This is a review for the Haymarket location, but Hertz refuses to take responsibility for their mistake, so I wouldnt recommend them anywhere. I picked up my rental car from the Downtown Edinburgh location on 7/23. I spoke with Giorgio at this location. He gave me multiple pieces of incorrect and confusing information. He told me that my car was not prepaid (it was booked via Chase Travel and I received a confirmation of this booking directly from Hertz and was pre-paid). I told him that I did not want any additional insurance from Hertz. He indicated that the £208 amount was for the car rental. When I returned the car on 7/25, I discovered that the £208 amount was for the insurance, which I did NOT want. Hertz refused to refund the charge even though it was their employees mistake and misrepresentation of the charge that confused me. Horrible company. Horrible service. If I could give HERTZ in Edinburgh (near the airport) zero stars, I would. We had reserved a automatic, mid-size car, well in advance of our trip. When we arrived, the options given were manual transmission, petrol driven or automatic, electric. While that sounds like a no-brainer, it is NOT. Since it was going to be difficult driving on the left, shifting with our left hand would make driving hazardous to everyone on the road. Reluctantly, we took the automatic, electric vehicle. The HERTZ rep showed us a map of all the EV charging stations in the UK. That map is WRONG. Over half the EV charging stations were broken. Calling the HELP number verified that the particular station we were at was scheduled to be fixed - like 2 months ago. Another 25% would not take credit cards - you needed an RFID card that cannot be picked up anywhere in the UK, it has to be mailed. So, we ended up sitting at an EV station while the car charged - easily for an hour at a time - after we'd spent more than an hour driving from station to station only to find them either broken or not accepting credit cards. This situation was worse in the Highlands and on Islay/Skye. When we found an EV station that worked, it was usually in an isolated place. No restaurants, no shops, not even a nice hiking trail. So we had to sit in the car while it charged. This took a chunk of time out of our 2 week vacation and added frustration and stress to a time we should be relaxing. HERTZ and other rental car companies in the UK need to give renters an RFID card so they can use more of the EV charging stations. We'd have been happy to pay HERTZ at the end of the trip for any EV charges if they'd had given us an RFID card. Bottom line: if renting an automatic transmission car in the UK, be prepared to sit at EV charging stations almost every day because finding one that works is like finding a piece of glass on a sandy beach. Also, having a navigator help the driver with the roundabouts - which are everywhere - is critical. The driver will be having enough trouble staying on the left but merging into and out of the roundabouts can be complex, especially if the roundabout is 3 lane deep. Good Luck! read more

I would use Enterprise or Eurocar. They seem to have more options for returning cars and would probably have better communication processes for US travelers. We rented from the Arch location in London. Drove to York, which had no return options: the local Hertz office was closed and is not updated on the Hertz website. Yelp still showed it as open even-though it closed years ago too. Experienced same issue in Edinburgh, with the City Centre location closed. read more

I had scheduled to drop off my rental here. The day before I called to extend the contract by a day and change the drop off to the airport. Because they were busy nobody answered so I left a voicemail. They handled my request promptly and without issues. We confirmed the change about an hour later. Great service! read more

In line waiting for a car felt like eternity with these guys, with limited staff being seen to took nearly an hour. The staff that l did see made your wait even longer due to them trying to up sell extras to the customers waiting for their rental. With my eagle eye I scanned the car for damage and found two areas with damage, if you are not on the ball you will be invoiced. There is an app where you can book a rental, but is hard to navigate, and when you have booked & paid for a car I found ours had canceled some how and we ended up paying again. The only good thing l did see was a free water dispenser. But be aware nothing in life is for free. read more

