Security Deposit of £1,505.00 not Refunded After 3.5 months! We hired a car from Green Motion Edinburgh Airport from 25 July to 3 August 2025. The car was returned undamaged on 3 August 2025. A security deposit of £1,505.00 was deducted from our credit card on 28 July 2025. This deposit has not been refunded by 15 November 2025 despite repeated requests for both refund and explanation for the delay. Green Motion have sent 2 emails on 18 August 2025 and 1 October 2025 saying the deposit will be refunded. Since then we have had no response to emails or phone calls. We are now back home in Australia and this has become very stressful and difficult to deal with given a total lack of communication and the tyranny of distance. We have been regular customers of Green Motion UK since 2018 and have never had an issue but waiting 3.5 months for a refund of a security deposit is both ridiculous and unacceptable. read more

Complaint :866311 Signed copy of RED-141816 I paid a £1,505 deposit on the 24th July 2025, which was later processed incorrectly as a sale rather than a hold. I was told this was due to a system error following a software update. Despite several emails and reassurances from their customer service team (including "proof" of a refund supposedly made to an American Express card which I never used), I have still not received my refund. I've been chasing this for weeks, and all I've received are generic responses, no real accountability, and no genuine apology. Their handling of the situation has been slow, confusing, and unprofessional. I've incurred £120 in charges from my card provider because my funds were unavailable, and the stress and inconvenience this has caused has been significant. Furthermore the pending funds means my credit report is showing that I am using over 50% of my available balance which I am not, its just that this company has refused to refund me my money. What's most concerning is that Green Motion seems to think this is acceptable. They keep saying the refund has been processed, yet it hasn't reached me. I'm now preparing to escalate this to Trading Standards, Advice Direct Scotland, and the Financial Ombudsman. No customer should have to fight this hard just to get their own money back. I read many poor reviews here after booking (through Booking.Com) I mentioned this when collecting the car from the Edinburgh branch and was advised that Edinburgh and Glasgow reviews are lumped together And I could be assured of a good service. If I could assign ZERO stars I would. A horrible experience. Every step of the process was grueling. Couldn't find the place as signage and directions from EDI were not current. Upon picking up the rental we had to wait 90 mins and then told the only car left was a tiny yaris. We were informed that the rental was not unlimited mileage and had to pay an additional 900 pounds for unlimited mileage. We got a flat time and apparently bent the rim and scuffed the sides (although it looked like the rim and side door had been damage prior). We were charged another almost 800 pounds for damages and getting the $$ back via insurance was a nightmare. We could have bought a car! NEVER EVER USE THIS RENTAL COMPANY. I´ve had extremely negative experiences with GreenMotion Edinburgh. The uncleaned interior of the rental car was not worth mentioning, but the lack of air pressure in the tires was a safety risk (0.6 bar instead of the prescribed 2.2!), so the first thing I had to do was go to a gas station to check all the tires. When I returned the vehicle, it was assumed that I had caused 3 scratches on the rear underbody protection; damage costs: 556 GBP. Unfortunately, when I picked up the vehicle, I had not taken any pictures of the underbody protection, only of the rear view. Since I could not prove that the scratches were already there, I had to pay the (completely excessive) damage costs or report them to the insurance company. With the same method I had to pay for damage that was allegedly caused when I first rented the car four years ago; over 300 GBP for a dent in a rim. Unfortunately, there was no photo documentation or extra insurance at the time. I suspect that GreenMotion is luring customers with cheap rental rates in order to then recoup the difference in profits via customers/insurance companies by claiming damage to the vehicles and paying the self-imposed, overpriced repair costs for minor damage. I will definitely not rent from this company again and can only urgently recommend that all customers take complete photo documentation (including the underbody). read more

