During my visit to Kentucky, I dined at J. Alexander's. I settled at the bar and was greeted by the bartender. It was earlier in the evening, so they weren't too crowded. They had a fish special, so I decided to give it a try. The portions were generous, but unfortunately, the entire meal was excessively salty. It had a good flavor, but I'm not sure if I'd order it again due to this issue. However, I usually enjoy this restaurant, so perhaps next time, I'll opt for something else. read more

Was hoping for a better food experience but was let down again only by the food (service was good). It's truly at best a 4 star restaurant because of the details just being missed. I ordered an Alex salad with grilled chicken which was good but again there's hardly any bacon on it. I also ordered a loaded baked potato and had no clue it was $10, which seems extremely high especially since the potato was overcooked and nothing special about it. Also a friend ordered the mushroom pizza and I had to try it. It's been a while since we have been here and we love their Filet Kabobs Special. We callled first and confirmed that they had it tonight and they did! My wife ordered that and I thought I would try the Maui Ribeye. I believe that it is the same marinade with a different cut of meat. The Caesar is large and always delicious. GET. THE. CALAMARI. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you order but especially the calamari, Alex's salad, and the carrot cake. People have told me they do not like carrot cake and I convince them to take one bite and their whole world changes. 3/10/25 I had lunch here with a friend, and we were greeted and seated promptly. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making for a great first impression. We started with the queso chips as an appetizer, which were a tasty way to kick off the meal. For my entrée, I had the steak with French fries and a side salad, while my friend ordered the quinoa shrimp coleslaw dish. Ordered carryout on Saturday night. 5 stars for service: they forgot our carrot cake and not only called and offered to refund. But since we were able to turn around and get it, they gave us 2! Mistakes happen but I appreciated the takeout server making it right 3 stars for food: we ordered about $70 worth of food and none of it was particularly noteworthy. We ordered the following: 1 x CYPRESS SALAD with Cilantro Viniagrette 1 x STEAK TACOS (18.00 for 2 tacos is outrageous!!) 1 x MR. JACK'S CRISPY CHICKEN PLATTER with sides of Smashed Potatoes and Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese 1 x CARROT CAKE. The max and cheese has a sweet undertone which I was not a fan of. The steak tacos were fine, but super small portion for the price. The chicken which is supposedly something they are known for was pretty basic. The carrot cake size was big but overall nothing remarkable. Also a $4 package fee (I assume $1 per entree) is an interesting surprise. We had our company Christmas dinner here on Saturday night. The drinks, appetizers and entrees were all fantastic. We started off with the Deviled Eggs and Calamari. I had the Filet Mignon with Béarnaise and Loaded Baked Potato. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. My wife had the Carolina Crab Cakes. Others in our group had the Grilled Pork Tenderloin, Steak Maui, and Seared Ahi Tuna. We were all very pleased with our choices. For cocktails I had the Spiced Pear Old Fashioned (my favorite of the two) and The 859. For dessert, several of us split the Skillet Blondie with Vanilla Ice Cream. Our service was very good considering we had a group of 9. All of our food came out together and no one had to wait on theirs. Every server we encountered was polished, deeply knowledgeable about the menu, and full of spot-on recommendations. It is very delicious. My personal favorite meal was the hot honey pizza. All the pizzas have really thick crust that is very good. The French fries are really good and it is hard to stop eating them because they are so good! The waiters are very nice, although the food takes kind of a long time to come but it is worth the wait! Went for an anniversary dinner and had an amazing meal. My husband and I both got the prime rib. It was amazing The service is also amazing. I prefer J. Alexandra's over any of the other steak houses in town. It's much more affordable and the quality and service is top notch. This is my go to place for prime rib. You can make reservations if you like. We went at 5:30 and got a table with no trouble on a Friday night. I also like their lunch menu. read more

Yikes. Made a New Year's Eve reservation for my wife and myself to J. Alexander's. I have so so much to write but I'm going to keep it simple and fact-based. 1. After ordering and waiting some time, they came back and informed us they were out of the steak my wife ordered, and they offered an alternative. This came in at a higher price and we were charged the higher price. Technically correct to do this, but cheesy after a bait n switch. 2. Also the lower price item my wife ordered came with two sides, but the higher price one came with 1 side item, so they up-charged us another 9 dollars for the side item. 3. After waiting some time again, they informed us that the sides that we ordered (smashed potatoes) were also out and we could pick an alternative. We selected loaded baked potatoes (not that loaded, definitely sitting around a while, and so disappointing). At a restaurant with what looked to be 15-20 people working the kitchen, couldn't they have just made more smashed potatoes? Clearly they had potatoes. They just didn't care to take care of paying customers. 4. During my meal I ordered an Old Fashioned. I was informed that the bar was closing and I was "lucky to get what I got" which was a Jim Beam on the rocks...not even a bourbon that a high end restaurant would use to make a legitimate old fashioned. Gross. 5. In the final disappointing development of the night, we were hastily brought the check with no offer of dessert, which we had wanted. Clearly the server just wanted us out of there ASAP. What the heck J Alexander's? Perhaps we had one of the later reservations of the night (9:30) but we didn't expect to be treated like delinquent students with no right to a normal J Alexander's experience and full menu/bar. We made this reservation in good faith and no one told us things would be shutting down or anything. I had been to your Franklin TN location, had told my wife all about it, and made this reservation with the expectation of a quality restaurant and product. $150++ down the drain. Horrible experience which should have been a nice NYE. Goodness I'm just so disappointed. There's more to share...maybe I'll have to write part 2. read more