Do not book with HERTZ for a rental car in the USA....We booked a car through Kayak in March and and paid for the car in full. However we have yet to receive confirmation and the money has been paid. Trying to contact HERTZ via phone or email is virtually impossible and even to speak to a UK office the phone number is a premium line. I have spoken to a women in Hong Kong who could not speak English and was a complete waste of time and i then resorted to having an online chat with Abdul from the Middle east who was useless... We have emailed HERTZ and told that they will be back to us in ten days? You have taken our money now all we ask is for a conformation email. I have a few tips for Americans visiting this Hertz location. 1) Give yourself plenty of time to get the car. It took us 75 minutes. 2) If you have never driven in the UK, pay the extra money and get an automatic transmission AND the GPS. Try and get a small or mid-size car as the roads in the UK are narrow. For our car, the GPS was an extra 100 pounds for the 8 day rental and it was worth every penny. Your phone with Google Maps might not update quickly enough to make the many turns needed to get around. And, if you have not previously driven in the UK, watch some YouTube videos on how to survive the roundabouts and narrow roads. 3) Carefully exam your car before leaving the lot for damage. We decided that Hertz is on the verge of closing down its Scotland operations. There was only one agent in Edinburg when we arrived at 9:30 on a Sunday morning, and he spent most of his time complaining how busy he was because nobody else showed up for work. This was minor compared with the 30 hours of bad experience due to having a flat tire 2 hrs down the road. Called the recovery number and they asked us (80 yrs old) to look and see if there was a spare tire (no). The tow truck took us and the car to our hotel 60 miles away. The recovery group arranged a taxi to take us, the next morning, to what they said was the nearest Hertz office (Stranraer ferry terminal about 90 miles away). We walked in the terminal lobby and the ferry agents said the Hertz office closed several years ago. After 3 hrs of multiple calls to recovery people, another taxi arrived to take us to Glasgow airport Hertz office, about 2 hrs farther north. Arrived there at 4:30 pm (on a Monday) and, you guessed it, no Hertz employee was out in the lot or behind the desk. The other rental agency employees at nearby desks at Glasgow airport told us they hadn't seen an agent there for days. Called the recovery people again and they said to get a hotel near the airport and come back the next morning (we had no suitcases and all our stuff was at our hotel back in Newton-Stewart, 100 miles away). So we finally gave up on Hertz and rented a car from Europcar (who I would give five stars). Side-note - We tried calling the UK Hertz number many times but no answer and no response to messages. The only Hertz people that we talked to on the phone were the recovery agents that they hire as a third party (or so I was told). Follow-up - Hertz did refund us our rental payment (after many calls to AAA-Hertz office after we returned to the US). However, five weeks later, they are still trying to collect $600 from us for the flat tire repair. read more

Horrible experience. When we arrived to pick up the vehicle in Inverness Scotland, the Hertz representative instructed us to review the vehicle's exterior for defects such as dents and scratches; there were no exterior defects identified upon our initial inspection. During the initial hour of use, the driverside sunvisor fell from the interior headliner when attempting to unfold; it was clear that the sunvisor was not secured properly to the interior headliner. Upon returning the vehicle, we notified the Hertz representative of the situation in which he stated we would be liable for the damage. I have attached the Damage Appraisal Report referencing his assessment. Upon reviewing the Honda installation manual for this vehicle, the instructions specify that a tool would be required to remove a sunvisor, which leads us to believe the vehicle was damaged prior to us taking possession and the sunvisor was incorrectly re-installed. Having previously used Hertz, it was surprising how a company representative would make such an assessment of liability given the following: 1. We were directed by a Hertz representative to evaluate the exterior portion of the vehicle. Even if she had asked to evaluate the interior portion, would Hertz expect their customers to test every mechanical or functional item? This seems unrealistic. 2. The Honda installation manual states that a tool is required to remove a sunvisor from their vehicles. Prior to this incident, we were content using Hertz for our car rentals, at least in the US; however, based on this experience, we WILL NEVER use Hertz for future rentals anywhere they rent vehicles. We wrote a letter to their damage collections department to discuss their GBP 177.26 charge and was surprised by their response: they would not rescind. Never again. read more