The staff exploit customers knowing that international renters don't have too many recourse options once they rent. 1. after the rental, They claimed tyre damages which looked like regular wear and tear and charged me 100s of pounds. Be prepared for fake damage charges after you return the vehicle, and the ridiculous demands for paperwork to avoid their insurance charges when picking up your car. My insurance is covered automatically through Chase but I had to call Chase to get a letter emailed to me that I had to email to the location before they would release the car without the 200% upcharge for insurance. I drove the car off the lot and about 3 miles down the road I noticed a stone chip on the driver's side of the windshield - I took a picture of it with GPS and timestamp less than an hour later when I arrived at my destination. After I returned the car (out of hours - what rental place is only open 12 hours a day at an airport???) I got an email some hours later indicating there was damage and they hit me with a $90 charge to cover it. I challenged it and sent the pic with the info and they said I wasn't telling the truth and they advised they would process the charge. I've reported them to qeeq.com - the sire I made the booking through - and I'll make sure to avoid GreenMotion in the future. While I was picking up my car, a group of Spanish tourists were arguing with the agents about their booking - they had a reservation for a nine person minivan and there was one on the lot, but the agents insisted they were correct in giving them a box truck instead!! There is no honor amongst thieves, and these guys are the lowest of the low. I reserved a car at their Waverly location, and when I arrived they didn't have a car for me. So they gave me a van to drive over to the Edinburgh Airport location, to pick up the actual car I reserved. It was a 30 minute, incident free drive. When I arrived, their car inspector went over the van with surgical precision, and claimed that I damaged the van in excess of $1600! The "damage" was nothing more than some minor rubbing on the plastic runner on the doors, which don't even show up in photos in daylight, much less in a dark parking garage where I picked it up. They absolutely refused to listen to reason, and charged my card for £1205 without my authorization for "repairs". These people have no honor, no decency, and no humanity. They even had the gall to ask for an extra £1205 for the deposit on the next vehicle, as if I wasn't going to cancel my weeklong reservation after all the bullshit they had just put me through. These people are the absolute worst, and prey on those who are on vacation with no options. These people are crooks, and I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire. read more

The worse experience I've ever had with a car company! My own car had broken down, and so needed to hire one for a couple weekends. The first weekend, I hired a four door economy and when I went to pick up, I was told my car was not available. Instead, I was offered a smaller weak Fiat 500. I was in a hurry, and so I accepted it. The following weekend, I also rented a four door economy, except this time I called the day before to make sure it would be available to avoid any delays. I was told that it would be available. When I went to pick up, it wasn't available and again was offer a smaller weak Fiat 500 which I refused and expressed my frustration given I was given assurance the day before when I had called to confirm. The manager began making excuses which I did not have time for nor were they relevant to me. I asked for a refund so that I could go somewhere else as the exchange got escalated. And I added insurance when reserving online but it wasn't on my receipt (nothing itemized, just a total on receipt) and then I was pressured to buy insurance again and it was more than double the cost compared to adding to the online reservation. The car pickup address was not clear and understandable, It wasn't an official address , just go right at the station and go left , And after trouble and research, you get a reply in all its insolence, oh, you're late .. The question here is why was the collection time not mentioned before booking , And it comes after booking in a hidden and not clear. Green Motion Review WARNING! FRAUD!! This place is a scam operation against which I am currently taking legal action. Our story: My elderly, disabled mother and I booked a car hire for 21 days through a broker that represents Budget, Alamo, Enterprise, etc. All the big companies, so I didn't bother to google Green Motion out of a false sense of security. IF the broker was legit so must the car rental company. Biggest mistake ever. After a 2 hour wait to receive our car they informed me they didn't have the car I booked. They instead gave me an "upgrade" and charged me accordingly. Moments after driving out of the car park, smoke started coming from the car. I pulled over and called Green Motion who told me if the car broke down to call the roadside assistance of the car make since they do not maintain their own roadside assistance. I told them I wanted to return the vehicle and get another. The car broke down on the way back. By this time, we had had the car for 15 minutes and had driven 3 miles. I called Green Motion and they immediately started telling me I had damaged the vehicle and it was clear this was my fault. They refused to give me a refund or a replacement vehicle. I called my credit card company and cancelled the charges. After a few weeks Green Motion sent a fraudulent letter to my credit card company full of lies and Visa had to put the charges back on. THEN, they've attempted to charge my credit card even though I paid for full liability insurance. The damage to the car? The hydraulic cable to the slave cylinder which could have only been damaged by undercarriage impact. Cost of the repair? $300 at most. Cost Green Motion has been trying to charge my credit card? Various sums in the vicinity of $3600. Plus they've sent threatening emails saying they were going to send me to debt collection. I am now in contact with some Scottish lawyers about bringing fraud charges against this company. This has been the worst rental experience in my life. I'm 51 years old and have travelled abroad many times. Renting a car is a necessity in some cases and most of my experiences have been pleasant, but Green Motion is the most money hungry company I've encountered. It reminds me of the song "...charge them for the lice extra for the mice, two percent for looking in the mirror twice" song from Les Miserables. The original car rental was $250 for a 3 day compact car rental. At check in we were charged an extra $150 for mandatory insurance at the lowest coverage which included a $1600 credit card "Holding" charge and covered almost nothing. Three days later we returned the car and were charged an additional $250 for a new tire due to "excessive scuffing" on the side of the tire. So the total charge was $650 for a compact car 3-day rental AND a $1600 holding charge which is yet to be reversed after 3 weeks. They also asked for excessive personal information when making the booking (are they selling it to advertisers?). This was the only rental option at the airport when we booked our flights. I assume everyone else was avoiding them like the plague as we will in the future. read more

