A friend and I recently rented a car for a week in which we drove from Edinburgh to southwest France and back. We had the car reserved online for 9:00 am, and arrived at 8:45. They did not have our car ready for us at 9, and when I asked if they had another car that was ready, they said yes, but I'd have to pay for an upgrade. As an excuse, the lady made a few remarks about how they don't really take road trips in this country, and therefore have fewer cars available to rent. She also made a comment about how we would "obviously" need an automatic because we're American. Never mind the fact that I had specifically reserved an automatic, so that's what I expect to get. We are both very capable of driving standard shift, just not very comfortable doing it on the right side of the car.
I asked for a sat nav, and they did not have any available. Again, I asked if they had any cars that had a sat nav in it, but again was told I'd have to pay for an upgrade. She then shrugged and told us to go to Tesco and buy a GPS there. Mind you, we were already running late because our car was not ready, and we had a ferry to catch. Obviously we don't have time to go to Tesco and buy a sat nav. I asked if they had any maps of the UK and France. They have no maps. Not even for sale.
After telling her we bought icarhire insurance for £3/day, she still was trying to push us to buy the extra insurance provided by Enterprise for £17/day. I am also insured through AAA, and told her several times I did not want to buy the extra coverage. She insisted that I at least buy the basic coverage for windshield, tires, and undercarriage, which cost us £5/day. She was very adamant that it was imperative and we had to have it, that it was foolish to rent the car without it. Complete waste of money.
Normally when I have rented a car in the past, they will show you all of the functions and features of the car, tell you what kind of gas to use, etc., when you get in the car. They did nothing of the sort. Just walked around the car with us to point out any existing scratches and handed over the keys.
When I returned the car, their system was down. I was told they would email a receipt as soon as their system came back up, no later than midday. This was yesterday. It is now after 6 and I still have not received my receipt. I finally went on the website and found that I could get it from there, but no one in the store had the courtesy to tell me that yesterday.
Their slogan is "American Customer Service." I beg to differ. American customer service is outstanding and commendable. Enterprise UK's customer service is absolute bull. This was the worst car rental customer service I have ever encountered. read more