I emailed them back (8/1) to say it was the wrong invoice ... they still have not made any contact. Worst car rental company. Avoid them. Very long line for car rental. Plan ahead! Lady who helped us, simona, was great. Another man brought us to the car and explained if we even had a scrape on the tires we would get charged! Huh? The roads are so narrow and it's almost impossible to avoid a bump against a curb here and there. Be warned! We decided to return to a different location (airport) and it was impossible to contact them over the phone or email to make this simple change. Terrible experience picking up a car at Picardy Place. We had a "reservation" for a car at 10. We got there a little after and there was a long line - barely moving -- that took us over 2 hours. Over and over we heard their justification, that their HQ reserves a certain number of cars per day, but they dont manage when the pick up is going to be. To which I ask, then why do you ask your customers what time they are coming? So as a customer, you may get lucky and not have much of a wait, but if you come when everyone else comes, then prepare to stand in line. When we finally got to the front, we were told there were no more automatics. Oh, and be sure that if you have Hertz Gold Club (which I do) you book through that particular website -- you can't just book through the regular Hertz website. Just telling them you have the gold card once you get there, is too late. Also, when we returned the car, the check in guy tried to claim that we did some damage to the wheel, and was about to charge us for it, when he noticed and had to admit that the damage had been marked on our slip as preexisting before we rented it. So a few things: 1) try renting at the Edinburgh airport -- I think they have a larger supply of cars; 2) book through the Hertz Gold website if you want quicker service, and 3) make sure you really do inspect for damage before you go out, no matter how long you have waited and how many people are behind you shooting you dirty looks because they too have been waiting. i have always booked a van hire in dundee at marketgait but as this is now closed i have had to go online to register even although hertz must have my details as we have hire often. the process online requires photos sent copies of licence etc. this is not available to us and we cannot understand why they cannot use the details they must have from all our previous hires. we have now booked with another company and will certainly not be recommending hertz. read more

I hired a car in Inverness from Hertz. Service not the best, you have to look for their van in car park to pick up and hten again to return. Not particularly customer friendly on collecting. All this would not have prompted me to write a review, however I had made up my mind not to use them again. However I received a receipt through the post telling me that they had paid a £60 parking fine for me to a parking company that I had not heard off and that they had charged me £42 for doing so. they had not even passed my details to the parking co so that I could argue. I had paid in the car park and now I am going through a long process to try to claim my money back and it will probably no happen. High pressure upsales and didn't have the car or equivalent with GPS as reserved. Whole process took almost 2 hours to get a vehicle we had reservations for. They had us wait outside in the rain while they drove the car from another location. Four times they tried to push us into a more expensive rental for as much as 4 times the original rental cost. read more

We used a travel service for our trip. They were supposed to take care of our car rental. We arrived on a Sunday morning to pick up our car and David, in on a Sunday when he wasn't scheduled, helped us realize, though the reservation number and address provided were Hertz, the reservation was with Enterprise. He then drove us there to find out it was closed on Sundays. He drove us back and made calls to find out where we needed to be and gave us the best options on how to get there. We missed a few hours....but David saved our day....helping us out when he had little incentive to do so. Our next rental will be through Hertz, no doubt. read more

