexington. The menu changes often, which is great to try new things! Was sad to see the meatballs taken off the menu this time, but I'm sure they will be back. Today we had the beef kafta, blackened catfish, gnocchi (changes frequently, this time it had a beef cheek ragu which was amazing), mahamatra (spelling?) dip, daily special Caesar salad (not pictured, but delicious) and crab bisque (not pictured, but delicious). For the first time ever we were given rolls with butter also, which were great! While the beef kafta and catfish were delicious, they were pretty salty, so keep that in mind with ordering. I was really excited to try this place but felt like I came out of the evening with more misses than hits. Since I booked with Epping's I thought we would be seated on that side of the building but we were taken to the Poppy & Olive side. It's lit up like a high school cafeteria and was absolutely FREEZING in there with a constant draft on our legs. Definitely ask for the Epping's side when you make your reservation, it was enviously dark and cozy looking. I guess I didn't understand the menu well enough when I was ordering, there are small plates and large plates and I assumed the large plates were traditional dinners. I ordered the fish masala and I just got two large pieces of fish with no sides. It seems like maybe you have to order a large and a small plate to make a meal? The fish was $33 though so if I had added carrots or potatoes that would've made the meal $45. I mean it was a lot of fish but do I want several servings of only fish as a dinner? Our server seemed very new and tentative so perhaps he was supposed to suggest adding a side when I ordered? The specialty cocktails were good but minimal alcohol for $12 each. I would definitely stick to wine should I ever return. I think I would try again if I was sure I could sit on the Epping's side and I would only order a couple small plates. read more

Great place for brunch! Had friends visit from out of town and I knew exactly where to take them! It was a large group and Epping's was very accommodating for all of us. The waitress was very friendly and answered all of our questions. Epping's has a great brunch menu with many options. I ordered the Smoked Turkey Club and was very impressed, it was huge! I've been twice now - once for brunch and once for dinner. The restaurant is open and airy with beautiful decor. Small but creative cocktail menu. They make a great old fashioned! Other winners are the Eastsider and the Orange cosmo. Their menu is so appealing with lots of really delicious choices. I had their fried chicken sandwich when I went for brunch. I really enjoyed it. The seared sea scallops for dinner are amazing! The hangar steak looked fantastic as well but apparently has a bit of a kick with the spicy chili rub. Their fries are delicious and come with a spicy aioli and tomatillo ketchup. Everyone at the table was fighting for the tomatillo ketchup - it was incredible. Truly devastated I didn't get a photo of the French Toast and the Burrito because those were the stars of the show. Still thinking about the house raisin bread and Chantilly cream of the French toast. The kitchen does close at 2:00pm so they were out of biscuits by the time we ordered (~1:30pm) but honestly so grateful they let us make a reservation so close to closing! Came here for my birthday. They have a small parking lot which is very helpful. The entrance is great- very warm and the interior is very inviting. The menu is decent which a variety of different plates. The charcuterie board was very underwhelming. I would skip this. Bread was burnt, our order was incorrect. Their servers have room for improvement. They should understand what they are bringing out and if they are going to apologize, they need to know how to do it professionally. Our server was great, but he was getting sabotaged left and right. Bread came out with our entrees... timing was way off. Chips... I felt that I had dipped them in salt before eating each one. The impossible burger was great. Very delicious. Price wise- not meeting what I'm paying for. Overall, I think there is a lot of room for improvement. We will be back to give them another visit. We made reservations for 9 pm and were promptly seated. Our server was superb and so helpful. We started off with the strawberry and goat cheese salad which was extremely fresh and delicious. I loved the toasted pine nuts and honey balsamic vinaigrette! The crab bisque was incredible and I could've eaten 2 bowls or more of it. We finished off the meal with the cake flight which was a total show stopper. I'm a sucker for desserts so this was the best thing ever to me. With the food ($30. for 2 crab cakes is a bit too much for me) already costing a big price, tip, and fee is more than I can afford too often. It doesn't change my opinion of this restaurant. This was quietly literally the best meal I've ever had in Lexington. We got the Korean cucumbers and spring rolls for appetizers - amazing. I had the crab bisque and red lentils for dinner - superb. Everyone's else's dinner was amazing too - gnocchi, fish and chips, and salmon. All of the drinks were delicious. My fiancé and a couple of friends had brunch at Epping's to celebrate my birthday. This was the first time I've visited Epping's and it definitely didn't disappoint. Let's start with their delicious mimosas. We ordered a pitcher and it was very fresh tasting and the champagne used was wonderful as well. What's brunch without a mimosa right? I ordered the eggs benedict. The dish was "egg-celent" to say the least! The eggs were perfectly poached on top of smoked ham, spinach and grits. The grits were made into the shape of toast, which I thought was the cutest thing ever. Parking was a breeze. We were able to quickly find a spot. Also, due to COVID, they require everyone wear a mask when not at the table and took our temperature upon entering. They also added plenty of outside seating. read more

In ongoing efforts to stay home, I used DoorDash a few nights ago to get delivery from Eppings, a local favorite of mine. My goal was to get a couple of meals worth of food to last a couple of days. Fried pickles are always a favorite, so I helped myself to an order. Always delicious! For main courses, I ordered a Reuben, house cured and smoked beef pastrami, homemade sauerkraut, gruyere, 1000 Island, house rye, chips. Hands down the best Reuben in Lexington. For a second meal, I added a sandwich called El Jefe, roasted pork with mustard, pickles, etc. panini style, Eppings' take on a Cubano sandwich. Eppings' sandwiches are pretty hearty, so I ate a half sandwich at a time, spreading this delivery order our over two days and had more than enough food for two days. Also, it's worth noting that now Eppings is offering family style meals designed to serve several people, so you can easily order up a delivery or carryout order to feed the whole family! read more

We had a wonderful dining experience at Epping's on Eastside. We made reservations to dine on a Tuesday evening based on recommendations. We got to the restaurant about 10 minutes before our reservation so we decided to hang out by the bar and ordered some drinks. Before I get started on our food choice, let me say how much I liked the atmosphere and the decor of this restaurant. It was light and very modern. They had some quirky decors which were all tastefully situated around the dining area. We got to our table and ordered the following (which we all enjoyed): Charcuterie & Cheese, Garlic Hummus, Mushroom Bitterballen, Dry rubbed wings, Grilled pork chop & New York Strip. We enjoyed every one of them! I wish I had taken some photos but clearly, Yelp has a lot of them. So glad this place came highly recommended by a friend. She definitely has good taste. read more

My son has a dairy/soy allergy so I have been struggling to find options to eat at since he is nursing.