Their pattern is to lure consumers with cheap prices and then find damage on the car and charge them thousands when the consumer returns it. In my case, they rented me a car that had pre-existing mechanical damage, which broke down within 3 miles. They didn't give me a refund or replacement vehicle, lied to my credit card companies to block my dispute, and then tried to charge me thousands of dollars for the damage to the car. I booked through a trustworthy broker and so didn't bother to research Green Motion because I figured the broker had vetted them. The check-in procedure borders on criminal behavior. Standing in line for over an hour in a hot cramped trailer teeming with Covid, I heard countless people enraged by a sudden change of terms in their terms requiring them to pay insurance totaling several hundred extra dollars. No doubt, the staff is on a commission basis and I would lock up them and everyone in their management team who is in on this scheme. They tried to pull the same thing on me, too. I brought a letter from my credit card company stating it would be responsible for secondary insurance, per the terms in the fine print in the contract. But an agent still refused to accept it because it didn't state the amount of coverage. There was nothing in the contract about that, it covers every penny quite obviously, and only because I raised holy hell did the rental agent go into a side room and come back ten minutes later to say she found information on the internet that covered it. What a lie. The terms in the rental agreement are beyond the pale, as well, sprung on you at the last minute such as fining customers for a common speeding ticket, etc. No, the answer is Green Motion should be shut down by authorities due to rampant corruption and fleecing defenseless people from around the world who are trying to enjoy a rare holiday. Avoid Green Motion at all costs. This company's business model is a scam. They trick customers into claiming responsibility for damage that they are not responsible for. My wife and I traveled to Scotland for our ten year wedding anniversary (her first time to travel internationally) and after long flights we arrived at Green Motion only to be welcomed by the worst scam that I have ever fallen for. As of now we are out nearly $5,000 because of mechanical damage that they tried to pin on us. The car broke down literally 5 minutes within leaving the facility. We never received another car but were left without transportation in a foreign country and $5,000 out of our pocket. It is not worth it. Please spend the money to go with a reputable rental company, I wish I had. Additionally, they refuse to contact me. It took 7 weeks for me to get any information from them, and they refused to give me an invoice or any proof that the driver was at fault. It is without a doubt a scam. The car they gave us stopped running while at highway speed's on seven or eight locations. Had to pull off which is a real safety issue on all but one occasion. Additionally they insisted I upgrade to get a GPS unit which could not find any of the places where we were staying. It also missed lead us in visiting two different sites that we wanted to see. Our cell phones saved us even though the counter person insisted we would not have cell phone coverage which is why they wanted us to upgrade to a car with the GPS. So effectively they charged us about $100 more for something we didn't really need. When returning the car I insisted on speaking with a manager. She treated us very in differently with a weak apology and said they would have the car checked. Stay away from this company! read more

This company was MISERABLE! Do not patronize them for any reason. I waited in line for over 45 minutes just to get to the counter. Every single person in front of me had major issues with renting the car -- all of which involved extremely high additions to the price of the vehicle. You cannot provide your own insurance through your credit card unless you have a written agreement that the insurance company covers this(who carries around such things?). So, add 25 British Pounds per day. But, even if you have such documentation, certain professions still cannot be covered. Even though my profession was not on the prohibited list I was still told I had to purchase their insurance because the list was not comprehensive (?). If you are under 25 there is an additional premium. Add 50%. For some people the car they had reserved was not available, but they could upgrade them -- for an extra cost. They wanted a deposit of 1,000 British Pounds for damage. The people that did get cars came back and complained that the cars were dirty and only had half a tank of gas. I ended up walking away, went to Sixt and got a reasonable price and was in-and-out in less than 5 minutes. Green Motion sucks! I cannot say enough bad things about this company.