I'm typically a Hertz fan so I kind of dislike writing this. Hertz in Edinburgh, never again. We all know the nature of the beast is to try to up-sell a customer, no harm, no foul. But once the customer says 'no' it really is time to move on and complete the paperwork to let the customer leave to continue their vacation. 4 of our last 6 trips to Edinburgh, we have rented from Hertz city center location. Always rude desk workers make it miserable for a bit before you leave, kind of normal, but this last trip was incredibly bad. The rep argued with us, "You don't need a car that big" he said several times. We've done this trip repeatedly and know that you should rent the smallest size to meet your needs...Scotland's roads are very good, but can be extremely narrow for the unaccustomed American driver. When just the 2 of us with 2 carry-ons, we got a little fiesta....when we took 5 other family members we got a 9 seater van to hold us and our luggage. This time we prepaid for a minivan for 5 of us (plus luggage). This guy did not accept that we really wanted that particular vehicle. He was rude, pushy, and then would say, "I am trying to help" to which I responded, "Then put us in what we prepaid for so we can make it to Glasgow on time" (we had a lunch date with some dear Glaswegian friends). Finally made it out the door...1.5 hours after arriving, Now shaking angry, and of course late to Glasgow to boot. And to make matters worse, the poor Australian lady with the rep right next to us was literally in tears because her desk worker was berating her, telling her she SHOULD be able to drive a manual transmission even though she reserved an automatic and it had been 30 years since she'd driven a manual. Really??? Think turn-in would have to be easier, right? Nope! We filled up to the top less than 3 blocks (literally a 2 minute drive) from the location and they tried to hit us with fuel charges. Had to show the receipt (yes, I'm serious) for them to accept it was filled up so near and waive the fees. Crazy. Another hour or more of precious Scotland time wasted. Buyer beware of Hertz in Edinburgh. Last year we rented from Arnold Clark to get our big nine-seater....no issues at all, in and out in less than 20 minutes with pleasant customer SERVICE folks. So it isn't all rental companies in Edinburgh by any means, just Hertz. And that was the final straw for this renter who usually likes to give folks the benefit of the doubt. read more

Hertz was an EPIC FAIL in terms of service. My husband and I rented a car to drive from Edinburgh to a castle in Ayrshire, where our daughter was getting married. All was well until we experienced a flat tire less than half a mile from the castle gates. We jumped out of the car, unloaded the luggage to look for the spare. Much to our shock and chagrin, there was no spare and we had not been advised by the Hertz staff that there was no spare, nor any flat tire repair kit. We could do nothing but limp into the castle gates with the flat tire. Once inside the gates, the castle staff came to our rescue by immediately phoning Hertz to call for a new tire. Hertz said they could send one out, but an hour later, they advised us that there would be a GBP 90 charge because it was Sunday, but that there would be no charge for Monday morning. We agreed we could wait until early Monday morning, preferably by 8am. The next Morning Hertz called to adivse us that they couldn't get the tire there until 11am. Then they called and said not until 3pm. Then called again to say 5pm. Then they called again to say they couldn't get there at all with the tire because the car required a "special" tire. Mind you, this is all happening on the day of the wedding. Fortunately for us, the castle staff fielded the calls and kept us abreast of the situation. SInce Hertz could not deliver the "special" tire and there was no tire repair kit to be found (and the car had been searched stem to stern three times), we asked for Hertz to send us a new car. Hertz said they would send a recovery truck for the vehicle and us. We advised them that there were 4 of us and we all had luggage. Hertz said they could rescue us between 11:30 and 12noon on Tuesday, the day after the wedding. At 12:30 Tuesday, there was still no sign of a recovery truck or transportation for us. We called Hertz. Hertz said they couldn't get to us until 2:30. At this point, after so many failed promises, we had had enough. We called Hertz London to complain. We advised them that we would leave the car and the car keys with the capable staff at the caslte, but that we were taking a taxi to Glasgow because we had appointments to keep. We futher advised them that we would be submitting receipts, our contract and the documentation provided by the castle of the calls and failed promises. To date, after several calls and personal visits made to the Glasgow Hertz while in Scotland and letters of complaint, together with documentation, since leaving Scotland, we have received no satisfaction from Hertz. Hertz has charged us not only for the rental of the car, but also for the inflated gas tank refill (which, of course, we couldn't refill since we couldn't drive the car). We used to think that renting from a premium rental company ( which Hertz would have you believe they are one) would save us from disasters like the one described above. Absolutely abysmal experience with Hertz 24/7, right through from beginning to end. I was hoping to rent a van for an hour in order to collect furniture we had just bought for a new apartment. The arrangement whereby the vans are stationed in "local" B&Q's and IKEA's is complex to the point of absurdity. I wouldn't be the slowest on the uptake, but I had to ask the poor assistant on the phone line to explain it a full 3 times before it started to make sense. I will note at this point that the helpline staff were generally pleasant and sincere in their time and assistance. When collecting the notorious "fob" from the office in Picardy Place, the service was slow and apathetic. Upon finally reaching the top, I was informed that I was not old enough (I'm 22) to complete my rental, despite having already discussed my details over the phone and made the payment, all with no issue. It was only on closer inspection, after 5 mins of debate, did the clerk check my application properly and notice that my reservation was for a rental van, and not a car. That's right, to drive a Ford Transit van, the driver need only be 21. To drive a Hertz car, on the other hand, the driver needs to be a ripe 23. Logic, right? Job done, and I brought the van back in one piece, keen to be rid of such a protracted and exhausting process. Three months later, however, I get a delightful email from Hertz informing me of the latest activity on my account. Huh? Two invoices: a "Bus Lane Fine" to the tune of £30, and an "Administration Fine" of £35. Offering skint explanation to accompany the spontaneous fines, I replied to Hertz asking for a little elaboration. I received another automated mail stating that both fines stem from a picture taken by a council camera of my van venturing into the bus lane near my flat. Being new to the country, and having never been behind the wheel on its roads, I wasn't as attuned to the bus corridors as I should have been. I can't blame the council for snapping a photo and issuing a fine - that's fair enough. However, for Hertz to conjure up a £35 "Administration fee" from thin air seems extortionate to the point of comedy. "As outlined in the terms and conditions" - a lazy guise behind which to hide while squeezing customer pennies. Maybe I should have read the extensive terms and conditions. Or maybe I shouldn't have afforded any semblance of faith to the notion that such an established brand wouldn't try to rip me off. I won't use Hertz again any time soon. read more