Went there for NYE. We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation. The house salad was not good at all; mostly cabbage and carrots and purple lettuce. I had one crouton in mine. No bread was served with the meal. Main courses were ok, but our waters and tea were never re-filled. The server was spread thin. We about never got our bill to leave; when we arrived, the excuse on not seating us was that people were just lingering, however, we saw first-hand it was just that it took a very long time to get the server to come with the bill. There were a lot of empty tables as well, which was surprising. Anyway, it was a disappointing experience for our New Year's Eve. Our experience was all over the place, but on the whole, quite poor. We had a lovely time chatting with Richard in the waiting area while literally every other party abandoned their 'reservation' to go sit at the bar, then every remaining party was seated before us. Did they all have reservations? I'd be curious to know. I didn't really observe Richard aiding in any expedition, only making pleasant small talk with us and others, sort of in an effort to 'pacify' and smooth over the inexplicable waiting. Once we were finally seated, 15 minutes past our reservation time, we noticed the restaurant was only 2/3 full, with empty tables all around. Perhaps a service shortage was to blame for all the delays? Jonny was our server and he started out strong, but ended up leaving us for over 30 minutes after our food was delivered, during which time we had no drinks and my husband didn't have a key component of his dish, which sat and got cold while we waited. It should be noted that my Thai Kai Chicken Salad was as-expected, plentiful and tasty, as described. Jonny recommended that my husband order Alex's Salad and add salmon on top with a side of cilantro vinaigrette - the latter being the ingredient left out that kept him waiting 30 minutes. The salad component was especially underwhelming (think anemic house salad from a bag) but add to it cold, flavorless salmon. Yuck. The saving grace of our entire meal was the starter, Deviled Eggs. They were perfect! My husband also didn't feel comfortable ordering a bourbon or two as he normally would, as there was a $2 upcharge for NEAT or on the rocks. What on earth? If that's the case just add $2 to the base price of all pours! Or if there's a reason that makes sense, state it plainly alongside the charge. Otherwise, maybe re-evaluate whether or not you should charge ambiguous, off-putting fees. This was my second or third visit, and my husband's first, and it goes without saying that we won't be back or recommend J. Alexander's to anyone. There is far too much good food in and around Lexington to waste your time or money here. That, and upon deeper inspection of the menu and the decor/ambiance, this restaurant really struggles with identity. What is it? Certainly not a steakhouse. Pork Tenderloin with Bang Bang Sauce? Mexico City Spinach Con Queso? Carolina Crab Cakes? It's a world tour that no one wants. read more

i have been coming here for quite some time and they have just received a new general manger (allen). He is pompous, rude, and the role has apparently gone to his head. I have watched him treat this forever staff with lack of respect for a few weekends now as well as his patrons. If you love this restaurant and its other employees please be kind, tip well, leave great reviews. One of the best restaurants in Lexington. We prefer locally owned places but this is one of the exceptions. Fabulous interior, great lighting, wonderful art, and comfortable booths and chairs. The calamari was cooked perfectly and the marinara sauce with Parmesan cheese was fabulous. My wife said her seared tuna was some of the best she'd had in quite awhile. I had the double bone grilled pork chop which was a special. Wow, just wow. Grilled just right and the sauce was wonderful. We both had the orzo salad which is to die for. After hearing so much about this restaurant, my husband and I made a reservation on the 13th knowing that the 14th was going to be crazy for Valentine's Day. We were seated right away and our waiter asked about our drink order-I asked for water with lemon, my husband asked for tea with lemon. We both got water. Once we decided on our entree our waiter, yet again, brought the wrong thing for my husband. The prime rib he ordered was at the most 40-45% fat (once he received his correct order). Beyond gross as well as disappointing. Few refills, our candle wasn't lit (I mean it was Valentines eve)-Everyone else had theirs lit; refreshing our waiter's' memory on what we ordered and when done with our meal-we received our check (not from our waiter but someone passing by) even though we wanted a dessert. I love J. Alexander's in the Summit. The food is amazing. I am a huge prime rib connoisseur and I have always been in 7th heaven with each bite. My husband is in love with their steak skewers. He doesn't leave a crumb. Our service by the wait staff has always been exceptional. Our last visit, the waiter was a bit over the top but I would take that every time over an indifferent waiter. My only issue is the restaurant temperature is too cold. I should have prepared better but was not expecting to be shivering in the summer. Small price to pay for all the other positives. read more

Service was not very good. At first I felt ignored and it took a while to be approached. Keep in mind I was at a pretty empty bar. She asked me if I wanted a drink after 10min and then came back 10min later and asked me if I wanted a drink. I gave her my drink order, again, and she said "oh I forgot before." I ordered the prime rib and it was served nice and rare like I asked for, but it was salty and mashed potatoes were bland. Then after I was a quarter of the way through my food the bartender comes up hands me a steak knife and said "sorry I forgot to give you this."
