We only used them once for a 2:30am ride from our hotel just off Princes Street to the airport. It was arranged by our hotel. We had always wanted to ride in one of these iconic cabs with the distinctive look! We were picked up on time, the driver was pleasant and helpful but thankfully, not talkative at that unholy hour, and we felt safe the whole time. There wasn't much traffic at 2:30am so we got to the airport in about 25 minutes. Our fare was £23 and we paid by credit card. Since we were leaving the UK, I emptied my wallet of all my coins and gave it to the driver. It came out to be about £5. I know they don't expect a tip but I didn't want to carry home any change and he was helping me out by accepting it. A great ride experience overall that I will readily repeat next time I'm in Edinburgh. read more

It's rare that I need to get a cab in Scotland's capital, but a year or so back when E-Bot was in Ze Reich and I regularly hopped back and forth across the Eurozone to visit her, I often had to utilise their services to get the 6am Ryanair flight. City cabs sticks in my mind though, due to the banter. I remember one particularly charming guy who spent the 20 minute journey regailing me with graphic stories of the various "18 year old stunners" whom had allegedly performed sex acts upon him in his Skoda. Given his age, appearance, personality and smell, I'm not 100% sure he was telling the truth. Thankfully, socially unpleasant / awkward situations are my forte, so in a way, this randy old bastard's delusions were preferable to a journey filled with half-hearted grumblings about the weather or traffic conditions. read more

I regularly use city cabs. Their a solid bunch who seem to be sensible and have some good focus on punctuality and driver training. They all take cards for a 2% charge I think. Generally get them early am to the airport and they're good eggs. Not so good late on a busy night but fair enough. They're busy! My office taxi account is with City Cabs so they do all my silly am trips to the airport. They are polite and efficient when taking bookings even when you give them the wrong account number. The drivers are a mixed lot, some and happy to chat, others just leave you alone and some realise that it's very early and you really would rather be in your bed. They have a good number of cars and I never have had to wait too long even on a Friday night. read more

Do not book with these people if you're disabled, just don't. Wheelchair users, asthmatics, beware. I've tried several times to book my trips to the hospital with this company and without fail they get into fights with me about wanting a non-smoking driver. Some example of the ableist and rude remarks I've received over the phone: 'Well that's nonsense I'm an asthmatic and I smoke and I'm fine.' 'I can't guarantee someone will be there on time, you may have to wait 30 minutes extra.' 'We don't know whether we have someone who doesn't smoke.' 'Why are you asking this, our people can't smoke in their cars anyway so that's never an issue.' 'Well, I can't guarantee it, and I can't guarantee that anyone will be there on time to take you to your appointment.' And so on, and so forth. Inevitably I end up having to justify why I need a non-smoking driver and in the process I've been treated extremely rudely. That their people do smoke in their cars, by the way, is beyond a shadow of a doubt as my partner and I have both seen them do so, and we've even happened to snap a picture with a smoking cabbie from their company in the background. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Central Taxis, however, is amazing and never seems to find it a problem that I'd rather not die on my way to hospital. So kind. read more

Normally in Edinburgh I get about by either walking or getting the brilliant Lothian bus service. However, on the odd occasion I have gone down that more expensive route of travelling in a taxi! I have used City Cabs a few times, booking them in advance. The main reason I thought to review City Cabs, is not due to its perfectly adequate service but due to the quality of the conversations with the taxi drivers! On every trip in a City Cabs taxi, the drivers have always been chatty and a bit more upbeat than other taxi drivers who are always a bit down (Mainly due to the issues surrounding the trams!). Now, I know taxis are more expensive than taking the bus, but for that price with City Cabs you are partly paying for the banter with the driver! This is an additionally bonus, along with a reliable service! read more

This is a taxi firm that I always use! Their number is easy to remember and the service is speedy. On the first time of phoning from a landline, you have to speak to an operator but anytime you phone from that same landline it comes to an automated menu that remembers what your address is and what your name is. You have the option there to request a taxi for straight away or to speak to an operator. When phoning from a mobile you will always speak to an operator but after the second time, your name will be on the system. The comapny are super efficient. If you request a taxi for straight away then you can gaurantee that there will be one at your door within 5 minutes. They always ring on approach as well giving you time to get out the door. Their prices are standard. Not too cheap but not expensive either. Theonly downfall for this company is that they are not very patient. When you book a taxi, they will only wait outside for you for a couple of minutes and then they will leave. read more

Daughter gets out of work at midnight carrying her uniform and kit. Uses app to get cab like a hundred times before. Cabbie does not arrive but calls and wants her to walk a couple of blocks to meet him on a particular street. She is not familiar with street names does not know where to go. She cancels and orders a new cab. First cabbie will not go to her after all. Dispatcher calls and gives her a hard time. I call ask for manager on duty. Will not put in touch. Hang up on me instead. Irate call back. Hang up on me again. Will never use them again. read more

Just got a cab from city cabs...number 893. The driver picked us up on the cowgate near the caves, we asked if we could pay by card and he said 'yes'. He then did a big loop round guthrie st, round chamber st only to end up back on the cowgate at the exact same spot before getting started on our journey down to abbeyhill. He also spent the entire journey deriding my choice of outfit as being unwise for the weather despite me wearing a thick jumper and jacket. At our destination it turned out he didn't actually know how to work the card payment system and made us feel thoroughly uncomfortable while taking all of our sensitive card information. When we queried the need for all the details he was asking us for he locked the doors with us inside and started to drive away forcing us to either pay him an extra 6 quid or hand over details we weren't too comfortable giving him. We gave him all the choices and info up front and needless to say someone with an obvious lack of respect for women out and about at night should not be driving a taxi and dealing with the public. Central Taxi's are carbon neutral...go with them. read more

Used this company after a very poor experience with a private car firm. I have to say having not used a black cab for a while the professionalism and both vehicle and driver presentation was like night and day by comparison to the private cars. Maybe it's just me but I just felt that bit safer in my own locked space in the rear. read more

As someone who uses them far more than I should I high recommend them. Drivers are polite, cabs are clean and they are reliable. I use their app and it's great - I know where the taxi is as soon as it's accepted. after a lovely trip we were subjected to a very ignorant old man from city cabs. When he stopped the car at the airport drop off, the meter clearly stated £19.60, so I put my last sterling £20 in his tray and my partner and I got our bags and exited the vehicle. As we stood putting on our coats, he got out of the car and said 'you's are a bit light on your fair', we assumed he was joking so my partner giggled nervously, he said 'what are you laughing at? its not a laughing matter', I replied that his meter said £19.40, he told me to look again....I climbed back in and it had miraculously gone up to over £21!! so clearly they charge you to exit the vehicle after its stopped ?! He was a deeply unpleasant individual who is clearly in the wrong job. He is representing the city tourists are visiting and would often be first/last point of contact in a lot of instances, and he is making a good living off them. I would avoid City Cabs next time I visit as he was plain ignorant, borderline aggressive, and how can a meter suddenly change once the car has stopped and people have left the car?!