Although most of the staff are very friendly the dangerously underpowered Clio (75 bhp - try joining a motorway in that !) they gave me (after booking a compact size ie focus/golf) was completely unacceptable. Kerry the manager was unhelpful in the extreme, telling me it was their standard for that clsss. they had no other vehicles to change it for without it being an upgrade in their eyes and so I would have to pay more...so with Hertz you will get a free downgrade and only a paid upgrade. When I made a formal complaint later, she told me she was very busy and would get back to me with some rubbish about being number 1 in customer service !!!....she never did. And I have never rented from Hertz again even although when I lived in the US I was hertz gold....great customer service Hertz....avoid avoid avoid. read more

Avoid Hertz UK! We picked up at Picardy Place and dropped off at EDI after hours. They charged us for damages already noted on the pick-up form signed by me. As evidence of the damages, Hertz emailed me an unsigned pick-up form showing no damage. Fraud. What is baffling is that they are attempting to get a mere $95! Obviously, the credit card company reversed the charges, but I will never use Hertz UK again. They have put the charge through twice now and have not responded to three inquiries from me nor two from Capital One. Not even an automated response. Avoid them at all costs. And if you don't, be sure to keep a copy of the pre-existing damages form, and maybe even take photos. Hertz USA will in no way help with a Hertz UK issue. Maybe because I am a Hertz Gold Club member, but the service and my experience picking up a rental car st the los location was great. There was a medium sized line there mostly of people trying to get a rental car without a reservation - seems like poor planning anyway. But since I already had a reservation and was a gold club member, the manager,Alan, came out within a few minutes and processed my reservation. Appalling hertz rental centre. Service was terrible. When I returned the car I told them the tire pressure light went on but it didn't affect driving the car. After looking forever he spotted a small nail in the tire. As I didn't take out insurance with Hertz (My cc covers it) they Decided that I was responsible for it and they charged me for a new high performance tire. Total joke. Dreadful service. We experienced a flat tire just thirty miles after picking up the car. The car was fitted with run-flat tires but, since the tire inflater in the trunk was empty of sealant, we had to call for a tire service (which took four hours). Hertz added the tire service, which cost almost GBP250, to our charges. Who knew that we should have examined all of the emergency equipment on a new car (1000 miles) for sufficiency. The employee insisted that the nail in the tire couldn't have been present when the car was picked up because of their "thorough inspection." I rather doubt that each of the four tires is carefully rotated and inspected upon every return. Miserable and rude staff. Never again. read more
